Sean Hannity: Did Obama compare himself to Trayvon because “he was part of the choom gang…?”

Wingnuts • Views: 34,305

Stupidity, meet my good friend Profound.

Video

The politician who is, you know, quick to stick his nose in all this first…you know, “the police acted stupidly,” “if I had a son he’d look like Trayvon,” and now the president says, “Trayvon could have been me 35 years ago.” This is not a particularly helpful comment…that the President is admitting that…I guess…what, that the President was part of the “choom gang,” and he smoked a little pot and did a little blow…I’m not sure how to interpret that because we know that Trayvon had been smoking pot that night. I’m not sure what that means.

MSNBC’s Melissa Harris Perry replies:

Video

Way to both completely miss the President’s point, and prove it at the same damn time.

OH MELISSA HARRIS PERRY JUST SHOWED HER RACISM. AND ISN’T SHE THE COMMIE FASCIST WHO DID THAT AD ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT TAKING CARE OF OUR KIDS??? THAT’S WHY GUNS AND AMMO ARE FLYING OFF THE SHELVES. THERE’S GONNA BE A PATRIOT REVOLUTION IF THIS KEEPS UP!!!

I love the assertion that Martin had been smoking pot THAT NIGHT. Isn’t it common knowledge that THC stays detectable in body fluids for many days after it is consumed? The fact that the medical examiner could find it in a tox screen tells us nothing about when he might have smoked it.

Even if he had, who cares? Cannabis doesn’t increase aggression like alcohol does.

This is fairly mild for Hannity. I keep waiting for one of the Fox “News” goons to suggest that Martin was going through the neighborhood that night recruiting for Al-Qaeda, although that’s probably old news on the Gold Standard of nut sites, Free Republic.

re: #2 JeffFX

Yeah, I agree, but that’s not the point. The point was to paint the kid as being actively engaged in something immoral or illegal at the time the incident occurred or to assert that Martin’s judgement could have been impaired. A positive tox screen for THC accomplishes neither. I’m amazed that it was allowed in court, given the prejudicial potential and the lack of useful information it could give the jury.

One of the president’s childhood friends gives a totally different description of a “choom gang.” Tom Topolindki describes it as a group of typical teens who formed their own kind of family, which is a far cry from the definition Hannity is providing to disparage the president. President Obama was honest about his drug use when he was young, so for Hannity to use it to try to smear him is low, very low. I can imagine that he has used some drugs in his past, but I don’t expect him to ever admit it. Poor Trayvon Martin has been dead for over a year and he’s still being attacked for doing things a lot of young people do/have done. What Hannity and his supporters want is for the rest of us to shut up and let them do all of our talking and thinking for us. In their minds, they run the country and anyone who disagrees with them is evil and deserves their condescension. It’s sad that no one can share any of his/her experiences without someone on the right accusing them of spreading hate and divisiveness. It just shows that they know they haven’t treated some of us as their equals. They want us to shut up so they don’t have to own up to what they have done. They have discriminated against everyone who is not a republican and believes what they believe, so it’s not only blacks that they are trying to silence.

Hannity needs to shut the fuck up. Sean, maybe because you’ve never been racially profiled like the president and thousands of black men in this country have you don’t understand what the president was saying but as a fellow white dude just shut up about things you’ll never know anything about.

Riddle me this.

Why is their such a Hate-Boner for Moffat. For all the complaints about Sexism, I can’t think of anything that bad. Not to mention Davies had some moments. (The Blow-Job dispensing slab of Concrete from Love and Monsters and the comments about Rose during the tunnel crawl in The Satan Pit). And Davies in terms of Christmas Specials and Season Finales had issues all over the place.

They found 1.5 nanograms of THC in Trayvon Martin’s blood. That’s a tiny amount, and almost certainly was not ingested recently.

I don’t know who your “friend” is, but he’s feeding you bullshit.

17 ProTARDISLiberal  Sun, Jul 21, 2013 9:39:37pm

Sorry to hijack the thread with that, but it is a genuine question. My only real issue with Moffat is River. I see what he was trying to do, but he choose the absolutely worst way to have a Love Story with timey-wimey elements.

Still, an improvement of the issues with Davies’ Christmas Specials and Finales, along with whatever the hell “Love and Monsters” was. And the issues with “Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks.”

Which is better than Jonathan Nathan Turners…..well a whole hell of a lot of issues. Too many for the character limit on the reply.

