Bradley Manning Apologizes for Hurting the United States

Wow, complete reversal
US News • Views: 21,041

You know how Glenn Greenwald and Wikileaks and all the other people who idolize Bradley Manning are always vehemently denying that Manning’s massive document theft hurt the United States in any way?

Well, Bradley Manning doesn’t agree: Bradley Manning Apologizes for Hurting the US.

FORT MEADE, Md. — Bradley Manning has taken the stand during his sentencing hearing for leaking classified material to WikiLeaks and has apologized for hurting the United States and others.

Manning gave an unsworn statement Wednesday, which means he cannot be cross-examined by prosecutors. He began with an apology.

He says “I’m sorry that my actions hurt people. I’m sorry that it hurt the United States.”

Manning says he understood what he was doing and the decisions he made. However, he says he did not believe at the time that leaking the information would cause harm.

On the anarcho-libertarian left, it’s been a huge talking point that Manning’s (and Snowden’s) leaks don’t actually damage US security — they just expose US wrongdoing.

Manning’s statement strikes at the very heart of the far left’s idolization of indiscriminate leakers, and exposes this naïve/dishonest rationale for what it is — a flimsy excuse.

UPDATE at 8/14/13 2:29:50 pm

Here’s the full unsworn statement and apology from Bradley Manning:

First your Honor. I want to start off with an apology. I am sorry. I am sorry that my actions hurt people. I am sorry that it hurt the United States. At the time of my decisions, as you know, I was dealing with a lot of issues— issues that are ongoing and they are continuing to affect me.

Although they have caused me considerable difficulty in my life, these issues are not an excuse for my actions. I understood what I was doing and the decisions I made. However, I did not truly appreciate the broader effects of my actions. Those effects are clearer to me now through both self-reflection during my confinement in its various forms and through the merits and sentencing testimony that I have seen here.

I am sorry for the unintended consequences of my actions. When I made these decisions I believed I was gonna help people, not hurt people. The last few years have been a learning experience. I look back at my decisions and wonder, ‘How on earth could I, a junior analyst, possibly believe I could change the world for the better over the decisions of those with the proper authority?’

In retrospect I should have worked more aggressively inside the system as we discussed during the Providence Statement and had options and I should have used these options. Unfortunately, I can’t go back and change things. I can only go forward. i want to go forward. Before I can do that though, I understand that I must pay a price for my decisions and actions.

Once I pay that price, I hope to one day live in the manner I haven’t been able to in the past. I want to be a better person— to go to college— to get a degree— and to have a meaningful relationship with my sister’s family and my family.

I want to be a positive influence in their lives, just as my Deborah has been to me. I have flaws and issues that I have to deal with, but I know that I can and will be a better person. I hope you can give me the opportunity to prove— not through words, but through conduct— that I am a good person, and that I can return to a productive place in society.

Thank you, your Honor.

He must still serve his time, but subject to his proving his repentance, apology accepted, at least by me.

Logic: While I accept Manning can and should still be punished, my Christian faith requires acceptance of his repentance for his moral failings, provided that repentance is sincere and that he is willing to atone for his actions.

There’s no particular benefit to punishing Manning that harshly. The major problem was that someone as unfit as he was was allowed to get to the data. It was an accident waiting to happen. I’m not saying this to excuse him in any way, but he’s not a unique person. The problem will happen again unless we’re smarter about how the military handles it’s data. I’d love to believe that it was, but who knows, really.

If I were the sovereign of the United Kingdom, they would have by now.

Personally, I’d love to see the members of Iron Maiden given knighthood; they genuinely deserve it. They’ve done a lot to promote English lit, history and culture around the world.

They’re the UK’s unofficial cultural ambassadors, as far as I’m concerned.

See, it all depends on who is advising you at the time and what their agenda is. I think Manning was their patsy.

Those who claimed they were on his side when he released those documents aren’t around to defend him any more, and they’ll take him apart for his comments.

Greenwald is furiously typing the column comparing it to the Stalin show trial confessions as we speak.

Or maybe not. Since Russia is Glenn’s new BFF, he might not want to say negative things about Stalin, since Old Joe appears on icons of the Russian Orthodox Church these days.

1) He walked off under his own power. Actually returned to 11 on 11’s after the injury, then left under his own power.

