MIT News: Encryption Is Less Secure Than We Thought

Technology • Views: 23,735

The problem, Médard explains, is that information-theoretic analyses of secure systems have generally used the wrong notion of entropy. They relied on so-called Shannon entropy, named after the founder of information theory, Claude Shannon, who taught at MIT from 1956 to 1978.

Shannon entropy is based on the average probability that a given string of bits will occur in a particular type of digital file. In a general-purpose communications system, that’s the right type of entropy to use, because the characteristics of the data traffic will quickly converge to the statistical averages. Although Shannon’s seminal 1948 paper dealt with cryptography, it was primarily concerned with communication, and it used the same measure of entropy in both discussions.

But in cryptography, the real concern isn’t with the average case but with the worst case. A codebreaker needs only one reliable correlation between the encrypted and unencrypted versions of a file in order to begin to deduce further correlations. In the years since Shannon’s paper, information theorists have developed other notions of entropy, some of which give greater weight to improbable outcomes. Those, it turns out, offer a more accurate picture of the problem of codebreaking.

When Médard, Duffy and their students used these alternate measures of entropy, they found that slight deviations from perfect uniformity in source files, which seemed trivial in the light of Shannon entropy, suddenly loomed much larger. The upshot is that a computer turned loose to simply guess correlations between the encrypted and unencrypted versions of a file would make headway much faster than previously expected.

“It’s still exponentially hard, but it’s exponentially easier than we thought,” Duffy says. One implication is that an attacker who simply relied on the frequencies with which letters occur in English words could probably guess a user-selected password much more quickly than was previously thought. “Attackers often use graphics processors to distribute the problem,” Duffy says. “You’d be surprised at how quickly you can guess stuff.”

So which version of entropy was this XKCD referring to?

On the other hand, the need for raw, brute force processor time remains. Unless you have a lot of bots, or a massive linked system available, this remains outside of the realm of anything but governments or rogue elements with lots of resources (cash).

Worrying? Yes. Worried that my li’l old I-Mac is a target? Meh.

If they’ve broken into my house, what’s stopping them from just carting off my computer and cracking it at their leisure? It’s not exactly like I lost my wallet, there’s nobody I can really call and say “Hey, can you go ahead and cancel my computer?”

There’s a point here: Solidarity Is for White Women Takes Over Twitter

blogher.com

Much of the complaints have to do with class as well. As a feminist, I ran into a lot of that in the 60s women’s movement, since I was a working class woman w/kids, and always felt more kinship with minority women with whom I had more in common as far as my own situation (single mom, level of education, work) was concerned. Minority women’s voices must be heard as frequently as white women’s—no, they must become a leading force in women’s issues. Feminism just isn’t about being a CEO or politician and having “access”, money and power.

Bouie is trying to garner sympathy. He was in the wrong.
WOC were giving examples of how we have not benefitted from the Women’s Movement, and, in many cases our voices have deliberately been silenced.

After reading his TL, well, should I explain what she means?
It’s not bigotry.

24 SteveMcGazi  Fri, Aug 16, 2013 8:48:41pm

I use passwords that are based on home addresses of people I used to know. Not even friends or relatives, just so and so who lived a couple blocks away, then I would keep a readme file with clues. For example from my old business, one line of that would read:

Not quite a post it on the screen, but I would think that would be close enough to impossible.

I’ll do it anyway.
No one necessarily has an issue with inter-racial relationships.
Love is love.
But there certain black men, my FIL for example, who view being with a white woman as a badge of honor. A prize to be had, and they are the winners.
They then use it as a cudgle to bash black women.
To my face its been said, ” I’ll never date a black woman. You are too angry and aggressive, etc.”
Note: I wasn’t angry until he told me I was…
Then, if we show resentment( because that shit hurts to the core on so many levels), we’re just jealous, and are told how we should behave, and that our thinking is backwards.

