Spectacular New Time-Lapse Short: Mirror City

Kaleidoscopic hyper-reality

When I first started Mirror City, I wanted to create a video that was completely out of the norm. I wanted to showcase something unique and artistic, which takes Timelapse photography into a more abstract direction. Mirror City is a visual story through some of the great American cities: Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. These clips were all processed from their original form, into the kaleidoscopic visuals that you see in this video. Many people visit these large cities every day, and all of these places have been shot and filmed, but I wanted to emulate these urban landscapes in a way that nobody has even seen before. I wanted to put man-made geometric shapes, mixed with elements of color and movement to create less of a structured video, and more of a plethora of visual stimulation.

The video starts off with simple mirrors and recognizable architecture, as the video progresses, so does the visual stimulation, showing the real abstraction of the piece.
I have worked on this piece for an extremely long amount of time. I have spent time mirroring images and videos for the past five years, and I have been working on this specific piece for about four months. I felt it was time to combine Timelapse photography and the simplicity of a kaleidoscope, and create Mirror City.

Up at Beserkeley we were paying four bucks a hit for Owsley. When he went out of business the price for good shit went up to five bucks and slowly escalated from there. I was a retailer when windowpane came out so I was buying it by the sheet. In those quantities it was around twenty five cents a hit.

In the late 70’s/early 80’s, microdot or blotter was $3.

My roommate (the art major) was the household designee in charge of very carefully measuring, marking and slicing (exacto-blade) the blotter sheets into perfect doses. The wholesaler told us it was a 10x10 sheet, but we made it 10x11 for an extra vig (who’s gonna notice that itty bitty bit of a shave?)

In the mid-70’s, we were paying around three dollars for a 250-mic hit of blotter. Good clean stuff out of the U’s organic chem lab. Often dropped on a Friday afternoon and then played intramural softball, which was a hoot.

Finally got around to watching the President’s remarks he made today. Very sober. I happen to think he’s telling the truth about the black experience in the US.

Is he stoking a race war? By assuming that, these RWNJs are letting their racist freak flags fly high today. Just disgusting stuff. And thanks to a few select LGF comments, I have seen the most vile racist Twitter accounts imaginable (not dogging LGF comments, it’s good to air the dirty laundry, still though, I need brain bleach).

What kills me is the fact that RWNJs - up to and after the verdict was read - were accusing the “left” of wishing for race wars, when in fact it was the RWNJs that wanted riots so bad. It’s a stunning (and sadly, predictable) instance of cognitive dissonance.

Everything the President said today, every Black person in America already knew. Everybody who has a Black friend (an actual friend, not an “I’m not a racist I have a black friend” acquaintance) already knew.

The only people who weren’t already fully aware of these facts… are white people who don’t know any black people well enough to speak to about anything other than work. Not only weren’t they aware, they’re heavily invested in it not being true. So they tell themselves and each other that the President is making it up to get people riled up.

He keeps tying to get in close with Devilfish and drop off troops to fire off volleys within rapid fire range.

Effective against IG and other light armor troops.

Not so much against Wolves.

Concur. Heavy assault troops like that have to be met with other heavy forces. You have to smash units like that and that takes firepower.

That last post having been said, that kind of tactic with the Tau would work well to rapidly seize an area and hold it against enemy advance guards. But trying it against Space Wolves makes me think you buddy’s Tau force are about to emulate the British 1st Airbourne at Arnhem.

He needs to sit back and make me come to him, then use his transports to seize objectives later in the game after my assault is broken by his long range and anti-armor fire.

Alas, he takes little of either, expecting close range fusion guns to deal with heavy targets. The problem is I have enough foresight to make those a priority target.

The Time Obama Was Mistaken for a Waiter at a Tina Brown Book Party

“What I will always remember,” Rosman wrote in 2008, “is as I was leaving that party … I was approached by another guest, an established author. He asked about the man I had been talking to. Sheepishly he told me he didn’t know that Obama was a guest at the party, and had asked him to fetch him a drink. In less than six years, Obama has gone from being mistaken for a waiter among the New York media elite, to the president-elect. What a country.”

