Hey, Obama did a shitty thing that I’m upset with him for.

guardian.co.uk

Basically, we’ve changed sentences laws so that crack isn’t penalized at much higher rates than cocaine, which was just straight-up racist. The DOJ is fighting to keep the sentences of already-incarcerated prisoners intact, even if they were incarcerated five seconds before the new law came into effect. This is shitty.

The reason he’s doing it, I know, is because if he did do it, the headline would be, “Obama releases thousands of crack dealers”. And I hate that, too, I hate that this wouldn’t be celebrated, that even though these people are in prison for non-violent drug offenses people would be scared shitless by their sudden release.

I hate where we’ve gotten to with our culture in the US towards prison, towards criminals, towards felons. There’s a strong streak of racism in it, a strong streak of deterministic, Gods-will attitude, but most of all it’s just a desperately cruel, pathetically arrogant attitude, as though all of us don’t have the capacity to be a criminal.

So I’m mad at Obama, but I understand why he’s fighting it. It’s because of politics, of the politics of prisoners in the US, and I really fucking hate how goddamn cruel we are in that regard.

700 Club: Climate Change Helps Environment and Civilization, SUV Owners Treated Like Witches

Robertson, a climate change denier who has without a hint of irony criticized climate scientists as “nutty” and “fanatics,” unsurprisingly ate up Goreham’s claims that humans play no role in climate change and that higher CO2 levels help the environment.

“Warmer periods have actually been better for civilizations,” Goreham argued. “We have less extreme weather, we have longer growing seasons and we have more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere now, which is actually greening the planet.” “That’s good!” Robertson replied.

Goreham lamented that SUV owners and power company officials may be treated like witches who were burnt at the stake in the Middle Ages: “There were many people in the Middle Ages that were blamed for causing the cold temperatures and the poor crops and they labeled them witches, they burned them. And so today we blame it on our neighbor’s SUV or a power plant, it’s a little bit of a medieval thing.”

As I mentioned in the dead thread, he’s not going anywhere. He’s got a big campaign warchest, and he’s going to use it. And even if he did withdraw, and spent the rest of his time warning people not to vote for him, the Election Board isn’t going to take his name off the ballot either, since that would add to the costs for the election. We’re stuck with him on the primary ballot, and still expect a significant percentage of voters to pull his name [pun intended] (and yes, the City is going with the old fashioned lever ballots - not the computerized ballot systems because of the problems in getting reliable counts with the new systems despite spending tons of money).

The other thing is as we saw in Wisconsin, Republicans say “Oh it’s just so easy to get an ID.” So what do they do? They close down DMV offices where you can get these IDs. Rush & Wiles: Obama’s Civil War Starting Any Day Now

The pair tried to outdo each other to see who was first to warn that Obama was a communist bent on inciting a civil war. Wiles said that he predicted in 2008 that Obama’s would incite a Marxist revolution and try to “start a civil war” just as Abraham Lincoln did.

Rush, however, saw Obama’s plan to “foment a Marxist revolution” develop “before 2007 was out.” He told Wiles that he now fears “there’s any number of things he can do to push the button and have that take place and he’s just getting his ducks in a row.”

Later, Rush charged that people who refuse to believe their claims about the looming civil war are simply in denial, lamenting that “it’s not going to be apparent to them until the bullets are flying.”

Wait, Lincoln started the Civil War? I must have missed that bit.

Fwiw, I happened to talk to a top personnel recruiter this morning, a personal friend. In response to a direct question, she told me that many HR managers are indeed very negative about gun-nuttery and, increasingly, conspiracy beliefs, and they do look for them in candidates. They don’t advertise it, of course, but the consideration is there.
The usual suspects would howl “discrimination,” and it is, but it is not unlawful discrimination. This is a point that escapes many of the consumer units (formerly “people”) out there: Every employment decision involves discrimination in the literal sense. Only certain explicitly defined forms of discrimination are illegal, and potentially violent crazy people are not a protected category under the law.

Hmm. See if it’s limited to gun nuttery or just a passing admission being into the sport at all or simple ownerhip. Here in SoCal, if you so much as put 1984 Olympic Air Rifle competitor you are done. Insta trash bin. Take that far enough (like in some neighborhoods here) and it’s anyone but a well versed hipster need not apply. Well we do have that already pretty commonly.

We all know to hide our real hobbies and put something like instagram in the personal interests & hobbies part. Now Facebook is your prior reference. FB password and all right?

Fort Drum, north of there, has had soldiers on snowmobiles hung up in the wires.

The joys of the Tug Hill Plateau. Where some buildings come equipped with second story entrances, just in case the first floor gets completely snow-bound.

This is a weird dichotomy though. You’ve got in one breath right wingers who claim that because Lincoln, Thaddeus Stevens, Charles Sumner, and others were Republicans and because Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Nathan Forrest, etc were Democrats it means the Republicans today in 2013 are the party of racial progress and racial equality and that the Democrats are the party of secession and white supremacy. And then you’ve got another breath where you’ve got people like this Rush guy and Rand Paul’s former top aide who call Lincoln a tyrant and claim he started the Civil War.

Yup.

It pulled hard-right a number of years back, but then the guy who owns it reconsidered a couple of years ago and it pissed off a bunch of the regulars. It seems it may need an alignment again.

Charles, are you in need of re-alignment? I’ve got a good Chiropractor if you do.

There’s obviously no uniform standard being applied here, since there are a lot of different employers and different HR managers. Some don’t care at all, and some are complete paranoid nutballs about it, but the general trend is toward increasing scrutiny. To me personally, gun ownership and participation in shooting sports would not be a deal-breaker at all, since I do those things myself. If they are combined with brooding conspiracism, though, that is “nuttery” and it is a red flag. Others would apply other standards, according to their level of knowledge and the specific industry. Airlines are particularly sensitive about it, for example. To the surprise of some, gun manufacturers are also sensitive about nuttery as they define it, and they will look for it, too.

Now sources are claiming that Huma was going to kick Carlos to the curb last fall. Yet, not only did she stick it out, but she’s now out there making excuses/providing cover for Dangerman.

Easy for me to say she should have kicked him to the curb when she had a chance, especially when raising a kid, but he’s a sleazebag and she doesn’t deserve any of this.

Makes me think this is somehow okay with her. Some kind of arrangement. Reminds me of that ball player who gets one cheat a year according to the wife.

This seems pretty weird to some, but we have seen stranger things.
