Tech Note: LGF Pages Bookmarklet Updated

New auto-embedding features
LGF • Views: 28,385

There’s a new version of the LGF Pages posting bookmarklet tonight, with better support for automatically embedding video and SoundCloud audio from most websites — making it incredibly simple to add video and audio to your posts.

To install the new version in your browser, right-click on your existing bookmarklet (if you’ve already installed it) and choose “Delete,” then drag that big button at the top of the right column labeled “Create a Page” to your bookmarks bar in its place. You’ll notice when you open the new bookmarklet that it’s now at version 1.0.5.

Auto-embedding works by scanning the current page for embedded media and grabbing the first thing it finds; the LGF Pages window will open with the video embed code automatically filled in if the page contains media in one of these formats:

YouTube
Vimeo
Comedy Central
SoundCloud
Scribd

In addition, the latest version of the bookmarklet has special code to find embedded content at NPR (MP3 audio), Right Wing Watch and Media Matters.

Also check out the latest beta version of the Media Library - it’s extremely cool to have a collection of all the videos and audio posted at LGF, all of it playable.

Why the hell didn’t I go into Politics? What was I thinking?
Guess I thought politics involved serving ’ We the People ’ and helping citizens for a rather moderate ( Read cheap ) Salary.
How could I don a heavy coat filled with such weight upon my shoulders? The songs of millions crying out for justice? The weight of the blood of hundreds of thousands shed into the ground to buy us this the American dream of Justice, Freedom and equality for every fucking single American. To proclaim the Joy of America to the world with my voice and invite others to join us in this miracle of Man. A Man that shows mercy and help to those souls traveling to that dream called America.
That candle of the Hill..Those thousands points of light..Come all you souls burdened by life..Come to us and let us be a beam of light and hope to the world together..
Why didn’t go into politics? We are left with people that Tweet their junk, Pick up gays at airports in stalls, Line their pockets of cash, Lie and spend like drunken sailors, Attack Woman in order to legislate their bodies and lives, Bring the wounds of race to the front line.
I, For one, Am deeply hurt and disappointed..
Shit..
So I need to take Winston out for his fun walk and give him a bath and I think I’ll pour a tall drink and stare out the window of the world called the Internet tonight and wonder where we all went wrong..

re: #7 Charles Johnson

I’ve been exploring lesser known recordings of well known artists. A lot of good work just gathers dust.

Also, on the classical music front, I also wonder how any of them make a living at it. For example, with the CSO putting their full broadcasts online for free, every week now, even contemporary classical artists are in essence giving out their work.

And yet, we muddle through somehow-and the general course of humanity seems to be upward.
To me the depressing cupidity and self interest merely mark us as what we are-members of the animal kingdom. I’m not sure that you presence-or mine-in politics would fix a lot.

Yeah, I have a fix for that on the way. If it sees an image when you open the bookmarklet, it will have a checkbox and a link that pops up the image so you can see what it looks like, and uncheck it if it isn’t right.

33 freetoken  Mon, Jul 29, 2013 5:32:08pm

For example, CSO put up their latest on Soundcloud today:

SoundCloud

Moncayo - Huapango
Beethoven - Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 36
Dvořák - Cello Concerto in B Minor, Op. 104
Yo-Yo Ma, cello
Originally recorded at concerts on May 5 and 6, 2012

Bloch - Schelomo
Yo-Yo Ma, cello
Miguel Harth-Bedoya, conductor
Originally recorded at concerts on April 12, 13, 17, 2007

Yo-Yo Ma is the best known cellist of our time and certainly doesn’t lack for work, but here’s another example of where one can get first rate music for, basically, free.

Now the CSO exists courtesy of lots of donations, but aren’t we talking here of returning to the old days of patricians required for musicians to survive?

Dvorak’s cello concerto section starts around 48:30 and is the recommended part of the broadcast.

Guthrie Govan’s unbelievably accurate impressions of the best guitar players in history.

