Border Patrol Considers Putting Razor Wire on Nogales Fence

Next up: Moats, Sharks, Lasers.

Concertina wire could be installed on the border fence to the east and west of downtown Nogales, much to the chagrin of the city council.

The wire, made of razor-sharp blades attached to coiled metal strands, was installed on the fence separating San Diego and Tijuana five years ago and the Border Patrol is considering a similar action in Nogales.

[…]

During his meeting with Lawson, Garino said, she told him that rather than place the wire on top of the fence, the wire would be installed about 10 feet above the ground on the U.S. side of the fence.

Lawson told Garino that the wire would act as a deterrent to prevent people from jumping the fence, he said.

“There’s been a lot of injuries - broken ankles, hips, and different injuries - from people trying to jump,” he said, noting that the Border Patrol’s concern about injuries was “understandable.”

However, Garino said, he has “concerns” about the dangers of installing razor wire on the fence.

“If somebody at night was to jump the fence, not knowing that on the other side of the fence, 10-feet high, waiting for him is the razor wire. I don’t know what conditions we would find that person there,” he said. “Is it better for that person to break an ankle or is it better for that person to be tangled in that wire?”

[…]

The cost to the Nogales Fire Department for extricating illegal border-crossers entangled in the wire was a point of concern for the council on Wednesday.

Parada asked staff whether the city could hold the Border Patrol responsible for “picking up the tab” on healthcare costs for people caught in the wire.

City Attorney Jose Machado said that department heads could instruct their personnel to take care of the injured person without taking the person into custody, which would make the city responsible for the costs. He noted that the federal government is responsible for injuries sustained within 60 feet of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Let’s see… broken ankles or costly concertina extractions? Deterrence, or more apprehensions? And who will pay to treat the injured?

You can see from the photo that Nogales is really one town with a wall running through it.

In this file photo from October 2012, a Border Patrol vehicle stands watch at the corner of West International Street and Hereford Drive in Nogales, one of the areas where the agency is reportedly considering installing concertina wire. Photo by Jonathan Clark.

Ten foot fences increase the sale of twelve foot ladders. Concertina wire increases the sale of horse blankets and moving pads:

Net Migration from Mexico Falls to Zero—and Perhaps Less

“… The sharp downward trend in net migration from Mexico began about five years ago and has led to the first significant decrease in at least two decades in the unauthorized Mexican population. As of 2011, some 6.1 million unauthorized Mexican immigrants were living in the U.S., down from a peak of nearly 7 million in 2007, according to Pew Hispanic Center estimates based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Over the same period, the population of authorized immigrants from Mexico rose modestly, from 5.6 million in 2007 to 5.8 million in 2011.”

As proposed, this sounds like a nightmare, bureaucratic or otherwise, waiting to happen. If this goes through and the Border Patrol puts it inside the US side of the fence where people on both sides can’t see it, someone’s gonna jump the fence, get caught in this shit and get seriously maimed or even killed.

Of course the RWNJs would love it if that happened, because they tend to love death and dismemberment cloaked as “deterrence”.

Razor wire? Why stop there? How about claymore mines, a moat full of crocodiles, or sensor-triggered flamethrowers? Or we could go full Maginot on them with buried forts, machine gun bunkers and artillery turrets zeroed on every square foot of the border. We have a shitload of old tank turrets and earth moving/concrete contributors contractors need the work, so it’s a win-win. Best of all, it won’t even seriously inconvenience anyone who tries to sneak across, let alone harm them in other ways.

Pennsylvania county to issue same-sex marriage licenses despite ban

Officials in Montgomery County have agreed to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, though the state has a ban on same-sex marriage.

The county’s register of wills, D. Bruce Hanes, said he wants to come down “on the right side of history and the law.”

