UK Government: Greenwald’s Partner Had a Password Written on a Piece of Paper

Greenwald’s deceptive narrative collapses
World • Views: 30,754

The Telegraph’s David Barrett attended a hearing today on the detention of Glenn Greenwald’s partner David Miranda, and tweeted the following amazing information:

This new information utterly destroys Greenwald’s self-serving narrative about this incident.

Greenwald, of course is reacting to the news in his usual fashion — by implying the government is lying, and spewing insults.

I still think the whole “I can’t get married in the US so I’m leaving” thing is a ruse. There’s a back taxes issue and who knows what else? I’m beginning to wonder if Edward Snowden isn’t the first bit of Secret Squirrel business that GG is involved in. Up to his eyeballs.

And this, kiddies, is why all those soopersecret unbreakable algorithmic stochastic passwords aren’t worth crap. Wasn’t it supposed to take a quantum computer 3 millenia to crack Miranda’s shopping list?

18 lawhawk  Fri, Aug 30, 2013 6:02:15am

So, it appears that Greenwald really had no idea the kind of information that he was given from Snowden, but had no problem sending his SO Miranda off with it via the UK. Greenwald must have thought that he was smarter than everyone else in the room, except that he wasn’t in the room. He’s busy plotting his next move ignoring that the actions he helped set in motion are working against him and his narrative.

First, it was all about revealing violations of constitutional rights. Turns out that the situation was wildly exaggerated.

Then it was about the unfettered spying on everyone, and that the FISC was toothless. Of course, moments later the very documents he got from Snowden include FISC decisions and IG reports indicating significant and forceful oversight. That doesn’t mean that the oversight and rules couldn’t be subjected to still more scrutiny or that surveillance could be tightened further. But Greenwald’s accusations were wildly off the mark.

Then came word that Snowden’s document drop included all manner of intel about how the NSA and other agencies helped support the raid to get OBL.

That has absolutely nothing to do with whistle blowing and everything to do with revealing classified information that undermines US national security and the reduces the ability to use similar methods in future operations since means and methods are now more well known by those who would do the US harm.

Add to that the information about the black budget (the overall figure is well known and publicized by the NSA among others), but specific items are not necessarily public information because they go to where the nation is prioritizing efforts and countries could look at that and plan accordingly.

Snowden engaged in espionage. Greenwald covered for him, but now that cover is blown.

And Greenwald will lash out at anyone claiming everyone else has an agenda, but never actually denying the contents accurately reflect what is in there.

And now, for a question: At one point, the court in the UK prevented the police from pursuing criminal investigations based on the contents of Miranda’s electronics (is that an accurate brief?). Is this hearing related to that? Is there a chance the hearing will change that ruling? With all the shit that has happened since, I’ve sort of lost the thread on this particular strand.

Also, amazing that he was walking around with the password on a piece of paper given all that was going on.

Your assessment of the workings of the British court are likely to be as good as anyone’s. Bloggers have a hard time remembering that all their information is a filtered fragment of what is going on in the day-to-day world. That’s true of simple things like a school board meeting, and vastly magnified when big dollars, ideas, lives and reputations are at stake.

I remember reading one of the first WaPo articles by Gellman regarding Snowden’s conditions and it said that he wanted the WaPo to publish the power point presentation in its entirety with an online cryptographic key within 72 hours so that Snowden could prove to a foreign embassy that he was the source of the leaks. This always stuck with me because it indicated to me that his real interest was in espionage especially when the contents of the power point were so unenlightening.

Then there was der Spiegel saying that it decided not to publish some of the information Snowden gave them because it would have revealed agents.

And as more information comes out about the contents of the information, his behavior with the Russians, etc. I really do think that this presents as someone who committed espionage and not remotely a whistleblower.

I don’t know what Greenwald’s involvement in this is. It could be that he was just used but he hasn’t behaved earnestly throughout. I don’t trust Assange or wikileaks as far as I can throw a piano.

I have been lurking here for a few months, having found you when a few people at balloon-juice suggested the debate was more rational here-which it thankfully is!

Glenn Greenwald’s Partner Was Carrying A Stunning Amount Of Sensitive Documents When He Was Detained

Glenn Greenwald’s partner, David Miranda, was carrying a stunning amount of government documents when he was detained by British authorities for nine hours earlier this month.

And a UK national security adviser said Friday that some of those 58,000 documents were extremely sensitive to national security.

The Daily Telegraph’s David Barrett tweeted out some of the details from the statement made Friday by Oliver Robbins, deputy national security adviser for intelligence, before UK judges.

