Bryan Fischer: Mighty Demon Slayer

Weirder than you know

Oh sure, you already know Bryan Fischer is one of the premier religious right bigots, but you probably didn’t realize how downright weird he is.

In this clip from his American Family Association webcast he explains how a demon was tormenting “some children” by threatening to kill their parents, until Fischer came to the rescue and saved the day with the sheer power of his godliness. (Midway through the story, it changes from “some children” to “the girl.”)

And Fischer himself is not immune to attacks from disembodied malignant presences. He says witches once sent demons on a midnight mission to grab his ankle and pull him out of bed. (He doesn’t say what the demons planned to do after this ankle-yanking maneuver, and I think it’s really better not to speculate.)

As part of their diabolical plot they also gave Fischer a monumental case of cotton mouth (demons think of everything), but he was finally able to fend off the ghastly creatures by croaking out the name of … you guessed it … Jeebus.

The sad thing: there are actually more than a few people who will watch this and believe every word.

Apparently, this spirit had been sent out to harm him by a coven of local witches and it grabbed him by the ankle as he slept and tried to pull him from his bed until he was able to rebuke it in the name of Jesus and drive it away.

I never hear about the buking. Only the rebuking. Maybe they aren’t doing it right the first time.

One things for sure; Fischer isn’t going to like the future. While nearly half the population over 65 is religious conservative, only 17% of 18-33 y.o.s are. 23% of 18-33 y.o.s are religious progressives, so the religious right hasn’t just lost the youth in general, its even lost most religious youth.

Yesterday I mentioned a kid who asked my son whether he knew about Jesus, and my son said, “Isn’t he the son of Zeus?”.

AIDS denialist suing one of his critics in federal court

The article in the link is constructed in a way that makes it a bit unwieldy to try to quote, but the short version is that a former cop (now a private investigator) who asserts that HIV does not cause AIDS is suing an AIDS activist because, essentially, the activist is arguing with him and his claims.

And speaking of claims, Mr. AIDS Denialist informs us that the HIV-AIDS connection is a hoax perpetrated by Big Pharma with the help of Teh Gheys.

Gay activism has been tied to HIV from the beginning. When the AIDS hysteria of 1983 fizzled to mortality levels of .0076% in 1986, CDC officials began to worry that taxpayers wouldn’t fund treatment for a small number of sick men. Drug makers needed activists to push drugs while the CDC needed sick men. To make that happen, drug companies sponsored dance parties where thousands of men were recruited in baptisms of depravity.

(Note that “Baptisms of Depravity” would be a good name for your punk band’s debut LP.)

My first impulse was to indulge in my usual ridicule and mockery of this supersititious quack, but I’ve done enough of that for now and I want to address it more seriously this time.
It is a national disgrace that this goes on in the 21st century. Advanced or even moderately rational thinkers from 50 or 60 years ago would have trouble believing it. I have trouble believing it myself at times. It is surprising that such flummery persists even in backward parts of the world, and among the barely literate. To see it among the nominally educated and the materially affluent, its stronghold here in the States, is almost unprecedented in modern times. Material progress has not led to an enlightened middle class, it has led to suburbs full of delusional fools, gibbering idiots, and gullible consumer units (formerly known as “families”). How is it possible that people graduate from accredited universities believing that the Earth is only 6000 years old, or that literal demons will appear to them at any moment? Where is this trend going? I won’t claim to know, but I fear the worst.

Jesus, there are still HIV denialists? 25 Years ago, before antiretroviral drug therapy, you could have said that it wasn’t completely proven, but now? The link between HIV and AIDS is about as solid as anything in Science.

Then again, you can say that about Evolution and AGW.

I guess we should ‘teach the controversy’ - “Here’s all the evidence that HIV causes AIDS, from the work of thousands of researches over more than 3 decades. Over there, several crazy people don’t believe it, and have no evidence to support their lack of belief. Whom do you believe?”

re: #75 Shiplord Kirel

Science teacher speaking here.

By the time most students reached my particular course, physics, in high school, they already had strong preconceptions stuck in their brains. Some from naivete, others from watching movies and cartoons that fudge on physics to make a good story. Add to that the requirement that you imagine, for example, that there is no gravity right now, so throw me that ball. What path does it follow, curved or straight? For a physics teacher, knocking preconceptions out of students’ heads and replacing them with correct concepts is the hardest part of the game.

Now add a thick layer of religious conservatism to those preconceptions, and the challenge becomes nearly insurmountable. “Rewiring” your brain to handle difficult concepts is hard work, but you have to be willing to try. There are too many people who just don’t care to try, and prefer to live in their benighted worlds where everything has a clear and final answer.

Rubio reconnects with tea party activists

Sen. Marco Rubio is renewing his outreach to tea party supporters and his advocacy for GOP causes as he struggles to repair his image as a conservative standard-bearer.

The shift comes after the potential 2016 presidential candidate pushed the Senate to approve an immigration overhaul bill that’s been panned by some on the right who could be crucial to his future.

