REMINDER: GOP Is Threatening Economic Disaster For Only One Reason

They will never ever, ever, ever raise taxes on the rich.

The roadshow being put on by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and the Heritage Foundation pushing for the defunding of Obamacare is doing a good job of pitting Republican against Republican. But it’s helped distract from the one core value of the Republican Party: Never ever ever ever ever ever ever raise taxes on the rich.

Politico is reporting that deficit talks between the White House and Senate Republicans have broken down over that exact issue.

“While it’s disappointing, it’s very evident that there’s not enough common ground to produce a result,” Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), said on Thursday.

This is a repeat of the same drama that led to the debt limit crisis, the failure of the “super committee” and could lead to another crisis that slows economic growth at best or a complete financial meltdown at worst, even as the deficit continues to fall — to about half of what President Obama inherited.

Republicans demand cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. The White House agrees, as long as Republicans will agree to some tax increases on the rich. Everything falls apart. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Even though taxes went up slightly on income over $400,000 and capital gains at the beginning of the year, tax breaks still cost the government more than Medicare, Social Security or defense. And more than half of all those cuts go to people in the top tax bracket.

Among these tax expenditures are billions in carve-outs for hedge fund managers who pay lower tax rates than nurses, mortgage deductions on second homes, dodges for big oil and private jets, along with a tax break that allows Mitt Romney to end up with $100 million in his IRA.

Republicans aren’t willing to cut any of them. You can blame Grover Norquist and his pledge. Or you can just recognize that low taxes for the rich is the GOP’s one inviolable belief. And notice the key words “for the rich.”

The latest talks reportedly included Republican demands for “Chained CPI” on Social Security, a change to the program that would both slowly decrease benefits and also subtly increase taxes on the middle class. President Obama has stated publicly that he’s willing to accept this reform if the poorest seniors are protected and Republicans agree to tax increases on the rich. Result: Talks collapse.

“On matters related to the budget, the president has always been clear that closing tax loopholes that benefit the wealthy had to be part of any big deal,” a White House official said, in a statement. “That’s been clear for several years.”

What’s been clearer even longer is that the GOP will do anything to keep taxes low on the rich, especially the super rich — even risk economic catastrophe.

And anyone who votes for a Republican for federal office is voting for this priority set.

Because the 1950s were such an economic wasteland, amiright?

Sick of this debate, but it’s not going to end until Republicans lose a few more elections.

At this point, the only thing that will cause the GOP to change course is nominating a True Believer for POTUS and suffering a Mondale-style national defeat at the polls. Nothing else will pull the Republicans away from their current course.

The GOP is determined to be the party that destroys the poor and middle class so the rich benefit, no matter what it takes. They have no problem stepping on people so that they don’t have to pay taxes.

I’m more of the opinion that what will ultimately change the GOP is their bluff finally being called. If that means a return to recession or worse, then perhaps its for the best. They never successfully convinced voters that it was Obama was responsible for the credit downgrade and the subsequent damage to the economy, they won’t do any better if they’re responsible for a default.

The problem with Republicans is that they think they are winning even when they are losing. They are immune to evidence. And global warming is fake.

True. But the voters don’t all exist within that little bubble of the GOP’s. They’re outside, in the world where an economic downturn means no job, no money, no home, and no future. They can only put up with the GOP’s bullshit so long.

They’re really expert at finding flaws in their last candidate. I’m not sure anybody can maintain true believer status through the GOP post election loss analysis. Cruz would be torn down by the hard core birthers, Rand Paul would be seen as too libertarian, Ryan supports gay adoption, and so on.

The GOP mentality has a central core of revanchist, racist, self centered dickishness, but it is just protean enough at the edges to, in defeat, reject any conceivable individual candidate the party has selected as a liberal.

The only thing holding the party together at this point is hatred of the other.

Too true. The latest evidence on point is the conspicuous lack of official RW talking points on Syria.