“Paranoia on Martin’s part would lend credibility to Zimmerman so the test results were allowed in.”

If you’re being tracked by an armed man, is it really paranoia?

21 Mike Lamb  Sun, Jul 21, 2013 9:52:52pm

re: #14 Dark_Falcon

What I had heard via my best friend was that the reason it was allowed in was that the evidence showed that Martin had recently smoked a good deal of pot and in some cases the level he smoked can a person paranoid. Paranoia on Martin’s part would lend credibility to Zimmerman so the test results were allowed in.

Did your friend watch “Reefer Madness” just before mentioning that bullshit?

22 goddamnedfrank  Sun, Jul 21, 2013 9:57:31pm

Also, Martin had every goddamned reason to be paranoid, you don’t need a low THC level to explain that. He was being stalked by an armed adult with hostile intent who’d already prejudged him as a suspect for no good reason and was referring to him as an asshole and a fucking punk. I don’t understand the credulity of people who want to believe that Zimmerman just magically suppressed all that obvious animus when he caught up to Martin, and somehow presented himself as a good samaritan there to help.

How do you show Zimmerman’s intent was hostile. It clearly wasn’t helpful, but you’re assuming it was malicious.

Zimmerman was playing the role of the Suspicious Guy You Should Get Ready To Shoot in every NRA pamphlet narrative of how you get raped in an alleyway by a stranger.

Why the fuck would ANYONE assume that an adult following a teenager they don’t know at night has attentions that aren’t “malicious”?

re: #26 goddamnedfrank

hey, DF wants to believe his friends who still like to skate on the dark side of the thin ice because every once in a while, a Dem or a liberal really does something stupid or heinous, see Weiner, Anthony or Jackson, Jesse Jr. The problem is, when someone on the left is busted, we generally excoriate them for doing the dirty and own up to the events in question being less than optimal and abide by the rule of law. The thing is, is that IOKIYAR is firmly in play at all times and when is the last time you’ve seen the R’s toss someone out of the tribe? The only time we appear to see this behavior is when they’re doing something perceived as being liberal (Christie praising Obama for the Hurricane Sandy relief, Rubio for proposing a semi-sane Immigration Bill), as for anything else, they close ranks and give the finger to the rest of the nation (see examples Vitter, David, and Akin, Todd). So each time we see these little nuggets of semiplausibility come out, a fair amount of us roll our eyes skyward dropping into immediate skepticism while those who are still recently shredding their echo chamber bubbles continue to want to believe in the best intentions of their former fellow travelers. It takes some folks multiple times of being burned by the hot iron of reality before realizing that its far wiser to believe that their former compadres are still beholden to those very adept web spinners who are very cognizant of what buttons to push to get their desired results and coerce folks back into the tribe rather than the recently accepted truth that those people are either delusional or manipulated by their own fears and biases.

They’re the same people who overlook Zimmerman’s own checkered past - a restraining order taken out against him by his ex-fiancee, and an arrest for “resisting an officer with violence” (albeit a charge that was eventually reduced and then waived when he entered an alcohol education program. He was also fired from a job as a security guard for being too aggressive. All of these facts suggest he could easily have been the aggressor that night.

John Hawkes gives an interesting write-up relating a recent paper of Indian middle to late paleolithic human population evidence with the increasing genetic evidence of unique Denisovan genetics among the indigenous of Australia and SE Asia east of the Wallace line:

Denisovans and the Middle Paleolithic of India

[…] To my mind, there is a singular point that any hypothesis must accommodate: indigenous Australians and Melanesians have substantial Denisovan ancestry, South and Southeast Asians, and peoples of Java, Sumatra and Borneo have at most a trace of Denisovan ancestry (“How widespread is Denisovan ancestry today?”).

We can’t easily explain this pattern without multiple waves of population movement into Southeast Asia. The later wave (or waves) of movement must have happened after the initial spread of people who would colonize Australia and Melanesia. This later wave (or waves) must have made up the vast majority of the ancestry of later Southeast Asians, including today’s hunter-gatherer peoples of mainland Southeast Asia and the peoples of the Andaman Islands. The source of this later wave must have been from some population that had Neandertal ancestors but did not have Denisovan ancestors.

[…]

Evidence is growing that we are descended from groups of anatomically modern humans from Africa that multiply interacted with other early human populations over a period of several tens of millennia. This would mean our modern ancestry is a kind of a network of ancestral populations, with dominant strands from a single population in Africa but with lots of multiply connecting other strands.

