Major Cyber Attack Traced to Phishing Emails

In yesterday’s post about the hacking attack against the New York Times, Twitter, Huffington Post, and many other top websites, I speculated that it could have been the result of a DNS cache poisoning exploit, but the hackers gained access to these sites’ DNS records with a much more prosaic method: they tricked people into giving up their logins and passwords.

Melbourne IT, an Australian firm that allows website owners to buy addresses such as latimes.com, said the downtime suffered by the New York Times website Tuesday began when hackers gained access to the user name and password of one of the company’s sales partners.

Using those reseller’s credentials, hackers changed the records that tell computers around the world from where to download web pages when someone types nytimes.com into an Internet browser.

[Updated, 8:27 a.m. Aug. 28: The U.S.-based sales partner’s credentials ended up in the hackers’ hands after a targeted phishing attack was directed at the firm’s staff, Melbourne IT Chief Technology Officer Bruce Tonkin said early Wednesday. Essentially, several people at the U.S. firm were duped by emails that coaxed them into giving up log-in credentials.

“We have obtained a copy of the phishing email and have notified the recipients of the phishing email to update their passwords,” Tonkin said in an email. “We have also temporarily suspended access to affected user accounts until passwords have been changed.”]

Late Tuesday, Melbourne IT spokesman Tony Smith said the company was reviewing how to improve security.

You’d better believe they’re reviewing security procedures — this is supposed to be one of the most high-end DNS service providers on the planet. It’s a bit gob-smacking they had employees naïve enough to give away their passwords to a phishing email.

Phishing was behind a couple other high profile hacks earlier this year too. That includes WaPo, along with the AP, whose twitter account was hacked with false claims that bombs had exploded in the White House — sending the stock markets into a brief but massive nosedive - before fully recovering.

I also think Reuters had a similar issue - the result of phishing.

It’s not necessarily that the SEA is proficient at hacking; they’re just really, really, really good at targeting people in prominent companies with phishing schemes that sound plausible and get them to send the key information needed to access the accounts/websites/twitter access, and shut out their access.

7 lawhawk  Wed, Aug 28, 2013 1:21:28pm

re: #6 Amory Blaine

Probably a whole lot more sophisticated than that. They probably used graphics and images from the DNS company’s own site, then crafted a security warning email to people on a distribution list, and requesting certain key information that would give the SEA access to the site.

All it would take is one person to give access, and the mayhem could commence.

Pissed and worried. Here are a few of those businesses mentioned in this article…

Twitter, AOL lock down URLs in wake of New York Times hack

As the New York Times tried to wrestle back control of its website, AOL Inc. and Twitter Inc. quickly locked down parts of their own slate of domain addresses. But many other major websites continued to maintain limited security Wednesday morning.

The Syrian Electronic Army hacking group claimed responsibility for a hack Tuesday that sent some visitors of NYTimes.com to a hacker-controlled website. The hackers had secured the log-in information for a U.S. sales partner of domain name registrar Melbourne IT and then used the information to breach the company’s administrative interface. Once inside, they were able to change two strings of text that caused those trying to access the New York Times website to be redirected elsewhere.

Other companies that had their records stored with Melbourne IT, including AOL, Cisco, McAfee and Twitter, were also vulnerable, according to HD Moore, chief researcher for cybersecurity firm Rapid7.

…Moore, the researcher, said the following sites were among the ones that had been locked down: AOL-owned Huffingtonpost.com, Mapquest.com, Patch.com and Techcrunch.com; Twitter-owned Tweetdeck.com, Twimg.com, Vine.co and T.co; and Starbucks.com.

But Moore still found several unlocked domain names. Some of the ones identified and verified by The Times included: Adobe.com, Barnesandnoble.com, Cisco.com, Discovercard.com, Mcafee.com and Victoriassecret.com.

Cybersecurity analysts have warned in the wake of this week’s issues that hackers with different aims than the Syrian Electronic Army could cause more damage.

In a lot of ways this is a fight between ease of use and security. I listened to Leo Laporte explaining this in serious detail. Email preview features for instance. If we can’t trust what we see in front of us it’s going to be a pita on the commercial side of the web. I get so much Paypal phishing emails I won’t respond to anything from them email. I go to the site in my browser only. Never from an email. PITA. Online banking? Not until it’s safer.

