Rush Limbaugh Gives Himself Permission to Use the N Word

At last he’s free

LIMBAUGH: Stick with me. Keep your eyes on the radio. CNN informs us via Rachel Jeantel that Trayvon called Rachel and said that he was being followed by a “creepy ass cracka,” which we have now learned, that is a person acting like they are a police, like a security guard. So then, Piers Morgan, the ever-penetrating inquisitor, said, “So was there anything you wished you’d said when you were in there?” meaning as a witness on the stand.

[BEGIN AUDIO CLIP]

JEANTEL: Nigga.

MORGAN: Why?

JEANTEL: People, the whole world say it’s a racist word. Mind you, around 2000, they changed it around, I think. It starts spelling “n-i-g-g-a.”

MORGAN: What does that mean to you, that way of spelling it? What does that word mean to you?

JEANTEL: That means a male.

MORGAN: A black male?

JEANTEL: No, any kind of male.

MORGAN: Black or white?

JEANTEL: Any kind. Chinese you can say “nigga.” That’s my Chino, “nigga.” They can say that.

[END AUDIO CLIP]

LIMBAUGH: This was between 9 and 10 pm last night on CNN, who is in a quest to become the, again, most respected news organization in the country, perhaps even in the world. So, “nigga,” with an “a” on the end, well I think I can now. Isn’t that the point? ‘Cause it’s not racist. That’s the point. I could be talking about a male, a Chinese male, a guy at the Laundromat. I could be talking about a man. That’s what she said it means.

If we’re going to be realist about this:

Rush Limbaugh Gives Himself Permission to Use the N Word…publically. But probably not when sex touring the Dominican Republic.

3 Sol Berdinowitz  Tue, Jul 16, 2013 1:30:37pm

It is not the word, it is the context it appears in. I get just as annoyed at PC freaks blowing a gasket over every single use of it as I do about chuckleheads like Rush gloating over how they are “allowed” to use it…

4 Lidane  Tue, Jul 16, 2013 1:30:38pm

Dear Rush,

Please proceed. Also, please feel free to encourage other conservatives and Republicans to follow your lead.

Well good then Rush, you just gave yourself permission to say it on air. Like you don’t use that word any other time, ever.

Please proceed you divisive, racist, sexist, nasty, evil, dogwhistling, making money off of death and hate, asshole. Do keep going.

erik’s Third Rule of the Internet: when you expand a dead person’s name and title to the fullest extent permitted by the language in order to lend their presumed intellectual heft to your viewpoint, your argument is a shambling pile of cow dung.

17 calochortus  Tue, Jul 16, 2013 1:37:11pm

I’m not a big fan of calling it “the N word” and other such tiptoeing around. I think it invests it with a magical power that it shouldn’t have. And everyone knows what is intended and fills in the original word.
But, you know what? It’s really not my call to make. I’m white and live in an area where as far as I know it was never really part of the vocabulary-at least not in my lifetime.

Rush is just trying to get the attention of the mean spirited and the childish.

21 GeneJockey  Tue, Jul 16, 2013 1:40:03pm

My younger son told us that his peeps (all white suburban late-teenagers) have started using ‘Nigga’ the way Ms. Jeantel describes. I made sure that he realized that this is probably a REALLY BAD habit to get into.

People who have no idea of ideas get hung up on symbols and external signs.

Just like people who have no idea of what true patriotism is about will get hung up on flags and lapel pins, men who have no idea of what it means to be a man will get hung up on macho symbols, big cars and phallic guns, people who have no sensitivity to race and racial issues will get hung up on certain words that have a history of being a racial slur.

My Twitters says that Liz Cheney will challenge fellow Repub Mike Enzi for the U.S. Senate in Wyoming.

Good article about that from a week and a half ago:

But Ms. Cheney’s move threatens to start a civil war within the state’s Republican establishment, despite the reverence many hold for her family.

Mr. Enzi, 69, says he is not ready to retire, and many Republicans say he has done nothing to deserve being turned out.

It would bring about “the destruction of the Republican Party of Wyoming if she decides to run and he runs, too,” Alan K. Simpson, a former Republican senator from the state, said in an interview last week. “It’s a disaster — a divisive, ugly situation — and all it does is open the door for the Democrats for 20 years.”