Whether he meant to or not, this is how Mr. Bouie came across, hence Ms. Bogad’s response.
I hope my explanation is clear.

Been there. Had a girlfriend in the army who’s dad was a doctor. Serious upper middle class suburban family - she liked the same music I did, the Clash, The Ramones, Depeche Mode, The Replacements, Husker Du, etc. but not hip-hop. The black guys in the training unit (this was at Ft Huachuca for Military Intelligence School) never wanted to accept that she’d rather hang with me because she had more in common culturally with me than with some guy from a larger urban area. It was a rather interesting real world lesson for the this lefty.

Hope she’s doing well where ever she is tonight…

But wait, it gets worse:

Recently, Golden Dawn has signaled it would like to go global, and has opened offices in Germany and Australia. A website has appeared claiming to be the hub for the group’s New York City office.

“Nightline’s” repeated email requests for interviews from Golden Dawn members were met with an angry “No.”

“You can blame your fellow mainstream media cohorts for that, who do nothing but shamelessly slander us,” one email response to “Nightline” said.

But as Georgousis’ film shows, Golden Dawn sees the blame for Greece’s woes spreading far beyond its shores. The party claims the economic crisis in Greece is not just caused by immigrants in Athens, but in Chicago and “especially New York,” Georgousis said.

“They keep posting articles that, ‘it’s the Jewish capital that has brought Greece to this point, which is located in New York,’” he said.

Though I seriously doubt those bastards are going to show up in NYC. If they do, they’re going to learn just how bad it can be to be confronted with a pissed-off NYPD.

Howdy! Got a great tip for you tonight..Hell..It’s Friday night.. Have any of you watched brain games on NatGeo? Oh Crap! Friday night watching geeky shows…
It was great..That show how the brain works or sees things..Tonight was great..
How do you know a fake smile from a real smile? They both look the same even if overdone.. They showed all these pictures of people doing a fake smile and a real smile..They all looked the damn same! All the times it would really be NICE TO KN
A real smile..mmmmm. How do you know? It’s stupid easy..A fake smile is controlled by the a mechanical area of the brain.. It can be an art form in disguise of a smile that could melt your heart..One little area controls the smile..Like what actors use to convince you of some one they are know.. It is an Art.
You can’t tell.. But wait..yes you can with side by side picture proof..Because a real smile is controlled by an emotional part and a mechanical part of the brain. A person’s eyes will always crinkle during a real heartfealt smile. You can’t help when your eyes crowfoot or crinkle with a real emotional smile..And when they showed the pictures side by side again you could see the difference by looking at the eyes. It blew me away to watch the studies.. So now you know something tonight..About a smile..
It really would have been nice to know this little bit of data with all the girls I’ve dated over the years..Like in my 20’s…::)

How was Bouie in the wrong, this was her tweet that started it all:

I guess I’m not getting it, because it looks like Bouie made an honest attempt at a discussion and had his personal life attacked by what appears to be an incredibly passive aggressive Bogado. Bouie made some very cogent points and accurately points to real causes, and in no way did he attack anybody over a hashtag.

In that conversation Bogado literally blames white women for the results of gentrification, and proposes this remedy:

It should have been mentioned that she’s quite literally calling for some species of segregation, that wealthy white people should have the common decency to keep to their own neighborhoods. Maybe Bouie is right and gentrification is a complex issue, that one can blame society in general and market forces for being racist, but that wealthy people moving into poor ethnic neighborhoods aren’t individually imposing anything other than a desire to live where they want to live. He was right to point out that this kind of simplism doesn’t even begin to address root causes, and for that crime he had his personal sex life used as a cudgel against him. That’s kind of fucked up.

What she means is that some want it both ways.
In one respect, people think its cool to move into gentrified areas. On the other hand, they have disdain for the people already living there.
In the end, because these are the hip places to live, the original inhabitants get priced out.
You have to understand, #solidarityisforwhitewomen was stressful. Instead of listening to what was being said, people became defensive. It was very emotional, and in some cases, combative.

