Rep. Paul Broun: Immigration Reform Is a Plot to Destroy America

Rebranding!

YouTube

Georgia Republican congressman Paul Broun believes that evolution, embryology, and the Big Bang theory are all lies straight from the pit of hell — an opinion that eminently qualifies him to serve as a Republican member of the Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

So it shouldn’t be a surprise to discover that he’s also a first-class fear-mongering anti-immigration xenophobe. It’s just part of the total GOP package these days.

Georgia Republican congressman and Senate candidate Paul Broun has hardly hid his opposition to creating a new immigration policies. Back in June, for instance, he warned that immigration reform would “destroy our country” and “destroy our Constitution and limited government.”

Speaking with Steve Malzberg earlier this week, Broun repeated his warning that if the House GOP compromises at all on immigration, “America, economically, is doomed because we cannot afford to put these people on government largesse.”

When exactly did we cross the line between immigration being part of the great American story to it being an unholy evil upon this nation?

As an immigrant myself, these whackos drive me nuts.

Greek Unemployment Hits Another Record High

The unemployment rate in Greece was 27.6 percent in May, marking yet another record high for the country. That figure is up from 26.9 percent in April, which was also a record, but even that number has now been revised up to 27 percent. The country’s rate is more than double the average rate across the euro zone.

The news is even worse for the country’s young people. The unemployment rate for those ages 15 to 24 is 64.9 percent. In total, 1.38 million people are jobless.

This is the Greek economy’s sixth straight year of recession. Its economy has been struggling under a heavy burden of austerity imposed by eurozone leaders in exchange for bailout funds. The country recently laid off 25,000 public workers even with so many out of work to meet the terms of the next $9.2 billion in rescue funds. It has been steadily cutting the public workforce, reducing wages, raising taxes, and slashin public services.

This x100. Although the formal definition of treason does not apply to movement conservatives, they really are anti-American in every other sense of the word.

As one telling example, the US is a creation of political thought that has its foundations in the Enlightenment. The same Enlightenment that the movement conservatives want to undo, of course.

10 tips for news websites in 10 minutes

1. when someone clicks a link to your website, do not welcome them to your site with a complete page takeover and some crappy ass quote of the day that no one asked for. heres a quote of the day “you suck at the web. stop sucking.” if i was an advertiser i wouldnt want an ad on such a page because the prospective customer is now pissed off. just give them the dumb story they wanted to read and sell them an ad somewhere on that page.

2. if you build your entire business model on stealing other peoples pictures and making funny jokes around them, do not use the smallest type size that you can to “credit” the source. not only are you being a prick, but you inspire other people to your douchey behavior. Here’s an idea, if you really want to throw some love back at the people who’s pictures you jacked, how about linking the entire picture to where you got it? It’s very easy. Ask an intern to show you.

Ken Cuccinelli, the attorney general and Republican nominee for governor in Virginia, told supporters recently they should have no question about his support for E.W. Jackson, the GOP’s polarizing nominee for lieutenant governor in that state.

Cuccinelli made his comments over the weekend in private conference call with a group called Homeschoolers for Ken after a woman asked why he hadn’t “linked up” with Jackson or made a formal endorsement. TPM obtained audio of that call.

Embattled San Diego Mayor Bob Filner (D), who’s facing numerous allegations of sexual harassment, completed his two-week therapy session a week early on Friday, ABC’s 10 News reported.

Finer’s chief-of-staff confirmed to 10 News that the mayor entered his “intensive” therapy session, originally scheduled for August 5, one week early because of “intense media coverage.”

Yes, he should be recalled, if that process is in place, or some other mechanism available to get him out of office.

I can’t figure out how half of Congress is allowed to keep their jobs. Yeah, yeah, they’re elected, but that means that a lot of people in the US agree with them in their own uneducated/low information way and based on their own biases to which those candidates pander, and that is scary as hell.

I can’t even discuss politics w/most people around here because they simply won’t accept simple facts and operate on their own assumptions, gossip and prejudices.

Big donor joins Filner recall campaign

Councilwomen Myrtle Cole and Marti Emerald issued a joint statement that pointed to new evidence of Filner’s conduct, including statements by members of the mayor’s staff to investigators about alleged daily harassment and abuse.

Cole and Emerald, who are closely aligned to the mayor politically, joined the seven other members of the panel in calling on him to step down.

Cole, who won a special election to join the council in May, had previously backed the mayor’s plea for due process rights while allegations of sexual harassment swirled around him.

Emerald, who was attending a governance seminar at Harvard University when the scandal erupted, criticized Filner’s conduct upon her return but did not call for his resignation at that time.

“Mayor Bob Filner must resign immediately,” the councilwomen said in Friday’s joint statement. “Disturbing new evidence about the mayor’s conduct makes it crystal clear he can no longer remain the chief executive of the city of San Diego.”

After acknowledging their previous support for the mayor, Cole and Emerald said, “We are shocked by his conduct and his lack of respect for women, his employees and the office he holds.”