2) They haven’t run any tests as of the time the rumors started.

House GOP’s New Gambit: Tie Obamacare To The Debt Limit

Even as their hardliners refuse to let up, senior Republicans have all but conceded that they won’t end up defunding Obamacare in a continuing resolution to keep the federal government open after the money runs out on Sept. 30. And even if they do shut down the government, top Republicans observe, it won’t actually stop Obamacare. The strategy makes little sense.

But House Republican leaders are taking so much fire from conservative advocates that they’re weighing a more dangerous gambit: taking the United States’ ability to pay its bills hostage to advance the party’s goal of disrupting and dismantling the Affordable Care Act. The country’s borrowing authority is set to expire later this fall and senior Republicans made a series of promises to their members in January that appear likely to culminate in a showdown.

GOP leaders don’t see a way to persuade their members to lift the debt ceiling without extracting ideological concessions. So a strategy they’re considering, first reported in the conservative news outlets National Review and Washington Examiner, is to pass a two-month continuing resolution to keep government funded at existing levels until, roughly, the debt limit is reached. Then they would offer a sequester replacement in exchange for delaying or defunding Obamacare in order to avoid economic disaster.

Fuck you GOP. I’m fucking tired of you obstructionist ass clowns.

House GOP’s New Gambit: Tie Obamacare To The Debt Limit

Fuck you GOP. I’m fucking tired of you obstructionist ass clowns.

When you vote for a Republican in the House, you are voting for the Hastert Rule and you are voting for this.

And at this point, you’re pretty well out of excuses or explanations. Implode the global economy for daring to push Heritage Foundation ideas while black.

91 Gus  Wed, Aug 14, 2013 2:23:57pm

Seriously. I have friends who will probably vote Republican, because ‘my Congressman isn’t a Tea Partier’, but as long as the GOP holds the House, and if, FSM forbid, they take the Senate, this crazy-ass shit will be what passes for governance.

Mayor Bob Filner Banned From San Diego Hooters

“This establishment recognizes that we all have political differences and we serve people from all walks of life,” window signs in four San Diego-area Hooters reportedly state. “We also believe it is imperative for people to have standards. The Mayor of San Diego will not be served in this establishment.”

And This as well

A Hooters of America representative declined to comment today, instead citing the company’s statement via Twitter regarding the signs posted in San Diego Hooters locations:

“Our Hooters Girls in San Diego have spoken. Not a corporate gig, but we support our girls.”

House GOP’s New Gambit: Tie Obamacare To The Debt Limit

Fuck you GOP. I’m fucking tired of you obstructionist ass clowns.

Well, we may just get our constitutional crisis and impeachment attempt over this one, since I am assuming that Obama is not going to effectively surrender his presidency in order to get the debt limit increased. That bit in the 14th Amendment concerning “The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned” is going to get examined real closely.

If Obama directs that the clause requires him to ignore congress and pay the bills, the GOP will force an impeachment vote. If Obama lets the GOP sink our credit and the world economy, well…we get our Sci Fi dystopian future…

Many criminals break the law out of greed, sheer stupidity, lack of intelligence, or even sometimes even by an unfortunate mistake. In the case of Manning and Snowden, they decided to break the law and become criminals because of hubris. They two twits and their perverse libertarian “logic” are the exact reason why no one should ever, ever, ever trust or follow libertarianism. Ever.

People in other countries never trusted the US. It didn’t start with the Iraq War.

Not true of most of Europe. America was seen as trust worthy and as a force for good. The US intervention in Serbia was viewed by many in Europe as an example of everything that was good about the US and infective about Western Europe. The Iraq war caused possibly irreparable damage to the US image abroad.

re: #11 Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut

There’s no particular benefit to punishing Manning that harshly. The major problem was that someone as unfit as he was was allowed to get to the data. It was an accident waiting to happen. I’m not saying this to excuse him in any way, but he’s not a unique person. The problem will happen again unless we’re smarter about how the military handles it’s data. I’d love to believe that it was, but who knows, really.

I agree - I don’t see the point in throwing the book at him and putting him away for life. He wasn’t a malicious actor, just deeply deluded. And he fell in with the wrong people, who exploited his naivete.

He has to do some time. But I hope the judge shows some leniency.