Rubio joined about 50 conservative activists and other lawmakers Tuesday at a meeting of the Senate’s tea party caucus, putting him in a room with representatives of grassroots activists who helped fuel his unlikely Senate victory in 2010.

The Florida senator, considered a formidable presidential candidate in 2016 if he seeks the White House, spent months advocating for a comprehensive immigration reform proposal but has been largely absent from lobbying efforts since the process moved to the House. Instead, he has returned to conservative causes he has supported in the past, highlighting his opposition to President Barack Obama’s health care law by pushing for an elimination of its funding, backing a measure to place more restrictions on U.S. funding of the United Nations and opposing the White House’s choice to lead the Labor Department.

Reuters Climate Change Coverage Declined Significantly After “Skeptic” Editor Joined

A Media Matters study finds that Reuters’ coverage of climate change declined by nearly 50 percent under the regime of the current managing editor, lending credence to a former reporter’s claim that a “climate of fear” has gripped the agency.

David Fogarty, a former Reuters climate change correspondent, wrote that Managing Editor Paul Ingrassia, then serving as deputy editor-in-chief, identified himself as “a climate change sceptic” in 2012. As time went on, Fogarty alleged, “getting any climate change-themed story published got harder,” as some desk editors “agonised” over decisions and allowed articles to become mired in bureaucracy. Eventually, amid a “climate of fear,” Fogarty’s role was “abolished.”

This year, Reuters’ shift has apparently continued apace. An April 2013 article titled “Climate scientists struggle to explain warming slowdown,” later promoted by Drudge Report, claimed that short-term temperature variability “has exposed gaps” in scientists’ understanding of climate change, but neglected to quote any scientists on the issue — or refer to an article filed by the same reporter one week prior, which explained some of the alleged “gaps.”

I’m not feeling sorry for Weiner, but what kind of BS is this?

“Anonymous: The part that’s most annoying is that I was 22 and in a bad place, but if anyone asked him he would say the same thing about himself, yet he’s an adult. This was a bad situation for me because I really admired him. Even post scandal, I thought he was misunderstood. Until I got to know him. I thought I loved him. Pretty pathetic.

“Last August he even offered to help me get a condo in Chicago, without me asking. I’ll send screenshots of everything. I’m trusting you to keep my name out of it, because like I said, it was obviously a mistake. I was young and dumb. I just want people to really know he’s lying when he acts like he has changed.”

So—22 isn’t an adult anymore? And you’re not responsible because you don’t think you were an adult? Grow up. It wasn’t as though he lured you into anything—it was voluntary and you were not a minor. You have some major issues of your own. Get some therapy instead of trying to cash in on this and/or get your 15 min of “fame”.

And where’s the proof, other than the sexting, about the other allegations of Weiner getting you a condo in Chicago, the phone calls you claim you engaged in with him for 6 mos, etc?

And this, “I’m currently in talks with Anonymous. She has lawyered up in fear of Anthony Weiner, but she is willing to expose his sexual nature to TheDirty.com for the betterment of America. Story developing…- nik”

Come on, no lawyer in his right mind would allow a client to talk to this gossip-monger.

And BTW, Weiner didn’t specifically plead guilty to all these particular allegations, but acknowledged that there were other exchanges “out there”. Something he acknowledged the first time all this came out.

There is so much sleaze in this whole thing, it reeks so highly of narcissism on both sides, it’s hard to know where to begin. Not to mention, no dates on the sexting except what this woman says. Just how credible is she? And how credible is Weiner? I just don’t feel sorry for either one. It is what it is.

If, by the timing of this, it was intended to ruin Weiner’s run for mayor, I think it’s probably mission accomplished.

22 is adult, but the brain has another four or five years before it’s finished developing. A lot of underage behavior on the internet can at least be partially explained by frontal lobe disinhibition.

Not sure what Weiner’s excuse is.

In Climbing Income Ladder, Location Matters

[…]

This geography appears to play a major role in making Atlanta one of the metropolitan areas where it is most difficult for lower-income households to rise into the middle class and beyond, according to a new study that other researchers are calling the most detailed portrait yet of income mobility in the United States.

The study — based on millions of anonymous earnings records and being released this week by a team of top academic economists — is the first with enough data to compare upward mobility across metropolitan areas. These comparisons provide some of the most powerful evidence so far about the factors that seem to drive people’s chances of rising beyond the station of their birth, including education, family structure and the economic layout of metropolitan areas.

Climbing the income ladder occurs less often in the Southeast
and industrial Midwest, the data shows, with the odds notably low in Atlanta, Charlotte, Memphis, Raleigh, Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Columbus. By contrast, some of the highest rates occur in the Northeast, Great Plains and West, including in New York, Boston, Salt Lake City, Pittsburgh, Seattle and large swaths of California and Minnesota.