I have always loved Ta-Nehisi Coates’ explanation:

“A month ago I was giving a talk at a college where someone asked me why it was wrong for white people to use the word “n*****” in a friendly way. I responded, as I always do, by pointing out that the names people use depend on their relations. That I should not expect to call another man’s wife “honey” by pointing out that he calls her the same thing.”

re: #58 wrenchwench

Close. Not Well, but Hole. Jackson Hole.

True story: about a million years ago, in 1981, a buddy and I traveled cross-country. The eventual goal was his sister’s house in Eugene, Oregon, but we had no schedule to follow; “go west, young men” was basically our entire blueprint.

After a couple months on the road, money started getting tight, but we weren’t ready to head straight for Oregon.

We wound up in Gillette, Wyoming, which at the time (and as I understand it, still is) was a boomtown because of energy exploration. We thought that maybe because of the transient nature of the town, we might be able to find a week or two worth of work, after which we’d fill the gas tank and continue west.

We went to the Wyoming Department of Labor (or whatever it may have been called) to find out what the chances of that were.

The lady at the DOL took one look at us and said “You know, boys, Wyoming is a place where men are men and sheep are sheared,” and that, in order to find work, we would have to go to the local watering holes around the time of day that the day shift ended.

So we went to the pub that looked like it did a brisk business with the energy guys, waiting for the supervisors coming off the day shift.

Honest to Jupiter, I never saw so many mean and nasty looking people in my life. One of the supervisors told us that, indeed, they were looking for “worms” for their oil crews, basically the guys that did ALL the dirty work.

He told us to show up there the next day, but then charmed us with a story — and, to this day, I’m convinced it’s how they got rid of people they didn’t think would be a good fit on the crews — of how “worms” who didn’t watch out what they were doing could find themselves missing an arm because the cables at the drilling sites were tightly wound and if you didn’t carefully watch what you were doing, you could find yourself with your arm completely shorn off.

I’m sure the boys on the work crew got a good the next chuckle the next morning when their brand new worms were nowhere to be found.

In 1981, Portland really was a sort of trippy, cool place. Stayed that way through much of the 1990s as well. Last time I was there, in 2008…..it’s not as trippy or cool anymore. Now it’s ‘trendy’, having been infested by hipsters. The Pearl District, where I lived in the mid-90s, just isn’t what it used to be. It’s been gentrified.

in the 1970s portland was such a cheap place to live that i used to sublet rooms in houses with other hippies for $75-125/mo. i was going to college there. i worked as a dishwasher for $2.50/ hr and saved money. (of course, as a dishwasher you could surreptitiously bring food home - we would make steak stew.) you could tell where the hippie neighborhoods were because of the god’s-eyes in the windows

sometimes i’d go down to burnside at dawn and sign up for the ‘casual labor’ - it was still ‘burnside bums’ then - it wasn’t nearly fashionable yet. powell’s book store looked like a book warehouse with tall knocked-together wooden shelves. in the SE there were antique store that always seemed to have an oversupply of giant, elaborately decorated cast iron franklin stoves. there was a diner near the river that opened at 3am for the delivery truck drivers, and another diner called the ‘brooklyn diner’ that stayed open all night…

Even in the mid-90s, some places around downtown were still pretty cheap, all things considered. I lived on Stark, pretty much right across the street from the Fish Grotto restaurant. It wasn’t bad at all; Fish Grotto could get a bit noisy on the weekends, but it was tolerable.

I’m supposed to feel sorry for the GOP in Wyoming because Liz Cheney wants to seek the seat currently held by Mike Enzi? GOP on GOP? Go for it.

Primary away. And let the best candidate win.

Far too many politicians have safe seats and run essentially uncontested in either the primary or general election (and more than a few run essentially unopposed in both).

That has to change. Safe seats, a product of gerrymandering, makes an already difficult political situation even worse. It breeds extremism - and this is coming home to roost for the GOP, where someone like GWB or Dick Cheney from a few years ago (who were definitely right wing), are now considered RINOs by mainstream GOPers in the House.

I have never been much of a barefoot person. When it was warm enough for bare feet, there was hot asphalt to cross, and then Dad dug a hole for concrete patio, filled it with sharp, pointy gravel, then never bothered getting concrete poured over it.

Though if it’s a shop floor or something like that it’s back to wearing shoes. Boots if/when my ankle gets to that point.

