What I’d like to see happen here is that the NYT puts their fiercest editor on this reporting to make damn sure that the reporting is factual and evidence-based, with assumptions and speculations identified as such and not made the focus of the reporting.

I think this article nails how Egypt should be handled.

And we should disclose any incriminating evidence against the Muslim Brotherhood. You know somewhere in the CIA or State Department is a binder full of stuff on the Muslim Brotherhood. A lot of it incriminating. Use it to damage the MB’s reputation.

re: #11 ProTARDISLiberal

I would add one thing. Egypt needs dispel the cloud of misinformation created by the Muslim Brotherhood. They need to get the Egyptian Ambassador in front of a camera to explain the full picture. Ideally, the ambassador would also point out how the Nazi Party won elections in Germany, but they aren’t considered supporters or promoters of Democracy.

Just because you won elections doesn’t make you Democratic. Some parties get in only to dismantle the democratic system, especially in weak, post-revolutionary states. Sometimes even in more established states too.

Oh good, a kitteh thread—I have some more entertainment for you. My feline overlords have triumphed yet again. I just totally caved to my younger cat’s repeated melodramatic performances—this was like the 6th one today.

Kitty Theater

CL walks from living room through front entryway into kitchen. There’s one of those benches with a hinged seat in the entryway, which is where the cat food is stored (some on top, some inside).

Younger cat—who is an extremely picky eater with a sensitive stomach—jumps on bench and pointedly begins rubbing against the cans of the only flavor of wet food she’s decided that she likes.

CL, attempting to avoid eye contact with above mentioned cat, begins preparing a fresh pot of espresso…

Cat: Meow?

CL: *sighs* What?

Cat: *rubbing food* Meowwwwww! [Hopeful.]

CL: No. You have to finish your plate. [She knows what this means—that she has to eat all the dry food in her dish before I’ll give her anything else—and it is NOT the response she’s looking for.]

Cat: MEEEEOWWWWWW!!11! [Outraged—no, that’s not fair!]

CL: I said NO. You have to finish your plate.

Cat: meowwwww… [This time expressed in a very weak, pitiful tone designed to pull at the heartstrings.]

CL: *looks away* No, I said FINISH YOUR PLATE.

Cat, usually very agile & light on her feet (unlike the elder one) flings herself onto floor, landing with a heavy *thud*, then makes a great show of walking dejectedly (drooping tail and all) to her food dish and sniffs at the dry food. She looks back one last time, hoping against hope…. She then begins to nibble gingerly at the food….

CL: Oh, FFS—okay, you win! [Goes to open new can of wet food.]

Cat: Meow! [Ecstatic—I love you soooo much!]

CL: *shaking head* Yeah, uh-huh. You’re welcome. //

I swear, if she was a human kid she’d be crying “crocodile tears” and making a show of gagging every time she had to swallow a bite of dry food. *eyeroll*

It is true however. The Nazi Party won a plurality of seats in the 1933 Election in Germany. Upon doing so, they started dismantling democratic institutions.

There are other examples, but that is one that Americans will listen to the most.

Eh, every ten minutes someone else in America compares someone to Hitler. I think there are better ways to address Egypt’s problems without going all “THEY’RE JUST LIKE THE NAZIS IN 1933”. Especially since there’s no guarantee that won’t WIN them supporters in the Middle East.

re: #22 Shvaughn

Point proven on the last one.

I guess pointing out that Democratic Elections have led to nasty and brutal dictatorships works to. It needs to be pointed out that the Muslim Brotherhood is a nasty, duplicitous, and authoritarian group. Unfortunately, they also know how to get a reaction out of Americans. One paragraph in that article stuck with me.

The Islamists understand American culture far better than the Egyptian moderates, and they’re much better propagandists. They know how deeply Americans are repelled by the killings, so don’t put it past them to provoke and stage the killings for the television cameras. They want martyrs. They want the cameras and the carnage, and Americans are reacting like good Americans: with outrage.

There are other examples, but that is one that Americans will listen to the most.

The Nazis never did win a straight-up majority: in the July 1932 Reichstag elections, the NSDAP won 33% of the votes. Ironically, their percentage of the vote was actually in decline from previous elections, suggesting that they’d peaked, and if President Hindenburg, in one of the most monumental political blunders in history, had not appointed Hitler as Reichskanzler, the NSDAP would very likely have continued a slow descent into political irrelevance.