Youtube Video

The Winter 2005 edition of UK Guitar mag ‘Guitar Techniques’ revealed winners of a readers poll, identifying the best players (in the humble opinions of many GT readers) at certain techniques. Master Guthrie then wrote and recorded a (rather superb) piece of music in the style of all of the consequent winners. To answer the inevitable questions, the results were as follows;

Best chord voicings - Eric Johnson
Best use of capo - James Taylor
Best strumming - Pete Townsend
Best use of E-Bow or sustaining device - The Edge
Best vibrato - BB King
Best string bending - David Gilmour
Best finger picking - Mark Knopfler
Best hybrid picking - Albert Lee
Best tapping - Eddie Van Halen
Best palm muting - Al Di Meola
Best sweep picking - Yngwie
Best speed, Best alternate picking, Best string skipping - Paul Gilbert
Best pinched harmonics - Zakk Wylde
Best use of an effect - Tom Morello
Best legato - Satch
Best fretting hand reach, Best use of harmonics - Steve Vai
Best use of slide - Sonny Landreth
Best feel - Jeff Beck
Best timing - John Scofield
Most creative/experimental player, Best use of whammy bar, Overall winner - Jimi.

This vid is more about showcasing the piece of music and versatility of Mr G rather than prompting a debate over who is better than who (you can’t please everyone with such polls), but if you wish to tear lumps out of each other then be my guest :)

Enjoy.

More from that Delta crawling lawsuit.

“I was forced by Delta Airlines, just days before having a spinal fusion surgery, I was forced to crawl from my chair, through the cabin of the plane, down a flight of stairs with no backing or sides and across the tarmac to get to my wheelchair,”

Hmm. So they’ll actually allow people to crawl, walk, or whatever across the tarmac and his wheelchair was waiting for him?

A lot of the little puddle jumpers still deplane directly to the tarmac. Back when I traveled a lot for work especially when flying into smaller regional airports I had to do it all the time. Still doesn’t explain why they couldn’t get this guy off the plane with some dignity.

If it’s a regional jet or turboprop, those can’t usually be serviced by skyways and you you have to go out on the tarmac to get on board or off.

re: #62 thedopefishlives

In fact, there was one flight where we were literally shepherded by a squadron of airline/airport personnel on a quarter-mile walk around the outside of the airport to reach our plane. There were about 4 of them sitting around parked in the destination area, and a staffer directed us to the plane which was ours.

The reviews for the Lindsey Lohan movie, ’ The Canyon ” are in.
The amazing thing you should know about the movie is the 7200 word review by the NY Times about how bad she acted..I mean pathetic..Didn’t spend much time talking about the movie..Just LILO.
The movie just sucks..And it sucks so bad that some wondered if it was so bad it may qualify for one of those cult movies that were so bad that you’d go see it at a midnight showing with your friends blasted out of your mind.. But No..It’s so bad it doesn’t qualify for horribly aweful as a cult film..So there is that.
By Contract she had todo a 4 way sex scene..With a Porn Star..Which, you know offered a possible highlight. The reviews said it sucked also (pun intended) It was a lame scene say the pundits..But read the backround about it in the Times article..I’m not sure if it was the funniest or dummest thing I’ve ever read..I think at the end of hours of shit on the set the director just took off his clothes and begged her to do the scene..
The back round reading is so much better than the movie..She is a nut case.
Can you imagine me as the director?

It’s not even so bad it’s good
Cult films can be terrible, yet weirdly compelling. “Canyons” doesn’t even seem destined for midnight showings to drunk college students. “Far from the renegade, boundary-pushing, sexually explicit sensation that its makers have been suggesting, ‘The Canyons’ is a lame, one-dimensional and ultimately dreary look at peripheral Hollywood types not worth anyone’s time either onscreen or in real life,” says McCarthy.

Yep, she’s a Marine: Goldie Taylor.

Taylor was born in University City, Missouri, but raised in East St. Louis, Illinois. Her father was murdered on November 5, 1973 when she was 5, leaving her mother Mary to raise her and her siblings alone. She attended public schools in the metro St. Louis area before moving to Atlanta and graduating from Cross Keys High School in 1986. Taylor was an active duty US Marine trained in Public Affairs Broadcasting at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. She received an honorable discharge on medical grounds. Taylor then gained admission to Emory University in Atlanta where she studied Political Science and International Affairs.

OK, after reviewing some of his videos on Facebook he’s for real. Starts here.

This article has some more detail on the incident. Apparently his original flight had been cancelled due to weather and he had to be booked on a different flight. He was flying into Nantucket so definitely a little tiny airport. The one thing I can’t seem to find is what type of plane it was. The Aircraft Carrier Access Act does not require airlines to provide boarding assistance on flights with fewer than 19 seats so that’s really the only legal defense I could see. Not sure what their moral defense is though.

