Creeping racist fake outrage - “Black Mob Violence” and the “Media Blackout”

The baddest of the bad craziness
Wingnuts • Views: 34,002

On the far fringes of the Wingnutosphere is a growing meme about mobs of black youth randomly attacking white people, and the “media blackout” surrounding it. It’s been going around for awhile now, but it’s gaining momentum as the George Zimmerman trial has gone to the jury, and mainstream conservatives are promoting talking about the spectre of race riots if Zimmerman is found not guilty.

The Southern Poverty Law Center published a report last year about one Colin Flaherty, who began writing about this meme for World Net Daily in an article entitled WorldNetDaily Now Peddling White Nationalism:

WorldNetDaily (WND) says it opposes racism in any form. That’s why the online publication has added a series of articles on “black mob violence” to its usual fare of antigovernment conspiracy theories, gay-bashing, anti-Muslim propaganda, and End Times prophecy.

The series, which began in mid-2012, is penned exclusively for WND by one Colin Flaherty, who according to an editor’s note posted at the top of his pieces, “has done more reporting than any other journalist on what appears to be a nationwide trend of skyrocketing black-on-white crime, violence and abuse.”

“WND,” the editor’s note says, “considers it racist not to report racial abuse solely because of the skin color of the perpetrators or victims.”

Flaherty is a marginal media figure whose main contribution to American literature is a 2011 self-published memoir titled Redwood to Deadwood: A 53-year Old Dude Hitchhikes Around America Again. He caught WND’s attention with 2012’s White Girl Bleed a Lot: The Return of Racial Violence and How the Media Ignore It, also self-published, which argues that “black-on-white” attacks have gone through the roof and the only reason you don’t know about it is because the “liberal media” has colluded to keep the story under wraps.

However, like much of everything else you’ll read in World Nut Daily, much of what Flaherty claims about a “liberal media blackout” is false, as the New York Times, among other deeply loathed “liberal media” outlets, has in fact report on outbreaks of so called “black mob violence.” But what is most insidious about all of this is that the usual hayseeds known as ‘White Nationalists” have responded to Flaherty’s dog whistles air ride sirens as you’d expect:

But unlike mainstream (and, yes, liberal) writers who have pondered the causes and consequences of mob violence among black youths, Flaherty has become popular in white nationalist circles. Several articles from his WND series have been picked up by American Renaissance, a white nationalist hate group that promotes pseudo-scientific studies and research that purport to show the inferiority of blacks to whites.

In July, Flaherty appeared as a guest on the Lowell, Mass.-based Malevolent Freedom Radio, a white nationalist show whose motto is “embrace white culture” and whose logo is the Schwartze Sonne, or black sun, a Nazi occult symbol. Telling Malevolent Freedom host Dean Anderson that he’s not part of “the [White Nationalist] movement,” Flaherty declared, “I’m just a guy that likes to write … I just have my eyes open. My attitude is, I’m going to tell you what’s happening now, and if you want to freak out about it, I really don’t care.”

The worrisome thing is that this “black mob violence” meme is now making it’s way into the mainstream conservative media. The Daily Caller’s Jim Treacher (the “Obama Ate Dog” guy), for instance, had this lovely item yesterday:
Why is Joshua Chellew less important than Trayvon Martin?

The first sentence in the story is:

WARNING: THIS POST IS RACIST

And it goes downhill from there, reporting on the beating of a 36 year old white man named Joshua Chellew by four African American gang members, followed by a smiling picture of Chellew, and four scary pictures of four very scary looking black men. Treacher then boldly says:

If Obama had four more sons…

Courtesy of Top Conservative News, which notes:

If the races had been reversed, this would be the biggest news story in the United States. It would have knocked the Zimmerman trial out of the news.

Yep. Or, if Chellew had been able to defend himself against one or all of them, he’d be the new George Zimmerman. We’d be seeing baby pictures of his attackers. Al Sharpton would be marching. Jay Carney would be filibustering away all questions about Obama’s latest race-baiting. MSNBC would be on full alert.