Our constitution was not designed for this kind of nihilism. It had built-in assumptions that the players were rational and had national interests at heart, even if they did not agree with one another. Nobody thought that a substantial amount of the congress would be actively trying to wreck the country out of political spite.

In truth, I am not sure how you could design a constitution to stop that kind of thing, since it is a function of a dysfunctional polity that elects these idiots.

Not the Onion:

Facebook is a bummer, study says

Don’t press the like button: Facebook is a bummer that makes us feel worse about our lives, according to new research.

Facebook users in a study led by the University of Michigan wound up feeling worse about themselves after two weeks, and their moment-to-moment mood darkened the more they browsed the social medium. It didn’t seem to matter how big their network was, how supportive they thought their friends were, nor why they went to Facebook in the first place, according to the study published online Wednesday in PLOS One.

“We were able to show on a moment-to-moment basis throughout the day how people’s mood fluctuated depending on their Facebook usage,” said University of Michigan social psychologist Ethan Kross, lead author of the study.

“We measured lots and lots of other personality and behavioral dimensions, like, for example, frequency of Facebook use,” Kross said. “But none of the factors that we assessed influenced the results. The more you used Facebook, the more your mood dropped.

The Party of God, at work:

Republican congressman explains climate change: God did it

Republican Congressman Jeff Miller of Florida recently cited his belief in God to explain why he opposed environmental regulations.

During a “Coffee with the Congressman” event on Tuesday, some of Miller’s constituents confronted him about his position on environmental policy. They said there was a large consensus among scientists about the causes and effects of climate change.

In response, Miller said he was willing to defund the Environmental Protection Agency because regulations were hurting job growth. Miller said the Navy only stated climate change was a threat to national security because of President Barack Obama.

“I have scientists that I rely on, the scientists that I rely on say our climate has changed,” Miller said. “Look, it wasn’t just a few years ago, what was the problem that existed? It wasn’t global warming, we were gonna all be an ice cube. We’re not ice cubes. Our climate will continue to change because of the way God formed the Earth.

But…. but… I thought Rush told us if you believed in God you couldn’t believe in climate change?

I used Aloha Traffic school for my ticket a few years back and again for my wife’s ticket last year. Here’s the trick (and you can do it in about 30 minutes instead of two hours).

Open a text editor and copy every page into a document as you click through. When you get to the questions, you can search the text doc.

Now, here’s the thing about online traffic schools…if you miss the non-traffic related questions, you fail. So when you see a question like, “Judy likes to do what when she goes to the beach? and the answers are a) swim b)snorkle c) surf d) sun bathe you just search for “Judy” and find the one line out of 500 that has her name in it.

As far as meth goes, whenever people on facebook are gushing on about how awesome the latest episode of Breaking Bad is, I have the same stock response: “I had better meth in college.”

Ever been to Blacks Beach?

Hey my Navy Bud..I loved the times in San Diego working at Ballast Point.. Some of the best memories that was so long ago..I love SD..My favorite summer, probably around the late 80’s I went TDY there and travel could not find me a room..Nothing..There were so many people there from big time work for the Navy..Tourists and visitors.. There was nothing available I fly in with Government orders…Travel was besides them self..I had orders..
They found a brand new high class Condo built on this hill over SD. I moved into this unreal high class condo with the view. The Gov’t leased it for me for the summer.
Every Thursday night the San Diego Chargers Cheerleaders worked out Gym.
I didn’t even go to work the first week as I settled in with the young rich and famous.
You just don’t tell the Ladies in the BMW’s that you are a civil servent. The first day I went to the Car Rental place and upgraded the difference on my card the best car I
could rent. Black please..Got Cable and called my buddies staying at Hotel circle that we all just fucking scored..We had the best parties that summer..Man living with the rich and famous rocks…That was my first didgital phone installed..No tape for the answering machine..Awesome! No tape? Really? Awesome! Great summer…
We went to Mexico one weekend and bought the most beautiful handmade Chess set I’d have ever seen. To this day I can’t remember what we were doing or where we were with my friends that weekend and I bought it. I woke up in San Diego with a bitch’n Bad ass Chess set Monday morning. Lucky my friends made sure I was safe cause I was stupid and drank too much..I wish somebody could remember the chess incident..I can only image how tripped out I got when I first saw it..Poor guy..I don’t know how much I paid for it..It is a cherished set that is a complete mystery to me.
Great times Bubblehead 11!