A lesbian couple contacted him last week to apply for a marriage license. The two women later changed their minds after talking to the American Civil Liberties Union. They feared their license would be invalidated. But Hanes is still prepared to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

“Had the couple sought the license today, I would have issued it and wished them all the freedom, independence, happiness and rights that our commonwealth’s Constitution purports to grant to them,” Hanes said.

immigration isn’t just a “build a fence” and forget about it issue, some come because the believe in America, some to rejoin family, others to find a job. The people that want to come here are going to find a way, via a coyote running them thru some gap cut in the fence, a tunnel or a ladder and a horse blanket or hidden in the back of some vehicle. A good part of the reason that Immigration is down is because the economy is bad, no jobs, people don’t come unless there’s work. Stringing Razor wire seems just a tad extreme to attempt to solve the problem of a twisted nail with a wrecking ball.

The other part of that equation are the industries that depend on the labor of illegal immigrants because no one else will take those jobs.

Agriculture, for one. Meat packing and processing. Construction. Hotels. There are a lot of industries that will gladly look the other way and pay people in cash or under the table to meet demand and/or keep costs down.

we have another issue that the R’s simply refuse to acknowledge, the T’ohono O’odham tribe that has reservations south of Tucson and straddling the Mexico border from the town of Sasbe to the Yuma proving grounds has a migratory family structure where members of the tribe cross back and forth multiple times a week and are now being bottlenecked into a few crossings because of the “fence solution”. Granted that is some of the most inhospitable land in the US and making people move an extra 50 to a hundred miles because some retiree in Sun City is afraid of being robbed by their lawn crew is decidedly inconvenient. Good luck selling that same solution to some anglos, but since they’re native americans, meh.

It sounds apocalyptically weird to me, but I think there is a real danger here. There are quite a few of these conspiracy-crazed law enforcement officers around the country, mostly sheriffs and Podunk police like this Kessler loon. The attention they get from Alex Jones and other nutjob media tends to magnify their delusions and, in particular, the extent to which they think ordinary people share those delusions.
It’s possible to envision a scenario in which their cooperation; indeed, leadership; would allow a militia or other RW mob to gain effective control of a small town or suburb. Higher level law enforcement is really spread pretty thin, and it might be many hours before major resources could be brought together to regain lawful control. This depends entirely on how strongly the kooks want to resist. They probably won’t but it is not impossible that they will. With their blood up, it is entirely possible they won’t surrender to a handful of state troopers and the latter would have to call for major reinforcements. In the meantime, the nuts could attempt to “clean out” liberals, democrats, “feds,” gays, and “others.”
I still won’t recommend that liberals and sane people in general arm themselves, but I am armed and so are many others. I know some people would be queasy at this, it might seem like allowing yourselves to be manipulated into playing the enemy’s game. Real armed confrontation is not their game though. Their game is a power fantasy for low functioning intellects and they are bound to disintegrate if their victims strike back with the hard hand of reality. If one decides to take that route, I recommend a 12 gauge shotgun. They are cheap, reliable, and lethal. Ammunition is also available since shotguns don’t figure much in the RW uprising fantasy for some reason and they aren’t hoarding it.

59 Shiplord Kirel  Tue, Jul 23, 2013 11:43:44pm

The real reason for this is so the feds will have the wire handy so they can tear it down quickly and use it to form enclosures for the patriots and Christians they are planning to round up.

For razor wire nuance:
The top photo is classical ‘barbed’ wire. Its use now is just agricultural.

Image: 13_04_14—-Barbed-Wire_web.jpg

The types pictured here are called ‘razor’, but there are great differences. Top 3 types, labeled ‘BTO’ on this manufacturer’s chart, are the sort of thing the military uses in ‘concertina’, deployed and moved on the ground. We use it on base and in exercises. It hurts.

The bottom ‘razor’ wire is not used normally by the military except in high-security installations like the tops of fences at the post confinement facility. If you spend any time in it, it will kill you.

The Wilmington Insurrection of 1898, also known as the Wilmington Massacre of 1898 or the Wilmington Race Riot of 1898, occurred in Wilmington, North Carolina starting on November 10, 1898 into the following days; it is considered a turning point in North Carolina politics following Reconstruction. Originally described as a race riot, it is now observed as a coup d’etat with insurgents having overthrown the legitimately elected local government, the only such event in United States history.