But Chellew wasn’t able to defend himself. He probably deserved it, right? I mean, just look at him. You can’t get any whiter than that.

Just another creepy-ass cracker.

I will gladly eat crow if I’m wrong, but I think we’re going to see more and more of this twaddle in the coming weeks, regardless of how the Zimmerman trial ends.

This is really front page material. The rest of the story is that the real genesis of this is the Council of Conservative Citizens sites, where black on white crime pieces have been an long running feature for years.

That’s true. But Flaherty seems to be the catalyst for making this “mainstream” (not that WND is mainstream by any means, but Joseph Farrah amd Jerome Corsi have been semi-regular Hannity panelists for years, so the door is already open there), and that is what’s so insidious about this.

By the way, Flaherty has a blog entitled “White Girl Bleed A lot” which I won’t link to here, but you will find links to it on the Free Republic level cesspools, as well as Breitbart/Daily Caller comment sections.

WND has become a central player on the internet racism front, as witnessed by their recent pick-up of Brimelow as a writer.

This fear mongering over mobs has been going on for some time, but now it has become its own little cottage industry.

5 RadicalModerate  Sat, Jul 13, 2013 3:08:41pm

Given the fact that WND has recently linked stories from white supremacist sites like VDARE how is this at all surprising?

Want to know why the ‘flash mobs’ of Philadelphia stopped being in the news? It was because of any media ‘blackout’, it was because Mayor Michael Nutter took effective and resolute action to stop them. However, because Mayor Nutter is black and a Democrat his actions meet their own form of blackout from Colin Flaherty and his toxic ilk.

No, that actually did get said in a nasty incident in Milwaukee. It got said by one young black man, whose words and actions were of a sociopathic nature. But to scream about an attack headed by a violent nihilist is the wrong thing to do, though it satisfies WND’s craving for hate and that’s all its intended to.

No, the real thing that needs to get done is to determine if the person in question was a sociopath by nature or if his sociopathy was acquired. If the latter then the next matter is to find out how we can prevent other young men from become deadened to the feelings of others in such a fashion. And in either case, young people of all races need to be taught to recognize and reject sociopaths and haters.

Jury has asked for clarification on manslaughter charge.

And this post is terrifying that people still think this way. But I think your conclusion is correct, but it’s been nothing but blatant racism ever since Obama was elected.

The racists just can’t handle it.

If that is their decision, then Zimmerman is going to get 20 years, if my understanding of the law is correct (the fact that he used a gun is an aggravating factor if he is convicted).

35 kerFuFFler  Sat, Jul 13, 2013 4:48:27pm

A black woman in Florida was convicted and given a twenty year sentence this year for firing a warning shot to deter her abusive husband while ‘standing her ground’. Though she had an order of protection against him and he had entered her home aggressively, the jury did not see her choice to discharge a weapon as reasonable self defense. She did not even aim at him——-she merely proved that her gun was loaded and that she was willing to shoot———but her crime has been seen as more grievous than Zimmerman’s (so far…..). Meanwhile, in Tennessee, a (white) woman shot her abusive husband and the police considered it an open and shut case of self defense.

Violent crime by any person, whatever their race, is deplorable. But the inequities in our justice system are a bigger problem for our society. Outcomes like the one in this case stoke a sense of racial grievance and promote further hatred and violence.

re: #35 kerFuFFler

I read about that case and I need to correct your recounting of it: It was not that the jury did not see the woman’s case as self-defense, the judge presiding over the trial did not allow the woman to claim self defense. He ruled that when she went back into the house she voluntarily reentered the zone of danger, which negated any claim of self-defense. Thus the jury literally could not return a verdict of self defense, and given the evidence that left them with no choice but to vote for conviction.

Two words - Jury Nullification.

The only juror to speak about the verdict clearly considered that course inappropriate, that person’s reply largely being “We were given valid, legal orders and though we did not like them we obeyed them.” And there is a case to be made for that view, that case being that deciding what the law meant was the job of the judge and the proper avenue for undoing a bad decision on the judge’s part is an appeal.

