Snowden’s Father Doubts Wikileaks and Greenwald Have Edward’s Best Interests in Mind

While Greenwald tries to sell an interview with Snowden for a cool 50 grand
World • Views: 19,201

Against the advice of their lawyers, Edward Snowden and his father had a little Internet chat this morning, and some interesting information came out of it.

For example, Wikileaks is now selling branded Edward Snowden T-shirts and coffee mugs in their online store.

On Aug. 9, WikiLeaks started a “Journalistic Source Protection Defence Fund,” to raise money for Mr. Snowden, saying he had endorsed it. So far, the fund has raised $12,011, according to WikiLeaks’ website.

WikiLeaks also recently began selling Edward Snowden merchandise, including T-shirts and coffee mugs, via its online store. WikiLeaks didn’t respond to questions about the fund or allegations made by with Lon Snowden’s legal team.

Snowden’s father seems to grasp that the people his son has fallen in with may not have his best interests at heart:

More fractious is the relationship between Lon Snowden and his son’s other advisers, WikiLeaks and Mr. Greenwald. Mr. Fein’s wife and spokeswoman, Mattie Fein, said Lon Snowden’s legal team doesn’t trust the intentions of Mr. Greenwald or WikiLeaks and worry they are giving Edward Snowden bad advice.

“The thing we have been most concerned about is that the people who have influence over Ed will try to use him for their own means,” Ms. Fein said. “These guys have their own agenda here and we aren’t so sure that it has Ed’s best interest in mind.”

Ya think?

Meanwhile, Glenn Greenwald is doing his best to cash in as well, trying to “license” an interview with Snowden to NBC News — for $50,000. When Lon Snowden’s lawyer mentioned this cynical ploy, Greenwald flew into a rage and denied everything.

On Sunday, Ms. Fein says she was called by a producer at a U.S. television network saying Mr. Greenwald had been shopping around an exclusive interview with Mr. Snowden for seven figures.

She said she warned the producer that she would cut off access to Mr. Snowden’s father, who has appeared regularly on television, to anyone who agreed to Mr. Greenwald’s terms. A few hours later, she said she received a furious email from Mr. Greenwald, calling her a liar and denying he had made such an offer.

Mr. Greenwald calls the accusation that he was shopping an interview “defamatory,” but did admit to having informal discussions with NBC about producing an interview he would conduct himself and licensing it to them for $50,000.

“There were no negotiations. I didn’t shop anything around. I didn’t go to NBC, they called me and asked and made these offers,” he said. “By the time we paid the crew and got ourselves to Moscow and stayed there for two-three days, we would end up losing money, or maybe breaking even.”

Stay tuned for the next episode of “Edward Snowden Goes to Russia (or, Wikileaks and Greenwald Cash In).”

If GG is worried about losing money on the deal then why doesn’t NBC just offer to cover his expenses for the exchange for the interview?

26 Justanotherhuman  Thu, Aug 15, 2013 1:30:42pm

So—does this mean GG and Wikileaks aren’t working that closely together? After all, Wikileaks could probably get enough money together for “putting a story together” for GG to deliver, couldn’t they?

Perhaps Lonnie Snowden has Bob Schieffer or someone else in mind to interview his son? Someone at least who has no skin in the Snowald/Wiki game?

I have the feeling everyone is going to try to make money off Eddie.

Greenwald isn’t getting paid for a story, a product of his own wit and reason. He’s trying to get paid for someone else’s story, a story which cannot be told to anyone else.

I’ve worked in the industry. I think an episode of Frontline, which takes about a month to shoot and edit, costs $350,000 to make. Interviews are much, much simpler, the editing is easier, and there’s very few salaries involved. Hiring a local crew is much cheaper, of course, but even if you want to take a sound and video guy with you, $50,000 for a single interview is pretty steep.

If he was simply offered it, of course, then it’s not really a slam on him, but is there any particular reason you believe Glenn Greenwald?

Okay. I would be sympathetic to that concern if we were talking about a contract that was going to line his pockets. But, really, $50,000? That’s peanuts when it comes to producing an international report.

Producing? He isn’t producing shit, and he’s not exactly defraying any substantial expenses. He’s taking advantage of Snowden’s inaccessibility to keep himself the focus of the story. While that little glibertarian dumbass is getting FSB’d out the wazoo (which, mind you, is richly deserved), Greenwald is seeking to profit from Snowden’s story.

He’d have the license to any interview he created. It’s not unseemly for a reporter to charge money for an interview when he’s the only one who can get access. The amount of money is a little high, but it’s nothing really that shocking in terms of making money as a reporter.

It is kind of weird in terms of activism, though.

Well, if you assume unknown amounts of bribery, any amount could be. As described, it’s quite high for a single-subject interview. There’s also no need to bring crew, Moscow has plenty of people who can do audio/video, and at much lower prices.

It’s this one:

The Malawi National Museum in the Upper Egyptian city of Minya was severly damaged and looted by rioters during deadly clashes that erupted across the country.

During Wednesday’s clashes, pro-Morsi protesters allegedly broke into the museum property, adjacent to the town police station and the Malawi council building, and announced their sit-in in the museum’s garden, said the antiquities ministry in a statement issued on Thursday.

