Recall launched as Filner seeks legal fees
The drive to recall Mayor Bob Filner began in earnest Monday as the beleaguered politician made a formal request for taxpayers to pick up the tab for his legal fees stemming from a sexual harassment lawsuit.
There doesn’t appear to be any end in sight to the daily developments on the Filner front even though the mayor has tried to keep a low profile since announcing Friday that he’ll undergo intensive therapy rather than resign in response allegations of unwanted sexual advances by seven women.
While the recall movement was expected to take off this week, it surprised many that Filner would ask taxpayers to foot the bill for his legal troubles.

The House GOP quietly blocked funding for ACORN last week, even though the anti-poverty organization has long since been both defunded and disbanded.
The legislative assault on ACORN, which shut down in 2010, was included in a Department of Defense appropriations bill that cleared the House on Thursday…Section 8097 of the bill reads, “None of the funds made available under this Act may be distributed to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) or its subsidiaries.”

Fox Business host: Feeding hungry seniors is ‘called buying votes’
Fox Business host Stuart Varney on Tuesday accused the AARP of signing hungry seniors up for food stamps as part of a “buy-the-vote campaign” to benefit President Barack Obama.
[…]
“What about pride?” Fox & Friends host Brian Kilmeade wondered. “What about pride in not getting food stamps because they don’t need them?”“The AARP, huge supports of President Obama, politically and financially, big supporters of Obamacare,” Varney explained. “And now they’re out there signing people up for food stamps. This is part of the buy-the-vote campaign. They’re really shifting America, changing what America really is.”
“But if they’re hungry they should get it, and if they qualify,” co-host Steve Doocy noted.
“Yeah, should they?” Varney grimaced. “Should people be going out there, ‘Give it to me! Give it to me now!’ You want that? Is that America?”
“They are acting on behalf of the president and, I repeat, I think it’s buying votes with taxpayer money,” he insisted.
[…]
When Doocy is the only one in the room making sense, then something is really, really FU.
And, Varney seems to ignore that all the other billions of dollars Congress spends somehow isn’t “buying votes”.
Clue for the clueless: Everything Congress does is to “buy” a vote from someone. That’s the way it’s supposed to work.

Scientific American has always relied on the word “scientific” in their title to give them some credibility, even if their articles sometimes are more fluff than substance.
Recently though they are more and more sounding like HuffPo writers with more emphasis on creating story dynamics than in, well, actual science.
In the latest confused piece, this one on climate change, a senior editor writes:
The IPCC stands by its equation of 450 ppm = 2 degrees C, based on “climate sensitivity” data—how much temperatures will rise given an ongoing increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide.
No, just no. That’s not how it works, that’s not what is meant.
The “equation” purported is not a real thing.
Approximately 2C higher equilibrium temperature for the surface of the Earth (averaged across the whole surface, over a long period) was the most likely estimate, made from a series of projections which are best described as a distribution.
Indeed, even more recent estimates of surface warming, though giving slightly lower temperatures than the 2007 IPCC summarized estimate, for any given amount of CO2 emitted, still have temperature distributions that in large part overlap the temperature distributions of the older estimates. The difference is not very significant between older and new estimates.
Scientific American has dumbed down the real ideas - of estimations being probability distributions (gleaned from multiple runs of models of the Earth) and not a single number. Why? Probably because they don’t want make an article more difficult to read, thus reducing the number of readers (and thus reducing the amount they can make off of advertising.)
Over-simplified and wrongly summarized science may be easier to read (and frankly to write also), but that is a fools errand.

ACLU: Manning Verdict Intended To Intimidate Those Who Would Reveal ‘Valuable Information’
“While we’re relieved that Mr. Manning was acquitted of the most dangerous charge, the ACLU has long held the view that leaks to the press in the public interest should not be prosecuted under the Espionage Act,” Ben Wizner, the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy and Technology Project director, said in a statement. “Since he already pleaded guilty to charges of leaking information - which carry significant punishment - it seems clear that the government was seeking to intimidate anyone who might consider revealing valuable information in the future.”

It’s their usual “point,” that people should be able to divulge government secrets sans any real penalty. Perhaps they think the public will decide the fate of these “whistleblowers” and we have no need for laws against such actions.

Assisted living centers raking in cash, killing seniors
Once upon a time, assisted living facilities were created as a happy medium between simple retirement communities and skilled nursing homes. Elderly residents would live largely independent existences but would, as the name implies, receive largely non-medical assistance for things they could no longer do on their own. But that has all changed, as more Americans lived longer and assisted living operators realized they had a virtually unregulated goldmine on their hands.

