Israeli-Palestinian Talks to Start Monday

Deja vu
Middle East • Views: 26,777

On one level this is great news because everyone wants to see a resolution of some kind. But it’s a bit difficult to get very hopeful after the last, oh, two decades or so: US Says Israeli-Palestinian Talks to Start Monday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department says Israeli and Palestinian negotiators will resume long-stalled direct peace talks on Monday.

The department announced Sunday that the two sides had accepted invitations from Secretary of State John Kerry to come to Washington “to formally resume direct final status negotiations.” The department said two days of initial meetings will begin Monday evening.

On the upside, Arafish is long gone. On the downside, we have Hamas.

Very cautiously optimistic.

I’d be a whole lot more hopeful if the Palestinians and Israelis came out with a statement on a resolution of remaining issues - that they already hashed out the key issues in private (back channels) than first saying they’re going to be holding talks in a rather public manner.

None of the prior deals were done in public settings. In fact, the Oslo talks were done in private and only after the declaration was agreed upon was it made public.

The public nature of the talks locks both sides into already known positions with no leeway. PA/PLO/Hamas is never going to relent on right of return or East Jerusalem in public - not when they refuse to make any concessions.

Likewise, Israel’s not going to relinquish control over Jerusalem nor allow right of return or accept a militarized West Bank/Gaza.

These are things that everyone knows on both sides, and yet the only way to move towards peace is to get movement on all those fronts.

The borders can be adjusted - giving and taking territory from the 1948 or 1967 lines and adding or subtracting territory to maintain territorial integrity for Israel and PA controlled territory. Water rights can be agreed upon and so too can mineral rights and even the natural gas rights off the Mediterranean.

Jerusalem’s territorial integrity is a touchstone for both Palestinians and Israelis. Israelis aren’t going to give up East Jerusalem willingly, not when Judaism’s holiest place on the planet is located therein, in the Old City - the Temple Mount and Kotel. They know that when the Jordanians retained control of East Jerusalem that Jews were unable to pray there - and religious freedom is a big deal.

Palestinians likewise want the territory for their own capital - even though that means carving up the city in a way that both Palestinians and Israelis wouldn’t be happy with.

But who exactly is Israel to be negotiating with? Hamas doesn’t recognize Israel’s right to exist, let alone the other terror groups operating in Gaza. Fatah doesn’t speak for all the Palestinians, so any talks may have limited utility.

Still, talks do have utility. It gets the sides to build relationships that haven’t been worked upon since the Hamas takeover of Gaza, and there might be some movement on other issues.

Nothing will come of it. There are too many people on all sides of the equation who do not want peace.

They want victory, which is a different thing altogether.

Hamas may not want to get Israel’s wrath at the moment since they’re trying to deal with the situation in Egypt. But that doesn’t mean that Islamic Jihad or PRCs or other terror groups and splinter groups aren’t going to try something. Last week there were a couple of launches, but those appeared to be done without Hamas’ approval.

Conservative Christian group blames falling SAT scores on lack of school prayer

The American Family Association of Kentucky believes school prayer has something to do with SAT scores and the AIDS epidemic.

Right Wing Watch reported that the conservative Christian group recently launched a petition calling for prayer in public schools.

The petition noted that Mississippi and Florida had enacted laws that allowed public prayers to be given at school assemblies, graduation ceremonies and sporting events.

“Prayer was in our schools for over 200 years before the anti-God forces took it out in 1962,” the petition stated. “After prayer was removed from our schools, teen pregnancy went up 500%, STD’s went up 226%, violent crime went up 500% and SAT scores went down for 18 years in a row, opening the door for the AIDS epidemic and the drug culture.”

True, but nearly every president and SecState over the last 40 years has tried to score a big victory by brokering middle east peace deals. So Kerry’s not really any different.

It’s the classic logical fallacy of assuming that A caused B merely because A happened before B. But what else would you expect from religious fanatics who feel that they’re not truly free unless they can interject religion into every context, public or private.

re: #19 palomino

Well, he is different from Bush.