It’s noteworthy, BTW that he only does this in California. He never gets violent in New York City, where beating someone up will get you serious jail time, no matter how famous you are.

Kanye West alleged rant leaked after 2009 Taylor Swift VMA confrontation

The apparent reason West so abruptly stole the microphone from Swift, claiming Beyonce deserved the award for “Best Female Video” over her, was because of the hard work he had just done while rewriting his verse on track “Run This Town.”

“Because I did that, Taylor Swift cannot win over Beyoncé! Because I wrote my verse in two days, Taylor Swift cannot beat Beyoncé,” he can be heard firmly saying.

“As long as I’m alive! And if I’m alive, kill me then! Kill me then! As long as I’m alive, you gon’ have to deal with it. ‘Cause there ain’t gonna be no more motherf—-ing Elvises with no James Browns.”

“Two VMA nominations!! If you vote and get us one, I promise to keep a firmer grip on the mic this time,” she wrote.

An unidentified female voice chimed in during the leaked rant, asking West why he was so angry.

“Because my mother got arrested for the f—kin’ sit-ins,” he said.

“My mother died for this fame s—t! I moved to f—kin’ Hollywood chasing this shit. My mother died because of this s—t. F—k MTV.”

West also goes on to bash Pink for performing twice that night.

“What the f—k was Pink performing? Don’t nobody know that song. Pink performed twice! Two songs? How the f—k Pink perform two songs and I didn’t even get asked to perform ‘Heartless,’ he said of his own hit at the time.

“Heartless” is the biggest song of the year! It had the most spins of the first quarter! I don’t know that Pink song! But I noticed that she’s pink!”

The guy is a no class asshole who is setting himself up for a fall.

The extent to which that matters is limited, though. Allowing someone to get away with physically attacking others simply because he is an excellent singer is a “broken window”. It is not just bad in and of itself, it also encourages other people to engage in lawless and violent behavior.

San Diego county clerk: Let me ‘enforce state law’ by denying marriage licenses to same sex couples

Ernest “Ernie” Dronenburg, the county clerk in San Diego, California, and his lawyers filed an emergency petition before the California courts this afternoon asking for a temporary stay to state Attorney General Kamala Harris’ (D) recent order to start accepting marriage licenses applications. Her order followed the June U.S. Supreme Court ruling in favor of same sex marriage and the Monday state Supreme Court ruling refusing to issue a stay to other petitioners.

Dronenburg seeks an immediate stay in order to refrain from issuing marriage licenses while his case is considered, after which he claims to expect that he will not be forced by the state to issue such licenses. In his brief (available at BuzzFeed), Dronenburg argues that the federal courts have no jurisdiction over marriage in the state, that the state officials who ordered county clerks to issue marriage licenses in keeping with the courts’ rulings have no authority to tell him what to do, and that he is the one attempting to uphold the actual state law which supposedly defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

Dronenburg additionally claims that, without an injunction to allow him to deny marriage licenses to couples seeking to marry in the county, he is “suffering, and will continue to suffer, irreparable injury and damage.”

No. Now get out.

Dronenburg, who was first elected to office in 2010, is represented in his legal proceedings by the Freedom of Defense Conscience Fund, which also filed briefs at the U.S. Supreme Court in support of keeping same sex marriage illegal in California. They are also currently representing a New Jersey non-profit, JONAH, which is being sued by the Southern Poverty Law Center for fraud because it offers so-called “gay conversion therapy” promising to “cure” clients. The FDCF is additionally involved in cases related to the birth control mandate of the Affordable Care Act and once sued the city of San Diego for sexual harassment after four Christian firefighters were asked to participate in an LGBT pride parade.

Yes you would, but you have to catch the codes.
He was appointed by the Speaker of the US House of Representatives as a commissioner on the IRS Restructuring Commission in 1997. That means Newt Gingrich assigned him as one of the hatchet men meant to neuter the IRS. He actively supports the California Taxpayer Bill of Rights. TABORs are, well, they consistently wind up with massive cuts in taxes with the majority of cuts benefiting the wealthy — at best. He started his own Taxpayers Advocacy firm when forced to retire (due to age) from Deloitte.

