Glenn Greenwald, Super Villain: The UK Is Going to Be Sorry

Glenn Greenwald is in a fine rage today, spewing threats at Britain to publish even more damaging documents: Glenn Greenwald to Publish UK Secrets After Britain Detains Partner.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 19 (Reuters) - The journalist who first published secrets leaked by fugitive former U.S. intelligence agency contractor Edward Snowden vowed on Monday to publish more documents and said Britain will be “sorry” for detaining his partner for nine hours. …

Greenwald, a columnist for Britain’s the Guardian newspaper who is based in Rio de Janeiro, said the detention was an attempt to intimidate him for publishing documents leaked by Snowden disclosing U.S. surveillance of global internet communications.

Snowden, who has been granted asylum by Russia, gave Greenwald from 15,000 to 20,000 documents with details of the U.S. National Security Agency’s surveillance programs.

“I will be far more aggressive in my reporting from now. I am going to publish many more documents. I am going to publish things on England too. I have many documents on England’s spy system. I think they will be sorry for what they did,” Greenwald, speaking in Portuguese, told reporters at Rio’s airport where he met Miranda upon his return to Brazil.

Greenwald can pipe his whole legion of children out of the village, and I doubt we’ll lose a vote.

Here’s something I don’t get:

Let’s suppose I, a non-journalist, was friends with Edward Snowden. Let’s further suppose he gave me the classified docs to take back to Brazil via Heathrow—just to hold. UK officials receive a tip that I’m passing through and I may have the documents. Would anyone bat an eyelash if they stopped and searched me? Does the fact that a journalist is involved inoculate both the journalist and his associates from gov’t’s attempts to recover the documents? Does a journalist’s involvement absolve him from any liability for (I presume illegally) possessing classified material?

If he was being interviewed by a Brazilian reporter, it’s not really weird to give the interview in Portuguese. And it’s not that hard to translate, so if he wants to claim an idiomatic defense, Portuguese speakers will be able to say if it is or isn’t true.

It’d take a very different translation to read a declaration that “I’m going to publish on England too” as anything other than a tit-for-tat threat.

Also, for those who don’t know, Brazil has had a huge beef with England specifically over terrorism-related matters after a totally innocent Brazilian guy Jean Charles de Menezes, who was shot seven times in the head in a case of mistaken identity.

Sovereign World Citizen.

And see, I have some sympathy for that ideology. I’m a post-nationalist: I’d love it if the world was unified, if we didn’t have nations anymore but actually all felt together in one enterprise. But weirdly, I think that means that we have to get there eventually, not smash everything down and replace it right now, because that wouldn’t work. Really, in the end, for any cause to last you have to advance it through a combination of persuasion and policy. It doesn’t matter if you change the state if you don’t change the minds of the people, unless you’re actively seeking civil war. I mean, we’ve managed to get a lot done on discrimination in this country, but the civil war, and the laws passed since then haven’t been as successful as they could have been because the minds of people haven’t yet been reached enough.

But incrementationalist policy can get you there. The CRA was huge in doing that, but every victory is limited. I’m happy just to make headway, but the Greenwalds of the world would call me a bootlicking authoritarian compromiser with war criminals or something, probably.

Ed Schultz is moving back to weekdays, and taking one of Chris Matthews’ time slots, MSNBC said Monday.

Schultz will take over the 5 PM slot Mondays through Fridays, starting August 26th. Matthews, whose “Hardball” aired at both 5 and 7 PM, will now air solely at 7.

We are at a point where it is necessary to ask “What is the meaning of nationality?” It obviously doesn’t mean shit to the Masters of the Universe, who move their wealth through friend and foe alike, and it’s starting to mean nothing to the highschool grads who look up and find that there is no such thing as an ‘American job’. In a way, the nations themselves have been part of their dismantling, by being so desperate to have the richy-riches live there that they’ve gutted laws about moving income. The race to the bottom has, in the end, not benefited the nations much at all, aside from the few tax havens who are basically artificial economies. The “Irish Double” didn’t stop Ireland from crashing into the recession like everyone else.

It is hard to blame some people for being anti-state when the states themselves are being anti-state.

It will be a continuation of the balancing act between “international”, “national”, and “local” matters. Certain things are best handled at a certain level, and certain things *have* to be handled at the higher levels to avoid severe issues with mixed standards and the fact that a lot of local laws are effectively null since one can simply in many places cross a boundary and carry out said act (or purchase). Plus the fact that if localities are left to themselves the majority in many locations does tend to start legislating injustice and anti-democratic practices.