I think the 1950s comparison is apt, because there was a veneer of ‘there are no problems, there’s no ‘racism’ there’s just scientific acknowledgement of the inferiority of the black man. You had cultural relativists explaining that blacks were infantalized by black culture, and the natural tendency of blacks to be communists explained at length by many on the right, finally firmly established in the John Birch Society.

Indonesian Nazi-themed cafe to close amid outrage

The owner of a Nazi-themed cafe in central Indonesia said Monday he has decided to permanently close down amid intense pressure from home and abroad.

Henry Mulyana, who ran the Soldatenkaffee in the West Java provincial capital of Bandung, met with local authorities Monday, and tourism chief Herry M. Djauhari suggested that Mulyana change the name and theme of the cafe.

City officials had earlier expressed concerns about the cafe’s motives and worried it might incite hate and racism in the town, which is a tourist destination.

Mulyana said he is considering his options, but will not reopen the Soldatenkaffee cafe.

The cafe opened in 2011, but recent media reports about its Nazi-related memorabilia, including a red wall with a portrait of Adolf Hitler and a flag with a swastika symbol, have prompted angry responses from foreigners and Indonesians.

Mulyana insisted that he was not pro-Nazi but that he was instead using the decorations to attract customers.

It is the second time this month that Nazi images have provoked controversy in Southeast Asia. Last week, Thailand’s premier university apologized for displaying a billboard that showed Adolf Hitler alongside Superman and other superheroes, saying it was painted by ignorant students who didn’t realize Hitler’s image would offend anyone.

If you want to look and find bad hotels, it’s incredibly easy to do (just go on Kayak or any other travel site, and look for the zero or 1 star ratings) - even in the most well-to-do and affluent areas of the country. You’ll find plenty of 1 star hotels (or completely unrated for that matter).

Heck, there used to be hot sheet motels on Route 17 in Upper Saddle River, NJ (home to one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the country). Wouldn’t want to go and spend the night there. And even towns that were bankrupt like Stockton have decent motels (including chains like Holiday Inn or Best Western). It’s all a matter of wanting to look for the hotel/motel.

re: #70 lawhawk

I have heard that Yelp will only post reviews of 2 stars or less, and businesses have to pay to release the good reviews, does anyone know if that is true? Doesn’t seem legal.

73 lawhawk  Mon, Jul 22, 2013 6:07:07am

So, I was at home in the garden over the weekend, and spotted a baby rabbit. I knew that there was a nest under some of the bushes, and had seen them in there a few days ago, so it was neat to see it out of the burrow. However, it didn’t look like it was alive. It was completely still - didn’t look like it was breathing or anything. Since I was watering the lawn at the time, I sprinkled some water to see if it’d react. Nope. Nothing doing. Fearing the worst - I began to move the bushes away to get a closer view, and that’s when it sprinted away.

I’d have to say that’s a pretty good defense mechanism - playing dead isn’t just for possum. Apparently baby rabbits do something similar. They had me fooled, that’s for sure.

Other way around. Yelp has actually outed companies that would force their employees to give positive reviews or who pay for fake positives.

76 lawhawk  Mon, Jul 22, 2013 6:10:43am

re: #72 Vicious Babushka

I have no idea about Yelp - never did any reviews for them, but I’ve heard different stories about how Yelp and other services try to weed out the bogus reports - those that claim 5 star reviews that the establishment itself posts through socks, or the 1-star reviews that competition posts.

Zagat averages responses.

AAA sends out professionals to rate.

Other sites, including the travel sites, rely on user feedback - such as only allowing those who booked through the site to post feedback (similar to Angie’s List).

My favorite of these services is OpenTable, which I’ve found quite useful for making reservations - and get points that can be converted to dining certificates. Great for special events, or even casual dining.

Good point, especially since IIRC, the Magna Carta wouldn’t exist for another 150 years after that. RWNJs have a hard time adapting to things. Even 150 years after something they still can’t cope.

Ergo, we see the need to make a 17 year old kid a pot crazed mini-Heisenberg that needed to be cut down in the street like a rabid dog instead of a victim of a wannabe vigilante with a gun and a God complex.

Many of the noisiest RWNJs seem to miss the good old days, like before the Viking raiders and especially before all those Normans speaking French (well, Old French) showed up. But even Alfred I was pretty progressive for his day, so perhaps they pine for the even-older days.