Oh fuck—I could have done without this page. Razor wire and a batshit police chief, who just 5 yrs ago, would probably have been fired for his remarks and actions.

I understand the dynamics now of the difference between the 1950s when I was growing up, and now. This isn’t meant as some kind of academic meandering, but my impressions as I’ve lived through the last 60 yrs. It has been a rough ride and it looks as though it’s going to get rougher.

At least in the 1950s, you could tell a racist to STFU without fear of getting shot—if you were white, of course, and no one used the “n” word in civil discourse. Now, you’ve become the enemy—in private and in public and the threat of physical harm can be real. Mexicans still came over the border illegally back then, but because most were coming over to do farm work, no one cared—if you were white and benefited. Everyone knew people were “queer” but “those people” usually kept to themselves—in the closet—less frightening to straight people. In fact, everyone knew their “place”. Everything was “unseen” but tolerated; it was only a short time after the horrors of WWII and the cold war was on, so fighting the “communist menace” was the leading topic. The 60s changed that with civil rights legislation and various movements for equality, bringing many topics into the open, but a lot of people, esp starting in the ’80s, thought all that was settled, and directed their energies toward making money and not paying attention to its geopolitical implications and long-term implications. It was the era of “trickle down” economics and not much else. Dissenters were seen as leftover hippies and commies who had an ax to grind. As a nation, we became complacent.

Talking about the rights of the oppressed is now open and happening, we have the internet to spread our points of view. The fascists have been coming out of the woodwork and, unfortunately, there is little discourse among those dissenters, even those in charge, in public office and on the airways. Their message isn’t even carefully crafted anymore using code words, but blatant. Russia is full of oligarchs making money, no longer a real threat, and China is making billions for our own oligarchs. Wealth disparity is at an all time high and people are suffering because of it. For ordinary people, the world is becoming our back yard and our front yard and we’re learning that we’re really all citizens of the entire planet, even if we stay in place, but if we’re to survive, there must be free movement and cooperation among all people. This is a frightening for those low-information types out there who think they’re becoming “lesser” and losing “liberty” because more people are demanding the same freedoms the most privileged among us have—those who are white, male, and straight.

There has to be an enemy, and it’s ourselves. But just as we overcame the fascism of the 1930s and ’40s, we will overcome this era, too. In a way, this is far more serious than the Civil War which tended to be more geographical. Freedom won over slavery, and we ask, who would go back to that era? Unfortunately, some would. While President Obama is an inspiration for many, he is an interloper, the “anti-christ” even, for far too many others.

The fascist-minded are spread across the breadth and depth of this country, they are loud, they have backing, they are the “sleeping giant”, and they don’t think before they act. They know how to intimidate, how to work the law to their advantage, how to twist their message, and they don’t listen to reason. They have co-opted religions, education, the law, the very Congress we depend on.

We just have to fight harder and longer. It is the battle for the heart and soul of this country and for our very survival.

There is a particular pattern the Right Wing uses in dealing with racist/homophobid/sexist utterances: ignore them until someone points them out, then start shouting the person who complains down while simultaneouly relativizing and rationalizing the statements away.

Interesting, but kinda creepy too. That site is correct, there’s definitely a lot of pieces to the puzzle missing. Also, I thought GZ was in fear for his life and in hiding? Why then is he driving around about a mile from his home? It’s also odd that there’s no mention of this on any social media belonging to those involved. Especially given the notoriety of GZ and the supposed severity of the accident. No police photos? No dash cam film? It is weird.

But, the offering of money for info about the jurors and stalking the family who GZ supposedly saved and posting info about their kids gives me the creeps. I know you have to dig to get a story, but ffs, you don’t have to publish every detail.

re: #74 Justanotherhuman

Yeah, they did say though that the pics came from their Facebook pages(the mom’s I think), which adds to the creep factor IMO. But then again, set your status to friends only and stuff so you don’t end up with pictures all over the internet. I think people still don’t get that once stuff is out there online, you are going to have one hell of a time controlling it, it’s pretty much impossible.

