NYT: Greenwald’s Partner Was Transporting Snowden’s Stolen Documents

Courier
World • Views: 29,217

The New York Times report on today’s huge libertarian freak-out has a very interesting detail, completely left out of the reports by the Guardian and Glenn Greenwald: Britain Detains the Partner of a Reporter Tied to Leaks.

Mr. Miranda was in Berlin to deliver documents related to Mr. Greenwald’s investigation into government surveillance to Ms. Poitras, Mr. Greenwald said. Ms. Poitras, in turn, gave Mr. Miranda different documents to pass to Mr. Greenwald. Those documents, which were stored on encrypted thumb drives, were confiscated by airport security, Mr. Greenwald said. All of the documents came from the trove of materials provided to the two journalists by Mr. Snowden. The British authorities seized all of his electronic media — including video games, DVDs and data storage devices — and did not return them, Mr. Greenwald said.

That’s correct — Glenn Greenwald’s partner was helping Greenwald and Laura Poitras exchange documents stolen by Edward Snowden. He was basically a mule.

And note: Mr. Miranda is not a journalist, and has no journalistic protections, according to Glenn Greenwald:

“This is obviously a serious, radical escalation of what they are doing. He is my partner. He is not even a journalist.”

Wasn’t I just arguing with someone who said it was “speculation” that Greenwald gave the docs to his partner?

Greenwald, Assange, Poitras, Snowden, the rest of the super friends and their significant others should be granted free access anywhere on the globe and should be able to settle all bills due with their own script.

To be honest, it’s the NYT, so it’s speculation of a higher order.

In other, several-hours-ago news:

Open Thread about ANYTHING BUT Glenn Greenwald
A lot of national security and political commentators and reporters on Twitter have what they call the Greenwald 24 Hour Rule, as coined by Bob Cesca.- Whenever something is written by or about Glenn Greenwald, it’s almost always wise to wait 24 hours to see what the truth really is.

Smrt.

The problem, IMHO, is that if you raise enough stink enough people will want to know what the stink (documents) are about. The next bruhaha will be “what was in the documents?”

re: #81 FemNaziBitch

On the whole, I view it as a reflection that we, the American society, still have a difficult time adjusting to our role in the world and how that is changing.

Few Americans allow, publicly, their officials to admit to the horrors that the US has visited upon others (see for example Romney’s statements in debates about the role of the US), while at the same time we don’t put into perspective how rottenly people all over the world treat others.

And we also don’t want to hear about how our role on the world stage has to diminish a bit - this is why the neocons can pounce so quickly on Obama and why the President has seemed so reluctant to close Gitmo and like, because he knows that change has to come very slowly and incrementally because our political system can’t allow for any other way without over-reacting.

Ultimately we all get to partake in a great game of pretending, and when something so horrible as the 9/11 events happen we are forced out of pretense, for a short while. It’s discomforting.

All of this umbrage over the NSA is fallout from 9/11 and our collective reaction to the threat of terrorism. But to stop the NSA from doing what it is doing would mean we then accept that terrorists will be able to use electronic communications to plot, even while in the US… and we can’t do that.

I thought less a fake than a cautious ‘test run’. If they have stuff per the NYT report, that’s a ‘no’.

I guess so. I just I suppose see this as another way for GG to make this whole story more about him and less about the actual subject matter. It’s LOOK WHAT THE THUGS DID TO MY POOR PARTNER and ignore the nuance that his partner was in fact carrying these documents. Either way though, I think it’s your classic fauxrage.

In the early hours of his Very Bad Day, Miranda had to be thinking of how his homeboy Brazilian police would handle it. A very shaken lad, I suspect.

Greenwald said it himself — “not a journalist”:

nytimes.com

“What’s amazing is this law, called the Terrorism Act, gives them a right to detain and question you about your activities with a terrorist organization or your possible involvement in or knowledge of a terrorism plot,” Mr. Greenwald said. “The only thing they were interested in was N.S.A. documents and what I was doing with Laura Poitras. It’s a total abuse of the law.” He added: “This is obviously a serious, radical escalation of what they are doing. He is my partner. He is not even a journalist.

I actually and don’t laugh but I got into time travel because of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. For some reason, I rented that at Errols instead of Back to the Future but hey I was watching George Carlin before I even knew what the seven words you can’t say on television were and I may have learned some pick-up skills from So-greats and Billy the Kid as well as how to rock the water park from Napoleon. My video game series of choice is the MEtal Gear series though. Great story, game play, and infinitely thought provoking. I still have my old data from ‘99.

I’d actually liken the Pauls’ relationship with certain progressives to the old urban legend about the Mexican Pet.
- He’s a dog! (progressive)
- No, my boy your dog here is actually a rat (right wing nut)
- No he’s not!

Also, back home in the US, from the developer who nearly had the crane collapse during Hurricane Sandy is another story of scuminess.

NYC condo planned with separate entrances for rich, poor people.

re: #58 Charles Johnson

From the New York Times’ profile of Poitras:

Poitras was not Snowden’s first choice as the person to whom he wanted to leak thousands of N.S.A. documents. In fact, a month before contacting her, he reached out to Greenwald, who had written extensively and critically about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the erosion of civil liberties in the wake of 9/11. Snowden anonymously sent him an e-mail saying he had documents he wanted to share, and followed that up with a step-by-step guide on how to encrypt communications, which Greenwald ignored. Snowden then sent a link to an encryption video, also to no avail.

“It’s really annoying and complicated, the encryption software,” Greenwald said as we sat on his porch during a tropical drizzle.

In other words, Greenwald can’t follow instructions and is technologically illiterate.