Context is key. As I said, whether he meant to or not, he came off as either being willfully obtuse, or that other guy I spoke of earlier.

“Strange Fruit”
1939

Billie Holiday, jazz singer, circa 1930s. In 1939, blues and jazz singer Billie Holiday performed at a New York city night spot called Café Society. The song she sang that evening was unlike any other that had come before it. “Strange Fruit” was its title, and the lyrics, which appear below, described the lynching of black people, a savage practice which had occurred in several areas of the U.S. “Strange Fruit” was not popular fare, but eventually, with Billie Holiday’s voice and presence, it permeated mainstream culture in an unsettling way, becoming a song of protest and a song that got attention.

If I’m understanding that article from The Independent correctly - and I’m not even remotely claiming I understand the nuances of the law - News Corp could be found by a British Court to be, in essence, a criminal enterprise, somewhat analogous to RICO statutes in the US, which in turn could lead to the FCC pulling Fox News Channel’s broadcasting license; or such is the concern of the News Corp corporate honchos in the United States.

Imagine that happening sometime in 2015! Just in time for the 2016 elections. Indeed, pass that trash-can-sized bag of popcorn over here.

FoxNews is just one part of the empire. Fox Broadcasting Company division owns 28 licensed broadcast stations based in 21 US cities.

There was a major restructuring almost two months ago. Technically “News Corp.” is just the publishing arm now, newspapers and books. Actually they created a brand new entity named News Corp and split off the publishing assets into it. Almost everything else including the cable division (FX, FoxNews, etc) along with the broadcast network and channels were kept under the original “News Corporation,” which was renamed to “21st Century Fox.”

How strangely the mind works during sleep. Dreamed we were having very odd weather (guess that’s on my mind) and looked up into the sky and saw—2 suns. It just appeared suddenly, which is ridiculous, of course. We may be very unique in that we have only one star in our system.

Those kinds of systems, with 2 or more suns, are out there. NASA has discovered distant planets w/2 suns: space.com

re: #70 Justanotherhuman

For a while it was thought that binary stars were uncommon, but astronomers soon realized they were quite common. Then the pendulum swung in the other direction and some thought that single stars like ours were the minority. We now know that there are very many more red dwarfs than other stars, and because their systems have less mass then many of them would be single stars.

Your dream is an interesting one (perhaps you watched Star Wars too many times?)

re: #72 freetoken

I haven’t seen a “Star Wars” movie since the first one. : ) I’m just mystified by the weather we’re having here in NC, I think. Today’s high has been revised from 69 to 66 deg and the next 3 days are more rain, even though it will be 75 tomorrow and 80 on Mon (predicted).

I just want summer back and things normal. : )

74 freetoken  Sat, Aug 17, 2013 5:27:37am

re: #73 Justanotherhuman

Yesterday was our first warm day in quite a while. This has been a very cool summer so far, but there has been some cold water off the coast.

Recently it has been colder than average in the Arctic, record warm in the Far East, and much above average in Antarctica.

These things happen, and are influenced greatly by the flow of water around the planet. This is why yearly temperature variations are not very indicative of long term climate changes, something which is intentionally overlooked by the know-nothings.

BTW, binary star systems are tricky things for planets. The question of whether there is an orbit that would allow for a planet to have life in such a system is one which is interesting. Long term stable orbits would be difficult in systems with relatively close stars, except for planets that would have very, very long orbits (think Pluto-like), or be very close (think Mercury.) However, in a binary system with a red dwarf and a giant star with sufficient separation you could have a planet close to the red dwarf that wouldn’t be too hot. However, giant stars don’t have long lives. Another option would be to have two very close stars of sufficient brightness that a distant planet could orbit the center of gravity and still get enough energy to melt water.

A lot of Pop Sci-Fi (like Star Wars) ignore these difficulties.