I am not saying I agree either with that reasoning or that of the judge; I am simply stating their reasoning and saying how that reasoning can be defended.

I would not be too sure of that. It’s worth noting she was not convicted of aggravated assault against her husband; She was convicted because she fired a warning shot into a wall and her children were on the other side of that wall. That case really was not about race, it was about specifics in self-defense law and about the fact that firing warning shots is a bad idea.

God Damn it, DS, I DIDN’T SAY THAT! Self defense law doesn’t support firing warning shots in any state, if for no other reason than a bullet fired into the air has to come down somewhere and one fired into the ground can ricochet. As a result, warning shots are extremely problematic legally and should not be used by armed citizens.

OT This is really odd. I had two very young fellows who wanted to check my alarm system. I answered the door from the front bedroom window and they still wanted me to come down to open the door and let them in. I told them they could not come in and one of them just said oh you do not have an alarm and walked off.

Judge has asked jurors for more specific question on manslaughter charge.

They’re at dinner now.

Of course…showing that you don’t WANT to kill someone is worse than just shooting them at point blank range the first time and then not even checking to see if they’re still breathing.

Her kids were home, which is part of the reason she got charged. It’s an imperfect example.

I read about Chellew’s death in the Atlanta Journal Constitution yesterday. According to the article, all four of the men involved threw up gang signs. IIRC, the three black guys threw up Bloods gang signs, and Chellew threw up Crips gang signs. The Bloods were reported to have been wearing red, Chellew blue. The Fulton County District Attorney has decided to file murder charges against the three guys whose actions led to Chellew’s death. They didn’t kill him themselves, but after the beating, Chellew ran out into the street and was hit by a car, which is really what caused his death. The driver wasn’t charged in the incident. The Fulton County DA says the case will not be prosecuted as a hate crime. We can always leave it to those with fertile imaginations and race hatred on the brain to stir up the mouth-breathers and get them to believe something which isn’t true. There was no stalking in the Chellew case. The four guys ended up at the same place at the same time by accident. There was no death-by-gun in the Chellew case. Both of these facts say to anyone capable of thinking critically that the Chellew and Trayvon Martin cases are different.

Ohio tea party member flies Confederate flag during racist rant at school board meeting

Springboro, Ohio residents are up in arms after a member of the local tea party unfurled a Confederate flag at a meeting of the town’s school board Thursday. According to Huffington Post, Sonny Thomas, who bills himself as the president and founder of the Springboro Tea Party was protesting the removal of a set of religiously-themed and ideologically slanted classes from the district’s summer curriculum.

Thomas, who has a history of racist and inflammatory statements, reportedly gave an impassioned defense of the classes, which were intended for parents and children. The summer courses were sponsored by the Institute of the Constitution, an offshoot group from right-wing think tank The American View and the National Center for Constitutional Studies, a religious-themed nationalist group funded by the Church of Latter Day Saints.

In his speech, Thomas made racist remarks, invoked neo-Confederate group The League of the South and displayed the Confederate flag, saying that African-Americans in the U.S. “should consider themselves lucky since they are treated better in the United States than they would be if they were in ‘Black Countries’ with ‘genocide,’” according to Springboro resident Nimisha Patel.

Let me make myself very clear here. You DO NOT pull a weapon unless you plan on using it. If you pull it, you intend to use it, for deadly force. Nothing more nothing less,

Warning shots are bullsshit and will get you right up shit creek.

End of Program. End of Line

Years ago, I had a firearms safety course run by a local police department. They had a training video where they showed why you never fire warning shots. They showed a cop chasing an armed suspect and firing 2 shots into the air as a warning. They then cut to a little old lady dropping mail into a mailbox when her letter got hit out of her hands. For the second round, they had a kid in his drive way fixing his bike get hit in front of his mom.

You do not fire warning shots, ever.