Tennessee Tea Party Activists Demand That School Textbooks Omit Slavery References

…For the last few years, this group of Tea Party activists has been pressing state law makers in Tennessee to change the rules that govern state schools. Here is one of the guidelines the group hopes will be implemented into law:

“No portrayal of minority experience in the history which actually occurred shall obscure the experience or contributions of the Founding Fathers, or the majority of citizens, including those who reached positions of leadership.”

114 jaunte  Mon, Jul 29, 2013 7:39:42pm
Hal Rounds, a Fayette County, Tennessee attorney and lead spokesman for the Tea Party group pursuing the history curriculum whitewash:

“There’s been an awful lot of made-up criticism about [our country’s history]. For instance, the founders [of America] intruding on the Indians or having slaves or being hypocrites in one way or another. The thing we need to focus on about the founders is that, given the social structure of their time, they were revolutionaries who brought liberty into a world where it hadn’t existed, to everybody — not all equally instantly — and it was their progress that we need to look at.”

Hello Lizards!

Ran around San Diego for part of the day (USS Midway, lunch at a place along the waterfront, then over to Coronado Island for a chunk of the afternoon.) Then dealt with *traffic* getting north and eventually got to hotel near San Bernardino after a few hours in the car.

Soaked in the pool, took a shower, found some poor Mex food at a hole in the wall place (you sometimes find real good food that way though.)

Headed north towards Bishop tomorrow to begin the mountain/desert part of the California tour.

The USS Midway was pretty spectacular in terms of ship and aircraft stuff. Hopefully some of the snaps will come out well. And from her flight deck you could see two Nimitz-class carriers moored over at Coronado. (USS Carl Vinson and the USS Ronald Reagan.)

I just watched (well, with some rewinds because I kept being interrupted) a mesmerizing film, “Happy People: A Year in the Taiga”. I’ve read a number of reviews of this movie, some cynical, some pandering, but my initial reaction at the opening scenes was, Damn, they have to be tough just to stand the cold! The village of Bakhta, with around 300 people, a few of those native Kets, is where it starts, but the real action is in the taiga where several men live and work for a large part of the year. The footage for this movie was taken from 4 hours of filming for a Russian TV series.

The characters, esp the introspective woodsman, craftsman, and seasoned trapper, Gennardy, probably in his late 50s, who arrived there at age 20 in 1970, are fascinating and a pleasure to get to know, even if superficially, as is their relationships with their dogs who they consider valuable working companions. One observation I’d like to make, is that in spite of everything we have outside of the rather primitive and remote life of this village, poverty is relative, even if Werner Hartzog, in his inimitable style, puts a sheen of romanticism into his dialogue. Still, I highly recommend it because I think you can take something valuable from it—I did.

In fact, I was so taken with it, I’ll probably watch it again. And maybe again. musicboxfilms.com

Tennessee Tea Party Activists Demand That School Textbooks Omit Slavery References

So in other words, the Tennessee Tea Party wants the curriculum to ignore a huge part of our history from the arrival of the first slaves to Jamestown in 1619 to the abolition of slavery in 1865 and later sharecropping in the years after. So no TP, we’re not going to gloss that over just because you’re uncomfortable with the founders not being painted as secular saints because of their very real but also human flaws on issues like slavery.

Former Republican Indiana school chief made sure GOP donor’s charter school got top marks

A former Indiana school superintendent frantically overhauled a school grading system to ensure a Republican donor’s charter school received an “A” grade.

Emails obtained by the Associated Press showed that former Indiana schools chief Tony Bennett, a Republican, insisted that a new school grading system must give the Christel House Academy charter school top marks.

The Indianapolis charter school was run by Christel DeHaan, who has given more than $2.8 million to Republicans since 1998, according to the Associated Press. Bennett had received $130,000 from DeHaan.

Bennett had promised to hold “failing” schools accountable by implementing the new statewide A-F school grading system. The new grading system had initially given Christel House a “C” grade, because of the school’s poor test scores in algebra.

“This will be a HUGE problem for us,” Bennett wrote in a Sept. 12, 2012 email.

At the urging of Bennett, the grading system was quickly altered so that Christel House ended up with an “A” grade.

Like how John Boehner ran a Republican Congressman out on the House back in 2011 on a rail when he caught the man sending harassing messages. By contrast, Speakers in days past too often let such people stay till their scandal could no longer be avoided (I’m not referring to Nancy Pelosi here, since she’s just as firm on this point as Boehner). But Boehner threw the bum out so fast it didn’t even become a scandal.