Our currently closest stars present a test case. The question has been whether the small star Proxima Centauri is indeed gravitationally bound to the Alpha Centauri AB double system. The AB system probably couldn’t have a life-supportable planet in a stable orbit, but Proxima could. Problem is, Proxima is a flare star, which might be a problem for anything living on one of its planets (and we know it doesn’t have large ones, but it could, probably does, have small ones.)

75 Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut  Sat, Aug 17, 2013 5:48:52am

The main aspect is just the distance apart of the binary stars. If they’re close together, then for most planets it’ll be not that different from a single-star system.

re: #67 Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut

It’s not just that, though paid maternity leave is a big freaking deal. It’s disgusting that this is even an issue. But wait! There’s more…

Let’s just say you’re a mom who has been home for awhile, maybe raising a few kids spaced a few years apart, or maybe you have a child with a disability so you’ve had to be home for their entire school years. And maybe you’re not well off enough financially to go to school while you do all this, BUT you do manage to not let your brain rot and find the time to read and sort of keep up an informal education and maybe teach yourself some basic skills along the way.

Go try to find a job after that. Even a shitty job. This country spouts a lot of bullshit about motherhood and family values, but when push comes to shove, it’s a big fat lie. I swear to god I’ve had people ask me, “so what have you been doing all this time?” when I tell them I’ve been a full time Mom for almost 20yrs. Oh nothing you asshat, go call your Mom and ask her what the hell she did to raise you, and then apologize for being a jerk to someone else’s Mom today. Gah!

Anyone in a position to hire and fire people ought to be aware that being a mom is not being Peg Bundy and eating bon-bons on the couch all damned day. That you learn to multi task efficiently, organize time and space like it’s second nature, you deal with people- sometimes very stubborn and difficult people- all day long and still manage to get shit done, you become adept at conflict resolution, you can spot waste in a budget and make a dollar stretch til it begs for mercy, you have compassion without being a pushover, the list of positives is quite long. And yes, there are shitty moms out there, but most of us are not. It SHOULD count on your resume and it doesn’t. I’m 53, even if I go back to school now and get a degree, who the hell is going to hire me with that pretty new diploma? I’ve been looking for part time retail work for months,I have 25 yrs of retail experience in all aspects except upper management. Over 35 applications, not a SINGLE call back. It’s not just my age, it’s also the giant hole in my employment history, even though I describe what I have been doing much like I just did above.

The one thing I didn’t do that I wish I would have was keep in touch with all my old bosses over the years so I’d still have them as job references. I have no idea where any of those people are now, some of them I can’t remember the names of. Some of those companies aren’t even around anymore. Until women(and men, lots more dads are staying home now- which is awesome, but they will face these issues later too- though I’m not sure to the same degree women do) are valued as mothers overall any bullshit I hear about valuing motherhood from anyone is a big bunch of crap.

Yet another log on the pile of “Food Stamps are something that Republican districts benefit from more”

bloomberg.com

The following is a fucking lie, because I frequent a supermarket that is used by a lot of food stamp recipients and I’ve never seen this (plus, the parking lot is full of not Cadillacs, but older cars, like mine, which is 16 yrs old):

“Tim Charlton, pastor of the Sugar Camp Baptist Church in Booneville, said he’s seen food stamp recipients in checkout lines with 10 or more cases of Pepsi in their carts. People then sell the soda at a discount to others and use the cash to pay other bills or for drugs, he said.”

Yes, I’ve seen people buying mfg’d boxed and frozen food, and other items I wouldn’t particularly buy, but that isn’t because they’re “gaming” the system, it’s because they either don’t have any nutrition knowledge or they simply can’t cook from scratch.

