Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) Invites Missouri Rodeo Clown to Perform His Racist Act in Texas

The state of the right

This is the week the right wing said, “We’re all rodeo clowns now.”

Capped off by Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas): Stockman Invites Missouri Rodeo Clown to Perform in Texas | Congressman Steve Stockman.

Yes, this is your modern Republican Party, denying the existence of racism in their ranks as they simultaneously excuse and enable it.

Do I really need to explain why symbolically humiliating and lynching Barack Obama in front of a cheering white crowd in Missouri is an act with deeply racist implications? Really?

Stockman’s back after a brief 2 years stint back in the 90s, when his only notable moment was making an ass out of himself by accusing the Clinton administration of raiding the Branch Davidian compound to promote gun control, published within days of the OKC bombing.

His latest stint basically is due to the last round of the Texas GOP’s stacking of the electoral deck, creating a new district that was so red that Stockman won by virtue of being the guy with the loosest connection to reality.

“Disagreeing with speech is one thing. Banning it and ordering citizens into reeducation classes for mocking a liberal leader is another,” said Stockman.

I’m fairly sure that didn’t happen…..

11 austin_blue  Wed, Aug 14, 2013 6:31:07pm

Well, Stockman misses the point. It wasn’t the clown in the Obama mask and cowboy hat (which I thought was kind of funny. Obama luring a Brangus bull away from a rider to prevent the unseated guy from getting stomped into a bloody stain would be great!).

It was the announcer egging on the crowd to root for the bull to injure Obama’s effigy that went over the top. *That’s* indefensible.

Stockman is a twinkie.

I got a fundraising email today from the TX Dems telling me that Debbie Wasserman Shultz is in town soon and it seems like they’re trying to get Davis in the race. I like her. I just don’t know what to think about her running. I mean, I’ll vote for her or for whoever is the Dem nominee, but at the same time I don’t want the whole governor’s race to be about abortion, since that’s what Wheels and the rest of the GOP would do if she got the nod.

I’d personally had my heart set on Julian Castro running, since they had him keynote the 2012 DNC and he’s been working to raise his profile lately. We’ll see.

I once fixed a c++ class by replacing all of the references to a global variable by adding a member variable (if I have to use member variables, and I don’t, I make sure as few classes know they are global as possible). I couldn’t couldn’t completely remove the global at that time (the code was 10+ years old and I’d only been at the company a year) but in the code review I explained to everyone what I had done. The next time someone made a change, they referred to the global variable again, even though the member variable was used one line up.

Thousands of immigration rights advocates and their allies planned to converge on Bakersfield Wednesday to demand action from lawmakers.

Billed as the largest car and bus caravan in California history, supporters of immigration reform from more than 100 cities were heading to U.S. Congressman Kevin McCarthy’s district.

Immigration reform supporters gather at Dodger Stadium for caravan to Bakersfield.

McCarthy represents California’s 23rd congressional district, including most of Bakersfield as well as the Antelope Valley.

He is the third-ranking Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, and has served as the Majority Whip since 2011.

I saw GG retweeted this:

Following the paragraph quoted on Slashdot back to it’s source makes me wonder if Greenwald did:

US and Germany to enter no-spying agreement, German government says

The no-spying agreement talks were announced as part of a progress report on an eight-point program proposed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in July with measures to better protect the privacy of German citizens. The plan was drafted “due to the current discussions about the work of the intelligence services,” the German government said.

In the progress report, the German government found that U.S. intelligence services comply with German law. Also, the operators of large German Internet exchanges and the federal government did not find any evidence that the U.S. spies on Germans, the government said.

Despite the criticism of government surveillance programs, Merkel said people should not forget that intelligence agencies do important work to protect people in Germany as well as abroad. German information, for instance, can prevent attacks on U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, while American data in turn can be used to protect the lives of German soldiers, she said.

So keep up the intelligence cooperation, but enter into a no surveillance pact? Sounds like the same sort of arrangement the US has with the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

“Forced decision”? Even if you believe that he was told he’d get leniency on his sentence if he apologized, that was his choice. Just as he made the choice to violate the oath he took and the trust put in him by his superiors by breaking the law. Watch enough trials and you see plenty of “apologies” that come just before the judge hands down the sentence.

Rep. Stockman disagrees, alleging that progressive voices are trying to create a “climate of fear.”

“Liberals want to bronco bust dissent. But Texans value speech, even if it’s speech they don’t agree with,” Stockman said in a written statement. “From Molly Ivins to Louie Gohmert and every opinion between Texans value free and open political speech. I’m sure any rodeo in Texas would be proud to have performers.”

“People are shocked. They cannot believe Texas’ own have attacked the state and the president,” Garrison said.

During a recent show in Singapore during Megadeth’s “Th1rt3en World Tour,” Mustaine took to the mic from the stage to discuss his beliefs about some of the recent gun violence in America.

“Back in my country, my president,” Mustaine begins and then pretends to gag himself with his finger, “is trying to pass a gun ban so he’s staging all of these murders. The ‘Fast and Furious’ thing down at the border. And Aurora, Colorado, all the people that were killed there. And now, the beautiful people at the Sikh temple.”