Their problem is that is it hard to derive how Omaba is wrong in going to Congress with respect to Syria if “cutting taxes on the rich” is the only axiom allowed.

You know a party is nuts when it openly frets the possibility of a budget surplus by 2016 that Obama would get the credit for.

Link

So imagine 2016 in the unlikely but not completely impossible event that a budget surplus does materialize. Republican elevation of the deficit issue will allow the Obama administration and its Democratic allies to declare “mission accomplished,” all without taking the blame for entitlement reform. The House-passed budget that promised a balanced budget within the ten-year budget window by making unrealistically deep cuts in Medicaid and domestic discretionary spending will continue to be hung around the necks of congressional Republicans.

The horror of it! The massive deficit Bush left is repaired before the GOP can come back and screw everything up again!

Since the LGF post mentioned chained CPI, I must say, I think chained CPI is one of my least favorite “policies”: a polite fiction that benefits to the elderly keep up with inflation, when they really don’t.

From aarp.org, “The chained CPI is a twist on that: It measures living costs differently because it assumes that when prices for one thing go up, people sometimes settle for cheaper substitutes (if beef prices go up, for example, they’ll buy more chicken and less beef).”

It just seems so painfully sad to me, to use a standard like that to determine benefits to the elderly.

Okay, I have a tech observance/request:

When we link to an individual comment from a different thread, for example like this, using the rel="shadowbox" attribute doesn’t work—I just tried it and it prevented the link from working—so we have to view it in a separate tab. Can we please, please, pretty please have a lightbox open for those so we don’t have to switch tabs?

OK… instead of using rel="shadowbox", add class="image" to the link code.

That’s a little more memorable, and it also avoids using the rel attribute in a way it wasn’t intended to be used.

Always goin’ for the semantics here.

So much fucking astroturf. He needs it purely for political reason, because there’s no UN resolution and France would be his only ally going in. Everyone understands this.

None of these people wants to game out every conceivable scenario in a world where the President needs to seek Congressional authority before taking any action. There’s just too many plausible contingencies where the American public overwhelmingly wants to have President with the authority to react quickly and decisively.

There’s an argument to be made that Obama should have sought a vote before getting involved in Libya, but what really pisses his critics off, on both sides, is that the Libya military action was handled so brilliantly, without a single US service member killed, and that there were no massacres or charges of war crimes. That’s a big part of why the wingnuts have kept trying so hard to make Benghazi a scandal, and it came a year after Gaddafi’s overthrow.

And the reason for retrieving the bombs should be obvious.

The official described it as a “deep channel,” saying it was about 60 meters (about 197 feet) deep.

That’s beyond the recreational dive range, but right at the limit of a PADI Divemaster pair breathing normal air. Some motivated and decently funded civilians with access to Trimix or Heliox could have recovered the bombs and used them for who knows what.

At this point, the only thing that will cause the GOP to change course is nominating a True Believer for POTUS and suffering a Mondale-style national defeat at the polls. Nothing else will pull the Republicans away from their current course.

I think that at this point, the only thing that will cause the GOP to change course is electing True Believers to all the offices, and passing all the laws they want. Then having the whole social and financial system collapse specifically because of their policies.

You know, the one thing I like about the Tea Party is that they won’t join a bipartisan agreement to fuck the elderly unless they can also fuck the working poor while giving the rich a handjob.

Many moons ago, I worked in a grocery store. I remember, during training, how they drilled into us that we had ensure spills were cleaned up promptly to avoid such an occurrence. I also recall them telling us to make sure caps on hazardous products were on tight, because apparently a customer had bought a bottle of bleach with a loose lid and, after it spilled all over her car seats, she successfully sued the store for damages (or threatened to sue, and they settled out of court - you might be able to do the same in this case, if the supermarket has any sense)

The Nimitz carrier strike group, which includes four destroyers and a cruiser, has no specific orders to move to the eastern Mediterranean at this point, but is moving west in the Arabian Sea so it can do so if asked.