That’s three clues that he’s very Tea Party/anti-tax.

True. I think Ta-Nehisi Coates did a good job writing about the President’s remarks and how significant they were for black people.

Checking over at National Racists Online we see plenty of articles (at the top) gloating over Detroit’s bankruptcy, flavored with a few articles about Al Sharpton, all set in a sea of Zimmerman-story outrage at Obama pieces.

Oh, but the one piece of news actually affecting NR somehow mysteriously is absent:

DC Court affirms Michael Mann’s right to proceed in defamation lawsuit against National Review and CEI

Two decisions handed down July 19 in DC Superior Court affirmed climate scientist Michael Mann’s right to proceed in his defamation lawsuit against the Competitive Enterprise Institute and the National Review Online for their statements accusing him of data manipulation and fraud. The Court is not buying the Defendants arguments in their Motion to Dismiss that their statements are protected speech under the First Amendment, mere “opinion,” “rhetorical hyperbole,” or “fair comment.”

Oh, and not just gloating about Detroit, but clearly misreading the filing and the judge blocking the filing because it violates the Michigan constitution. NR, Podhoretz and others think that the judge was somehow honoring or obeying the President. Idiots - she was following the law - the constitution of the state where the filing entity was located. If she ignored the state constitution, that’d be a bigger problem, especially considering how much these so-called law and order types are into the plain language of the constitution.

Nothing could be plainer than the actual language that prohibits reducing the accrued pension benefits in the Michigan constitution.

Sadly, some people don’t control themselves, but rather are held in check by someone else. when that other person dies or weakens greatly, the Inner Demon comes out to ‘play’.

Well, I have a new to me computer now. It’s an Acer C7 Chromebook. It’s designed to run Chrome OS and store everything in the cloud. It’s ok at that if you have a constant fast connection and it’s cheap ($199 new - $100 for me used). But the key is it takes up to 8 gb RAM & has a 320 gb hard disk rather than the usual Chromebook 16 gb SSD. A bit of puttering around and it’s a linux laptop (Xubuntu 13.04) with all my data files & music transfered to it :)

Even though it’s a slow dual core Celeron, it’s still MUCH faster than a 11 year old 1.8 ghz P4M with 2 gb. More ram, more disk & more CPU in a small package? Big win.

I like Chrome as a browser but I do more than live in a browser. Having a proper OS & the ability to do what I want to makes it better than the original Chromebook concept or, worse for me, a tablet.

re: #117 Justanotherhuman

It boils down to stereotypes and assumptions rather than factual information. Ignorance. This is the harm, the danger even, of “othering”, it dehumanizes people and makes it much easier to disregard a single person’s humanity. We see it in human trafficking(seriously, how could you force someone into prostitution or slavery if you saw them as human?), the genocide in Rwanda was cheered on by radio broadcasts calling the “other” cockroaches to be exterminated, the Nazi led genocide- same thing, Jews, Roma, Homosexuals, all “othered” so they became nothing more than a nuisance that had to GO. It happened to the American Indians, they were savages that either had to be saved from their inferior culture, or pests that stood in the way of progress.

I don’t think we can seriously call ourselves advanced or even civilized on any level until we make this part of our culture unacceptable. It’s going to be a long and uphill battle to get there.

Since it’s a little slow around here today, I’m going to ask a kinda dumb question. Bear with me(and not with real bears,ha)…

I’ve never been to college, one day I will probably go. Since I’ve never been, I don’t know the first thing about the admissions process or any of that stuff. But I want to look into a trade school or vocational type school for my son who is 19 and has Asperger’s. Here’s the thing, there are SO many rip off and dubious two year or technical or trade schools out there, I have NO IDEA how to figure out what is legit and what isn’t. Is there a way to figure that out, or would I need to find a school and then call a university to see if credits from that school would ever be transferable? Is there some sort of accreditation legit schools have that I could look for?