I very much doubt the people making the comparison are doing so in good faith. I have yet to encounter a situation in which a statement prefaced “the liberal media won’t tell you about X” that didn’t immediately twist the source material referenced. If you’re never doing due diligence…liking reading what you cite…at some point it’s not just laziness.

It would be surprising that a white man was part of the local branch of the Crips, but stranger things have happened in gang lore. Chellew’s clothes bolster the case for Chellew being in the gang slightly, since blue is the Crips color. Either Chellew was a gang-banger himself, or he deserves a Darwin Award for flashing gang signs like that.

re: #74 PhillyPretzel

You were smart not to answer the door, but you probably should not have even answered them from the BR window, either. I’m not trying to scare you, but they may have been casing the neighborhood. If you know anyone who has an alarm system, you can ask them for a sticker they might have gotten from the co showing there is an alarm system. You can put it on either the door window or just a front window. Just make sure you have dead bolts and your windows are secure, front and back.

I usually don’t answer my door if I’m not sure of who it is. They can’t see in and my back door opens on a balcony.

I want everyone to notice the bolded part. In addition, them funding a nationalist group is like members of “League of the South” calling themselves patriots. A mind-blowingly ignorant and hypocritical statement.

In LA it might be weird to see a white Blood or Crip. In the South, where the gangs are like syndicate franchises, it’s not that shocking.

I would not be too sure of that. It’s worth noting she was not convicted of aggravated assault against her husband; She was convicted because she fired a warning shot into a wall and her children were on the other side of that wall.

Don’t really see how that’s aggravated assault though, reckless endangerment seems like a more apt description since the intent was specifically not to cause harm. What she did was a serious misdemeanor at worst.

I agree with you, Frank, but the way the laws are written in Florida resulted in the charge being aggravated assault. Both that and the 20 year mandatory sentence were the state legislature’s doing and they’d have to undo it.

Here’s the shitty thing: if anybody African American reacts badly to the results of this case, lots of folks will blame it on the community as a whole: the neighborhood, the region, the whole African-American ethnic group. And that in and of itself is bullshit.

It’s one of the subtle processes that propagates prejudice: how much group-blame is normalized. I mean, that’s a giant chunk of what Drudge does—drive home that there must be something wrong with black people, because of the action of specific black people.

Good, just trying to help. My son worked installing alarms for a number of years with a couple of companies, but they never solicited door to door. Most companies don’t do that; there’s enough fear to spread around already, and even alarm systems can be useless against pros. He told me the best defense is to leave lights on when you’re gone (even leave one on at night), and to keep a dog inside, even a small one. Thieves don’t like lights, and they don’t like barking dogs.

Understood. Still, the proper response to gang violence is decisive police action. this murder should be taken as a catalyst for data-driven policing and competent investigation into the local gang chapters. As the NYPD has shown, gang violence can be greatly curbed if it is tackled with intelligence and vigor.

Some sad news out of Austin today. The women’s advocate who had a stroke during the filibuster has died:

Austin Loses Another Strong Woman

Anne McAfee died this morning at her home, where she chose to spend her final hours with her husband Bill, her five children, and her many grandchildren of all ages.

McAfee, 82, died as a result of complications from a stroke she suffered at the Capitol June 25, where she had joined thousands of others in solidarity against one of the most restrictive abortion bills in the country. The bill ultimately passed late Friday night.

Word spread quickly of McAfee’s passing. In a statement, Congressman Lloyd Doggett said his friend of 40 years “was full of compassion, courage, and commitment, never giving up on building a more progressive Texas. If she could have chosen a moment to leave this world, it would have been as she was raising her voice for women’s rights and social justice,” he said.

“Her values are reflected in her wonderful family - a sixty-plus-year marriage with active children and grandchildren, one of whom is a member of my Congressional team. In our sadness, there is so much to celebrate about her life and enduring values.”

Of course. There seems to be a willful lack of understanding about the differences in being arrested and walking away after killing someone.