But it does look like this whole thing was a cheap PR stunt to try to revive someone’s reputation from being a total murdering asshole. The biggest red flag is no accident scene photos and no record of the fire dept responding. A few years ago I was in an accident, some lady slammed into the back of my car while she was speeding. No one was hurt beyond a bump or bruise and there were still photos taken by the cops(and I took some for insurance purposes-both cars were totaled) and the FD showed up with an ambulance. There was even a detailed accident report posted online a few days later.

re: #75 A Mom Anon

Yes, funny that. Esp if it was a “rollover” accident. Didn’t these people even take their kids to the ER, or request it, for a checkup even if they felt OK?

This was a one vehicle “accident” with driver fault and I imagine the ins carrier which has to pay the collision claim is going to be pretty upset that no photos were taken at the scene. Good luck w/that.

Good questions. I suspect he is getting some funding from Wikileaks and others. But how long until that well runs dry? As for protection, I don’t think he is really going to need any. I highly doubt the U.S. is going to try and do a snatch and grab on his sorry ass as the Political ramifications of such an act outweigh what it would be worth to bring him back to the U.S.

I suspect in the end, his application for asylum will be denied and he will be asked to leave the Country. That only leaves the question of which South American Country will take him.

Gas well in the Gulf continues to burn

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — An out-of-control natural gas well off the Louisiana coast continued to burn Wednesday after it caught fire following a blowout that prompted the evacuation of 44 workers, authorities said.

Video at the link.

90 lawhawk  Wed, Jul 24, 2013 6:40:29am

Tennessee Titans LB Jonathan Willard being hailed a hero after pulling a family from a burning car. Photographic evidence to boot.

Willard, who signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent out of Clemson after the 2013 NFL draft, told Hood that he spotted a car with black smoke coming out of it while driving from South Carolina to Tennessee for the Titans’ upcoming training camp.

Sensing the danger that the woman, three children and dog were in, Willard reportedly sped up, flashed his brights and honked his horn in an attempt to catch the attention of the driver, finally getting her to pull over. From there, the linebacker sprung into action.

When she pulled over, the car was really on fire at that point. The driver, she acted like she was in some kind of daze or something. She told me that she didn’t stop because she didn’t think it was her car that was on fire. Another guy stopped, and we managed to get the kids and the dog out and get them to safety, and then I finally got the woman out.

While you’d like to think that it would be common sense to help the family when the car was billowing smoke on the road, Willard told USA Today that several people just passed by without stopping to see what they could do to help.

Nice to see that some people can do the right thing.

I think the video they have up was from before it caught fire. If so, that “smoke” is actually raw Natural Gas being vented from the top of the well.

Edit. Went back and re-watched the video. It was shot shortly after the well blew out.

Why is it so hard for some people to realize that the Democrats and Republicans flipped their positions on civil rights in the 1950s, and the racists stayed with the GOP, even though the GOP was the Party of Lincoln? 100+ years of history intervene and reshape the political parties.

The DailyKos Snowden fan club post over today’s deal is pure nuts and very amusing:

Brilliant media strategy by Snowden/Wikileaks
Love him or hate him, one would have to agree that Snowden and Wikileaks have played this set almost flawlessly. Their media strategy has been extremely effective.

I wonder if they could ferry him to Venezuela by submarine

Take care of him Russia…he’s an American treasure.

Bad day for the Snowden haters. Great day for lovers of transparency and the free flow of information.

Let’s totally ignore that many prominent conservatives during the actual Civil Rights Movement were busy labeling the movement as communist sympathizing. I’d like the idiots on twitter who harp on about the Democrats being the real racists to name at least one prominent liberal opponent of civil rights from that era. I can name easily five conservatives who opposed it: Thurmond, Buckley, Goldwater(voted against CRA), Reagan(ran in opposition to bans on housing discrimination in California), and pretty much everyone who signed the Southern Manifesto which did include some Republicans.