I have an ex husband who spent close to 50K back in the day(I checked, it’s nearly double that now)for a degree from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in professional photography. To my knowledge, that “degree” never got him any job anywhere. I’ve looked at sound engineering/audio tech schools for my kidI(he’s a total metalhead, but not a great musician, though he has taught himself to play a little guitar and some drums), and the cost is just astounding, almost as much as medical school. Yet year after year these schools are crammed with young people. I do not want my son to get sucked into a program that is worthless when he’s done. Any ideas or thoughts?

The Daily Caller Sends Uneducated Intern To White House, Defends How He Made Them Look Like Idiots

In response to criticism regarding their sending an intern to cover the White House press room, Tucker Carlson and Neil Patel of The Daily Caller issued a statement (with musical accompaniment not included here):

Some reporters in Washington are asking why The Daily Caller sent our intern Gabe Finger to the White House press briefing this afternoon. Talk about missing the point. The real question is, why did it take a 16-year-old intern to raise an obvious and important question that the White House press corps should have asked days ago? We don’t care how old Gabe Finger is. It doesn’t matter to us what his credentials are. All we care about is how well he does his job. Today he did it a lot better than most White House reporters.

This highlights the usual problem from anything coming out of The Daily Caller, their complete and total detachment from reality. They, along with their intern, completely and absolutely fail in comprehending civics. To them, the problem was not that they had an intern asking the White House if the federal government was going to send the 101st airborne to protect the Zimmerman family, but that no other journalist had.

You can’t go wrong with a State-owned junior college. Tuition isn’t as cheap as it used to be (budget cuts!!), you’ll pay almost as much as you would at a private school, but the for-profits mostly suck and the state schools do for-real transferrable credits.

Also… if there’s a union for whatever trade he wants to train for, call their office and ask them. They might even have an apprentice/journeyman program affiliated with a JC whose curriculum they have input to.

re: #167 William Barnett-Lewis

We’re in GA, I think Chattahoochee Tech is probably one of the closest schools to us. We’re kind of on hold, he’s on a waiting list to get into a state program for young adults with autism that will help pay for his schooling, and if we do too much outside of their parameters, they’ll take him out of the queue and close his case file(which I fought to have opened in the first place, long, long story). He needs to pick a school and field of study at some point, sooner rather than later. I’ll make some calls this week to the various trade unions around here, there has to be someone who we could at least go talk to about various career options.

My main concern is just staying the hell away from ripoff schools in the first place. How some of this stuff is even legal I have no idea.

His math skills are horrendous. He did ok before the schools here did this “integrated math” insanity(which they ditched this year) but he really struggles with anything beyond the basics.

If he ever needs to brush up his math skills for a job or just personal learning, I recommend taking a look at Khan Academy. It’s a set of video tutorials and practice exercises, doesn’t offer any kind of certificates that I’m aware of, but it’s helped me improve my math understanding dramatically. It gives a lot of little achievement badges for completing certain tasks, which I think would appeal to someone on the autism spectrum.

Like She Who Must Be Obeyed says: “Those who can, play. Those who can’t, run sound boards.”

I run sound boards as a sideline. Your child sounds like an excellent candidate. Whether in the studio or at live shows, a good sound (wo)man can make a decent living in this world.

I hired a college kid to help him while he was in high school. An honors math student even. She was completely baffled by what the hell they did to the math curriculum. We muddled through enough to get him through the state required math graduation test, what a nightmare. I could go that route again if we can’t find another option, just not sure what we’d use as a curriculum and starting off place.

Nothing is ever simple with this kid, I swear, lol.

TP is definitely going for link bait there and leaving out a fair amount of info about the BSA’s height/weight criteria for all Scouts and Scouters, such as why it was instituted to begin with. The health/weight criteria that National uses (which is based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans table from the USDA and HHS) is one of the primary means to determine a Scout or Scouter’s eligibility to participate in high-adventure activities (backcountry hiking, backpacking, rappelling, etc.) more than 30 minutes away from where an ambulance can reach them by road, but BMI can optionally be used to grant exceptions to this:

If you exceed the maximum weight for height as explained on the next
page and your planned high-adventure activity will take you more than
30 minutes away from an emergency vehicle/accessible roadway, you
will not be allowed to participate. At the discretion of the medical
advisers of the event and/or camp, participation of an individual
exceeding the maximum weight for height may be allowed if the body
fat percentage measured by the health care provider is determined
to be 20 percent or less for a female or 15 percent or less for a male.
(Philmont requires a hydrostatic weighing or DXA test to be used for
this determination.) Please call the event leader and/or camp if you
have any questions. Enforcing the height/weight guidelines is strongly
encouraged for all other events.