I’ve had one speeding ticket in 1968 (even though my son says I drive like a teenager), just blocks from my house, taking a roasted turkey to my aunt’s for Thanksgiving dinner w/the kids in the car. Bored Hwy Patrol guy clocking people (hardly any traffic) and said I was going 45 in a 35. I think he was just bored and lying. Not another ticket until around 2008, again just a few blocks from home, when I got one for an expired inspection which I had forgotten about. Again, the Hwy Patrol. I hate those fuckers. Around here, they’ll give you a ticket for breathing the wrong way. The county cops could care less—they’re too busy doing drug busts.

A couple of months ago, my grandson forgot to put his seat belt on, and again, just blocks from home, a Hwy Patrol guy saw him sans s/b and followed us until I found a place to pull over—the ticket was $160, only $25 of which was the actual fine, the rest “court costs”. G-son paid up at the last minute.

258 ObserverArt  Wed, Aug 14, 2013 4:41:36pm

I once got a ticket on freakin’ Christmas eve in a small Ohio town. When I drove into town I could have sworn the speed was 50. In the same exact area on the way back out of town on the same state route, it was posted 25 but I thought I was past that area. I was doing about 39 when a cop was coming around the curve and he did a u-turn and pulled me over.

About three months later my brother who lives in the area sent me an article out of the local newspaper. It was about the state DOT doing a survey and found the signs were indeed posted different speeds on each side of the same road. They ruled towns can’t do that and they had to refund everyone who had a ticket in the funky speed zone from a certain time and take points off the licenses. So it was reversed.

In the meantime, I was stopped a few weeks later for doing 32 in a 25, as I was coming off a freeway ramp and making a left turn onto the 25 mph street. I had a hot handling little car and took the turn at the speed the car was going coming off the ramp (32!) and was planning at slowing down. I knew the area and the speed. The cop was gonna let me off, but saw I had the 50 in 25 at Christmas and figured I must be some kind of repeat offender and gave me the ticket.

Sometimes, you just can’t win.

Expressing remorse is pretty much standard procedure during the sentencing phase of a trial. He’s facing the rest of his life behind bars; an apology is likely to reduce his sentence. It would be a mistake to read too much into it beyond that.

He entered a guilty plea on a number of the charges before the trial found him guilty on 17 of 22 more. He was always going to end up spending the rest of his life banging big rocks into small ones.

He could have used the opportunity to remain defiant and indicate that he wanted to change the intel community and reveal these communiques and intel to show the world what the US was up to.

He didn’t. He caved.

Completely as it turns out.

It wont matter much in the sentencing - but it’s a repudiation of everything Manning, Greenwald, Snowden, Wikileaks and Assange have been yakking on and on about.

So I’m on my way to work and the Egyptian military and police are clearing some sit-in camps and there were reports of “casualties and fatalities”. It was a long, busy day with lots of nit-noid crap to deal with that really kept me from checking the news. On the way home, I was listening to an NPR interview with the Egyptian Ambassador to the US who was explaining that the camps were full of armed insurrectionists who were using the other campers as human shields and gave the military no choice but to open fire.

“Uh oh”, I thought, “just how bad did it get today?”

And then the numbers came up. Holy fucking baby jeebus, the Egyptian Old Guard put a towel around its shoulders and shot itself in the head!

Sirota and Salon haz a sad because Booker won over their Chosen One in Rush Holt.

Holt never really stood a chance. Lacks charisma and likeability of Booker. And Holt came in third behind Pallone and Booker, so it wasn’t even close.

Let me repeat. Holt, Sirota and Greenwald’s choice, came in third.

Behind Booker.
Behind Pallone.

Now, if Booker wasn’t in the race, then it might have been close. But that’s a hypothetical that didn’t happen. Booker was in the race, he had a big following. He had the GOTV. And yes, money helps on that front. But in the end he connected with voters and Holt never did.

I’ve been lucky, haven’t had any tickets in about twelve years.

got one a couple years ago for rolling through a stop sign. In my state, they thoughtfully make it a 4-pointer, whether you roll, or disregard, so I fought it. Fortunately, my state still makes moving violations criminal offenses, so I demanded a jury trial, and then managed to plead out to a no-point fine.