Robbins was making the case that national security teams and police needed to investigate the material, which they seized earlier this month.

Some of the key points:

Robbins said that the case material included 58,000 documents that were “highly classified UK intelligence documents.”

Among the documents was a piece of paper with the decryption password.
Police decrypted one file on Miranda’s hard drive with the password.

The material contains “personal information that would allow British intelligence staff to be identified,” including overseas.

Because of the size and scope of the material gathered, the British government believes that Edward Snowden “indiscriminately appropriated material in bulk.”

In what could be a particularly troubling development, the UK government has “had” to assume that Snowden’s data is in the hands of foreign governments to which he has traveled: Hong Kong and Russia. (Greenwald told Business Insider last week that it was “highly unlikely” that had happened, however.)

Robbins argued that it is “impossible” for Greenwald or any other journalist to determine which information could damage national security.

re: #54 b.d.

Not just yet. I’m really thinking that the President is going to wait and see if he can get UN support.

It’s not surprising France is again taking the lead here given their historical ties to the region (they were the colonial power in the Levant - Lebanon and Syria). With Turkey now lining up against Assad, the rest of the regional powers are going to show their hands too.

Assad will have to be held accountable (and should be held accountable) for his use of chemical weapons, and that the British parliament ruled against action shows that the CWC and other international law against the use of chemical weapons and targeting civilians, it shows that countries simply couldn’t care less about massive violations of international law or human rights unless their own interests are involved. The UN is powerless to act so long as the Russians or Chinese backstop Assad. The other Middle Eastern countries aren’t in a position to act (Egypt and Iraq are racked by its own issues, Jordan lacks sufficient military force, Saudis and Iran are more than content to let proxies do their bidding, and Turkey isn’t ready to act, though they’ve been directly affected by all the refugees streaming their way).

Failing to act now will give Assad the license to engage in still more use of the chemical weapons having seen that he can act with impunity. How many more people will have to die at the hands of this despot using chemical weapons?

Action shouldn’t come from the US (or US and France alone). The UN should suit up and indicate an intention to deal with those regimes that have no problem gassing their own citizens into submission.

Newton teacher faces child pornography charges

boston.com

2 charges of possession, one of distribution. He’s a boy’s gym teacher.

OK, now I find myself wondering if this is one of the overzealous cases.

See, we have a traditional problem when something goes into zero tolerance zones. Things get distorted. Things that shouldn’t matter, do. Minor becomes major.

Child porn is one of those things. There have been arrests of parents who sent pictures of their toddler in the bathtub to godparents and close friends. Some of those cases were tossed, others went for pleas. And it’s an easy hotbutton to muddy as almost everyone cares about children.

Heck, it’s a cliche: “For the children, Think of the children.”

So I have taken to wanting more before I join the condemnation. This teacher is in a perfect position for scum. He’s also in a perfect position for it to innocuous. Is his guilt having a couple of championship pictures taken in the locker room Or is it a couple of covert shower shots? He’s alleged to be part of a ring but he’s got ONE shared picture. Again, the shot matters, but at the same time what’s the ring? Is it a fan site, a coaches site, a true porn ring?

It actually kind of annoys me that I have to have these questions, but I’m seeing child porn becoming what drugs have been for years — a blanket excuse that covers a multitude of enforcement excess and misbehavior.

Skepticism is a good thing before considering military action, but inaction in the face of uncontroverted evidence of current chemical weapons usage is a massive moral failure on the part of the British parliament.

The problem is that it’s not incontrovertible evidence.

Were chemicals used? Probably. The evidence is a massive victim count showing appropriate symptoms.

Were they from weapons? Well, maybe. They could also have come from emplaced barrels popped open with small squib charges at the bottom in fougasse fashion.

Were they used by government or rebel forces? Since we don’t know delivery, we don’t know. Even if they were by artillery or rocket there’s still some question as rebel forces have held areas where chemical munitions were kept AND have access to artillery and rocket delivery systems. They don’t have aircraft for delivery, and I’ll note the rebel leaders are careful to note it was aircraft that made the delivery. Note again, the leaders. The majority of witnesses can only report explosions.

fwiw, an immaterial question is whether Assad ordered them or if they were launched at the command of a lower authority. Either way that’s the ‘guilty’ side.

At this point I’m fully in agreement with sending military forces into Syria, in the midst of a civil war. I’ve stated the reason why: a leadership willing to use weapons of mass destruction on its own people, own citizenry, is one that cannot be trusted and is a hazard to everybody around. We are at direct and indirect risk from a nation led by such, and that leadership needs removed.