Mustaine went on to say, “I don’t know where I’m going to live if America keeps going the way it’s going because it looks like it’s turning into Nazi America.”

Well, it’s a balmy 61 deg here in NC this morning. Supposed to be a high of 70 tomorrow and 69 on Sat, only 20+ degs lower than normal. We’ve had warmer days in October in the past, for chrissakes.

Murfreesboro - what is it about that place?

Rutherford County commissioner’s prayer at school dedication renews debate

A Christian prayer at the recent dedication of Stewarts Creek High School again has raised questions about prayer in schools and at public meetings.

County Commissioner Steve Sandlin, who spoke at the dedication, is bragging about his prayer, but Charles C. Haynes, a First Amendment scholar in Washington, D.C., said the prayer is a violation of current law.

“It’s important to recognize that religious freedom is there to make sure that religion is free from government entanglement or government imposition of religion,” Haynes said.

County school officials said they did not include a prayer in the dedication ceremonies and did not call for a prayer.

The U.S. Supreme Court in 1962 ruled that school officials could not force students to recite a mandatory school prayer.

[…]

State Rep. Mike Sparks also supports Sandlin’s prayer.

“I applaud Commissioner Sandlin for praying over those students and praying over the school,” said Sparks, a Republican from Smyrna. “I think we need more of it this day. I could tell the people were very receptive. The applause was pretty strong.”

They will wreak as much havoc as they can, but they are harming people, perhaps even killing some, in the process. In NC, they’re diddling around with a new program called “NC Fast” which digitizes the food stamp process, and some have been waiting months now to get assistance. Their incompetence is depriving people of the food assistance for which they qualify and food banks are overloaded. My g-son and g-grandson get FS, and haven’t received them since June 15, even though they are eligible and have been recertified. Additionally, the Rs have refused to receive the Fed funding to jump-start Obamacare in NC. Blue Cross/Blue Shield is doing some heavy advertising here to have people sign up for coverage.

I wonder if one of the reasons (besides cowardice and fear of tea party loons) that our elected officials are having fewer town halls this summer is so they don’t have to hear from folks like you and me.

I’m sorry about your grandson and his son, my daughter has 3 kids in Ohio, their benefits were cut earlier in the year.

I’m in GA, the sequester seems to have been another nail in the coffin of what could have been a wonderful program for young adults with autism and other similar disabilities. My son was the perfect candidate for all this but with our idiot Governor slashing the tax base there is less state money coming in. That in turn effects federal dollars. Throw in the sequester and all the delays and moving the program from agency to agency and you get a mess. And people who need help not getting it. The school my son was supposed to go to was rebuilt with stimulus money and staffed with great people. It’s half empty now. The same people who cut the hell out of this program will then crow what a waste of money it is to even try to help”those people” and bitch about the money spent to rebuild this school(which was previously not livable- condemned by the health dept).

That seems to be the M.O. here, break it all to hell and back and then get on the teevee, radio and run various commercials and say, “See? It’s Broken!!” And then blame liberals, Democrats, poor and disabled people, minorities, whoever suits their purposes. Bastards.

I’m just surprised more people aren’t taking to the streets to protest these asswipes. Instead, too many prefer to blame everything on the Black guy, and Black people in general, because some whites will cut off their noses to spite their faces rather than join in with anyone outside their own klan.

It’s total insanity. This county is 95% white, with a lot of poor people, and they keep electing those clowns. It’s the same scenario all over NC. I can’t even excuse people in Charlotte, because they elected Pat McCrory to 7 terms as mayor, buying his Chamber of Commerce bullshit, and then elected him as governor.

BP Attacks Oil Spill Victims, Tries To Hide Criminal Past

In recent corporate public relations attempts, BP has tried to shift the public’s focus from its corporate wrongdoing and outright criminal behavior to criticizing BP’s victims and their legal representatives. According to a privileged, plaintiff’s attorney work document, BP has dumped over $500 million into PR, attacking “judges, special masters, and claimants’ lawyers - trying to change the focus from its tragic track record of ignoring safety and deepwater despair.”

I love their commercials featuring American employees who live in the Gulf region talking about how wonderful it all is and come on down to the Gulf for vacation. Oh. Hell. No. God only knows what’s in that water down there.

Seriously, these fucking corporations, or rather the psychopaths who run them, will not be happy until the entire planet is a smoking, barren ruin. I hope they enjoy their pile of money then, because they’re going to have to eat it to survive. The rest of us will be dead or dying.

re: #111 Justanotherhuman

People are scared and the propaganda has worked to turn neighbor against neighbor. I really do not know how bad it is going to have to get before the morons realize they’ve been had and it’s time to stop blaming liberals for everything. We’re not a sane country right now, and it’s somewhat by design. If we were smart, we’d be going after media outlets and their sponsors with our “take it to the streets” actions first. We’re woefully misinformed or uninformed and it’s mostly because our media totally sucks. If the media didn’t host these fools and spout their idiocy and let them run their mouths unchallenged we wouldn’t have half the bullshit circulating around that we do. I’m in Atlanta, the tea party here farts and it’s all over the news. Every “action” of theirs, even if only 5 people show up is covered on every broadcast all day.