Would that all party leaders took sexual harassment as seriously as our most recent House Speakers. Politics would be more boring, but a lot cleaner.

BTW, it’s worth noting that Florida’s idea of chemical plant regulation is only marginally better than the one here in Texas.

Here in Texas, there’s not even a fire code, much less a state regulatory body to oversee or investigate fertilizer plants. In Florida, the regulatory board that DOES exist is full of industry lobbyists instead of experienced regulators.

John Oliver lampoons Anthony Weiner’s ‘everlasting gobstopper of embarrassing revelations’

In his ongoing coverage of Anthony Weiner’s bulging junk, The Daily Show host John Oliver on Monday gleefully reported that the New York mayoral candidate was slipping in the polls. Oliver noted that Weiner’s campaign manager had resigned, probably due to the fact he got tired of “sucking on the everlasting gobstopper of embarrassing revelations.” The latest revelation? Weiner spent $45,000 in campaign donations to hire experts to investigate the alleged hacking of his Twitter account, which he later admitted never happened.

Can I just point out that Nixon and Reagan were Californians (them winning California in big landslide years maybe doesn’t mean much, R’s took like 48 states in their elections, but…) Ford won California, even while losing nationally. GHWB won California.

It was a swing state until Pete Wilson went on his anti-Hispanic rampage… which is exactly the template the national party has since adopted.

First it was Snowden, the movie - now you can play the video game

Fleeing through the dark corridors of NSA Headquarters, snatching up green USB sticks while a secret agent chases your heels…This is the gripping story of Edward Snowden - or at least the video game version.

Currently available as a free download for both Android phones and computers, Snowden Run 3D is a satirical game produced by Belgian computer scientist Michele Rocco Smeets. Originally intended as an entry for Ludum Dare, a contest that challenges creators to code a playable game within 48 hours, Snowden Run 3D was developed by Smeets in less than 30 hours. It is an “endless runner” game, with a constantly moving playable character, and is similar to popular mobile favourites Temple Run and Subway Surfers. It was originally released to the public on 19 July.

In the game, players control Snowden as he runs through three different locations: the NSA Headquarters, Hong Kong and Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport. Snowden can be controlled with finger swipes (or mouse movements, in the computer version) to jump and slide his way through various obstacles in the environment, picking up USB sticks and laptops along the way. If Snowden collides with any of the obstacles, he runs the risk of losing the game and being sent to Guantanamo Bay by an NSA agent constantly running a few steps behind him.

There are also a few power-up items in the game, including an option to call Russian President Vladmir Putin - referred to affectionately as “Uncle Putin”. If the player calls Putin, a USSR hydrogen bomb will temporarily clear all obstacles from Snowden’s path.

So, Rand Paul is jousting with Gov. Christie over Christie’s decision to demand that the feds pay their fair share in the reconstruction of NJ after Sandy.

Paul thinks NJ should bootstap itself and that they don’t need the money.

Let’s just ignore that NJ gives far money to the feds than gets back.

Kentucky?

They take in far more in federal aid than they give.

(Red States benefit more from federal funds than Blue States)

Rand Paul’s into getting the benefits, but wants no one else to share in them, even when it’s tied to disaster aid. He’s got his. Screw New Jersey.

Selfish hypocrisy doesn’t even begin to cover this - and it’s a view shared by the TP, which is strongest in the red states - all of which get more in federal funds than they give.

Gov. McDonnell has a perfectly logical explanation for how the head of a company that’s under federal investigation had a party thrown in his honor at the governor’s mansion: It’s all his wife’s fault!

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) said in a live radio interview on Tuesday that his wife’s office organized a 2011 event at the executive mansion for a company run by a donor whose relationship with McDonnell is now under investigation.

“There’s sort of a misconception,” McDonnell said in the WTOP interview. “I was not in a role of promoting Star Scientific. There was an event held at the mansion in 2011. The event was arranged by the First Lady’s office.”

Star Scientific, a dietary supplements maker which is under federal investigation, is run by Jonnie Williams, the donor whose gifts and loans to McDonnell and his family have been in the headlines for weeks. McDonnell’s relationship with Williams is itself reportedly the subject of state and federal probes, and the governor and his family have recently returned over $120,000 in loans to Williams. McDonnell said Tuesday he plans to return thousands of dollars worth of gifts as well.

