This video seems like a clip from a longer story.

A few moments there it sort of reminded me of the one-off Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Cute alert:

Super-cute baby zonkey, not for sale, probably sterile

Half zebra and half donkey, the fuzzy little zonkey named Ippo was born one week ago on an animal reserve near Florence, Italy.

Cool day here, for a late July. Looks like the remnants of a tropical system which drifted too far north. A rare summer day that is quite pleasant, wish we had more like this.

What a strange, disconcerting video… triggers a whole truckload of cognitive dissonance. I have no idea what he was trying to say, but to me an optimistic song usually sung by a child juxtaposed with the violence & cynicism of the adult world means… Well, I guess I think it means that optimism & hope for many in the world—including children—is a luxury, an unattainable fantasy even.

What a depressing reminder.

Maybe it’s a bit autobiographical.

Today, Schneider’s been sober for 15 years. He is now focused on building a life with his 5-year-old son. However, Schneider and his wife separated six months after their son was born, finalizing the divorce in 2009.

“The divorce was definitely the worst experience I’ve had to go through. The one real, true failure in my life was my marriage,” Schneider admits.

Yet from that failure, he has built not only a strong, loving relationship with his son, but also worked hard on himself.

So. As to the video, that’s Bob. He has had a standing gig at the Saxon Pub on South Lamar for years. She Who Must Be Obeyed and I have spent many a Monday sitting in (often, back in the day, sharing a jar with Sandra Bullock when they were together) listening to him. SWMBO has played with him on numerous occasions. He’s a stylist, who puts his mark on whatever song he does.

Oh, and I just got 1,200 gallons into my rainwater tanks. Yay! My trees will survive the summer!

In other news, Robert Plant and Frodo have bought houses about eight blocks away from me. There goes the neighborhood.

A Little Poem For Black Night

time is an algorithm that computes your death
your pain is recursive and has an exponential runtime
what cruel seed variable randomly set you on this path?
does god load the dice and cook your numbers, or does meaninglessness play fair?
meanwhile the program counter ratchets on, and not one of us knows how to lay our hands on the clockspeed, nor will our futile stabs at the keyboards break its implacable execution
so lay no bets on the branching of the paths of your fate, for the combinatorics baffle even god’s brain
you’ll find him hiding in a corner, lost in a good sci-fi novel, doing everything he can to forget the chaos he unleashed
and how helpless he is to do a single thing to fix it

Thanks. This should be good. I first saw Halley’s comet on November 17th, 1985 in a small telescope. The comet was like a tiny, indistinct cotton ball. At its maximum in 1986, it was too low on the horizon in the northern hemisphere for good observation. This comet promises to be much better.

Has to be good, at least on the inbound trip. We ran all over the county to find good skies for Halley’s, still got too small a blob to impress the kids. This time I’ve planned and scouted four viewing locations for the grandkids, including Mt. Cheaha, the highest point in the state. At optimum, there could be a day when it rises just before the Sun, sets just after. Planning to use 20X80 binocs, and even their 3.5 degree field will be too narrow. Of course a week of clouds could make it all a no-go.

God does not play dice with universe.- Einstein

You know he was saying that in response to the idea of quantum mechanics and that he was, in fact, wrong in his premise, right?

Not the god bit, but he was using it as a metaphor for the uncertainty and probability contained inside quantum mechanics; he thought it was impossible, but experimentation has shown it to be true.

Always struck me as sad that one of Einstein’s most famous quotes is him being wrong.

I’m in Bakersfield, Ca. so should be clear skies and good seeing. You’ve got some monster binocs and I’m thinking of getting the same although I was thinking 11/80’s but what the hell, 20’s would be better. I already have the tri-pod to mount them. Bakersfield is relatively low light but that unfortunate
light mass known as L.A. might be a problem. I’m hoping for good naked eye and my 7/50’s might be good . If not, I’ll go go for the 80 mm.

Yes I do. It was an exchange with Neils bohr. Einstein didn’t grasp quantum mechanics and it seemed foreign to him. It did not seem intuitive to Einstein in the same way that relativity did not seem intuitive to physicists of his time.

Bought them (Celestron brand) from Amazon, for just over $100. The downside is that their QC is rudimentary, and many ship out of collimation. The up-downside is that they are easy to collimate with a little patience and Internet resources. My backups are a pair of 65 yr old war surplus 7x50s.

Yeah. They use the prism-tilt method, employing 4 tiny setscrews accessible just under the rubber armor. My old B&Ls use eccentric mounts around the objectives. New optic tech makes even the Chinese Celestron much brighter than the old B&L (though decades of minor wear don’t help). You’re right about the tripod—the big glass is virtually unusable without it. They have an integral mount on the stiffening column.

According to the photographer, Penkdix Palme, the frog actually remained like this for approximately 30 minutes.

That’s because he put the poor frog in the refrigerator so he could position it that way. He has a whole series of photos of frogs holding leaves. Look at their toes. They’re kinda stuck together, not positioned naturally spread out. And that leaf doesn’t come from that plant. What, was the frog supposed to have carried it there?

Actually, this is just Sour Grapes Sarah, and she’s really annoyed at John McCain and his campaign team for not letting her scream some variation of “You Foreign Socialist Negro!!1” at Barack Obama.

“You see Sarah, Sen. McCain used to fly A-4 Skyhawks, which are a good bit less forgiving of error than the Piper Cubs you’ve flown. And while you’ve shot wolves from the air, he shot at NVA anti-aircraft sites. which tended to shoot back. She doesn’t fly anything; she can’t do anything; looking good was ever her only asset and even her looks are fading as she ages in spite of the work she has done. Her servant, husband Todd, has a Piper but he can only fly in AK and only himself, not licensed to fly passengers.