Friday, the campaign to recall Mayor Bob Filner received a financial boost from a local businessman.

Rancho Santa Fe businessman John Cox says he’s opening up his wallet to help fund the grassroots recall effort against the embattled mayor, who has been accused of unwanted advances by women.

Then Greek exports and Greek vacations will be dirt cheap, and Euros, Pounds, Rubles and Dollars will come pouring in to take advantage of the bargains, putting Greeks back to work. Sen. Alberta Darling says state should review public employees retiring at 55

State Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) says she hopes police and firefighters around the state will be open to accepting the strict limits on collective bargaining that were imposed on other public workers by Act 10.

“I really am hoping fire and police will come into the fold,” Darling told a Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce forum this week, the News Graphic reported. “They realize their brothers and sisters will lose jobs unless they contribute.”

Darling also said, according to the article, that the state retirement system should be reviewed. “The idea of retirement at 55 for public employees is something we’re going to have to test — don’t you agree?” she said.

This tells me the wheels are already in motion. Why else should they be “open” to it?

AP apparently is still throwing a tantrum at the admin about that leak investigation a while back. Check out how they keep off-handedly referring to the FISA section 215 phone record metadata collection as “spying”:

AP: OBAMA SAYS PHONE SPYING NOT ABUSED, WILL CONTINUE

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama made it clear Friday he has no intention of stopping the daily collection of American phone records. And while he offered “appropriate reforms,” he blamed government leaks for creating distrust of his domestic spying program.

In an afternoon news conference, the president acknowledged the domestic spying has troubled Americans and hurt the country’s image abroad. But he called it a critical counterterrorism tool.

By calling it “his domestic spying program” they’re pretending he’s contradicted himself from what he said on Leno: “We Don’t Have a Domestic Spying Program” even though he didn’t say anything of the sort in the news conference.

The whole article is filled with misleading paraphrasing/summations and weirdly passive-aggressive passages like:

The White House chose to announce the changes and release the documents on a Friday afternoon in August when Congress was on vacation and much of Washington had cleared out.

Should’ve waited a month-and-a-half for Congress to get back, vs doing a midday news conference. ///

[edit: Interestingly, their twitter account went with a much less inflammatory title in linking to the article:

Arkansas GOP Rep. in college column: Women are ‘the problem’ in divorce

Thanks to online archives, Rep. Tom Cotton (R-AR)’s college-era thoughts about women have been exposed to voters who may be asked to consider him for the U.S. Senate in 2014. Cotton, during his time at Harvard University, penned a 1997 column in which he wrote that men are “simple” and women are “the problem” when it comes to divorce in the United States.

According to the Huffington Post, Cotton argued in a column titled “Promises and Covenants” for the Harvard Crimson he interviews an unspecified number of women (which he admits is a “admittedly small and perhaps unrepresentative”) about their greatest fear only to discover that it is living without a man.

I posted a month or so ago that Walker said he was open to abolishing the unions for police and fire fighters. Now it looks like Alberta Darling is preparing for the other shoe to drop.

Sen. Alberta Darling says state should review public employees retiring at 55

This tells me the wheels are already in motion. Why else should they be “open” to it?

I wonder what DF will have to say about this…

I’d have to review how the pension systems works up there to know if her claim is correct. That’s not something I’ll have time for till the 21st at the earliest.

This really is the GOP plan these days: 1) make things worse for the easiest targets; 2) then make things equally bad for everyone, for consistency; 3) Go to step #1 and repeat.

That’s “funny” cause I’m pretty sure back when this shit was all going down you used to talk about how you were okay with it because Firefighters and cops (you know people who risk their lives as part of their job description) were not getting harmed by Walker’s Union Busting,,..

I was referring to the ‘retire at 55’ part. I don’t favor extending Act 10 to police and firefighters.

I think someone else raises a very salient point to the matter..l do you really want police and firefighters to be forced to keep doing their jobs as they get older?

Public sector unions and pensions are anathema to today’s GOP, since they are visible reminders of those long ago days when labor hadn’t been as thoroughly beaten down as it is today.

Naturally, the conservative response to this is to get rid of unions and pensions for everyone, as opposed to the civilized alternative of unions and pensions for all workers.

Honestly I don’t feel research is needed I am fine with those people whose jobs involve risking their lives getting paid more than most people and being able to retire earlier than most people. If we need to worry about cash inflow/outflow there should doubtlessly be better places to look for it than those who preserve the stability necessary for a society and protect our lives/property from harm.

IE anyone who talks about how firefighters and cops need to loose collective bargaining/be forced to retire later is advancing a plan which will hurt society.

Really, must DF answer for everything Scott Walker does? Or any other republican for that fact.

The targeting of one conservative here gets boring. It would be better to discuss ideas rather than the finger-pointing and accusations.

DF Durring the Scott Walker debate said that he would not support such union busting measures aimed at police/firefighters I felt it was a fair question to ask if he still stood by those statements now that Walker seems to be putting the screws to those two groups.