“It’s about leveraging the assets to have them in place should the capabilities of the carrier strike group and the presence be needed,” said the official.

The Nimitz carrier group had been in the Indian Ocean supporting U.S. operations in Afghanistan but was due to sail east around Asia to return to its home port in Everett, Washington, after being relieved in recent days by another aircraft carrier, the USS Harry S. Truman.

Conservative editor: Republicans are losing because of Family Guy

Republicans are losing to Democrats because pop culture in the United States is dominated by liberal thought, according to conservative writer and TV editor Bill Whittle.

At the RightOnline Conference in Orlando on Saturday, Whittle singled out the TV show Family Guy with particular disdain.

“Any audience of people that grew up with classical Superman automatically love this country because Superman is about the best America we can be, and when Superman was all over the pop culture we were a nation that loved this country,” he remarked. “Now, 20 years after the peak of Superman’s popularity along comes Gilligan’s Island. That’s pretty neutral in terms of politics. Really about the only message you can get from Gilligan’s Island is if you want to get off the island all you have to do is kill Gilligan.”

“But if you’re a young person out there today and you can finish the theme song from Family Guy, then all the anti-American, anti-capitalist, anti-Christian, anti-morality messages of Family Guy are in your head as completely and thoroughly as that theme song is.”

Yeah, that’s completely it.

Out campaigning the other day I ran into someone who isn’t voting for my candidate because “She’s Jewish, and I’m already voting for my Jew. I’m voting for one Jew, one Christian, one Muslim, and one Hindu.” I asked him why and he said “I love New York!”

I guess if you’re a low-information voter and you know it and plan to stay that way, just picking diversity is as good a way as any other.

Newest Report from Glenn Greenwaldo/Snowbunny.

Report: NSA spied on Brazilian, Mexican presidents

The National Security Agency’s spy program targeted the communications of the Brazilian and Mexican presidents, and in the case of Mexico’s leader accessed the content of emails before he was elected, the U.S. journalist who obtained secret documents from NSA leaker Edward Snowden said Sunday.

Journalist Glenn Greenwald, who lives in Rio de Janeiro, told Globo’s news program “Fantastico” that a document dated June 2012 shows that Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto’s emails were being read. The document’s date is a month before Pena Nieto was elected.

re: #183 ObserverArt

Newsflash. Not illegal. Not a problem. And definitely within the NSA/CIA rights and powers to find out information that could be beneficial to US policy makers in setting policy.

Want to know what foreign governments are thinking and doing - and whether their public statements match their privately stated intent? You need to spy on them. It’s what countries do.

And it’s odd that Greenwald fixates on what the US does with its spy program to the exclusion of all others. He fixates and thinks of the worst case scenarios as actually occurring, and claims outrageous outrage over the fact that the US engages in any kind of intel gathering, even though it violates no law. After all, what law is violated by the US spying on Brazil or Mexico.

With Mexico, we should be trying to figure out whether there are plots against the Mexican government by the drug cartels, whether the government there is adequately dealing with the crime situation, and whether they perceive the threat of the cartels accurately or are underestimating the true nature of the drug war. Not doing so would be a gross dereliction of duty by the US spy agencies and their mandate to inform the US government of potential threats and effects on US policy.

re: #191 Justanotherhuman

Many companies are seeing record profits, while wages have been stagnant. Executive pay continues climbing, but other wages within the company aren’t keeping pace. There’s a huge disconnect in corporate America, and it’s not getting better.

And there’s no easy answers either. Shareholders want to see the profits - and dividends, not that the profits are plowed back into employee wages since it doesn’t help the bottom line or so their thinking goes. But in a way, improving wages does help since it creates more motivated employees who are willing to stay with companies longer, work harder, and get more rewards for staying with their companies.