But the Rs in NC are getting their way in cutting off food stamps (at least for a while) since some have been waiting months for their benefits because the computer system implemented to “speed things up” called NC Fast is not working. The food banks are overwhelmed because of this delay. Even this report has it wrong, because my g-son has not received any for him and his child since 6/15, even though he has been recertified: projects.newsobserver.com I have spent every cent of cash I have left from my SS check on groceries and it’s getting close to desperation time as any “reserves” I had built up over time are being decimated fast.

Not only that, how does he know that FS were used? I’ve seen debit/credit cards with the same kind of flag design on them that the EBT cards have. For someone who calls himself a pastor, he is despicable because he makes assumptions about something he knows nothing about. He’s probably listening to the same kind of gossip that Reagan spread about “welfare queens”.

Unless he’s constantly behind people who announce, “Hey, I’m using food stamps to buy these here drinks!” or overhear them otherwise indicating they’re using EBT, and sees the transaction go down he thinks he knows about, he’s just full of shit.

Yeah, that’s one of the things that I thought was kind of hinky.

Soda is so cheap to begin with — at the local megamarket, a NON-sale priced 12 pack of soda runs $4.50.

*If* you bought 10 cases of soda, that’s 45 bucks. Assuming you sell it back to Joe Weasel at a discount, you’d get what, maybe $30 bucks?

Believe me, I speak from experience — about the only thing $30 is going to get you from your friendly neighborhood drug dealer is “Come back when you have more money.”

Not commercial, it’s better :) Mid-60’s PLA production that went into a warehouse for 20 years (because the PLA was already using their _other_ Type 56) before a fast refurb and sale in the US. I never use anything other than the stock 10 round mag on an SKS. It’s more reliable than any of the add-ons and doesn’t look as scary to non-gun people. It’s a tossup between a peep sight or a long eye relief scout mount scope, though. I tend to prefer iron sights so the peep is more likely but my eyes are getting older…

Ground. That’s why I’m leaving it in the sporter stock rather than restoring it. Someone did a good job fitting a Remington 700 BDL stock to it and then left the rest of the metal alone. Original sights, etc. Sweet shooting accurate rifle with a really good condition barrel - chrome lining is good for that :)

Make no mistake-The primary motive in gun legislation here is not really safety, it’s to make it harder and harder to make use of the guns they can not take.

California is anti gun first safety second.

I used to hunt deer in the Upper Peninsula, where I learned to hate tag alders. The best deer gun up there was a 12 gauge pump (buckshot, slug, buckshot).

Down here in Texas, especially west of town in the Hill Country, you better have a 300-yard rifle. 7.62 NATO or 7.62 x 54R at least.

Minor correction.

I should probably stay out of this, but oh well.

I saw @aurabogado get in a very bitter argument with someone over political tactics at the end of July. Even though I agreed with her as far as the tactics go, she got very unreasonable in her tweets to people she disagreed with.

I followed that conversation more closely than the one yesterday, and I know the #solidarityisforwhitewomen hashtag was an emotional thing, and Bouie should have been on eggshells if he wasn’t, but I don’t think Aura Bogado is very good at having an emotional discussion. She doesn’t play fair.

Pet peeve-In California guns that have been made for years and passed national and military tests for safe operation and reliability have to be re tested model by model all over again. This includes minor changes on guns that have been out and used for decades like changing the sights. The SF/Berkeley/ Sacramento axis of far left politics tends to dominate the regulations and the discourse. Interesting especially because the accident and misfire rate from design flaws or part failures has essentially been zero incidents over decades.

Yup, IIRC that would be all about our assault weapon ban. I don’t like the blanket ban. It was severe enough to interfere with law enforcement purchases. Like when some cops borrowed some during the NH bank heist and epic gun battle. I’d like to see a qualification regime like the FAA has for pilots. Anyway…

Back when I was really advocating hard for gun rights here California (90’s)we thought we had a deal with the state. The deal was that instant background check hardware would get funded by gun groups and owners. And then we would have good positive control over purchases. Suddenly the background check became a “cooling off period” and we got screwed.