Back then, most people really did believe in demons, witches and eye-for-eye, tooth-for-tooth punishments. Fischer and his ilk would fit right in.

The future of humanity?

World’s first IVF baby born after preimplantation genome sequencing is now 11 months old

The largest genomic institute of the world, BGI Shenzhen, China (hereinafter BGI), together with Reproductive & Genetic Hospital CITIC-XIANGYA (hereinafter CITIC-XIANGYA) announced today that they have successfully applied Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) to detect in vitro fertilized (IVF) embryos with genetic abnormalities. The successful application of preimplantation sequencing (the most advanced form of preimplantation genetic screening, PGS) opens a new chapter in the field of human assisted reproduction, providing new hopes for IVF couples.

In preimplantation sequencing, 7 to 12 cells are removed from morphologically normal human embryos 5 days after fertilization in vitro. Embryos are subsequently cryopreserved by vitrification, and samples are analyzed by using the latest DNA technologies to detect abnormalities. Only genetically intact embryos are transferred to the uterus during the subsequent cycle, with minimal or no hormonal stimulation.

Since 2010, as a result of collaboration between BGI and CITIC-XIANGYA, sequenced embryos from 33 couples were transferred, and 22 pregnancies were achieved. The success rate was 66.7%. Up to now, 17 healthy babies were born.

On August 24, 2012, the world’s first IVF baby sequenced before implantation was born in Hunan Province, China. Five days after fertilization in vitro, 7 embryos were biopsied and all samples were shipped to BGI for preimplantation sequencing. Based on a combination of NGS and bioinformatics analysis, 3 embryos were found to have normal chromosomal content and two of them were selected for transfer resulting in pregnancy. The baby is now 11 months old, healthy and developing normally.

It’s because those “pundits” are really sales people who are fed lines, often indulging in the absurd (to keep up interest) whether by sponsors or RW politicos. They pander to people’s fears and biases. There’s not a real intellectual to be found among any of them; in fact, money, not even politics, or principles or ethics, is their main motivation. They have their very own “get rich quick” schemes, lining their own pockets with OPM.

I’m sorry to hear your lunch got away.

I’m partisan in the sense that when given the choice between the Democrats and the GOP, I’ll take the center right party that occasionally has bouts of stupid (i.e., the Dems) over the reactionary, xenophobic, bigoted, far-right party of religious fanatics.

Also, these people are beyond parody or reason:

I meant I am not partisan in the sense that I think the Democrats are always right but yikes that’s stupid and these statements we see come from high and prominent conservatives. Scalia is the longest tenured USSC member and the now mentioned Perino was a press secretary for the previous Republican president. There’s something deeply wrong with the American right. I’ve always disliked the right but they’ve grown very fucked up due to having a black man in the WH.

Judicial activism- court rules in favor or against something I like or dislike
Strict constructionism- court agrees with my position.

Scalia’s an as big “judicial activist” if not more so than those he decries. Needs to be remembered that he had no problem upholding sodomy laws due to his own anti-gay bigotry.

“Hitler was an admirer of the 16th president [Lincoln] for all the obvious reasons.”

“Hitler’s language and actions were similar to Lincoln’s, who believed that state sovereignty was foolish compared to “saving the union.”“

“The 16th president had far more in common with the Nazi dictator than the Southern soldiers who died fighting for their country’s independence.”

“Conducting the first “total war” of the modern era — in which Lincoln’s armies intentionally targeted innocent women, children, and old men in the South — was nothing less than an act of “genocide” against Southerners.”

As I and others have said before on several occasions here on LGF, these people cannot be reasoned with. They are not arguing/governing in good faith. They are extremist, religious fanatics that fully and wholly believe that they are engaged in a holy war, one that they must win in order for the US to retain its status as God’s Favorite Country. They refuse to compromise because there can be no compromise against the commands of god. Calling them “The American Taliban” is not a joke, it’s an accurate description. If they had their way, our children would be forced to worship the christian god against their will in public schools and the US government would acknowledge the christian god as its source of law. This is already the case in some parts of the country, notably the deep south — for example, in Georgia it is illegal to purchase alcohol before noon on Sunday (this is an improvement over the previous version, which banned alcohol sales entirely on Sunday). There is absolutely no basis for this law, in any rational capacity, other than adherence to the christian religion.

