Working Hard, or Hardly Working? Congress Gives Themselves 239 Vacation Days in 2013

Priorities evident

As House Republicans decide not to return early to deal with Syria while simultaneously whining about the President playing golf, just thought you might like to know that this year, our elected representatives in Congress have generously granted themselves 239 vacation days.

They need to be well-rested for that 67th attempt at repealing Obamacare.

But what remains most astonishing about our representatives on the Hill is not only the quantity of legislation, but the amount of time spent working. The Congressional calendar for this coming year consists of 126 days, leaving members of Congress 239 days to perhaps tour our great nation, toy with the idea of running for higher office, and maybe visit a natural disaster or two. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s calendar releases rather embarrassing scheduling without a single 5-day work week or weekend. If you are already feeling riled up about this, I would not suggest looking at the month of August.

So, how? How can hard-working Americans, residents of one of the most overworked countries in the world, commute five times a week to and from work while their money is squandered away in one of the two or three weekly meetings Congress manages in squeeze in?

Well, perhaps my take on activities is somewhat cynical (not that you should have expected any less). Apparently, these weeks off are called “District work periods,” also known as free travel at taxpayer expense.

But it takes a LOT of time and effort to raise the amount of money you need to buy a congressional seat.

(I wish I could use sarc tags on that, but it’s just true.)

365 - 239 = 126 days
126/7 = 18 weeks
18 X 40 hours = 720 hours
$174,000 / 720 = $241.67/hour

Also note they were much more active during the Eisenhower and Reagan years.

I just have to go to the supermarket to pick up the roast that I ordered.

Happy Labor Day. It’s kind of amazing how many people DON’T have today off.

It must be nice to make that much money and not have to break a sweat. I really can’t say much more or I’d be banned. I have to go take care of a sick husband who is going to have to go back to work, a REAL job, tommorrow, sick or not.

Occupy is converging

A Labor Day Occupy Convergence will happen at Bradley / Chelsea Manning Plaza (Justin Herman Plaza on the Embarcadero across from the Ferry Building in San Francisco) on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, starting at 10 a.m until 4 p.m., or whenever. There will be music and lights by the SFPD - the San Francisco Projection Department. There will be dancing, flashmobs, singing, chalking and movies - and talk and fun.

Police brutality is on the agenda. Frontline San Francisco Occupier Mike Zint has researched the dangers from vaccines and is prepared to talk about them.

A series of 20 colorful Occu-Cards on display at the plaza will focus on core issues in the re-humanizing process:
•Goldman Sacks and the banks’ destruction of the U.S. economy.
•The Supreme Court ruling that corporations are persons with First Amendment rights, where their money is speech.
•The United States alone among countries provides no universal health care.
•A military-industrial-complex of military, corporate, and government entities has created a U.S. fascist state.
•The monetary system’s inflated loans must GO!

16 lawhawk  Mon, Sep 2, 2013 12:59:27pm

As with so many things, GOPers see this as a feature, not a bug.

They see an inactive Congress as a good thing since it means that they can’t raise taxes or take away rights. They instead project and claim that the President is off golfing and on vacation even though Obama has by objective measures spent less time away from the WH than President Bush.

But this Congress wont let its vacation be called a recess, lest it allow the President the opportunity to go and provide recess appointments. You know - letting the President do his job because they’ve stymied his nominations for months and years on end.

Happy Labor Day!

26 blueraven  Mon, Sep 2, 2013 1:13:46pm

John McCain and Lindsey Graham met with Obama today

Republican Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham emerged from a Labor Day meeting with President Obama saying they had more confidence that the White House is developing a Syria strategy they can support.
McCain and Graham have jointly expressed concerns that a military strike should be part of a broader strategy in Syria, not simply a random attack to punish the regime.

After meeting with Obama Monday, they both said they believed the White House is developing a strategy that would weaken the regime of President Bashar Assad and boost Syrian opposition forces — though they said Obama has more work to do to explain this plan.

“We still have significant concerns,” McCain said, “but we believe there is in formulation a strategy to upgrade the capabilities of the Free Syrian Army and to degrade the capabilities of Bashar Assad. Before this meeting, we had not had that indication.”

MOPP4, but that’s my customary LGF wear.

