Sir David Frost Interviews Buzz Aldrin: “Discovering the Moon”

Science • Views: 22,362

This is one of the best interviews ever done with Buzz.

Sir David Frost travels to Los Angeles to meet the astronaut who became the second person to walk on the moon. With the death of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin is the only man alive who can tell us at first-hand about that first moon landing. His story and his reflections, as a man who has helped to change the world we live in, are fascinating and unique.

This includes an extraordinary clip from a 1953 newsreel interview with Buzz in Korea. Then an unknown 2LT and F-86 pilot, he describes his gun camera footage of a kill against a Soviet MiG-15 at virtually point-blank range. The enemy pilot’s ejection is seen very clearly in the film.

Great find!

Great to see those two old guys being more dynamic than most people half their ages. I’ll watch the rest at home, but wanted to note this:

You notice we don’t hear nearly as much about Michael Collins? Maybe it’s because he defaced government property!

This is excellent. I’d like to have another couple of hours of material.

Buzz Aldrin on Facebook. Buzz maintains a really good FB page, always something interesting there.

It is to be expected from “Dr. Rendezvous”.

Well yeah, he didn’t go to the moon.

So he decided to leave his mark on the Mission. Literally in this case.

You lie! We’ve never landed on the moon! : )

I remember watching those launches on TV—it seemed like everything stopped while we did. It was a great time, even Sputnik and Gagarin held everyone’s attention.

Terrific interview—I just can’t imagine the thrill, and the trepidation, of being the first to land on the moon and trusting the complexity of it all.

Pilots do that a lot, just like ground crews do with bombs.

Also, whose gonna do anything about it? Your nearest authority is approximately a 384k kilometres away.

What can they do to stop you?

Trivia: Michael Collins’ daughter Kate Collins is the actress who played Natalie Hunter on “All My Children.”

HBO’s miniseries From the Earth to the Moon is great: great stories, fantastic cast, even 15+ years after it first aired.

And Tony Goldwyn (who played Neil Armstrong in From the Earth to the Moon) currently plays President Grant in Scandal; he also happens to be the grandson of Samuel Goldwyn (the Goldwyn in MGM).

17 years to Mars. Weak. Too slow.

If you want to get really irritated, look at this.

A December 2003 NASA report expressed the belief that a manned mission to Callisto may be possible in the 2040s.[57]

This country needs to cut the military bloat, and transfer it to NASA if we had the money, think what we could do.

re: #17 ProTARDISLiberal

Also, if your really wanted to go Balls to the Wall, you could invite various Nations to help participate monetarily and scientifically within NASA in exchange for seats on various missions.

Canada is a good start. Then pull in Turkey and Mexico. Many members of the EU are unhappy with the Franco-German direction. Pull them in as well.