California came to us gun groups for guidance on a mandatory safety test before purchase of a gun. Which was done We liked the idea. We were assured the instructors certified by police, military and the then sane NRA would be accepted to give the test and our credentials would mean we did not have to take the test. Neither of those promises were kept.

I could go on but if California impinged that hard on any other amendment we would have far wider protests. When us gun owners protest, we are instantly dismissed in the legislature as “never minds it’s just those gun nuts”. Yeah gun nuts that backed their safety regs and dug in on some unreasonable regs.

The weight and barrel harmonics (it vibrates differently when extended, folded or missing). The sights are tuned to it being there and you need completely different ones if you remove it. That’s why the FSU stopped making the M38 and went to the M44 (and eventually SKS-45) instead.

That was the old federal AWB, nothing wrong with bayonets. Cal State AWB traded the bayonet mount for a single feature test and added in thumbhole stocks, and the 91-30 is a bolt action so no AWB ever applied to it. The current CA AWB law also exempts rimfire rifles, but there’s a bill pending in the legislature that would ban any semiauto rifle that accepts a detachable magazine.

What the regulators willfully never considered is that when a part breaks on a gun or it has a design flaw the far far and away most common out come is it won’t fire, or won’t fire again if it was a shot that broke it. Or let’s take the Glock pistol. That is one of the less safe guns to operate**. One chief at Beverly Hills PD swore to a group of us at a range that gun would never ever be authorized for his cops. It will fire even if the slide is not fully forward. Big flaw there. The case splits and the gun blows the bottom off the magazine and the unfired rounds and springs land at your feet. The bullet is likely stuck in the barrel. If you don’t clear that and shoot again it blows.

**If you hold it wrong you would be injured. Maybe badly.

California passed it in their “safety & design testing”.

Actually, the North Hollywood bank shootout was used as justification for California’s gun ban law, even though the rifles used by the robbers were already illegal. The two AKs were Chinese Type 56 rifles that had been smuggled in, thus they had never been in the US legally and no gun ban would have effected them. The HK-91 used by one of the robbers had been illegally modified to fire full-auto, a major federal crime carrying a 10 year prison sentence.

Hence the law used a very poor justification to already questionable ends.

I hate pistoles. If I was a magician, they would all turn into piles of dust.

Actually, the North Hollywood bank shootout was used as justification for California’s gun NEXT ban law, even though the rifles used by the robbers were already illegal.

Hence the law used a very poor justification to already questionable ends.

Fixed I think.
The next law IIRC. Just checked Google and the bank heist was Feb 28 1997. The Brady bill AWB passed in ‘93. California passed its own so when the Brady bill lapsed Ca kept the law. 10 rd limit etc.

I still can’t figure out how your state got so cursed with so many self-serving College Republican types. Most of the local news commentary sections I see across the country are just populist old folks and a handful of informed liberals.

Part of the problem is that Madison does have a good number of vocal leftists who regard all right-of-center ideas as dogshit and their defenders as dupes, shills, or demons. Not the majority of left-wing people there, not anywhere close, but enough to give any pushback by the outnumbered Republicans in the area a “Well Screw You!” edge.

re: #310 austin_blue

This one’s for you:

Heavy Bombers Practice Ship Plinking

ugust 17, 2013: The B-52 recently became the second American heavy bomber to have the Sniper ATP targeting pod installed. Five years ago the B-1B got Sniper pods and soon used them in combat for the first time. These pods enable the aircraft crew to see, in great detail, what’s happening on the ground, even when the aircraft is flying at 6.8 kilometers (20,000 feet) altitude. For example, the pod users can tell if someone down there is dressed as a man or a woman, or is carrying a weapon. Heavy bombers can also use the pods for attacking ships at sea.