But which leadership? I think it more likely it’s the government side, but I’m not willing to declare war given we’ve time and ability to be more certain.

I doubt many of the MPs who voted against action did so with an easy heart - they knew they were sending a message about the use of CW.

The same material, summarized over at the BBC:

bbc.co.uk

Today we have learnt a little more about the electronic files seized from David Miranda - but a lot more about why the UK authorities are so concerned about it.

There are 58,000 documents, many marked “Secret” and “Top Secret”.

Some of them, we are told, could identify intelligence staff overseas and could already be in the hands of foreign states. By that they probably mean Russia and China.

It is pretty clear that British spies don’t think much about journalists’ handling of sensitive material. It is claimed that Mr Miranda was carrying a piece of paper with a password for decrypting one of the encrypted files.

The Guardian is accused of advertising itself as a “target for hostile groups” - but the newspaper says officials are being alarmist.

The partner of the “journalist’” working with Snowden had a password that wasn’t his. This password enabled the user to access documents protected by the US government by a security clearance that none of the three (Snowden, Greenwald and Miranda) would otherwise have access to.

Is this correct?

Presumably the files had been collected from a secure information system and were encrypted by Teh GG And Pals on the thumb drive. Secret information is protected more by physical separation of systems and prevention of user access to information systems, rather than actual encryption of files. Snowden likely violated some password protocol (if not laws) in gathering those files, but that was just to get onto the network in the first place.

It’s more like locking the door to your office, rather than having the door open but the files on the computer password-protected.

Don’t know. The password :

holding the password to an encrypted file written on a piece of paper

is to be reported for an encrypted file. The story does not say document, Glenn is whinging about people saying it was for a password for a document. No where does it claim to be a password for documents.

It is probably a password to access the other passwords that protect the encrypted documents, Glenn’s notes or something else tangetical.

As the Guardian reported, the New York Times and ProPublica have only the portion of the archive relating to GCHQ. That is a small subset of the documents.

[The Washington Post’s] Bart Gellman also has only a small subset of the documents, though the number is substantial and relate to NSA. To my knowledge, he has not received any new documents from Snowden since May nor communicated with him since the first part of June, nor has he ever met Snowden.

Continuing his great legacy of lies and pulling numbers out of his ass I present to you the distinguished asshole from Wisconsin:

Walker on ACA: Insurance rates jumping 80%, employers not hiring

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, appearing on business network CNBC, said many Wisconsin businesses are not hiring full-time workers to avoid Affordable Care Act mandates and that health insurance rates will increase 80 percent or more due to the law.
Walker made the remarks while he was live in the CNBC studios in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., earlier this week with conservative economist Larry Kudlow, host of “The Kudlow Report.” Walker appeared on the show along with three guests in studios elsewhere discussing the slow-moving economic recovery and the impact of Obamacare.

I’m sure he’d also blame the teachers union but he can only hold so many things in his head at once.

Best possible outcome: No-fly zone.

I’m not sure how much that’d do. 155mm artillery is no picnic either, has a pretty long range (18 miles or so), and I’m sure Syria has CW shells that don’t have to be air-dropped.

No-fly zones worked okay in Iraq because the protected areas were isolated in the north and south and far from the population centers. Rebel and government areas in Syria seem to be on somewhat more fluid fronts and are intermingled.

Don’t know. The password :

is to be reported for an encrypted file. The story does not say document, Glenn is whinging about people saying it was for a password for a document. No where does it claim to be a password for documents.

It is probably a password to access the other passwords that protect the encrypted documents, Glenn’s notes or something else tangetical.

The first thing that came to mind (purely speculation, mind you) was that it was the password to a KeePass (or similar) database.

Incidentally, KeePass is great and everyone should use it.

The question now becomes what can and should the US do to hold the regime responsible?

The UK isn’t going to do anything, and neither does it appear that NATO is going to jump in the fray. Russia continues with its blocking actions.

And Assad gets to run up the body count in the interim.

re: #232 SchadenBoner

Yeah my tolerance has significantly lowered for Harley over the years. It’s hard for me to garner enthusiasm for a company when every time a new labor contract for the workers come up, they threaten to leave the state.

7-year pact does not guarantee state jobs

“I am too young to retire and too old to start over,” said Harley assembler Jill Huffman, summing up a pervasive feeling of uncertainty among many Harley employees who voted on the contract Monday at the Waukesha County Expo Center.

United Steelworkers of America Local 2-209 accepted the concessions-filled agreement, which takes effect in 2012, with about 620 members in favor and more than 500 against, according to union members.