The whole Evangelical Christian thing that he promoted meant that the Palestinians had no chance in hell.

To be honest, they still don’t. They will likely be asked to take a map that looks like this (Essentially Zones A & B), with no water rights, and no rights in regards to sites in Jerusalem. Not to mention no right of free travel between those little, unsustainable pockets. I’ll start believing that something will happen when Israel shows give on the settlements, and negotiates for Jerusalem. Jerusalem is important for Muslims and Christians too.

And yes, I slightly side with the Palestinians. Though I want a third party to sweep out the corrupt Fatah and the evil Hamas/Muslim Brotherhood.

23 Archangelus  Sun, Jul 28, 2013 2:33:15pm

I really wish I could be optimistic about this. However, neither side can really advance this much.
On the Palestinian side, Hamas is a main obstacle to negotiations since violently seizing the Gaza Strip in 2007 (which included the slaughtering of quite a few Fatah personnel at the time). They do not recognize Israel in general and the negotiations in particular, which seriously harms the strength of Abass’s position.
On the Israeli side, the Netanyahu administration has issues of its own (internal-political and social) in bringing forward the results of any negotiations to the people. Netanyahu has abysmal support (he won the last elections because of the craptacular Israeli political/election system - which makes ours look like a gift from the almighty straight from Mount Sinai).
Worst of all, in my opinion, is that after all these years, most Israeli citizens are jaded when it comes to the notion of peace - even those that were major supporters of the Oslo accords. Abass is barely tolerated by the peace-supporting Israeli left, his actions from the past few years have tainted him in many eyes, and far too many believe that even if the Palestinian people want peace, their leadership - which has remained mostly the same since Arafat’s days - simply cannot be trusted.
All in all, not a good recipe for success…

Interesting. I can’t remember my exact SAT composite score (from back in the winter of 1969-70), something like 1,400, only that I did better in the math part than the verbal part, which I found stunning because I had a horrible case of the flu when taking my SAT. I’d taken the ACT earlier and scored a 31 or 32 composite on that because my math portion was something like 17-18, which dragged down everything else. Guess it was that prayer thing that doomed me in math, being educated in a small town public school and all…

The photo in question is Tom Franklin’s iconic photo showing 3 FDNY raising a flag at the WFC with the ruins of the WTC all around them. The curator didn’t think that this was an appropriate photo, but was overruled and it was decided that three photos showing the raising of that flag from three different positions be included.

I don’t agree with the curator’s notion about the Franklin photo. There’s a reason it was iconic and should be included. It captured so much of what people were thinking - rallying around the flag, the spirit of the FDNY and other rescuers who would then spend months just trying to find remains of their brothers (343 FDNY were killed) along with the rest of the 2800 killed at the WTC alone.

Far more outrageous is the fact that the WTC museum didn’t consider what might happen if the area flooded (which it did during Sandy - causing millions in damage and would have been even more devastating had the museum been closer to completion). Flood prevention/mitigation wasn’t part of the plan despite being below grade and in a flood zone.

That’s a possibility among the Israelis as well; Rabin was assassinated by someone who thought him a traitor to Israel by even considering giving up any Israeli rights to Judea/Samaria (the West Bank).

A good point, but there’s a vast difference in that the murderous vile of excrement known as Yigal Amir and his handful of despicable supporters were members of a very small lunatic fringe. This is nowhere near the case with the Palestinian leadership, where it’s a case of far greater numbers within the Gaza Strip. The West Bank is a different story - that region has benefited far more from the Oslo accords, and as such are more pragmatic and know that total failure means they’ll suffer much more as a direct consequence of having more to lose.

I was there at the rally in November ‘95 by the way, during the first time I was in Israel for a few years with family (youth organizations in Israel like the Israeli Scouts or Hanoar Haoved were historically left-leaning in origin, all supported the peace efforts and organized groups to attend peace rallies). Like quite a few others there, I was near Rabin when he was shot.