Two years ago a B-1B successfully used laser guided JDAM bombs against moving naval targets. These tests involved the B-1B using its Sniper targeting pod to put the laser beam on the target. The JDAMs homed on the laser light reflecting off the moving target ships. The B-1B thus became the latest of many air force heavy bombers that have been equipped to serve as maritime patrol and anti-ship aircraft. Back during World War II, thousands of B-17 and B-24 bombers (and many two engine bombers) were used to patrol and control vast ocean areas. Late in the Cold War the B-52 was active in this area but that ended in the 1990s. But in the last decade this maritime activity has been restored. For example, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has used B-52s to check out suspicious merchant ships approaching North America, often when the ships are still about 2,000 kilometers from the coast. The B-52s take pictures of the ship, and transmit that back to DHS. A B-52 can do this while taking part in a training exercise. B-52s have a lot of jobs they can to while over the oceans.

The new usefulness of heavy bombers at sea is largely the result of technological changes in maritime reconnaissance. This includes things like the introduction, and combining, of lightweight search radars and targeting pods. With the targeting pod, you can stay high and far away (over twenty kilometers) and still get a close look. Thus a B-52 with a targeting pod is an excellent naval reconnaissance aircraft, as is the more recent B-1B. The Sniper ATP pod is also used on the F-15, F-16, F-18 and A-10 aircraft.

Subsequently, an undercover agent practically camped out in my living room for several months, pretending to be a boyfriend/lover of a 14-year old neighbor whose older sister I’d befriended.

Many attempts at intimidation/entrapment included that agent banging that 14-year-old in my locked bathroom, an ABC store transaction, a gun in my car, a break-in to my car, and hits of LSD planted in a document from my employer and then hidden in my sofa.

I’m now inclined to believe all that crap was really about mathematics and encryption.

The thing is, none of it - not last month’s deal, not Obama’s 2010 reforms - mattered that much. No doubt, seeing rates double permanently would genuinely have sucked for many students, so it was nice to avoid that. And yes, it was theoretically beneficial when Obama took banks and middlemen out of the federal student-loan game. But the dirty secret of American higher education is that student-loan interest rates are almost irrelevant. It’s not the cost of the loan that’s the problem, it’s the principal - the appallingly high tuition costs that have been soaring at two to three times the rate of inflation, an irrational upward trajectory eerily reminiscent of skyrocketing housing prices in the years before 2008.

I think we should take things a step farther: I’m thinking of those air-launched cruise missiles we had build originally to carry nuclear warheads by that modified during the Clinton Administration to carry conventional warheads. Those had the same accuracy as Tomahawks but had a warhead with twice the explosive payload.

We should build some of those to the updated standards that let Tomahawks target both land and sea targets. The sight of a B-52 on patrol with enough firepower to sink a task group from 200 miles away would give China some pause.

Wow, sounds like an abuser looking for a legal excuse.

Honestly, I’ve thought a lot about the “slapping” issue. It is, technically, a physical assault. I don’t like physical stuff and wouldn’t advise it.

I also heard men say it was exactly what they needed to “snap” them out of their inappropriate erections—when their advances weren’t welcomed.

I also have to wonder about “manly men” going to the police because they were “slapped”? Sounds rather lame to me.

Having said all that, the writer in your link did not respond in anyway appropriately. I have difficult time thinking a judge would think that the man was threatened or even physically harmed by a “slap” by a women that was smaller and weaker than the man. His response was not in proportion to the threat (if there really was one).

Thus, my first sentence. I think he was looking for an excuse. He is an abuser.

He is “so sure” of his actions as well. This indicates to me that he was writing a script —setting the scene. He has a power and control issue.

I has a sad.

The local university’s cheer leader squad was holding a car wash. A dozen attractive girls dressed in Bikini tops and shorts gently and wetly stroking my car. What could possibly be wrong with that?

My wife said the car wasn’t dirty enough.