This detaining Miranda at Heathrow and he allegedly being a “journalist” so GG screams this is an attempt to intimidate journalists reminded me of some obscure tidbit of travel information.
I’ve traveled to the UK several times since 1990 and never had a problem until 2005 when I went to Scotland. There was some sort of dustup around that time involving some foreign journalists who were denied entry into the US and the UK responded by saying our journalists would have major difficulties entering the UK.
Before I left for Scotland, I was advised in no uncertain terms to not identify myself as a journalist (which is my off-the farm job). Apparently special visas are also required for journalists.
So, I identified myself as a farmer to customs/immigration at Glasgow Airport, thus opening up another can of worms.
At Glasgow, there’s a glassed in room right there where we queued up for customs and some poor wretch got pulled out of one of the lines for some very serious follow-up investigation.

I’d totally forgotten that episode until now.

The Great Emo-Prog vs. O-Bot Debate

If you express anything short of absolute condemnation of everything the NSA has done, your Twitter feed quickly fills up with hysterical proclamations from the emo-progs that you’re a right-wing shill, a government lackey, a useful idiot for the slave state, and an obvious fool. Conversely, if you criticize the NSA’s surveillance programs, your Twitter feed quickly fills up with equally hysterical proclamations from the O-Bots that you hate Obama, you’ve always hated Obama, and you’re probably a racist swine who’s been waiting ever since 2009 for a chance to take down the nation’s first black president.

So, besides a book deal and endless TV appearances for Glennykins, what’s the end game here? Is it to piss off liberals and suck votes away from Democrats in the next couple of election cycles? Because if he’s trying to do that, I hate to tell him something to burst his self important bubble:

Most anarchists and far lefties don’t vote, at least the ones I’ve met don’t. I spent my share of time with a group of anti western civilization anarchists(who are losing their shit and I told you so-ing all over their online forums) that hailed from all over the country. Only a handful of us had ever voted, EVER. They think the system is rigged and too corrupt to ever do anyone any good so why bother. They’re going to bring it all down from the outside, man.

Greenwald and others like him aren’t really “lefties” anyway, they’re disgruntled wingnuts who won’t admit that’s what they are. You dig a little beneath the surface and you find, just like with Assange, that there’s a whole treasure trove of authoritarian bullshit stewing there.

“What Is This, Russia”? The Brave Cop Imprisoned in a Psych Ward for Exposing NYPD Abuses

Doing a bit of further reading, it appears that the NYPD actions acting as initial catalyst from this case were part of the reason that a Federal Court recently ruled the “stop and frisk” policy as being unconstitutional, and possibly illegal.

en.wikipedia.org

In 2010 Schoolcraft released his recordings to the Village Voice; its reporter Graham Rayman published them as a series of articles titled “The NYPD Tapes”,[4] together with material on Schoolcraft. The suspended officer also discussed the case and his recordings with the Associated Press, which published a lengthy article, including excerpts from the recordings.[1] The New York Times reported Schoolcraft’s allegations that “commanders at the 81st Precinct pushed ticket and arrest quotas on officers.”[5]

In the analysis of Graham Rayman, writing for the Voice, this pressure to arrest had major effects in the 81st precinct, including:[8]

A ninefold increase in “stop-and-frisk” events.

“… several dozen gun arrests, hundreds of arrests on other charges, and thousands of summonses for things like disorderly conduct, trespassing, and loitering.”

Arrests on trivial charges, such as a person not displaying identification several feet away from their own house. (“Mental health worker Rhonda Scott suffered two broken wrists during a 2008 arrest for not having her ID card while standing on her own stoop.”)

Entire groups of people arrested without charges, simply for congregating on street corners. (These group arrests were often ordered directly by precinct commander Steven Mauriello and became known as “Mauriello specials”.)

A functional 8:30 PM curfew: “After 8:30, it’s all on me and my officers, and we’re undermanned,” Mauriello was recorded as saying. “The good people go inside. The others stay outside.”

“Ghost 250s”, fake stop-and-frisk reports with no names, fabricated to make quota at the end of the month.

A preference for easy arrests, rather than “bag of shit” cases who require supervision or medical treatment. One sergeant said: “Listen, don’t bring Mr. Medicine into the stationhouse, because he’s going to get free medical care from us that we all pay for, OK, and plus then he gets a nice police escort the whole time that he’s there.”

Rayman quotes retired NYPD detective Marquez Claxton: “The Police Department is using these numbers to portray themselves as being effective. In portraying that illusion, they have pushed these illegal quotas which force police officers to engage in illegal acts.”[8] Rayman said the aggressive tactics were related to understaffing on the force. He wrote: a” typical day in the 81st Precinct had only three to nine officers patrolling the streets in an area of more than 60,000 people.” Understaffing also led officers to work more overtime hours, earning more money but also becoming emotionally and physically exhausted.[8]

You know, I think I agree with whoever it was last night that said GG orchestrated this whole thing.

While I think it’s obvious that he’s not the most intelligent person around, he’s far from stupid.