These people cannot be reasoned with. They cannot be compromised with. They should not be tolerated. Their endgame is to turn this nation into a christian theocracy.

I read those descriptions of the “Choom Gang“‘s activities, too. They sounded like the sort of things that students were also doing at my prim, tea-and-biscuits, nerdy little Seven Sisters college. Court: Chevron Can Seize Americans’ Email Data

Last month, a federal court granted Chevron access to nine years of email metadata—which includes names, time stamps, and detailed location data and login info, but not content—belonging to activists, lawyers, and journalists who criticized the company for drilling in Ecuador and leaving behind a trail of toxic sludge and leaky pipelines. Since 1993, when the litigation began, Chevron has lost multiple appeals and has been ordered to pay plaintiffs from native communities about $19 billion to cover the cost of environmental damage. Chevron alleges that it is the victim of a mass extortion conspiracy, which is why the company is asking Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft, which owns Hotmail, to cough up the email data. When Lewis Kaplan, a federal judge in New York, granted the Microsoft subpoena last month, he ruled it didn’t violate the First Amendment because Americans weren’t among the people targeted.

Now Mother Jones has learned that the targeted accounts do include Americans—a revelation that calls the validity of the subpoena into question. The First Amendment protects the right to speak anonymously, and in cases involving Americans, courts have often quashed subpoenas seeking to discover the identities and locations of anonymous internet users. Earlier this year, a different federal judge quashed Chevron’s attempts to seize documents from Amazon Watch, one of the company’s most vocal critics. That judge said the subpoena was a violation of the group’s First Amendment rights. In this case, though, that same protection has not been extended to activists, journalists, and lawyers’ email metadata.

Today’s latest? North Dakota’s attempts to restrict access to abortion was stayed by the courts.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland in Bismarck granted a temporary injunction Monday that blocks the law from taking effect on Aug. 1.

The law was passed this year by the North Dakota Legislature. It would outlaw the procedure as early as six weeks into pregnancy and before some women know they are pregnant.

The law was one of four that the Republican-controlled Legislature and GOP Gov. Jack Dalrymple passed this year that combined make North Dakota the most restrictive state in the nation in which to get an abortion.

Bergen County has Blue Laws too - stores are pretty much closed Sundays - though the reasoning now is focused mostly on the relief from incessant traffic the rest of the week (which sort of ignores that traffic would be reduced if everyone could do weekend business on Sunday and Saturday instead of compressed onto Saturday. Boon for businesses that want to be open, and expand tax rolls - plus not lose as much business to New York or neighboring counties.

A new one to me. Saw it on my fb—in a different format of a warning from, of all people, Sheryl Crow.
Plastic Water Bottles

Email:

The original version of this email begins by saying “Many are unaware of poisoning caused by re-using plastic bottles,” and says “bottles are safe for one-time use only; if you must keep them longer, it should be or no more than a few days, a week max, and keep them away from heat as well.” The email says the bottles contain DEHA, which it calls a potential carcinogen.

A newer (2007) version of the email quotes an unidentified doctor as saying women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car because the heat and the plastic of the bottle have certain chemicals that can lead to breast cancer.

Fact:

These emails are apparently based on a student’s college thesis. In fact, DEHA is not inherent in the plastic used to make these bottles, and even if it was the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says DEHA “cannot reasonably be anticipated to cause cancer, teratogenic effects, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity, gene mutations, liver, kidney, reproductive, or developmental toxicity or other serious or irreversible chronic health effects.” Meanwhile, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), says diethylhexyl adipate “is not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans.”

That would be the son of Anwar al Awlaki. Al Qaeda propagandist, recruiter, and one of the spiritual leaders who was later killed by a UAV airstrike in Yemen. Originally a US citizen (as was his son).

Awlaki had been linked to the Fort Hood shooter and other terror attacks or plots.

Awlaki’s father (AbdulRahman’s grandfather) penned an article attempting to make the connection between the death and Martin, but it ignores a whole host of moral and ethical issues, not the least of which was that his son was an avowed terrorist - something the grandfather denies in the face of all evidence.

The son was killed along with other suspected al Qaeda terrorists 2 weeks after his father was killed in a similar raid.

ISTR, that the Crime Story TV series got canceled right when the story arc involved a early 1960s telegenic president and his attorney general brother who were pushing for more federal investigation of nationwide mob activities. And the two brothers liked the company of attractive women.

But that was 25 years ago, and my memory could be faulty.