Did you promise her that your car would be dirtier next time? /

My thoughts exactly. Do you think it would be worthwhile for me to respond, saying something along the lines of what you’ve said? He’ll rage and flame at me, of course, and I have no hopes of changing him since he sounds extremely twisted anyway. My bigger concern are all the people lurking on that thread, potentially left with the impression his behavior is acceptable (because no one is calling him out on it)

Yes, I think he should be called-out on his actions. If the rest of us don’t flag behavior as inappropriate and possibly criminal, these types of people will continue to get away with it.

Too many people think this way, and many have been elected to positions of great power.

Respond. Present him with comndemnation and get him to rage. Let those who might nod and post sympathetically see the monster that lies beneath. Not all of them will learn, but will.

398 FemNaziBitch  Sat, Aug 17, 2013 12:55:29pm

I paged this article a week or so ago.

I think it shows an important step in reducing violence and making for a better world. We need to be aware and stop the abusers.

They won’t stop and simple control issues turn into horrible crime and heartache the longer the abuser is unchecked.

Do not remain silent. There are a myriad of ways we can show disapproval to co-workers, friends and neighbors. Non-verbal communication can work wonders when in polite company.

Here’s what I have written so far - go ahead and post, or change it?

Technically, a slap constitutes an assault, but assuming the incident proceeded exactly as you described, your response was not in proportion to the threat (if there really was one).

Had she gone to the police, that “one hell of a black eye” would have been one hell of a piece of evidence. Would a judge think you were threatened or even physically harmed by a “slap” by a women smaller and weaker than you? What you did sounds exactly like excessive use of force and was quite possibly a criminal act.

I don’t know about others reading this thread, but I find it deeply disturbing that you appear to be proud of your actions. When you “laid her out on the floor”, she could have hit her head in such a way to cause paralysis or even death. Then where would you be?

Trust me, I want to say that and much worse, but I have to respond in a way that’s as calm and measured as possible. Like I said, I fully expect him to rant and rage (perhaps saying, you don’t know me so STFU blah blah blah), but then again, that will only make him look even worse to others who happen to be reading.

What you did was not the action of a man, it was the action of child. You had no need ‘lay her out’ and your pride in doing so exposes the obvious insecurities and fear you feel interacting with women. I suggest you get help.

look at these numbers.

REALLY, stop and really process this information.

Then, think about who these women are —individual human beings.

Think about the children who are witnessing this violence.

Domestic Violence is the Crime that Causes Other Crime,
it induces trauma and mental illness, low school performance and most of our other social and personal ills and economic ills.

WE, as individuals and as a community, cannot afford to pass-the-buck.

Don’t word it that way. “disproportionate response” is line too easily deliberately mischaracterized, and he might not rage but instead dismiss you with “You’re just a left-wing weenie, man up.” or some such.

416 FemNaziBitch  Sat, Aug 17, 2013 1:23:44pm

I am obliged to say that survivors of domestic violence and rape in the State of Illinois (and most other states, I think) are eligible for help. If anyone feels they are having issues, call your local Domestic Violence Shelter/Rape Crisis Center. They should be able to help you or give you a referral.

Even if the abuse was decades in the past.

Re my comments on Ron Paul, Vatican Agent, I’ve found the trigger for the most recent derpnami in a passing Freep header. Our esteemed ex-Represenstative, ex-obstetrician, ex-newsletterer is scheduled as top banana at a Fatima: The Path to Peace conference in September. The conference is run by a group founded by a suspended priest. Suspended for “shit-too-crazy-for the-faithful”, as in a decades-long secret treaty between Rome and Moscow. There will be a parade.

re: #330 Dark_Falcon

That the B-17 and B-24 were good at that role is essentially because they were designed for it. 1930s US defense policy were partially developed around having long-range maritime patrol bombers that could haul 2000 lbs of bombs a couple thousand miles.

(Which is one reason why in comparison to the WW2 British strategic bombers the US designs had lower bomb load capabilities. Less of a bomb truck design.)