It would be nice if more companies took the Costco approach to paying wages - but far more are in the Walmart/McDonalds approach where the top level executives get tremendous compensation packages, while the entry level is barely compensated to poverty levels.

Claiming that raising the starting wage at McDonalds would increase the cost of the menu by 100-200% ignores the actual financial reality. Higher employee costs would add perhaps a quarter to the cost of most menu items, since many of the costs relating to operations comes from material/food acquisition and real property costs. Higher wages would promote more professionalism among those working, and reduce their reliance on other government programs (like SNAP) since the wages simply aren’t sufficient - especially in high cost areas around the nation.

My problem isn’t with motorcycles - my brother uses a Honda Nighthawk to commute to work in fair weather. And if a restored classic is noisy due to the period tech that can probably be tolerated. To me it’s that a popular and fairly common modern design company is making and selling bikes that are essentially *designed* to be excessively noisy. And to a point that they are much more noticeable than automobile, or even truck, traffic.

214 sattv4u2  Mon, Sep 2, 2013 6:34:18am

Part of why bikes are so loud is that with cars having multiple blind spots it’s much harder to see a smaller motorcycle than it is to see a car/ truck approaching you from the side. Think about how many times you DIDN’T see a car next to you. It’s that much worse for the smaller bike, hence the noise to alert you they are there

Allen West posts this on Facebook:

Watched the Chris Wallace interview with Secretary of State John Kerry today and I must admit, Kerry is seriously delusional. He actually believes America demonstrates strength by showing Assad, Iran, and our other enemies the “power of our democratic process.” Obama came out Saturday in the Rose Garden and voted ‘present’ then departed to do what he does best, play golf. And this conglomeration of ineptness called the Obama Presidential Cabinet believes they have actually shown resolve? We have lost all credibility and the weak attempts by Obama, and Kerry today to now set Congress up for blame just proves the lack of conviction emanating from the White House. US Navy warships are now cutting donuts in the Mediterranean Sea and I apologize for subjecting our men and women in uniform to this abomination. Obama has made a joke of American exceptionalism and power. Once again I must repeat, elections do have consequences.

Bolding mine - where West cuts right to the heart of the matter. For wingnut douchebags like West, this isn’t about the democratic process or Teh Constitution. It’s all about blame.

And you can bet the damn farm that if Obama had moved unilaterally, West would be bitching about Obama not involving Congress in the decision. Asshole.

The douchosauruses that currently own HD are more interested in making a fashion statement than they are anything else. When the company was barely hanging on it was the HD brand/logo on clothing and other merchandise that saved the company from tanking. I’ve met more than my share of idiots with motorcycles in the last 20 yrs. Harley has forgotten who it was that made them who they are now- their employees and the working class guys and bikers who bought Harley because they were made here. Now they cater to rich assholes who trailer their bikes to Sturgis in their Sons of Anarchy t-shirts.

Yes, however there is a certain amount of douche associated with Harley riders now. Other brands haven’t gone over the top with the noise factor. It’s a fashion thing- look at me!- more than it has to to with safety as far as the actual brand itself goes. I know a lot of these “weekend warrior” types, they could give a shit about the safety issue, HD has a certain “coolness factor” attached to it which is ALL they care about. Interesting.

Why is the Libertarian Party going all the way to Rome?

262 Political Atheist  Mon, Sep 2, 2013 8:05:05am

This is why I dismiss out of hand what it is said the “world” or a region like the M.E. “thinks”.

We attack and we are infidels attacking Islam. Foreign imperialists. When we choose a careful approach as the rest of the world has called for… Our choices are cowboy or coward in the alleged “popular” view.

BEIRUT — President Obama’s surprise decision to seek congressional approval for military strikes on Syria reinforces a growing image across much of the Middle East of a regional U.S. policy that is adrift at a time of perilous change.