Nanny Bloomberg loses in court…

Appeals court upholds ruling slapping down Mayor Bloomberg’s soda ban

An appeals court today dealt another blow to Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed soda ban, calling the controversial regulation “invalid” because it violates “the principle of separation of powers.”

In March, a lower court judge first rejected the ban that stropped city restaurants, delis and other businesses from selling large sugary drinks, just a day before it was scheduled to launch.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Milton Tingling slapped Bloomberg and his Board of Health for overstepping their bounds.

The four-judge Appellate Division panel agreed today.

“Like Supreme Court, we conclude that in promulgating this regulation the Board of Health failed to act within the bounds of its lawfully delegated authority,” they wrote in the unanimous ruling.

Abbas: ‘Not a single Israeli’ in future Palestinian state

CAIRO - Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas laid out his vision on Monday for the final status of Israeli-Palestinian relations ahead of peace talks due to resume in Washington for the first time in nearly three years.

Abbas said that no Israeli settlers or border forces could remain in a future Palestinian state and that Palestinians deem illegal all Jewish settlement building within the land occupied in the 1967 Six Days War.

…”In a final resolution, we would not see the presence of a single Israeli - civilian or soldier - on our lands,” Abbas said in a briefing to mostly Egyptian journalists.

Latest Weiner news…

Weiner sext pal in raunchy tell-all interview: Phone sex ‘15 times a day wouldn’t be enough’ for obsessed pol

…In a raunchy tell-all interview with Howard Stern, Anthony Weiner’s former virtual gal pal Sydney Leathers says the peter-tweeting poll used to call her up to five times a day - and almost every day - to have phone sex. And that still wasn’t enough!

“He could have 12 girls talking to him, beating off 15 times a day and that wouldn’t be enough,” Leathers said. “You would think his d—k would hurt by the end of it.”

…Leathers recalled Weiner as the wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am type, saying he would make small talk but then abruptly told her to take off her clothes off.

Weiner really got off when Leathers stroked his ego.

“He was just this needy little bitch. He needs his ego stroked, that’s the problem,” she said.

“He had a lot of fantasies - he loved me in heels, pictures in heels. He was really into talking about shower sex to the point where he would have dreams about it and call me the next morning to tell me about it.”

Afterward, he would awkwardly thank her.

His political hopes of a comeback and marriage cant last much longer.

You can respect Manning’s actions and still think they were illegal. Personally, I reserve my hatred for the sorry sacks of shit who exploit men like Manning and Snowden to promote themselves, Glenn.

Fixed that for you.

Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.

What kind of a pathetically insecure person sees a sitcom where the dad is portrayed as a doofus and thinks, “that’s it, society won’t respect me, I’m never becoming a father!”? Anyone who thinks that way probably SHOULDN’T become a father just because he lacks the maturity and emotional stamina to deal with the challenge of raising kids.

Who are these losers who Inez keeps meeting? She needs to start running in different social circles.

Inez, I invite you to look into the reasons why no-fault divorce ever became a reality and why Ronnie Reagan, the very model of all that is good in conservatism, signed the bill that made California the first state to adopt no-fault divorce.

So the emoprog claims of a kangaroo court are squashed by the not guilty aid to enemy verdict but he still gets massive punishment for stealing 750,000+ documents?

Ok, I’ll take that.

Yeah, let’s force couples to stay together, or at least stay married. What could go wrong? Less government.

While you are on active duty, the UCMJ is what the have to abide by. No right to free speech in the UCMJ.

Those losers are “her” co-workers at Heritage.

This is why I’m convinced she’s not real. A real woman in 2013 wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss child support if she gets divorced. He helped make the kid, he should help pay to raise it. And most men will agree, IMO.

No doubt Manning knew this. That’s why he passed on info he stole to Wikileaks.

Inez has no kids—which is precisely why she can have contempt for child support and soothe all those male egos she works with.

Inez Feltscher has a BA in Philosophy from University of California and is currently attending the University of Virginia School of Law. She has been involved with education issues for more than two years, and her work has been published by organizations such as The Heritage Foundation, Center for Education Reform and National School Choice Week

inez barely has any more experience with the real world than a fetus

i don’t want to hear anything from people like this until they’ve spent two years supporting themselves on a restaurant job

No kidding. Really what man looks at say Homer Simpson and thinks “Man society’s putting me down!.” And conservatives accuse liberals of being humorless.