Snowden says he’ll find a job in Russia and make a life there. He does understand that there’s a reason US companies outsource development work to Russia, and it’s not because they pay their employees high salaries. He’ll be lucky if he makes 40k, unless he’s hired by the FSB…and even then he can expect an honest and thorough evaluation of his skills by his new colleagues…a padded resume won’t impress them, and if the quality of his stolen intel isn’t up to snuff, then they may just dismiss him. Then the US will start looking good again.

One thing that you see pointed out is a higher percentage of Republicans voted for the CRA than Democrats. This is factually correct but ignores the fact that the Southern Democrats were a conservative bunch by and large. The few Southern politicians that favored Civil Rights were liberals. or moderates. And let’s not ignore the fact that Nixon and later Reagan wanted and got their votes later. Even the RNC chair in 2004 admitted the harm the Southern Strategy did.

true and by doing so, attempting to paint their side as the good guys based on positions of 150+ years ago, completely ignoring the more recent positions and screeds of the last 60. This is amazing:

“For someone like me, who struggles to get to sleep at night, it will be a big relief to have another major artery that feeds Manhattan,” said James Roberts, the deputy commissioner of the city’s Department of Environmental Protection, the tunnel’s builder. “Tunnel No. 1 has been in continuous service for a century, and because of that we’ve never had a chance to even inspect it.”

Meanwhile, the problem with Tunnel No. 2, which was finished in 1936, is that it serves only Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. For just over 80 years the fate of Manhattan has hinged on a single, increasingly leaky, now 96-year-old conduit.

Infrastructure in the country is what keeps the economy going. Watch how everything can come to a standstill if a bridge fails, a road becomes impassible, a water main fails, a sewage treatment plant is overrun by flooding, etc.

Yet, our national spending to expand, replace, upgrade, or maintain these items is woeful compared to the need.

New York City has been working on NYC Water Tunnel 3 since the 1970s. It’s a 40+ year project, and it’s not done yet. Yet, when it’s completed it will allow the DEP to close the original water tunnel for repairs. One of the reasons that they need to do so is that the original tunnel is leaking water at a prodigious amount, and that’s costing taxpayers and damaging property along the way. If the tunnel actually failed, it would put most of NYC into a severe water shortage situation, even though the source of the water is unaffected. We’d have no way to get the water from the upstate reservoirs to the City.

Just finished reading the whole article. It must’ve been a tough sell to get the funding for such an (incredibly necessary) invisible project.

This is total bullshit, from a guy who accuses others of fanning the flames of racism. Michelle Obama has done significant outreach to the Hispanic community, like most Dems and few Republicans. She supports immigration reform, just like her husband and nearly ALL Democrats (unlike a large majority of Republicans).

For 5 years, she’s been speaking about our obesity epidemic, in all communities and among all ethnic groups. She busted out the Hispanic stats because she was talking to a Hispanic audience. She would have used black stats or Texas stats or children only stats if she had been speaking to such an audience.

re: #257 geoffm33

It’s why the project has been going for 40 years. Funding hasn’t been what it should have been (low levels meant the project would proceed slowly), but the City and DEP knew that it had to be done. There’s no other option. The construction has picked up pace in recent years with changes in how the city charges its water bills (higher fees, and new water meters, etc.)

It’s the kind of project where the sandhogs could have multiple generations working on the project. It could have started when the grandfather was still involved, and now the grandson is helping finishing.

The scale of some of the project is just mind boggling:

The Van Cordlandt Park valve chamber. The tunnels are 60 miles long.

For a fun time, ask any of these people who think welfare recipients LIKE being on welfare and intentionally turn down chances to rise above it: “If welfare is so great and so easy to get on, why haven’t you quit your job and flushed your assets to be on it? I thought it was paradise?” From my observations it’s about a 20/80 chance between getting Um blurgh (splutter) b-because I have principles! and dead silence.