[…]

There’s an interesting interactive Flash panel in the middle of the article. By playing with the “parents percentile” parameter, from high to low setting, one can see that the “South”, i.e., southeastern US, has by far the most stagnated income mobility - really, immobility - by far.

In the South, everyone has their “place”, and apparently are supposed to stay there.

For Evangelical Pastor, A Road From Belief To Atheism

Jerry DeWitt spent most of his life working as an evangelical preacher in Louisiana. Then, two years ago, something happened.

He got a phone call from one of his parishioners asking him to pray for her seriously injured brother. DeWitt realized that he had no proof that praying was going to do anything to save this man and it was unfair to get the sister’s hopes up. He couldn’t do it.

DeWitt left the church and is now an atheist. The transition has not been easy. He has been ostracized from his community and his family, but says that he could no longer spend his life doubting the very existence of something that he was leading others to believe.

Jerry DeWitt is author of the book “Hope After Faith.”

Cruz: ‘Gay marriage’ leads to Christianity being defined as ‘hate speech’

In a recent interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network, host David Brody told Cruz that activists saw the opposition to same sex marriage as “hate speech from the pulpit.”

“If you look at other nations that have gone down the road towards gay marriage, that’s the next step of where it gets enforced,” Cruz agreed. “It gets enforced against Christian pastors who decline to perform gay marriages, who speak out and preach biblical truths on marriage, that has been defined elsewhere as hate speech, as inconsistent with the enlightened view of government.”

Its real simple. Quit saying people who don’t believe the same things as you are demons who will burn in hell for eternity, get back to that love thy neighbor stuff and there won’t be a problem.

N.C. lawmakers pass sweeping changes to gun laws

North Carolina lawmakers have approved a bill greatly expanding where concealed handguns are legally allowed.

The Republican-backed bill approved by both the House and Senate on Tuesday allows concealed-carry permit holders to take firearms into bars and restaurants and other places where alcohol is served as long as the owner doesn’t expressly forbid it.

The measure will also allow concealed-carry permit holders to store weapons in locked cars on the campus of any public school or university. Guns will also now be allowed on greenways, playgrounds and other public recreation areas.

It shall be unlawful for any person to possess, or carry, whether openly or concealed, any deadly weapon, not used solely for instructional or officially sanctioned ceremonial purposes in the State Capitol Building, the Executive Mansion, the Western Residence of the Governor, or on the grounds of any of these buildings, and in any building housing any court of the General Court of Justice.

Tonight’s baseball bachelor dinner: Salad Nicoise with seared Ahi, organic egg, shaved golden beets & carrots, and avocado (passed on the green beans as I have so many beets)…waiting for the Ahi to cool before assembling the salad…got bourbon to get me through until then.

i told my golden beets they had to get their own place and pay their own rent once they were old enough to shave

Dude, we’re talking about Bryan Fischer:

Jesus H. Christ on a crutch, I just read the part on DDT. “It’s so safe that African countries have begun spraying DDT indoors to protect their people from this deadly disease.”

No shit, Sherlock! That’s the most effective way to combat malaria with DDT, not spraying it everywhere so that the mosquitos evolve resistance.

Oh, wait. I see the flaw. EVOLVE. He’d have to believe things evolved to understand.

And even when he’s right, he’s wrong. The scientist in question was named J. Gordon Edwards and he did indeed eat DDT in debates over the substance.

Huh.

He has published his ideas in 21st Century Science and Technology, a publication of the Lyndon LaRouche Movement

re: #203 Dark_Falcon

And even when he’s right, he’s wrong. The scientist in question was named J. Gordon Edwards and he did indeed eat DDT in debates over the substance. But while he argued against banning DDT outright, Edwards did not favor returning to the days of outdoor spraying of the stuff.

Yes he did, that was his exact position.

Currently, no obvious efforts are being made to reduce the numbers of infective mosquito adults or larvae, and neither Brundtland nor any of the dozens of recent malaria researchers have proposed plans to help save human lives by killing mosquitoes or their larvae. Such humane preventive endeavors have not even been mentioned in Science in recent years! Instead, hundreds of millions of dollars are devoted to the search for vaccines, which might or might not be effective.

He’s not saying limit its use in homes. He’s saying use it everywhere there are mosquitoes, go after their larva and to use DDT on the waterways in which they breed. He never gave a shit about fostering resistance or about how many other species suffer, he’s a zealot. And there never was a ban on DDT use for vector control, it never even faced such a ban hypothetically.

It’s from Edwards’ bullshit “case study.”

216 GeneJockey  Tue, Jul 23, 2013 9:16:42pm

The problem with DDT is that it worked too well. It got used not just for mosquito control, but for agricultural uses, and OF COURSE, it led to resistant strains of mosquito. Then it stops working. For everything, not just agriculture.

Several countries that stopped using DDT stopped, not because of any ban, but rather because it didn’t work! And of course, those who want to attack environmentalism like to cite them as places where DDT was ‘banned’, and malaria cases increased - even though there was no ban.