At the time, the notion of such an assassination was literally unthinkable on all sides, in a mix of ignorance and naiveté, and everyone was genuinely, utterly shocked that such a thing could even be thought of, let alone happen. I still remember not being able to wrap my mind around such a level of naiveté - perhaps on account of being American and knowing about JFK and more world history stuff even as a youth..

NBC: No plans to discuss Russian anti-LGBT laws during Olympic coverage

The head of NBC Sports has responded to calls for the TV network to put a spotlight on Russia’s draconian new anti-gay laws in its coverage of the upcoming Winter Olympics, saying there would be reporting of the issue but only if it should emerge as a problem during the games.

Mark Lazarus, chairman of the NBC Sports division, told an audience at the Television Critics Association in Beverly Hills that the issue of Russia’s clampdown on gay men and lesbians had already been dealt with by the International Olympic Committee. “The IOC has addressed it with the Russian government and has assured athletes, fans and media that there won’t be any issues,” he said, adding that should the new laws impacted any part of the Winter Olympics “we will make sure we are acknowledging it and recognising it”.

Oh seriously just fuck these people. If you can’t live on a couple of million dollars, comfortably, for many years, you have problems money can’t fix. If I had just one million dollars(and trust me, I have thought about this a lot- even budgeted it on paper), I could be out of debt, put both of my kids into trade schools, get my son some extra help with his autism, put some money aside for my grandkids, travel a little with my husband(just to see a few National Parks before I die), and STILL have money left over, AND be freaking HAPPY about it. Oh boo hoo, you don’t have 5 million dollars, just one or two million… STFU.

I was listening to the news this morning on the car radio. EIGHTY percent of adults in America will struggle with poverty and unemployment in their lifetimes. Many of those will never recover, and many of them find themselves in that position because of an accident or illness that even those with insurance find they aren’t covered for. I’d like to see some time and energy and freaking studies done on that. There’s really no excuse for AMERICA! FUCK YEAH! to have this happening. It’s bullshit.

Well, if you ever wanted to fire direct questions at someone in that demographic — shoot. I’m worth about about 1.7 M and do not feel that I’m “rich” in the sense of the BMW and Benz crowd.

Too much middle class upbringing, not feeling I need to own or acquire status items, and knowing that a catastrophic event could strip it all away. Flip side, I am relatively de-stressed since I know I can walk away from my job if I had to. I have a financial nest egg set aside for retirement. I have some ability to travel and go do things. AND, I do have a chance to handle or ride out events that would leave other totally screwed.

Sidenote: I don’t know you how many of you are familiar with “Can Con” rules, but basically Canadian radio stations are required by law to play a percentage of Canadian artists in their programming.

This is why, growing up I got subjected to way more Barenaked Ladies, Celine Dion and yes, Nickelback than any human being ever should. I suppose I should be happy I got out of there before Justin Bieber made it big.

Having said that, I still quite like BnL.

The governor of the Sochi region has a history hiring Cossacks to do his dirty work. Here’s an excerpt from a NYT article.

MOSCOW — The governor of Russia’s Krasnodar region, which will host the Winter Olympics in 2014, has enlisted the area’s Cossacks as an auxiliary police force, urging them to prevent darker-skinned Muslims from the North Caucasus from moving there.

Aleksandr Tkachev says Russians are “uncomfortable” with migrants.

In a speech to law enforcement officers on Thursday, he announced that as of September, 1,000 Cossacks would be paid from the budget to maintain public order. In the speech, he said the Cossacks — whose paramilitary forces served the czars — could take measures beyond what the police were allowed.

“What you can’t do, the Cossacks can,” he told the officers in the speech, which was widely circulated on the Internet on Friday. “We have no other way — we shall stamp it out, instill order; we shall demand paperwork and enforce migration policies.”

Yes. It’s pretty easy to lose sight of how one’s problems are pretty minor in comparison to what others are going through. A lot of that I think links to who you interact with on a daily basis. Very easy for that to be a bubble that is fairly detached from reality, or at a minimum skews your view.