263 HappyWarrior  Mon, Sep 2, 2013 8:11:27am

The reaction ovre the president’s decision to seek Congressional approval I think really shows you how he can’t win with his critics left and right. He seeks approval. He’s a wuss and doing so to cover his own tracks. He doesn’t. He’s an unilateralist involving us in Syria’s civil war. I am just amazed that Obama hasn’t had a Truman moment where he calls out his critics yet. I certainly would not blame him if he did because the shit gets old.

re: #214 sattv4u2

Part of why bikes are so loud is that with cars having multiple blind spots it’s much harder to see a smaller motorcycle than it is to see a car/ truck approaching you from the side. Think about how many times you DIDN’T see a car next to you. It’s that much worse for the smaller bike, hence the noise to alert you they are there

Bluntly, bull.

The Hurt study comes the closest to being research and since that’s not its primary focus it’s not definitive. That said, it notes that loud piped motorcyles are overrepresented in accidents.

So show me a study that demonstrates loud pipes (that don’t direct noise forward, that suffer from doppler effects, that are mostly loud for people adjacent and to the rear) increase the motorcyclists’ safety. Because the closest thing we’ve got to it says otherwise. That in addition to being an annoyance to all around and a hearing damage threat to riders they’re actually less safe.

The Group of Friends of the Syrian People[1] (sometimes: Friends of Syria Group or Friends of the Syrian People Group or Friends of Democratic Syria or simply Friends of Syria) is an international diplomatic collective of countries and bodies convening periodically on the topic of Syria outside the U.N. Security Council. The collective was created in response to a Russian and Chinese veto on a Security Council resolution condemning Syria; American president Barack Obama has stated that it was organized by the United States.[2]

For a country whose “policy is adrift” at a time of perilous change,” we have moved a *lot* of US Naval air, surface & underwater assets in place re Syria.

Reminds me of the Cuban missile crises. Suspect there is some back channel diplomacy going at this time.

re: #295 Vicious Babushka

How does pot, as a pain killer, compare to Vicodin?

I don’t know about serious bone-deep pain, but I can say that it works wonders on migraines.

Once upon a time, when I was about 17, I contracted mononucleosis. I still have no idea how I got it, because nobody I was hanging around at the time ever got sick. That was the sickest I have ever been in my life. My entire body ached, I was constantly sweating like a pig, and my throat felt like I had gargled razor blades. My liver was enlarged and I had jaundice. I couldn’t keep food down. This lasted about 4 weeks. My weight went down from 130 lbs to 105 lbs.

The absolute worst* part of it was the relentless nausea. There was no way to be comfortable at all because of the nausea. If there is a hell, it consists of the feeling that you’re going to barf at any minute, just not now. Because my friends and I were a bunch of Cheech & Chongs at the time, I had access to marijuana. Smoking MJ did not improve the disease or affect most of the serious symptoms like liver enlargement and so forth, but it made the nausea go away. That by itself made the rest of it bearable.

I think if someone is fighting a disease like cancer whose treatment can cause gut-wrenching nausea as a side effect, it’s unconscionable not to allow them all possible means to alleviate that side effect. Reducing the stress inflicted by a side effect of treatment must surely be beneficial.

* the other worst part of having mono is this: many years later, my nephew got mono and breezed through it with nothing more than mild flu-like symptoms. He was sick for about 6 days. That kid is 28 now and has never experienced any adversity in his life, which I resent slightly because I am a horrible person.

119. I cannot arrest children for being rude.

148. Putting red “Mike and Ike’s” (r) into a prescription medicine bottle, and then eating them all in a formation is not funny.

174. Furby (r) is not allowed into classified areas.

200. My chain of command is not interested in why I “just happen” to have a kilt, an inflatable sheep, and a box of rubber bands in the back of my car.

The nearby lake here is large enough to be its own weather generator. It’s really messed up to watch a radar map and see the way the storms and clouds can sometimes just part across the lake, and sometimes are attracted to it like a magnet.