I love going barefoot, but generally limit it to indoors now that I’m an adult.
I did once break my little toe, but I was wearing shoes at the time. Didn’t even hit it hard, just apparently at the wrong angle. That led to about 3 weeks where I couldn’t put on anything but flip flops.

Christie Helps Announce $4.5 Million Donation to Hurricane Relief Fund from United Arab Emirates

Gov. Chris Christie was in Highlands this morning taking questions and explaining to a bunch of summer campers what an ambassador is prior to a ceremony at which the United Arab Emirates announced it is donating $4.5 million to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund. […]

The donation will be used to upgrade computer infrastructure at 30 schools in nine Sandy-affected districts. […]

The United Arab Emirates provided disaster relief after Hurricane Katrina and other calamities. […]

“There can be an impact to this,” said political analyst Patrick Murray.

Murray says the governor could take some heat from the far right for accepting money from a Muslim state.

“They gave some aid out to Joplin, Missouri after the tornado there and there was a whole bunch of calls that this was Islamic blood money, and that all came from a certain segment,” Murray said. “If he runs for president in 2016 he’s going to hear it. The issue is, is Islam, Muslim, terrorism, that kind of issue going to be as relevant in 2016?” […]

MP3 killed the video star. But yeah, I think it’s fair. A lot of the new music out today really doesn’t lend itself to needing a strong musical video since a lot of new music today is more old school in that it’s about lyrics and songwriting rather than effect.

Found out there are two dogs on the same floor as my apartment - pair of what are probably small Yorkshire terriers. (Yappy dogs in any case.) They were out in the hall with their owner when I took the recycling to the trash room.

Both started barking at me and came over to sniff at me and act brave. So I stood there and let them look me over while I talked to the owner. One kept circling and barking while the other quieted down pretty quickly.

And then, of course, when I went back to the apartment, the cats bolted out to see what all the fuss was about. I stayed out of sight in order to not set the dogs off. The one cat stayed back near me, bu the other went to the corner to look down the hall. He then sat there and apparently just watched the dogs.

I think they eventually noticed him as well and came over to sniff at him. No barking, and he tensed but didn’t run. I think he sniffed noses with one of the dogs (couldn’t tell for certain since I was remaining out of it unless it got noisy or the cat got ready to violently retaliate.)

Soon after the dogs went into their apartment and I fetched the cat to bring him in for dinner. That does explain that both cats “patrol” to the far end of the floor when they are out - can probably smell the dogs.

I’ve even been known to wear socks w/sandals in cool weather. So not a fashionista. And BTW, I dress fairly casual all the time now, so my “coat” in the mild winters we have is always a hoodie—always. A lot of the time, if you just see me from the back, you can’t tell anything about me until I turn around. I could even be a kid.

Around my brother’s place it was barefoot indoors and wellingtons or flip-flops outside. His chickens were free-range for years.

my chickens are free range.
There is no safe place outdoors…
and then there was the time the youngest granddaughter left the front door open and invited a rooster indoors. I have pictures somewhere…

I’m only 5’ tall and never wore heels over 2” (3” when the 2” started going out of style in the 80s). Now that I’m much older, it’s bare feet in the house and sandals anywhere else. Can’t stand to have my feet enclosed in shoes anymore and only wear athletic shoes in the winter.

I can’t wear heels—I’m too much of a spaz. I’m either barefoot or wearing slip-on flats or mules/clogs. I have some awesome Canadian boots I bought on sale a few years back that I wear when it snows, but that about covers it. I think I have a total of like 4-5 pairs of shoes max.

Yup - the bears aren’t fishing. They’re catching.

“This is it! What my whole life has been building up to! I gonna swim up this river and spawn, making sure my genes go into the next generation of salmon!

“I’m getting close now, just this little whitewater to clear. Okay, one big leap!

“Hey! Ouch! What the hell’s this thing! A Bear? Why is he biting me?

“Aw, shit…….”

Boots. Wish I could wear them, but my legs are too short. : ) Had a pair of Frye boots, round toes, plain tan, and low heels once but after that, didn’t wear boots anymore.

Don’t know if you watch Jeopardy, but the final Jeapordy answer was about a British TV show celebrating it’s 50th anniversary most notable for having 11 actors play the lead role.

I might suggest that he tries it out — an expirament if you will…
Right in the middle of Compton, for example.