Knowledge is the coin of the realm. Without it, we aren’t going to be able to make wise choices, as we see all around us. Throw in fear with a lack of knowledge and it’s only a matter of time before things get really ugly.

Well, yes. Protesting only goes so far, and usually the police protect the corporations and money and then pepper spray, shoot beanbags(and sometimes real bullets) at and beat up and arrest the citizens protesting. Organization and staying on message is key. Giant puppets, drum circles and Free Tibet(or Mumia, or The Whales or whatever) signs don’t have a place in this if a movement wants to be taken seriously and accomplish anything. You can’t control everything, but this “leaderless movement” bullshit that sunk Occupy shouldn’t even be an option on the table. It goes beyond marching in the streets. There’s much more to a movement of citizens than protesting, hell, that’s the LEAST we can do.

House GOP’s New Gambit: Tie Obamacare To The Debt Limit
It’s the law of the land, piss off GOP.

Considering that the costs to repeal would add to the debt, that would score poorly in the CBO scoring methodology. And given that the annual deficits have been declining significantly, the debt is less of a problem than the fact that the GOP is trying to roll back the improvements to access in health care enacted under the PPACA. That includes ending the preexisting conditions limitations and extending dependent care through age 26. That adds insurance coverage to millions of people.

Will some people see higher premiums? Yes, but we’re seeing higher premiums every year even without any federal changes.

Some of the states with the biggest claimed jumps in premiums had the least comprehensive coverage plans in the nation and they’re now being brought up to standards found elsewhere. With the higher premiums comes far greater coverage, including all kinds of preventative care.

At the same time, the naysayers are busy claiming that everyone will pay these higher premiums. That ignores that the law’s set up with a credit that applies to persons with up to 400% of income above the poverty line. That would reduce the actual premiums paid by the person into something quite manageable and affordable.

The GOP would love to sabotage all this.

At the same time, there’s a few rumblings that the GOP needs to do something more than attempt yet more repeal votes (40+ and counting). There’s some reports claiming that they’re going to come up with an Obamacare alternative bill, but until it’s made public, consider that vaporware (and vapidware at that). The GOP has spent all its capital on repeal, and had they attempted to engage in constructive criticism to improve defective portions of the law and streamline the process to get more people under coverage, they’d have more credibility. But Cantor, Boehner, and the gang all have staked their position to repeal. A pivot now would signify failure is now complete.

The Wahhabi ideology was far more isolated 200 years ago then it is today; plus, you’d never get away with wholesale massacres like one could a couple of centuries ago. Hell, even European powers thought nothing of mass slaughter. Now there’s world opinion to contend with.

The only way to beat the Wahhabis is to promote alternative variants of Islam; Sufism, etc. Hell, even the Ahmaddiyya, even though they’re pretty far from being ‘orthodox’ Muslims…..nonetheless, they’re largely pacifistic. Education is also important. Radical ideologies are best defeated with books, not bullets.

True enough; it requires enormous patience. I’ve talked with some members of the Ummah who were of a more, shall we say, radical mindset; it can be done. And in the West at least, we have the authorities who can deal with the potential crazies. The Sheikh at the Sufi Center I used to go to in Berlin detested Wahhabis - he usually referred to them as “the agents of the Devil”. Nonetheless, he said, “They are our brothers and while we certainly disagree with them and their ideas, we must be better at explaining our ideas and beliefs to the people so they will come to reject the falsehoods of the Wahhabi.”

Just as Ghandi conquered the British Empire by simply wearing them down, the Wahhabi can be dealt with the same way. It just requires enough people to finally - and firmly - say, “No” when they spout off their noxious notions.

All Muslims must refrain from a harsh, angry, and challenging approach, for these are contrary to the Qur’an’s method and essence. Instead, Muslims must adopt the accepting, moderate, calm, and rational approach described in the Qur’an. In other words, they must be role models for humanity and earn people’s admiration for the morality of Islam and themselves. Muslims should also make great progress and produce superb works of science, culture, art, and aesthetics, as well as live Islam in the best way, and thus represent it to the world.

You might be surprised as to who said that, and I’m sure a good many Lizards might be as well.

A pattern is emerging.

I initially didn’t view Rodeo Clown-gate as racist until I read that one article which described much of the crowd’s reaction. I’m sure more than a few ni-CLANGs were dropped in the audience.

But your overall point of a pattern emerging among conservatives? Oh, yeah. I’m starting to see conservatives acquaintances, who never displayed any sort of racial animosity, just drop unapologetic bigoted comments without provocation. The most recent was a guy I’ve known for three decades just flat out state that he’s avoiding a movie theater because there’s too many black people there.

And the ones who weren’t shy about being racist before? They’re just fucking going for broke. It’s getting ugly out here. I have no idea how the Obamas deal with it, particularly the kids.

Also, when you top that off with DF’s “Hey, I’m down with Stop-and-Frisk, tough shit for minorities”, I really wonder how long conservatives can keep this shit up before something gives way.