For an even more fun time, ask them why government programs — the ones which try to pick up the slack on what employers wouldn’t provide for their employees — don’t actually count as a taxpayer-funded subsidy for the more skinflint among business owners. 50/50 chance between Why u hate rich ppl??? and head asplode.

DHS was part of the larger reorganization of border control and INS into one department rather than separate agencies operating independent. Centralization of border and homeland security makes sense, but there have been ongoing problems in dealing with the TSA and airport security, despite the intervening decade in trying to get security right. We’re still treated to security theater at airports (and no real security for rail/bus and other transit modes).

Exactly. The fault line on civil rights has always been region, NOT party. Large congressional majorities (70% D, 80% R) voted FOR it. And those numbers were achieved with only about 5% support in the South but a whopping 90% in the rest of the country. And sadly, this is still the case. The South is culturally distinct from most of the rest of the nation: far less progressive on minority and women’s rights, far more reliant on religious fundamentalism as a guiding social force, far more homophobic, and less overall tolerance for diversity, modernity and change.

VDARE: Latinos Will Back Anti-Immigrant GOP Because They Want to Be White

Sailer writes that eventually, becoming the “White Party” will help Republicans gain support among Latinos and Asians who would rather join the White-GOP than the Democratic “Black Party.”

Just like Rep. Louie Gohmert , Sailer claims that the key to winning Hispanic support is opposing immigration reform.

“If Americans whites started treating themselves with self-respect (e.g., don’t roll over for illegal aliens with fifth-grade educations), the Latinos would more or less fall in line as they tried to be white in an American where whiteness is no longer demonized,” Sailer explains. “Hispanic and Asian voters should be encouraged to understand the central American political reality: they only get to choose between being the junior partners in the White Party or junior partners in the Black Party.”

Conservatives Desperately Move To Shut Down Government Over Obamacare

Running out of time and options, conservatives are exploring new ways to corner Congress into shutting down the government this fall unless Obamacare is defunded. But they aren’t likely to achieve much more than giving Republican leaders heartburn.

Conservatives and right-leaning Republican lawmakers have floated the tactic for years. But now, having lost the 2012 election, and with health care reform’s major provisions set to take effect, they’ve gotten more desperate, and see it as their last chance to stop the law.

In one example of an unusual move, the advocacy arm of the Heritage Foundation — Heritage Action — announced Tuesday it will grade lawmakers on the basis of whether they sign on as cosponsors of — not merely vote for — a bill by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) to prohibit any funding of Obamacare in the annual budgeting process.

Anyone who gets a good grade from Heritage is obviously a worthless sack of shit.

I am glad that Boehner and Cantor condemned King’s absurdly bigoted comments but what the hell were they thinking in the first place having this guy on a committee involving this issue. They know who he is and what he’s all about so their outrage is just a feigning IMO.

Beck: ‘We’re A Society That Has Literally Gone Insane’

Beck wears condom glove and ‘birth control nose ring’ to mock MSNBC host

Please proceed.

Everytime he speaks, I think to myself dude “It’s nice that you’re finally admitting that you have a problem, now will you please get off the airwaves and address them” but then I remember he’s projecting again. Beck has all the maturity of an 10 year old boy.

In my observations, usually the people on the left who fall hard for guys like Amash and Rand Paul are people who won’t be adversely effected by their regressive policies. Props on the circular political spectrum model too. It is too true.

Amash is totally new to me. There is no alternate universe where either of the Pauls is ‘Left”.

Nah you misunderstand me. Neither guy is left but both guys sometimes attract left wing fanboys and girls because of their stands on certain issues. Taking Ron Paul and drugs, some lefties think he’s cool because he was against the drug war- ignoring that Ron Paul would be okay if states had laws that sentenced drug users and dealers to life in prison.

If they’re old enough to vote, I don’t think those lefties could ever find their way to a polling place.

Amash factoids: Amash started the revolt against Boaehner by voting for Raul Labrador for Speaker of the House.
My eejit Paultard freshman rep, Thomas Massie, in turn, voted for Amash for Speaker.