And since I crunched the numbers once I think the 1->5 million job for feeling “rich” is that if you went over to trying to live primarily off investment income the higher number is where you start having 80-100K of income per year from the investments. So you can live at an upper middle income level without having to actually work. Though, as you said, you could get quite far and live quite well off the lower number.

And I am also very aware that I have been getting by quite well while other Lizards are struggling with employment issues, familiy issues, health, etc. But I also know better than to continually whine about my petty problems in the face of that.

re: #59 Eclectic Cyborg

Kind of makes sense to me.

They don’t want to be thought of as “rich”, rather as “wealthy” or “successful”

What gets me are the fucking comments. They’re whinging about taxes, SS deductions, etc. yet are living in the most prosperous country, at least economically, in the world. For some people, no matter how much “wealth” they have, it will never be enough. Yet they expect those less fortunate (who they don’t think “work hard enough”) to get off our asses and onto the wheel.

They brag about their “investment accts” and opine about $1M not covering retirement, but none of them ever say they can cut back on anything, including downsizing the house they live in by themselves, or buying quality “stuff” that will last, traveling less, or using up fewer natural resources. They talk about “wealth” and not income, like most people do who live from paycheck to paycheck and are strapped into debt.

I could live on my small SS check even though rent takes up half my income because there are areas I can cut back on, even if it means I will do without some things—but I will always have the basic necessities due to my own thrifty ways, and besides, I’m getting older and more tired, esp of this kind of bullshit. I’m more concerned about the tens of millions of young people who will never get some of the chances I got (small as they were) because the wealth gap in this country is widening more and more every year, or those thrown out of work because of the decisions of business owners, both small and corporate. If those who complain about people not “pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps” actually looked at themselves honestly, they would be able to list exactly how many people in their own lives have helped to accomplish what they have. Now, in addition to the phenomenon of that widening gap, we have to worry about the safety net being ripped to shreds to satisfy the greed of those at the top and the politicians who serve them, not us.

After the wealthiest have sucked us mere peons dry, they’ll go after the mere millionaires, too, the ones who really admire and try to emulate the most wealthy. I doubt if those millionaires will be able to understand why, though.

First I would upding that again if I could. And second I WISH we had “only” regained 45% of what we lost in 2007/08. We went from almost 6 figures in income to less than half that today. My husband has been laid off three times in 5 yrs, each job is for a little less than the one before it. I’m 53 and have been a full time mom for 20 yrs. Before that I spent my time in retail management, working my way up from stock clerk. I also worked in two factories, one union, one not. And I spent some time as a preschool teacher. I had a retail sales job for a pet food company about 2 yrs ago, it took me 18 MONTHS to land that job and I had to jump through hoops to get it. For a weekends only, 12 hours per weekend, 11 dollars an hour job with no hope of advancement. I interviewed with an asshole half my age who asked me 3 hours worth of stupid “what if” questions. I found out later he didn’t do that to other people in my territory, all of whom were younger and less experienced. Oh sure, it’s illegal to discriminate based on age, but I know my applications get shitcanned as soon as someone sees I was born in 1960.

I’m scared to death for my kids, neither one of them will do better than we were(and we were going to be ok, and then we paid for someone else’s shitty corporate level choices) and I feel horrid that we can’t help them. I try real hard not to get sad about it, but it’s hard sometimes. I’m just glad we were smart with our money while we had it for the most part, we own a car and a motorcycle outright, the other car is almost paid for and we have a little less than 8K in credit card debt. We don’t live beyond our means, we’ve cut out a lot in the last 5 yrs and we bargain shop like there’s no tommorrow. But if something happens to my husband, we’re screwed.

For those who wish to argue that blame can be directed at all sides, please indicate where Israel teaches their children to hate and routinely glorifies those that target and murder innocent civilians - including babies (yes, there are pockets of idiots in Israel who have done that - Dr. Goldstein admirers - are a clear example.)

This is not a battle over territory - it’s one of ideology - plain and simple. Peace came to northern Ireland when the terrorists finally asked themselves “what have we become.”