I honestly think the next move is Republicans in Congress drasitcally cutting the Secret Service’s budget. I really believe they hate Obama that much, they’re willing to indirectly try to get him killed by gutting his security detail.

Instead of spending that 500 million to, oh, you know, CLEAN UP THEIR FUCKING MESS. My husband read that to me last night and was freaked out by it. They’re just pissed they had to spend even ONE dollar on cleaning up after themselves.

I’ve swam in the Gulf water several times (Florida and Alabama) since the Spill and have suffered no ill effects. I’ve also eaten Gulf seafood and experienced the same result.

Having said that, BP is still a dirty word here on the coast. We all know full well there’s tons of garbage lurking under the water, especially off the Louisiana coast, that BP doesn’t want us to remember is there.

Just a couple of days ago, I watched a Frontline special on BP talking about Deepwater Horizon, as well as the 2005 accident in Texas and the incidents in Alaska. The company has a horrible safety record.

Not to mention, people don’t “pick up their check”. Checks are mailed, even emergency help, at least in NC, IIRC. In the meantime, people are given referral slips to food banks, churches and charities, so you’d better have some form of transportation for all that running around.

Mark Levin would be great. I don’t expect any softball questions from him.

Every “question” would be a quoted passage from one of his books, something about “tyranny” and “statists”, ending with “don’t you agree?”

Spoiler: If someone doesn’t agree, he’ll get flustered and yell in his weird nasally Groucho Marx voice, which sounds like Donald Duck having a temper tantrum.

There’s a reason why Levin and Limbaugh have shows on the Radio, where they completely control things, like who gets to talk. They get to shine, because they set up the conditions. And it’s all about them.

Journalists, even the egotistical ones, at least have nodding acquaintance with the idea of not being the center of attention.

Slowly but surely, the worst of the drought seems to be ebbing in the high plains. It’s not by any means good out there, but things are headed in the right direction, if you watch the 12-week animated loop. More heavy thunderstorms are forecast for the hardest-hit areas today.

Since the employer-mandate part of the ACA was delayed until 2015 it would seem strange for an employer to use it as an excuse to cut someone’s hours or status. In any event, under the ACA the workers would be eligible for subsidized health insurance when they weren’t (assuming they weren’t) before. You might want to mention this to your Ohio friend.

Kroger’s work boards seem to indicate that the company is reducing full time equivalents. But this article (from April) cuts the other way.

My take is that they’re looking to cut costs, and think that shifting to more PTers will help the bottom line. Consumer Reports ranks Kroger in the middle of the pack.

But the company is apparently quite profitable. So it seems like this is a further effort to goose the stock price and it’s trading near its 52 week peak.

They are “quite profitable” because for the last several years they have undertaken a huge expansion (new stores) as well as remodeling existing stores all around here in the southeast. They have moved in right next to other chains in the area (Publix ,,, Ingals) and beat the snot out of them in price and quality while being competitive price wise with Wal Mart groceries

The ‘mystery’ aspect of it was is that no body was ever found, and by all accounts, there was a pretty thorough search. Granted, we’re not talking “CSI” here, but somewhere out there in the deserts outside of Cairo lies an infamous ruler.

Most likely, he was bumped off by someone who was pissed off at him, and most likely for deeply personal reasons. But who knows? Maybe someone from the royal court figured, “Oh hell no, this guy’s gotta go.”

This ignores the business model where you take care of your employees and they respond in turn by giving you their best work and staying with you over the long haul. This has long term benefits as we all know. You get better customer service, less theft, employees who care about your business.

So, since what the employer pays for insurance is actually part of the employee’s compensation, by cutting their hours to ‘part time’ status to drop coverage, Kroger is reducing their workers’ compensation/hour.

Put more bluntly, they’re getting more work for less money. Essentially stealing the labor of people whom they originally hired under one set of expectations, but then changed for Kroger’s own benefit because they CAN.

Gee, if only there were some kind of mechanism by which the workers could acquire some power to exert force for their own benefit, much as the shareholders of Kroger formed for THEIR benefit….

re: #300 Justanotherhuman

I know corporate businesses around here are doing exactly that. Reduced my g-son from close to 40 hrs/wk to a max of 25. And he’s one of their best workers—wanted him for mgmt. They’re hiring addtl PT employees to make up the hours needed to run the place. People I’ve talked w/who also do retail type work are complaining about the same thing—their hours cut, and more PT’ers being hired, to keep hourly employees to under 30/wk, mostly around 24-25, with a little “give” to cover sick or absent employees.

As far as I can tell, the real irony of all these wingers blaming Obamacare for employers cutting full-time jobs is: the system (employer-based health insurance) that lets them cut costs by replacing a full-timer with two part-timers (and badly penalizes workers for having a 29-hour job instead of a 30-hour one) is the very system Obamacare is engineered to weaken.

I’ve been waiting decades for some kind of fix to this bastard arrangement, and the way it kills entrepreneurship and freelance trades while giving preferential treatment to mega-retailers like WalMart. The whole thing was invented as a way for megacorps to dodge payroll taxes in the first place, and I’ll be delighted to see it go. The ACA is kinda weak sauce for chipping away at it, but it’s a step.