Robertson tells viewer with ‘demons’ to ‘burn the house down’ or get exorcism
In a letter to CBN, a person wrote that their house had “moaning coming from the walls, lights turn on and off, the TV changes channels on its own, the beds move, stuff floats off tables, mirrors break, and there is sometimes a creepy fog.”
“The ghosts look like people, but have dark blue light around their feet and hands,” the viewer added. “What do I do?”
“If it was me, I would burn the house down and move on,” Robertson laughed. “But assuming you can’t afford that, I don’t believe in ghosts, I don’t think the Bible supports the concept of people coming back to haunt houses.”
“But I do believe in demons. The Bible clearly says there’s fallen angels and these demonic forces, and you need to get people to come and to get people to do an exorcism over that property and command those demons to leave. That’s what you do. You take authority in the name of Jesus.”
The TV preacher concluded: “And if you can’t do that, move.”

Turns out that one of the lenses had a prism effect. Not in her prescription, no reason for her to have it. They said, “Oops.”
So, maybe it’s not you.
Same thing happened to me once. “Oops.” Yeah right. After spending a whole week looking at things like I was dizzy.

Bam!
The Greenwald fans are convinced and no amount of fact or logic will open their eyes. They act just like TeaBaggers.
Their personal prejudices are confirmed by the string of bullsh!t Greenwald and his sycophants spew, they self reinforce, though I must say, their spelling is better than the TeaBaggers.
Greenwald is a libertarian operative for the GOP, either overt or covert. He shows up just at the right times to attack Obama and the Dems, gives the GOP a pass on everything. Notice that almost all of his “facts” date back to the BushCheney years, but he’s intent on laying it all on Obama? Where was he during the BushCheney fiasco?
But it doesn’t matter what you or I say, the GG faction here is almost as organized and extreme as the RKBA thugs at dKos, they mob diaries, they’ll abuse H/R, twist every argument until it screams, inject complete bullsh!t they believe are facts because that lying sack of sh!t told them so. Best just leave ‘em alone to sit and suffer their own paranoid ignorance and tunnel vision.

Same thing happened to me once. “Oops.” Yeah right. After spending a whole week looking at things like I was dizzy.
With mine, I picked them up, and had a little trouble with them. “You’ll get used to it!”
I go back the next day with a very particular complaint - the left eye is in focus when I look straight ahead. The right eye is only in focus if I look slightly to the left. (I have astigmatism). The guy starts fiddling with the temples, eventually bending the frames so that the lenses are angled a good 10 degrees off of vertical.
My wife looked at me like I was crazy, they looked so weird. So I go back the next day, and there’s a different guy. I tell him the problem. He measures my pupils, he looks up the prescription. The right eye focus was a couple mm to the left.
Then there was the time I tried getting contact lenses. The first prescription, the left eye was GREAT. The right eye was worse than not having them. Optometrist measures the refraction. The lens, which had a weighted bottom to stay in the right orientation, was made 90 degrees off.

I had an old-school (seriously, the guy was a week from retirement the whole time I was his patient) optometrist. A nice enough guy but he had started back when the thinking was to get young people (20s) into bifocals early so they’ll get used to them.
I didn’t get used to them.
I also didn’t get used to smashing my shins on each and every coffee table I tried to navigate around (or even walk past).
Ugh.

Oath Keepers don’t want to be associated with Wingnut Police Chief
re: #130 Eclectic Cyborg
Dang, when you’re so extreme that the OATH KEEPERS don’t want you…
It’s not that the OKers don’t necessarily agree with Kessler:
Kessler sometimes sports a black Oath Keepers t-shirt and has earned praise from the group’s leaders in the past. His militia-style organization and the Oath Keepers share a similar ideological agenda and have at least some overlapping membership, but Alias made clear that Kessler is not a member of his group.
This is nothing more than CYA from them, since Kessler makes them look like the nuts that they are.

No, Guy Montag was the protagonist for Fahrenheit 451, where firemen would burn down houses.
Garth Marenghi is the author, actor, director, and dreamweaver behind the 80s show, Darkplace.

Ha! GM, that’s all I remembered. I looked at his website and there was something about a DVD release. Is it scary or satirical?

re: #175 Mateo Scrounge
There was a Simpson’s episode, just after the Dotcom Bust, where Bart’s cartoons about Homer were the basis of an internet startup that was worth billions one day, and nothing the next.
There’s a guy repossessing the Foozball table, who says of the Dotcom bust, “It’s created a boom for us Repo guys. A boom which will never end!”
I remember that episode. The startup had stock options on TP rolls and the guy was constantly telling Bart to take some.

OUTRAGE!
… A Monday report conducted by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service states that the implementation of Obamacare would continue even if Republicans forced a government shutdown…
The healthcare industry would continue to provide medical services, in accordance with the law, if the federal government “shuts down”, whatever that means. What a concept! What’s next: the military will continue to defend America? Police and fire services will continue? American embassies will remain open overseas? Highway construction will continue? The horror, the horror!