The deal includes a seven-year wage freeze, with the possibility of pay raises, and higher health-care expenses. It also calls for the use of seasonal, or “casual,” employees who would not be entitled to medical or retirement benefits and would receive less pay for the same work done by regular, full-time employees. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Lodge 78 approved a similar contract.

So yeah. Whatever.

No.
Sarin is (RS)-Propan-2-yl methylphosphonofluoridate

Domino’s: Just because it has our name plastered all over it doesn’t mean its us

A Domino’s spokesman issued a statement on the $32 million award, noting that while the company is sorry for the family’s loss, Domino’s shouldn’t be held responsible for the franchisee’s driver.

“First, our hearts go out to all involved in this tragedy. This was a terrible accident. What’s difficult to comprehend is the idea that a corporation is responsible for whether an independent franchise employee is driving on bald tires. The employee is in question did not work for us; he worked for an established independent franchise operation. Franchisors do not control the day-to-day operations of franchisees, especially to that minute level of detail. We are saddened by this tragedy, but do intend to appeal the decision.”

Think of Subway restaurants. It might say somewhere, in tiny print, that the place is a franchise operation, but all you are going to see is the big blazing signage that says “SUBWAY” and if you have a problem there who are you going to complain about? Not some random franchisee, but Subway.

I had a similar experience when I worked for an “authorized retailer” for a major wireless provider. We had the providers name and logo blazed across the front of the store but not one indication whatsoever that we were not actually owned by that provider. People got mad about that when they realized how limited we actually were and how we weren’t being totally upfront about our operation.

It’s the same thing with contractors. Say a Comcast contractor, with the Comcast logo blazed across their van gets in an accident or runs down a dog? Immediately Comcast is like: “Oh well, it wasn’t ACTUALLY our fault, it was the contractors fault. We will take appropriate disciplinary action against them.”

At what point do the lines become too blurred? It shouldn’t require reading every bit of fine print everywhere to figure out exactly what company you are dealing with.

I’m glad that Kerry is talking about crimes against humanity being perpetrated against the Syrian people by the Assad regime.

The question now becomes what can and should the US do to hold the regime responsible?

The UK isn’t going to do anything, and neither does it appear that NATO is going to jump in the fray. Russia continues with its blocking actions.

And Assad gets to run up the body count in the interim.

100,000 and counting.

2 million refugees. And counting.

I’m probably being naive here, but why can’t the UN arrest Assad and try him at the Hague?

That would require full scale war. It would also require the Russians and the Chinese to not turn a blind eye to what is going on. This is why the UN is a good idea but also has a down side. You have the Russians and Chinese who can wield their veto power on the UNSC to stop the UN from even so much as raising an objection to what Assad is doing.

“Deep pockets” theory. What they do when the actual responsible party has insufficient insurance and assets. It reminds me of car makers getting forced to pay or settle when a teen buys a fast car, gets drunk and or drives way over the limit and gets himself and his passengers hurt or killed. The grieving paremts don’t sue the city that left the tree in the median, they don’t sue the car salesman or the agency that ran the ads for the performance car.

They sue the maker of the car. I don’t agree with that sort of thing at all.

How is it just for a party with 1% of responsibility to pay the big bucks? Fair vs. just?

President Obama to briefly comment on Syria during appearance with presidents from Baltic region - @NBCNews
2 mins ago by editor

360 lawhawk  Fri, Aug 30, 2013 10:59:16am

Here’s how this plays out in the US politically.

Sec. State Kerry says that inaction will weigh on the nation’s conscience; GOP will blame Administration if they do nothing, and the body count rises in Syria.

If the President moves to act, the GOP will attempt to block action potentially with a vote in Congress. The body count will be blamed on Presidential inaction.

If the President moves to act, and Congress votes to approve, and the situation goes from bad to worse, the GOP will blame the President and Kerry for the entire mess.

Outcome: No good political outcome as the GOP will find fault with the Administration regardless of the circumstances.

Inaction is inhumane here given the use of chemical weapons by Assad. How we take that action is key.

The UN and NATO appear to be no gos. Unilateral (or with French support) is possible, but still not a great option. Who/what would we be targeting, and could we be assured of hitting all the necessary targets.

This isn’t like going after a solitary nuclear facility like the Israelis did back in 2007. The chemical weapons plants are more dispersed, and an attack could end up poisoning the surrounding area with significant casualties.

It may make more sense to attempt a snatch and grab of Assad directly, though that would require forces in excess of those used in the OBL raid, which was plenty complicated as it was.