Naturally, people like John Schnatter and those Applebee’s and Subway franchisees and now Kroger are happy to exploit the system their political forefathers invented and then blame the symptom on the cure. Bleah.

I’ve heard this crap a LOT from wingnuts though, so it may not be true. Some Kroger stores, even here in the South, have union employees working in their meat depts for example. The store I’ve shopped at for 17 yrs has some of the same employees that were there the first day I went there, most of them are in management or run departments now.

My wingnut neighbor’s niece posted a little while back that her employer, a local chain of bowling alley/video arcade/bar/ restaurants laid off 65 out of 75 employees because of Obamacare. It’s bullshit, we were in there a week ago on a Friday and there were at least 20 people working, there is NO way to keep a place that large going with only 10 employees. I also seriously doubt most of those kids get employer based health insurance in the first place. They lie because they hate the President, period, full stop.

What I see a lot of are articles where business owners bitch that they can’t find people who can just walk in and take over the job right away with no training. It used to be that you’d TRAIN people ON THE JOB. They even had a name for it, if only I could remember what it was….

It used to be that business folks understood that if you couldn’t fill a job for a particular wage, you’d have to offer more; that if you couldn’t find trained people, you’d have to train them. For some reason, they now believe they’re entitled to cheap, fully-trained workers who won’t ever take a better offer.

Yeah, and I’m old enough to remember when there was actually a “cost of doing business” philosophy to running one, not just how much you could increase profits without actually doing anything differently. And a lot of that profit was plowed back into the company for growth and capitalization, not paid out to enrich a few people. Companies could actually survive losses and bounce back if they had that reserve profit and ran the company right and could weather the business cycle.

Humiliation is not racism.

It is just humiliation. Rodeo clowns egg the bull on and do get chased around. Thats their job.

So its symbolic humiliation according to Charles? What was the clown “symbolizing”?

The only somewhat response I received when I previously asked what did the clown do that was racist was that it was mocking a black man and somehow that ties back to slavery? Can’t see anything the clown did that refers to slavery.

You may think what the clown did was over the top and in bad taste but calling any criticism of Obama racist demeans the word.

Obama is not a descendant of slaves so even somehow tying it to slavery, which is lame, does not apply to Obama. His dad came from Kenya and his mom is white. He is not even black. He is mixed race.

If you want to read about a hateful racist act google Ray Widstrand. The clown, come on.

This has been going on for awhile now, probably 15-20 yrs or more. Somewhere someone got the brilliant idea that the more part timers you had the less benefits you had to worry about paying out. Pay ‘em less and work ‘em harder, what’s not to love if you’re a rich asshole?

This ignores the business model where you take care of your employees and they respond in turn by giving you their best work and staying with you over the long haul. This has long term benefits as we all know. You get better customer service, less theft, employees who care about your business.

My son’s generation is going to be the first to have less opportunity and income than his parents generation (who are struggling too). These god damned companies have more money than EVER in history and they’re doing this shit. It should be criminal.

Its the next step for these corporations. Starting in the 90s it was out-sourcing, now where they cant out-source they go to PT workers to avoid benefits.
Bottom line is profits for the stockholders. Obamacare is used as the excuse to do what they would be doing anyway.

The key thing is not letting them get away with it.

What are they getting away with? If you think there i some violation of your space (i.e. the environment) then pass regulations to protect the environment. If you think they are getting away with fraud then pass consumer protection laws.

Making money is not getting away with anything. Its what makes people go to work.

This is exactly what is meant by “not letting them get away with it.” Passing protections.

To me, objectively, what happened in Egypt was a coup d’etat. The interim Egyptian government might have more nuanced phrases for it, but overthrowing a democratically elected government - even one I personally am ideologically opposed to - is not exactly democracy’s finest hour. Little wonder that far too many in the Middle East are so skeptical of democratic governance.

Privately, if you talk to many Arab people, while they may not like Israel (for a host of reasons) they admire it’s democratic government. More than a few have told me, “Man, I wish we had that.”

Who is “you guys”?

I am pro-people but that includes people who own businesses.

If a business is fouling the water or the air then we should pass a regulation to prevent that. We have quite a few of these already but that does not mean new ones may not be needed.

If a business is defrauding the consumer then either prosecute them under existing law or eliminate the loophole that allows them to get away with it.

I think being enraged and “corporations” in general is misguided. I work for one and I am a shareholder in quite a few. I guess I don;t share the contempt.

True, blacks were enslaved 150 years ago and in some parts of the country legally discriminated against until about 50 years ago.

Obama was born in 1962 to a Kenyan and a white woman from Kansas. He is mixed race. He or his ancestors were not part of the crowd that was wronged. Same as my skin is white and I am of European descent. So were the jews. Neither I or my ancestors were wronged by the holocaust.

But are you saying that because of slavery and Jim Crow you can’t criticize or mock a person with dark skin? Disagree.

Also, if you can’t stand being mocked or criticized president may not be your best job choice.

re: #302 FemNaziBitch

With So Many Job Openings, Why So Little Hiring?