These people are way out of their league, but Palin was promoted by Kristol and others for the female vote (totally underestimating our intelligence) and she was pushed on McCain, who only had met her once before he picked her.

Or, we have a UNIT scientist who is a big fan of the 4th Doctor, and is cosplaying him in universe.

That would be weird, yet awesome.

Something screwy here - even a sport pilot or recreational pilot tag can have one passenger.

re: #97 William Barnett-Lewis

I’m guessing he lacks the commercial rating-No passengers for hire. Unless that changed from my student pilot days long ago. He can fly family and friends in whatever he is checked out in. Not that I’m a Todd Palin fan mind you. But the rules are the same for all.

I think the Puma backlash effected the GOP to pick a VP for demographics sake only.
Remember all those woman pissed off about Hillary?
To be fair about Sarah Palin. She was a good athlete and led her High School team
to a State Championship. So she has done something in her life playing point guard.
( A position of leadership ) It’s gone downhill ever since for her as she embraced a simplistic trope in the world of politics.

Hmmm.

There are a shit-ton of airplanes in Alaska and probably the majority of them are flown illegally anyway. I’ll bet that most of the privately-owned bush airplanes in Alaska haven’t had an annual inspection (FAR 91.409) since the Johnson Administration

Is that a bit of a chip on a shoulder I see there?

So here is the real deal right from the FAA.

Coburn…doesn’t he know his party doesn’t do honest?

“The worst thing is being dishonest with your base about what you can accomplish, ginning everybody up and then creating disappointment,” Coburn said. “It’s a terribly dangerous and not successful strategy.”

“You’re going to set an expectation among the conservatives in our party that we can achieve something that we’re not able to achieve,” Coburn continued. “It’s not an achievable strategy. It’s creating the false impression that you can do something when you can’t. And it’s dishonest.”

I just heard something about “going into the 22nd century” and it boggled my mind. Imagine the progress some will have made in education, technology and science, and the rest of the population who simply consumes it.

Maybe even Coburn knows a “revolution by idiots” is really not a good thing for anyone or the country as a whole.

There are some pretty cool seaplanes in history, some of them still flying. On of our better ones was the late-WWII Curtiss Seahawk. There actually is a John McCain III reference in my choice, in that the Seahawk was operated by the Alaska-class BC when they were screening his grandfather’s carriers in 1945.

The Nakajima A6M2-N (Allied codename “Rufe”), a float plane version of the famous Zero. The Wkipedia write up contains an interesting JFK tie-in:

The aircraft was deployed in 1942, referred to as the “Suisen 2” (“Hydro fighter type 2”), and was only utilized in defensive actions in the Aleutians and Solomon Islands operations. Such seaplanes were effective in harassing American PT boats at night, and they were very difficult to detect, even with primitive radar.[citation needed] Close misses killed officers and crews of boats such as PT 105.[citation needed] They could also drop flares to illuminate the PTs which were vulnerable to destroyer gunfire, and depended on cover of darkness. Since the boats left a phosphorescent wake which was visible from the air, they would leave their engines in idle to minimize this. It was primarily for this reason that John F. Kennedy’s PT 109 was caught off guard in idle and rammed by the destroyer Amagiri, unable to maneuver out of the way in time.[citation needed]

I was in the clouds for weeks. To this day when I show people my Jesse Owens signature they marvel. He was a special man..A hero and a treasure

“Pink Panther” jewel thief escapes Swiss jail

(Reuters) - Armed men have broken a member of the so-called Pink Panther gang of jewel thieves out of a Swiss prison, police said on Friday.

Bosnian gang member Poparic Milan escaped the jail in the Swiss canton of Vaud on Thursday night, along with another prisoner, after accomplices in two vehicles forced their way through a gate and fired at prison guards.

Reports are Inspector Jacques Clouseau has been assigned to lead the search.

I’m working on my image library..I snapped this pic of the storm heading overhead to destroy Moore, Ok. last May. It hit 10 miles away bringing death and destruction. The recovery is still going on but be proud of America.. There has been so much help bestowed upon the people of Moore. Money, Clothes, Medical supplies. There is enough bottled water to last a few more years..They are literally trying to find places to store all the supplies here. Our company sent a Semi truck full of supplies and they had to turn back until more warehouse space can be found.

Geeze, that’s an Iraq-style jailbreak right there, or the sort of breakout done by John Dillinger and Clyde Barrow back in the 1930’s. That the gang is from Bosnia is a clue, though. It’s likely some of them have military experience from the civil war that followed the breakup of Yugoslavia.

The truly prolific armed heist gangs since the American Civil War have been either ex-cons or ex-military.

This second exchange is just two people using Twitter to goad each other:

Duelists

In a perpetual personal feud, Duelists generally don’t menace anyone but each other, unless, of course, another Warrior foolishly gets between them. They may not even remember what started the fight, but not they cordially loathe one another and seize every to go at each other. When the other Warriors eventually weary of their endless kvetching the Duelists will be shouted down or Nanny will ban them. Even after getting the heave-ho from one forum, however, it is not unusual for them to seeking each other in other forums to renew their fight.

Yes, but there’d still be a problem even if the nation had recovered more swiftly. When wars end, they leave behind men who are skilled with arms who have a taste for using them. Most such men channel this through lawful avenues, but some turn to crime.