And even if we got Assad, you’ve got a bunch of raving Islamists who would have no problem using those same chemical weapons against their enemies, and would cause plenty of mayhem in their own right.

Securing those NBC facilities would seem to be the key - denying their access to all sides, but that assumes they haven’t already fallen into the wrong hands. That would take boots on the ground, logistics, and a lot more troops than the other scenarios.

In other words - no good options. Only those that are less bad, and certainly those that are less bad than letting Assad continue padding the butcher’s bill.

Maybe, but he pretty much turned in the technical stuff on his own initiative. He wasn’t forced, and apparently he was farther along than anyone knew.

Getting yellowcake wouldn’t be the main obstacle for him, as Libya has uranium deposits and there’s a rich deposit on the border between Libya and Chad.

The yellowcake that was found was 1000 barrels dumped in the middle of the desert. I’d think it was probably just abandoned, rather than being a ‘stash’ for later. They might not have even been able to sell it on the market, if the sale and distribution of yellowcake is controlled and regulated.

Reminder to wingnuts—-St. Ronnie got no congressional approval to invade, with ground troops, Grenada. That was cool with y’all.

But that was different because Ronnie could do no wrong and Obama can do no right,// But yeah this speaks to the hypocrisy on these kind of issues and what Obama is up against. It all fucking sucks.

And this is what I mean. Fischer will condemn Obama no matter what he does here and it’s a position that is held by many Congressional Republicans.

Brings up an idea. Why not bring a formal declaration of war before congress and follow the will of the representatives of the American people?

President Obama expected to make remarks about Syria at 2:15 p.m. ET, according to a senior administration official.

per CNN

I’m still trying to figure out how Obama is responsible for what’s going on in Syria.

The rule is: always responsible for anything negative.
Never responsible for anything positive.

Now wasn’t that easy?

All I want to know is, what’s David Gregory’s position in all of this? Will he be twerking at the press ball? Is it now inappropriate to wear a foam #1 finger at the ballgame?

well this is the aftermath of the Arab Spring where there aren’t enough secularists, well organized enough to take on the fundamental extremists and megalomaniac dictatorships to bring any sense of stability to the region as those folks got co-opted by the AQ and MB sects because they were more organized.

So what to do?

immediate aid via Lebanon and Turkey to help those refugees that are there

“strategic” strikes/attempts to take out the chemical weapon capabilities of the government and keeping them out of hand of the extremists… yeah, good luck with that

bombing the government infrastructure in order to try and broker peace talks between Assad and the MB and AQ and other secularist factions of the opposition?

Bombing “purely” military targets in hopes of reducing Assad’s capacity for war?

I don’t see how an economic embargo does much of anything here since the proxies will take care of their own…..

President Obama speaks on Syria in a few minutes..

392 lawhawk  Fri, Aug 30, 2013 11:20:31am

So, yesterday the WaPo ran that whole expose based on Snowden documents about how the NSA and other agencies cooperated to help support the raid to get OBL. It highlighted all the assets and tremendous infrastructure backing up the raid.

Gee, I can’t imagine where we might need those kinds of capabilities, say, like now. Syria. Bashar al Assad.

But now everyone knows what kinds of capabilities were involved, and what went into making that raid happen - and increased its chances of success.

Don’t think for a moment that Assad isn’t cognizant of what the US might consider doing against him personally.

Now, that may have positive outcomes without firing a shot of its own. Force Assad into hiding and limit his communications and command and control may limit his ability to maintain his forces and control over them. That potentially helps the rebels, but it also increases the chances for independent usage of chemical weapons by Army units. Doesn’t mean that he can’t send messages by means other than over radio/wire, but it makes it harder.

re: #382 NJDhockeyfan

Gee the journalist who helped publish Snowden’s document stash is going to award him for dumping those documents obtained illegally. Yeah, sounds totally legit to me. /

Oh no. I can see it already. With the nuts who are just waiting, looking for any reason to impeach, a missile strike would be used as the reason despite other presidents doing the same thing in other situations.

I’m getting real sick of Gregory. Sometimes it seems he prepares what he is going to be wearing this week instead of how he can craftily ask questions that really expose a person to get some truth.

I knew Tim Russert. Tim was a friend to those wanting some truth. And David…you are no Tim Russert.

Invasion or student rescue? Has history decided?

Did Carter go to Congress for permission to try to rescue the hostages?

No, Glenn is more clever than that. It was his birthday, in reverse. It was that “in reverse” part that was the very cunning plan.

Operation Ortsac -level secrecy.