A second explanation is that employers are offering jobs at wages that are too low to attract good applicants. Alan Krueger, a labor economist at Princeton University who recently stepped down as chairman of President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, believes this to be an important piece of the puzzle.

But we don’t even need a gosh darned minimum wage!!

One explanation the article doesn’t address is the high turnover rates at a lot of positions. Sometimes jobs are listed constantly because people quit them in short order after being hired, so there’s a constantly revolving talent pool for those positions. Hence, companies keep the same posting listed constantly.

Also, the article doesn’t seem to differentiate between part and full time jobs. I’d love to see that breakdown. How many of these “advertised” positions are part-time with no benefits (and sometimes even commission only)?

I thought this was about drive-through banks. Since I got a smartphone I don’t make deposits at the bank anymore, I use a smartphone app.

Then I clicked on the link and it’s about Drive-In Movies! WTF I thought those totally died out in the ‘80’s.

Drive-In Movies are a relic of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s, they were dead long before the “Digital Era.”

We put in a new 4-screen a couple years ago that plays the same releases as the in-town chain. That’s in an area beset by high temps and mosquitoes much of the year. There are ex-teenagers who only bought cars to get to the drive-in movie via the drive-in diner.

re: #469 Varek Raith

Digital was a godsend for studios. They can “rent” out the movies directly and cut out the little guy completely.

This probably devalues the movie experience but it makes a lot of money.

Someone clearly hasn’t been paying attention to the shitstorm that Russell Simmons is currently facing from the black community. They’re exponentially more pissed off at him than they are over another racist white guy mocking the President and a bunch of other racist white guys being outraged that their racism is being called out.

Honestly, is there any liberal outrage over the Obama rodeo clown thing at all? It just seems like wingnuts reacted like a Pavlov dog to what they figured would generate outrage on the left. It seems like there’s a whole lot of counter-outrage from the right, and nothing else.

I went to see “Pacific Rim” on the big screen. The sort of movie that needs the cinematic experience, at least for me. Kaiju and giant robots and all that.

I don’t go that often though; prior to “Pacific Rim”, the last time I went to a theater was for “The Dark Knight Rises”.

Ok back on point, what did the clown do that was racist, not disrespectful or humiliating or in bad taste.

What was racist?

As I said upthread:

“Well, Stockman misses the point.

Stockman is a twinkie.”

You do see the difference, yes?

It’s actually an interesting circumstance. For many people their religious beliefs are the most highly held and important of any they have, trumping even established secular law.

While the Christians are no doubt crying “persecution!” over this, it’s more than that. If the bakery owner had been atheist and refused to serve the lesbian couple he or she would be in the same boat. The religion of the person at the core of this is not as important as you might think.

It does create a potentially volatile situation when people are completely willing to violate or completely ignore secular law because it goes against their religious beliefs. As gay marriage legalization increases, these types of legal battles will too.

Not because she’s conservative, but because she’s just plain bad. She doesn’t travel within a hundred miles of Post standards. She parrots and peddles every silly right-wing theory to come down the pike in transparent attempts to get Web hits,” Pexton wrote. “Her analysis of the conservative movement, which is a worthwhile and important beat that the Post should treat more seriously on its national pages, is shallow and predictable. Her columns, at best, are political pornography; they get a quick but sure rise out of the right, but you feel bad afterward.

And she is often wrong, and rarely acknowledges it. She was oh-so-wrong about Mitt Romney, week after week writing embarrassing flattery about his 2012 campaign, calling almost every move he made brilliant, and guaranteeing that he would trounce Barack Obama. When he lost, the next day she savaged him and his campaign with treachery, saying he was the worst candidate with the worst staff, ever. She was wrong about the Norway shootings being acts of al-Qaida. She was wrong about Chuck Hagel being an anti-Semite. And does she apologize? Nope.

Rubin was the No. 1 source of complaint mail about any single Post staffer while I was ombudsman, and I’m leaving out the organized email campaigns against her by leftie groups like Media Matters. Thinking conservatives didn’t like her, thinking moderates didn’t like her, government workers who knew her arguments to be unfair didn’t like her. Dump her like a dull tome on the Amazon Bargain Books page.

This story is making the usual rounds today:.

Students offered grants if they tweet pro-Israeli propaganda

In a campaign to improve its image abroad, the Israeli government plans to provide scholarships to hundreds of students at its seven universities in exchange for their making pro-Israel Facebook posts and tweets to foreign audiences.

The students making the posts will not reveal online that they are funded by the Israeli government, according to correspondence about the plan revealed in the Haaretz newspaper.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, which will oversee the programme, confirmed its launch and wrote that its aim was to “strengthen Israeli public diplomacy and make it fit the changes in the means of information consumption”.

I’m pretty sure something like this isn’t necessarily exclusive to Israel, but using astroturfed tweets as a basis for a school grant seems like a rather poor academic standard.

I bought the Electrolux mixer to replace the Hobart that I have had for over 30 years. It still works great, I just needed a machine that could handle larger amounts of bread dough.