A lot of people say a lot of shit on a blog. I just don’t think he needs to be held accountable any more than the rest of us. And when he says he will discuss it later, that should be respected.

I’m not trying to evade so much as that pension reform is a highly complex issue. My primary focus on this issue is my own home state of Illinois’ deeply troubled pension system, and so I know very little about Wisconsin’s pension system.

This isn’t an issue on which I can afford to talk out of my ass, but neither can I give it the time it would need right now. Therefore, I must decline to comment.

92 Dark_Falcon  Fri, Aug 9, 2013 8:47:52pm

The owner of the Tumblr blog “You’re not bulletproof” takes an anti-Israel commenter to the woodshed:

In regards to the “Uzi Eagle” post…

I read this comment and thought for a little while how I should respond because this is something that greatly annoys me.

You talk about some sort of morale high road because you don’t want to spend your money on an Israeli made gun cause in essence you don’t want to fund a country you disagree with because of their practices. Or maybe you’re anti-Semitic?

Yet so many of you sing high praise for Russians and other countries, when they’re just as covered in blood as the Israeli’s and Palestinians. You can go to Israel as an American and feel safe. I’d like to see you go to Syria, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Iran, etc and wear a big American flag t-shirt.

If you’re in the mindset that the Israeli’s are committing crimes against humanity, you might as well stop buying everything made in China, and stop drooling over Russian guns cause as I’ve said, all countries are covered in blood, but you choose to focus on one.

Franky I don’t care where my guns are made. I’ll buy Russian, Chinese, Israeli stuff. You’re being hypocritical by saying no to Israeli guns but yes to Chinese and Russian guns. Might as well not buy German and Japanese made products cause of what they did during World War II in accordance to your mentality.

Full post is here
. I must warn that it has graphic footage of a Chinese execution squad and the aftermath of a Russian airstrike and so is NSFW.

Speaking as a 60 year old, I can’t imagine trying to put out a fire, or conduct a rescue at my age. I realize some people might be able to do it, but 55 seems a very reasonable retirement age for that sort of work. Of course, it also seems a reasonable retirement age for someone harvesting tomatoes as well, but that doesn’t seem to be under discussion anywhere.

Speaking for myself, it’s not so much “accusing” as sheer frustration. I can understand rich sociopaths like the Kochs supporting the GOP, because it’s pure short-sighted self-interest for them. But to see the very people directly harmed by GOP policy continue to enable the abuse is maddening and despair-inducing. I just hate the human capacity for self-delusion when it turns into such a destructive form of Stockholm syndrome.

Oh, I totally agree. I see it all the time.

To turn it around though, conservatives think that liberal policies have enslaved the working poor, minorities etc…and wonder why they keep voting for democrats.

The problem is that when they (republican talking heads not DF) talk about why they can’t figure out why minorities keep voting democratic they often compare having a strong preference for one party over another to the mindset that would come with actually being owned by another human being and treated like a piece of property, thereby reminding minorities (or at least a certain group of them) why they have such a strong preference for the Democraric party.

I know that’s what many of them think, but only one set of beliefs is actually supported by objective reality, and it ain’t the one the GOP pushes! (though of course it’s mostly the bought-out corporatist media responsible for this state of mass delusion/lack of awareness).

re: #98 Dark_Falcon

But I don’t do that. I aim my frustration squarely at evil, destructive politicians and their evil, destructive actions, and simply ask how could anyone support something like this.

(though if that comes in the context of several others doing the same, and in harsher language than I would use, I can see how it could feel like a pile-on)

Not only that, the true conservatives would have alternate plans…for health care, immigration etc…but today’s Republican party has abandoned all reason and debate. They operate on obstruction and hate for those not like them. Their fiscal policy is the same for all situations; Lower taxes/cut spending.

The Wisconsin Retirement System is one of the best in the country. Conservascum can’t wait to get their fingers on it. So Alberta Darling doesn’t think people should retire at 55 with thirty years hey? She thinks an aging workforce, who cpst the most should stay on the taxpayers payroll. BTW when they enter the pension system they are off of it.

From assknuckles own mouth:

Gov. Scott Walker is used to hearing cheers from conservative audiences when highlighting fiscal constraints he put on Wisconsin’s budget in 2011.

He seemed a bit surprised, though, during his November 2012 address at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library when scattered applause broke out after he mentioned the state’s pension fund.

Walker was comparing Wisconsin’s fiscal condition to that of California and of his standard punching bag, Illinois, which raised taxes to close a budget gap.

“They have a pension system that’s not even halfway funded,” Walker said of the Land of Lincoln. “Now, in contrast, in our state, our pension system is the only one in the country (that’s) 100 percent funded.”

Will you never learn to think like a Republican? Raising the retirement age beyond physical ability guarantees poor performance. The fireman who can’t get a 200-pounder down a ladder can be demoted for failure and, ideally, fired. Big savings!!!