You could try this to flush your system’s DNS cache in Windows:

If that doesn’t work it’s because your ISP is caching the DNS lookups. You could try calling their customer support about it.

Republican tells gay men to follow Alexander the Great’s example and stop ‘whoring’

New Mexico state Sen. Bill Sharer (R-Farmington) explained his opposition to same-sex marriage. He claimed that marriage had always been between a man and a woman, even before the rise of the Judeo-Christian tradition in the Western world.

“Alexander the Great (356-323 BC) married a Bactrian woman - modern day Afghanistan. Alexander may have engaged in homosexual activity, but he married a woman,” he wrote. “He directed his officers to stop ‘whoring’ around and find a local woman to marry.”

Sharer also cited the philosopher Aristotle, the Chinese thinker Confucius, and the traditions of Native American tribes to argue that marriage was solely between a man and a woman.

“Sex between a man and a woman produces babies - society needs babies - babies need both moms and dads,” he wrote.

Occasionally if you are using a router like a linksys or belkin its dhcp hands its own address out as a dns server so sometimes rebooting that can clear up the issue as well if it has something cached.

If you do an ipconfig /all and see what you have listed as a DNS you can then do an nslookup against that and see if the problem is there or with your machine.

From the end of that article:

… But attorney Chad Dunn, who has been an active opponent of Voter ID, doesn’t see it that way.

“This election involves a school district bond issuance. These elections typically have no more than 1,500 people turn out to vote. It’s surprising that we are seeing even one person affected in an election like this. The big concern comes in the primaries and then later on in the general election,” he said.

Do we have the right to define our culture?

In 1912 with the entrance of New Mexico as a full and equal partner in the Union we addressed the issue of how to define our culture. We intentionally put into our states [sic] constitution a ban on polygamy (Article XXI, Sec 1).

The founders felt strongly that defining culture was their duty. They insisted that we have a way to amend our constitution. They insisted on proportionate representation so the voice of the people could be heard. The 10th Amendment to the constitution states: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people”. Clearly meaning, that we have the right to define our culture.

With all that said:

I know that many single mom’s [sic] raise great kids who are “virtuous” and good citizens, but they are by far the exception.

There are many “walking wounded” who have been lead down the primerose [sic] path and now suffer from the effects of allowing our culture to wonder [sic] aimlessly over the abyss.

For those we should: Stop this cultural slide

Help them recover

Set the foundation of family

Work to pass laws that strengthen families

Develop social systems to support families

Allow for the differences between men and women

They’re struggling to find a reason to explain why going to war with Syria is a bad idea without admitting out loud it’s because a Democrat is in the White House.

Which is completely ridiculous, because there are innumerable reasons for the US to be wary of doing anything in Syria that have nothing to do with a black person and Democrat being in the white house.

True, but at the same time they’re fighting their inner warhawks, which say this is a perfect opportunity to bomb the country flat, install a new dictator/president who loves him some apple pie, declare “mission accomplished,” and pat themselves on the back for spreading “freedom and liberty.”

You gotta remember that many of those who suddenly love the idea of isolationism (i.e. cutting off foreign aid and telling the needy nations of the world to fuck off unless they pledge loyalty to us) are two elections away from the dipshits who cheered on two wars of choice because the guy in the White House told them it was to get “the terrorists.”

Such bombing either gets Assad and/or other senior figures, in which case it is effectively an assassination, or it doesn’t get anyone of significance, in which case it is a nearly pointless exercise in killing off a few people unlucky enough to be in harm’s way.

Neither option is really appealing.

I just found out on Facebook that my high school principal died last week. His name was unforgettable: H.L. Looney. And I just found out what the ‘HL’ stood for: Hotridge Lithco Looney, Jr. Maybe he should have changed the whole thing.

I had a meeting in his office with him, my mom, and a couple of women from N.O.W. I think it was 1974. The purpose of the meeting was to ask for girls to be allowed to take metal shop, wood shop, graphic arts, and drafting. I can hardly believe I was one of the first two girls allowed to take drafting the next year. The teacher was a big jerk, and funny at the same time. We took a lot of shit and had a lot of fun.

Here is an amazing story from a journalist with Le Monde who was with the Syrian rebels during chemical attacks last spring.