This policy is nothing new; National’s high-adventure bases (Philmont Scout Ranch [which I have been to four times in the past twenty years], Florida Sea Base, Northern Tier in MN, and now the new Summit Bechtel Reserve in WVA [which is where the National Jamboree is being held this year]) have used this criteria for at least 15 years or more, because they involve strenuous activities in remote locations that are difficult for emergency personnel to reach in a timely manner (at Philmont, for example, there have been instances where overweight trekkers had heart issues or other injuries in the backcountry, where they have had to truck or even airlift them out; also, much of the man-portable rescue equipment has a 300-pound maximum load capacity, so there’s that).

What is new is that the criteria now applies to all Scouts and Scouters for any high-adventure activity undertaken under the aegis of Scouting anywhere, even troop activities; this does not preclude obese members from participating in “normal” Scouting activities (such as summer camp).

It must be a jogger thing. We had a one do it 6 times over 2 months against my work building. At first we thought it was a very big, very sick dog until we saw the security camera coverage. One of my co-workers would go to work 1-2’s a week at 5:30 am and wait for her to do her thing. Finally he got lucky and followed her home. We’d already had the police involved and they went by later that day to basically tell her that technically the police couldn’t do anything but that we had her on tape and knew who she was. Haven’t seen her or her mess since.

He’d love doing that I think. I’m just not sure he has the aptitude for it. I see more phone calls in my future, to find a recording studio maybe? that would let him come in and talk to people who do the job. That’s what he needs I think, to talk to people who do all kinds of jobs, to see what he’d like to do, what the pay is, the good and bad sides of the job, etc.

The sad thing to me is that he entered high school thinking he could do anything. He endured such bullying and indifference that it totally stripped him of any sort of self worth or confidence. He was not at ALL encouraged in high school to go to any secondary education, any trade, NOTHING. He initially failed all the state mandated graduation tests, which didn’t help things. He graduated late as a result, and so we’ve been working this last year to just help him regain some security and equilibrium, to recover from what was for him, Hell.

Did your school district do all that integrated math nonsense? I swear, that was just the worst thing for my kid. Before they messed with it, you had Math 1,2 and then Algebra 1,2, Trig, Calc, Geometry,Statistics and then Physics and Chemistry all separate classes, with only the Math and Algebra being required for graduation(with Physics required as part of the science credits). After the changes, Math 1&2 was combined with Algebra(which then created a Math 3 class) which also taught trig and statistics ALL AT ONCE. It was a mess. The classes moved so fast there was no time for anyone who fell behind and no alternative for kids who were not ever going to be able to get through anything past Algebra. Half of his graduating class failed the graduation test the first time it was given.

If I hear one more time from someone that African Americans should feel lucky because at least they’re in (surely wonderful/) America now instead of (surely terrible/) Africa because of US slavery, I’m gonna yarf. Aside from everything else terrible about that kind of statement and the gross assumption that all Africa is some hellhole, it’s like they’ve never stopped to consider that stealing enormous quantities of able bodied people out of a region just might be a destabilizing force in that region and we have no way of knowing what Africa would have looked like today without that.

WH statement:

Michelle and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Helen Thomas. Helen was a true pioneer, opening doors and breaking down barriers for generations of women in journalism. She covered every White House since President Kennedy’s, and during that time she never failed to keep presidents - myself included - on their toes. What made Helen the “Dean of the White House Press Corps” was not just the length of her tenure, but her fierce belief that our democracy works best when we ask tough questions and hold our leaders to account. Our thoughts are with Helen’s family, her friends, and the colleagues who respected her so deeply.