Consider the progression of events:

- Greenwald leaks the original Snowden data and becomes something of a media superstar overnight
- Greenwald identifies Snowden and continues to promote the stolen data
- Snowden is revealed to have fled to Hong Kong. He wears his welcome out there before long, goes to Russia and ends up in asylum purgatory for about a month.
- During this time, the whole Snowden story slowly slides off the front pages as other news becomes more pressing (i.e. Egypt)
- Suddenly, GG’s partner is detained at Heathrow and it is revealed that he is acting as a “data mule” between GG, Snowden and Poitras.
- BOOM! GG and, to a lesser extent Snowden, are major news again.

Greenwald HAD to know that breaking the NSA story would get his profile heavy play in intelligence circles. He also had to know that people in those circles would also become VERY familiar with his close acquaintances.

It stands to reason he would have also known that sending his partner on such a mission (and apparently getting the Guardian to pay for it) would more than likely result in a situation exactly like what’s happened.

I think it’s painfully clear this whole fiasco is about Greenwald inflating his own ego.

Julian Assange and the Professional Left…

FTA:
….But that is the bottom line of libertarianism. At the core of it, there is the essential belief that government is evil, that it must therefore be stripped of powers, and that in order to do so, it must be robbed of resources. There is no separating the anti-government sentiment when it comes to intelligence operations from the opposition to government power to protect minority and women’s rights, or its power to collect taxes to invest the common good. The libertarian philosophy is one that explicitly rejects the idea that government can and should play a role in the common good.

In fact, it is from this rejection of the common good that their opposition to legitimate intelligence operations comes from. There is no inkling to check whether the intelligence operations are needed, proper, or legal, because the simple fact that the government is conducting it at all makes it evil.

I just wanted to share because I thought it was well written.

More examples of the right wings commitment to less government.

Wis. to claim marital property for Medicaid debts

Provisions buried in the new Wisconsin budget dramatically expanded the state’s ability to claim dead couples’ joint property, such as Green Bay Packers tickets or the family farm, to recoup Medicaid expenses - even if the assets are protected in trusts.

The language is designed to help the state recover Medicaid money spent on a number of long-term care programs, most notably Family Care, which helps keep disabled and elderly people out of costly nursing homes.

It’s unlikely the changes will take effect for months, but attorneys who specialize in elder law say they’re already creating concern among seniors who want to leave property to their children and other beneficiaries. The state has prioritized recovering every dollar spent on Medicaid over families’ well-being, said Carol Wessels, a Wauwatosa attorney and former chair of the state bar’s Elder Law Section Board of Directors.

“My clients are stunned,” Wessels said.

Medicaid is a state and federal partnership. Federal law requires states to recover Medicaid payouts for long-term care from a deceased recipient’s estate. The state budget language goes far beyond that, creating a presumption that marital property owned within the five years before the recipient applied for Medicaid coverage is fair game after the surviving spouse dies.

Maybe they’d rather be in Crawford, in August, standing in front of that old out building again?

Rather be in Hawaii (Obama’s vacay spot of choice) than Crawford (Bush’s).

Seriously. Time off from reporting would be awesome. Go to one of the islands and explore shit.

Shit I’d just love to bodysurf in Hawaii and then enjoy some good food and drink at night.

You go where your family is.

But if I could pick where to spend vacation, Hawaii is up there. So is any of the nation’s national parks. Rather spend time there than pretty much anywhere else in the world (except Israel) - and there’s apparently a Facebook contest for a free trip too.

True that. I’d love to go too. So jealous of my brother who spent some time in Kauai.

I have to work Hawaii in at some point. Have developed a personal quest to tour all the remaining battleships before I retire. Three down, five to go.

I’ve only been on one, USS Texas. The San Jacinto monument was cool too.

As kids, we used to slide through the torpedo tube of the USS Maine.

On the positive side, it’s an increase in Greenwald’s limited honesty.

He is now admitting that his main motives are his personal spite, resentments and obsessions, and not some altruistic concern for the well being of the US or the world or anything like that.

I wonder if Glenn Greenwald working on a screenplay for “Brokedown Palace II, The Return of The Documents.”

Oooh, I am sure the Brits are scared. Give me a break. So, if he drops more information from the ‘treasure trove’ he got from Edward Snowden, what does that mean for his continued asylum in Russia?

Let me know how that works out. I’ve found that most of the resume-writers tend to try to cram everything into a brain-dead script. No real thought, imagination or creativity shown in the writing. Which I would think is a bad thing.

Then again, WTF do I know? They’re writing for soulless HR drones who have to paw thru stacks of resumes looking for keywords that are an exact match to the Req that they’re trying to fill. Maybe going with an equally creativity-barren document *is* the proper way to make it past the First Great Moat and into the interview process, where you can start to express a little more humanity.

May you find a better place.

Just watching Rachel Maddow report about how wrong and unfair it was for Greenwald’s partner to have been detained and electronics seized. She made no mention of the electronics containing any classified information. I’m wondering if she is aware of the contents and thinks that there actually IS no classified information there. Not entirely sure why, but she was really upset about this detaining/seizure event as a strike against journalism.