Chemical warfare in Syria

A chemical attack on the Jobar front, on the outskirts of the Syrian capital, doesn’t look like anything much at first. It’s not spectacular. Above all, it’s not detectable. And that’s the aim: by the time the rebel fighters of the Free Syrian Army who have penetrated furthest into Damascus understand that they’ve been exposed to chemical products by government forces, it’s too late. No matter which type of gas is used, it has already produced its effects, only a few hundred meters from residential areas of the Syrian capital.

At first, there is only a little sound, a metallic ping, almost a click. And in the confusion of daily combat in Jobar’s Bahra 1 sector, this sound didn’t catch the attention of the fighters of the Tahrir al-Sham (‘Liberation of Syria’) Brigade. ‘We thought it was a mortar that didn’t explode, and no one really paid attention to it,’ said Omar Haidar, chief of operations of the brigade, which holds this forward position less than 500 meters from Abbasid Square.

Searching for words to describe the incongruous sound, he said it was like ‘a Pepsi can that falls to the ground.’ No odor, no smoke, not even a whistle to indicate the release of a toxic gas. And then the symptoms appear. The men cough violently. Their eyes burn, their pupils shrink, their vision blurs. Soon they experience difficulty breathing, sometimes in the extreme; they begin to vomit or lose consciousness. The fighters worst affected need to be evacuated before they suffocate.

Read the whole thing

IMO, the US ought to see what, if anything, can be done multilaterally via the UN or Arab League. If such diplomacy produces no results, there should not be any unilateral US military action.

A Sabattus town official is under federal investigation and facing fierce criticism after he posted a message on Facebook calling for President Obama to be shot and referring to him with a racial slur.

David Marsters, 68, who is running for selectman, says he told Secret Service agents who questioned him Tuesday that he was not threatening the president when he posted the message at 8:17 p.m. Friday. It appeared above a picture of Obama and a link to a story about how some Republican lawmakers think the president deserves to be impeached.

The message said, “Shoot the …” and included a racial slur

Completely and totally OT, but the AC is glorious. Temperatures on a trajectory towards 66 and falling…

Of course, now I discover that my fancy new shiny thermostat a) doesn’t like our wireless router and b) was designed by someone who doesn’t have a secure wifi password. Thanks to my husband, we do.

I may have cursed his name a few times this afternoon, and he gets to sort out the router mess.

Since the US does not rule the world, doing nothing beyond diplomacy is an option, and often the best option.

In a world of sovereign nation states, the bar to justify military action needs to be set very high.

The Nest, yeah. I am so excited by it, except it turns out that our router doesn’t play nicely and it’s a known issue. I just can’t get the damn thing to connect.

Being able to pre-cool the house when coming home from a long road trip will be totally worth it though.

Like I said, pull every diplomatic lever we have got; pressure his allies to pressure him; provide humanitarian aid. There are lots of ways we can help humanity that doesn’t involve killing people. For the cost of allegedly saving 10,000 lives in Libya by bombing, we could’ve saved over half a million people from malaria.

well, regardless of how realistic it is (not at all), what i would like to have happen is for the un or world court to declare him a war criminal, and have an international force show up on his doorstep announcing that they are there for that purpose and that purpose alone, demand that he be handed over, and then march into the capital and arrest him, unless he flees, which would be nearly as good

i think the fact that this will not happen in our remotest dreams reflects the shameful state of the international community

Good DK article. To “win”, the US will have to get rid of Assad along with the less desirable rebels and hope that the more desirable rebels don’t morph into a fundamentalist regime.

Which would require a much larger military footprint than anyone is currently talking about.

re: #209 aagcobb

We do hold that it matters how you die, no matter how silly that is. If someone tortures someone to death over a period of hours, we hold that as worse than if they just shot them.

The usage of chemical weapons is about the wanton embrace of cruelty. Whether ordinary weapons, with amputations, traumatic brain injury, blindness, deafness, etc. as common injuries, doesn’t rise to this standard too is a question of personal opinion, but I guess a shell or a bullet can kill quickly and painlessly, whereas at anything like a real-world military-application dose most chemical weapons will kill most of their victims horribly painfully.

Also, people over 65 and women generally tended to do worse. I’m a 72 yr old female who tries to keep up, so I did much better than those in my age group. Hells bells, I scored better than 85% of the public, and with only 2 yrs of college and very little science, so my knowledge of the elements is quite limited.

I took drafting in high school. Senior Year I ended-up with the highest point score over all the boys. I was the only girl!