As for the 1933 elections, bear in mind that the Reichstag Fire Decree had taken effect shortly before, and even with that, the NSDAP could not gain an outright plurality. They ended up with 43.9%, which while impressive in a parliamentary system, is not an outright ruling majority. That came a few weeks later with the passage of the Enabling Act, where the Reichstag surrendered their power and took a long vacation.

I trust Obama, but this is already a very screwed up situation. No fewer than 3 sides ducking out, and sometimes, that swells larger to 4-5 sides. Mass murder is committed by Assad’s Forces, and Members of the FSA.

The situation in Syria is now the same as Iraq circa 2005-2007. A total psychotic bloodbath. The only side I would trust right now is the PYD, the Kurds.

The Vietnam comparison isn’t really a good one. We drifted into Vietnam over a span of decades, so LBJ’s Vietnam problem was inherited to a significant degree. LBJ’s mistake was escalating it rather than ending it

“Today, a Syrian doctor who treated hundreds of people in Wednesday’s attack on the outskirts of Damascus, told us area hospitals have counted 10,220 people affected, and of those 1,466 people died.

“We have independently verified the identity of the doctor, but are honoring his request not to publish his name, nor the hospital where he works, because he fears that would endanger the safety of his loved ones. “

It’s entirely possible that the US may have no effective way to intervene.

For example, even if the chemical attack is proven, we’re probably stuck with working through the UN. If the UN bogs down, that would be it.

Having MS and being on disability must make her worried about finances so she’s a prime scam target.

My family was broken apart when my parents separated when I was 11. Half of the family was with my mom, the other half lived with my paternal grandparents. Souda Bay is actually on the NW corner of Crete- technically Greece, I suppose. The Roberts was nearly sunk in ‘88 by an Iranian mine during the tanker wars between Iran and Iraq. The crew’s effort in saving the ship was absolutely heroic (her keel had been broken). She can launch a whole shitpot of anti-ship missiles but can’t shoot cruise missiles. Her job is to defend ships that do.

The original SBR was a DE that was sunk off of the Phillipines during the Battle of Samar, which was documented in The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, one of the great books that chronicles the sheer balls of the US Navy during WWII. Highly recommended, it will leave you shaking your head in awe. Three destroyers fought of the fucking Yamato’s battleship group and kept them from getting into Leyte Gulf.

re: #186 jayjaybear

I haven’t seen Imani post in weeks. Anne Laurie put up the post that made me give up. There are still a few people in the commentariat who are pushing back against the hysteria, but when I see multiple posts snickering that someone cited Charles’s stuff on the NSA thing like this site is some kind of fringe place, I can see where things are going. I’m not leaving completely, I don’t think, but I’m going to start avoiding NSA posts.

Fringe? Anyway, stopped following John Cole for the time being. First he freaked out about my Edward Snowden modeling shoot page. Then he started becoming more of a “Greenwald fan.”

Yes. The specific contest goal is to provide the first sentence of the worst imaginable novel.

3 Destroyers, 4 Destroyer escorts (even smaller ships). 2 of the Destroyers Johnston & Hoel and one DE Samuel B Roberts were sunk. The last destroyer, Heermann was badly damaged. Two escort carriers were lost, but the Kalinin Bay got it’s lick in for them. A shot from it’s stern 5” is credited with the hit on IJN Chōkai that caused it’s Long Lance torpedos to explode ultimately causing the loss of the cruiser. It’s the only case I know of where an aircraft carrier sunk a surface combatant with gunfire…

For me, it was upon learning - small spoiler here - that composer Johann Sebastian Bach was actually a demon hunter, who created songs using crafty musical settings that work like a dog whistle for hell spawn. B minor seems to make their eyes turn white and bug out the most.

hell js finally gets to be in a movie and it sucks

My favorite remains this very old contest winner:

The sun oozed over the horizon, shoved aside darkness, crept
along the greensward, and, with sickly fingers, pushed through the castle
window, revealing the pillaged princess, hand at throat, crown asunder,
gaping in frenzied horror at the sated, sodden amphibian lying beside her,
disbelieving the magnitude of the frog’s deception, screaming
madly, ‘You lied!”

Crete is 100% Greek.

Would you say ‘Hawaii is technically the US’?

This one made me laugh

Betty had eyes that said come here, lips that said kiss me, arms and torso that said hold me all night long, but the rest of her body said, “Fillet me, cover me in cornmeal, and fry me in peanut oil”; romance wasn’t easy for a mermaid. — Jordan Kaderli, Dallas, TX