Security guards were beaten and injured by some protesters who were attempting to break into the museum building, a security guard who preferred to remain anonymous told Ahram Online.

The pro-Morsi protesters tore down the museum’s internal gate and broke into its halls, damaging and stealing some of its treasured artefacts. The looters also break down the museum surveillance cameras and robbed some of the stationary of the museum administrative department, according to the statement.

This was excerpted from Al-Ahram, so draw your own conclusions.

109 lawhawk  Thu, Aug 15, 2013 2:28:35pm

You know things are splitting apart at the seams for Greenwald if he’s getting into a pissing match with Snowden’s father. Who knows Edward better, his dad, or Greenwald? Who’s more likely to convince Edward that he’s being screwed or helped by Greenwald and the Wikileaks gang?

That would be Snowden’s father. And his father’s come to the conclusion that Snowden’s getting used by Greenwald and will be dropped like a hot potato once the novelty has worn off.

Snowden’s dad sees the writing on the wall - and it’s only a matter of time before Edward does too.

Edited to add: I meant the plot/story lines are written like a serial/soap opera, rivalries, backstabbing, even cheating and affairs. The physical stuff is real though, these guys spend a lot of time at the gym and running, etc. Just because they know who the winners and losers are beforehand doesn’t mean they aren’t getting the crap kicked out of themselves in the ring.

Could some of the many people down-voting my comment please help me to understand what you think would be so wrong with NBC paying Greenwald $50k to produce an interview with Snowden. That figure seems pretty reasonable for an international report and such contracts with freelance contributors are fairly routine in the industry.

Just for that, you get another one, numbskull.

Now, the answer to your question (which I’m sure that you will swiftly brush aside): media outlets paying for interviews is tabloid journalism, something to be avoided by “straight” news outlets because it’s skeezy as fuck. If GG was shopping around a potential exclusive Snowden interview (that he would mediate), looking for the highest bidder, that’s even worse, because that confirms he has no journalistic integrity and is in this whole situation up to his eyeballs.

MOSCOW — Pole vault great Yelena Isinbayeva condemned homosexuality Thursday after criticizing competitors who painted their fingernails in rainbow colours to support gays and lesbians in the face of a new anti-gay law in Russia.

If we allow to promote and do all this stuff on the street, we are very afraid about our nation because we consider ourselves like normal, standard people,” Isinbayeva, a two-time Olympic champion, said in English. “We just live with boys with woman, woman with boys.

I really am wondering if this fellow might be a serial killer. From what I’ve read, either they brag (and often exaggerate) their crimes, such as the Zodiac Killer, or they stay quiet, releasing more info as time goes on. I’ve read that in both cases, it’s a way to maintain control, either through striking terror and intimidation into people’s hearts or driving everyone crazy by not spilling the beans.

I don’t know anything about profiling serial killers except what I see on “Criminal Minds” and that’s all bullshit.

The Snowden affair’s most useful long-term benefit to the Russians may lie in solidifying a new class of useful idiots in the form of Snowden’s right-wing and crank libertarian supporters. This is a far larger, more energetic, and, I daresay, more influential, constituency than the old comsymp fellow travelers ever were or even thought about being. These are people who literally regard Kremlin-owned RT.com as the most reliable news source in the world.

re: #189 Vicious Babushka

Yep. I guess in a way, I sort of grew up with serial killers as part of my consciousness. When I was a kid in L.A., there was the Hillside Stranglers; living in the Pacific Northwest, for many years we had the Green River Killer, and a couple of others. A cousin of mine was an investigator on the Zodiac case, and my father lived across the street from the vacant lot where the most unfortunate Elizabeth Short - the “Black Dahlia” - was found: he was one of the first people on the scene when her body was discovered on that Wednesday morning. He said he’d never forget that as long as he lived. Of course, Ms. Short wasn’t the victim of a serial killer to the best of anyone’s knowledge - she fell prey to an utterly sadistic maniac by all accounts. But I know it haunted my dad, as he’d told the LAPD he’d heard a car stop for a few minutes in front of that lot across the street. He didn’t think anything of it at that moment, until the body was discovered a short time later.

GG stretches this:

You, though, have known for quite a while that these officials haven’t been straight with us - and yet you weren’t fully open until after the Snowden leak. Do you regret that you didn’t say something sooner?
There are very significant limits [on what you can and cannot say], and they are very cumbersome and unwieldy. If you want to play a watchdog role, you try to work within the rules. This is a sensitive subject. A lot of people have just said to me, “Well, you feel so strongly about [these issues] - when you knew this, why didn’t you just go to the floor of the United States Senate and just, you know, read it all [into the record]?” And, of course, anybody who does this kind of work thinks a lot about that. You think about it all the time. I can see why plenty of people would criticize me - progressives and others. I can understand why plenty of people who have views similar to mine would say they would have done it differently.

“Neither my father, his lawyer Bruce Fein, nor his wife Mattie Fein represent me in any way. None of them have been or are involved in my current situation, and this will not change in the future. I ask journalists to understand that they do not possess any special knowledge regarding my situation or future plans, and not to exploit the tragic vacuum of my father’s emotional compromise for the sake of tabloid news.”