When Zedushka knocked the brand-new mixer off the counter, the fitting for the power socket was knocked out. I took it to the repair shop that serviced the old Hobart. The guy had never seen an Assistent before but replacing a power socket is no big deal.

He also told me that the newer KitchenAid mixers, the 6-qt. models, are a bunch of crap.

I got it home and once I was able to plug it in again, mixed up some bread.

I get that, but let me ask you this. What should a religious, yet rational person do when a law is passed that apparently requires them to commit act that runs contrary to their beliefs?

Separation of church and state trumps everything, IMHO. Laws are secular for a reason. I don’t boycott businesses just because I don’t agree with the religion of someone, unless they come out with hate speech (like the Chick-Fil-A owner). I don’t even ask what it is. They can practice whatever religion they want to, as long as it doesn’t affect me as a person.

But discrimination under the guise of “religion” shouldn’t fly. I remember too well the old days of the lunch counter sit-ins and such. And, more recently, pharmacists who didn’t want to dispense lawfully prescribed drugs because of their own stand on contraceptives and abortion.

I bought the Electrolux mixer to replace the Hobart that I have had for over 30 years. It still works great, I just needed a machine that could handle larger amounts of bread dough.

Nice. So many products made today are just cheap disposable crap. Like the $9.99 coffee maker a person can pick up at WalMart; it’ll work for a few months, and then when it goes belly-up, folks will just buy a new one.

I have an old - really old - Tesla television (not to be confused with the electric auto manufacturer). Great-grandmother accuses Mayor Bob Filner of sexual harassment

SAN DIEGO - A great-grandmother will hold a news conference with attorney Gloria Allred early Thursday afternoon, alleging she is a sexual harassment victim of Mayor Bob Filner.

A news release stated the senior citizen was the “victim of continuous inappropriate sexual advances by the Mayor while trying to do her job at City Hall.”

The release said both Allred and the great-grandmother would address the media at 1:00 p.m. at the Westin in downtown San Diego.

“I can’t hire machinists with 10 years of experience for $10 an hour! It must be our education system!”

Back in 1986, at my state-run employment center, I would see job listings for such things as “Programmer wanted; must have 5+ years experience with Windows” Clue: Windows 1.0 was released on 20 November 1985.

Or “Programmer wanted; must have proficiency with OS386.” Well, that operating system was vaporware at the time, ie, not yet released, altho I’d seen sales ads for it in magazines such as BYTE.”

What was really crappy about the whole process was that employers wanted all possible info about job applicants, but applicants, in most cases, couldn’t even find out which state(s) a listed job was for, and not even the name of the company in most cases, until after providing such info.

So I’m inclined to agree that there may be some problems with our education system.

Rick Santorum accused of soliciting illegal campaign contributions

According to Sunlight, a 69-year-old energy oil executive from Louisiana by the name of Bill Doré told Santorum that he wanted to give him $1 million, far in excess of the $2,500 limits on individual contributions to primary and general elections. He could, however, contribute as much as he wanted to a nominally independent super PAC on one condition: that the candidate himself neither implicitly nor explicitly request a donation in excess of those legal limits.

Directing a contribution in excess of those limits is precisely what the unwitting Doré accused Santorum of doing.

When Sunlight’s reporter expressed surprise at his comments, Doré insisted that he didn’t “want to get [Santorum] in any sort of problem” because he “would not want to compromise his future.” He then tried to walk back his initial statement, claiming that Santorum had asked him to contribute the sum to the Republican Party, an equally compromising proposition given that $30,000 is the ceiling for such contributions. He then confirmed it was the super PAC to which Santorum had directed his donation.

At least until a few hours later, when he backtracked again, claiming that upon further reflection, it was an aide to the former Senator — and not the man himself — who told him about the super PAC. “Did he actually tell me that?” Doré asked, “I don’t think he did.” This last statement neatly conforms with the strictures of the Citizens United decision, rendering the $2.5 million Doré contributed to the Red, White and Blue Fund super PAC an unsolicited and, therefore, wholly legal donation.

On Wednesday, the Campaign Legal Center and Democracy 21 filed a joint complaint with the Federal Election Commission against Santorum and “other person(s) affiliated with and acting as agents for” him, charging that his interaction with Doré constitutes a solicitation of funds in excess of $5,000.

Why should we trust corporations that require we create regulations to prevent them from fucking up the environment, then have to take them to court to punish them for ignoring the regulations only to see them settle out of court and repeat the offences?

Hmm?

McClintock thinks you can only have a crime if there is a gun involved

There’s no such thing as financial crime, according to Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA).

At a town hall meeting in El Dorado Hills, California on Tuesday, a constituent asked McClintock for his “stance on Wall Street criminal practices.” The congressman responded, “Well first of all, for a criminal practice there has to be a gun. It’s pretty simple.”

re: #562 erik_t

Bummer for them, but I see absolutely no alternative.

“Cater” here, of course, meaning quite literally to serve them in the same way they serve others.

There is a social conflict here between citizens being able to get a service (a cake decorated in their desired manner) and whether a private enterprise should be *required* to handle that business. And, for what reasons, are they allowed to refuse said business?

We have the currently discussed case about a cake shop refusing to do a cake for a gay wedding.

How about a hypothetical case - a Jewish bakery asked to do a cake decorated with swastikas and Hitler’s visage for some Neo-Nazi celebration?

In both cases the shop is being requested to do business that includes construction of an object that contains imagery they find personally distasteful for religious or political reasons.

And I think a complicating factor is how easily the business can be taken elsewhere. If the cake shop is in a large city and there are dozens of cake shops there then a substitute can probably be found without great difficulty. If the cake shop is the only one in a small town and there is not a substitute for 50-100 miles (or more), then arguably substitution is of much greater difficulty.

And, at that point, what should be the *legal* requirements or actions potentially forced by government?

That there can be local non-legal action such as boycotting the business or even potentially a non-violent protest against it is a given. That’s standard market forces reacting to how a business treats customers.

In an interview with TMZ at the baggage claim area of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Young was asked if a gay wrestler could be successful in the WWE.

“Absolutely. Look at me,” Young replied. “You know, I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay. And I’m happy. Very happy.”

The TMZ interviewer replied that he was “flabbergasted” because no WWE wrester had come out while still under contract.

“I just don’t think it matters,” Young said. “Does it matter? Does it matter to you? Does it change what you think about me?”

“I guess if you want to call it coming out, I really don’t know what to say it is, but I’m just letting you know that I’m happy with who I am, I’m comfortable with myself, and I’m happy to be living the dream,” he continued. “To be honest with you, I’m happy with myself, and some people might not like it and some people will like it. re: #604 erik_t

IANAL, but I suspect there’s some sort of, for lack of a better phrase, catch-all obscenity statute that would be applied on a case-by-case basis. By the same token, I’m sure a cake shop owner named Bob Loblaw could refuse to make a cake with the message “TROLOLOL BOB LOBLAW’S MOTHER IS A WHORE”.

There’s presumably some sort of societal-unanimity implied in weighing these issues. The vast majority of the population would find Hitlercake to be distasteful, whereas this is plainly not the case with a gay-marriage-cake.

How would a gay wedding cake be any different than a straight wedding cake, except that it has 2 grooms or 2 brides on top?

They might have requested a rainbow layer cake which looks totally awesome.

WTF, was there some overnight memo in Conservative Land mandating that everyone go into “Deny or downplay racism toward Obama” mode?

Basically, yes. All the right wing blogs and media are currently spewing this shit. All of them. It’s the Unison Wingnut Chorus phenomenon.

And I picked a pretty clearly (and widely) distasteful example on purpose.

Given that (in the US) swastikas are not illegal symbols, what would be the legal basis for denying someone requesting Hitler-Cake to be made? Or for enforcing that it be made since it is not illegal?

Culture wars aside, who is actually going to ingest a swastika cake made by a Jewish bakery or a same sex wedding cake made by homophobes?

Well, the baker who was requested to make the Hitler birthday cake called Child Protective Services if I am not mistaken. (Google “Hitler Birthday Cake”)

Did the Trabant ever have a presence in Czechoslovakia, or did they have more local offerings there? I always kinda wondered how the eastern-bloc “combined public operations” system worked.

You’ll see a few Trabant’s running around here, but locally there was Škoda, which is still around as part of the VW Group now.

You’ll see the occasional Lada, Wartburg, old Dacia on the road. Old Škodas are pretty common here.

The new Škodas are sweet.

I’m still upset about DF’s “I’m with Coulter on Stop and Frisk” bullshit.

I alluded to it my post earlier, but it’s really getting upsetting to see people who I think are intelligent essentially endorse this kind of casual racism. The fact they’re my age (mid-40s) or younger makes it worse. We were supposed to be done with this fucking shit by the time I was this old.

I’ve seen liberals do some stupid things, but nothing along the lines of the way racism is becoming a core conservative value.

More trivia: Sgt. Joseph Getraer was played by Robert Pine. His son Chris is Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek films.

Westboro Baptist. Ask for it, have it analyzed, and then sue the pants off the maker.

In summary, I think my point is that there is a balancing act between allowing a private business to discriminate about their selected customer base as a legal right — without it becoming a “hidden” societal methodology for widespread and effective discrimination; e.g. keeping a group out of a community by widely denying them services.

And then the historical baggage comes in from certain groups having long-standing issues with services such as lunch counter service.

No real idea. Again, not a lawyer.

I assume there’s some sort of blanket-obscenity-rule, otherwise we’d see the anon/script-kiddie crowd abuse this sort of thing.

HURR HURR WHY CAN’T I PUT UP A GIANT SIGN SAYING ‘FUCK YOUR MOM’ ON MY LAWN, FREEDOM OF SPEECH MANNNNN

Walmart ended up making the cake- the most recent article that I’ve found so far doesn’t say who contacted CPS, but at the time of the article, the couple didn’t have custody of any of their children, including a newborn taken right away. . still looking for an update but have to say- if the father is as clueless as his comments indicate such as “Adolph Hitler is a cute name” and his inability to grasp just why people are confused about naming a child Aryan Nation…even as a middle name I’m not hopeful about the future of his children…