Hmm…

MOPP4. Personnel completely encapsulate themselves by closing their overgarments, adjusting all drawstrings to minimize the likelihood of any openings, and putting on their protective gloves. MOPP4 is used when the highest degree of protection is required, or if CB agents are present but the actual hazard is not determined. As with every other MOPP level, flexibility is built into the system to provide relief to the individual. Once the hazard is identified and risk assessment measures are employed, the overgarment may be left open.

A place called Occupy Madison: The homeless community plans its radical next step

When Caleb Pickle fled trouble at home in the spring of 2012, he wound up a stranger on the streets of Madison.

Pickle lived in the shelter system for a while but found it wasn’t really helping him get back on his feet. He says case workers urged him to hang out for a few months and try to get on disability, perhaps by exaggerating his emotional problems. But Pickle wanted a job, not a “handout.”

“I’m a confident person. I knew I was capable of living on my own and getting a job,” the 20-year-old says. “I just needed some place to store my stuff.”

Then he heard about a place called Occupy Madison. It was a group of people camping out, pooling resources. Pickle was skeptical at first - he worried the group might be unstructured or unruly - but gave it a chance.

At the time, the group was camping out at Dane County’s Lake Farm Park on the south side of Madison. Occupy Madison gave Pickle a tent, a sleeping bag and a bus pass. Within a couple of weeks, he got work at a temp agency. Not long after that, he had a place at Port St. Vincent de Paul. Now he works as a caregiver and rents a room in a house. Soon he will move to a Fitchburg apartment. He credits Occupy with helping him get a foothold here.

It’s not all raping and stabbing.

/ Do I really need one.

It’s always frustrating to see people on my side of the argument make such stupid points. The “it’s not our problem” sounds callous and heartless. Although I agree somewhat, you just can’t phrase it that way. It discounts the very real suffering and loss of innocent human lives.
Also the effect of the decision not to act does have an effect on the decisions other countries make regarding human rights abuses when the know there aren’t consequences. To say the argument “doesn’t make sense” is just ignorant.

I agree; I actually had someone once me their resumé in comic sans.

I e-mailed them back and told them if they wanted me to take them seriously, they should redo it in a different font.

They never wrote back……..

On a personal note, it’s been 4 days without a cigarette now. The acute nicotine withdrawal is still there, but not as bad as it was on the second day, wherein I had the chills, cold sweats, and vomiting.

I had horrible physical symptoms when I quit, using the patch.
Turns out that even though I was a pack a day smoker (sometimes more) for decades, the patch was giving me a HUGE nicotine overdose.
Stopped using the patch, horrible symptoms disappeared.

Forensic anthropologists seek clues in 50 unmarked graves on segregated reform school campus in Florida

The University of South Florida anthropologists conducting the investigation this weekend worked for months to identify more unmarked graves and then had to appeal directly to Governor Rick Scott (R) to exhume the bodies they found, after his Secretary of State refused permission for the dig. Head anthropologist Erin Kimmerle told CNN, “These are children who came here and died, for one reason or another, and have just been lost in the woods.” She is hoping to be able to match the DNA of some of the recovered remains to families who have been waiting for answers, and to determine some of the causes of the deaths of the bodies she finds. “When there’s no knowledge and no information, then people will speculate and rumors will persist or questions remain,” she added.

Christian Wells of the University of South Florida told Al Jazeera, “There is a legal obligation of the State of Florida to return those remains to their families for proper burial. And some have argued there’s also a moral obligation that the state has to do this.”

One person who expects her relative’s remains to be unearthed and finally returned for burial is Tananarive Due, whose great-uncle Robert Stephens was reportedly stabbed by another child at the facility in 1937 but whose remains were never returned to his family. She hopes to clear up the circumstances of his death and bury him in a family plot. Another is Ovell Smith Krell, whose brother Owen Smith ran away from home at 14 and was sent to the facility after being caught with a stolen car. Officials told Smith’s parents that he died of pneumonia after his second escape attempt and was buried on the facility’s grounds, but a fellow inmate told them that Owen was shot by school officials during the attempt and buried to hide it.

Students like Richard Huntley, who was sent to the school in the late fifties, told Al Jazeera that he and his fellow inmate-students were forced to do farm work under dangerous conditions under threats of worse. “This, to me, is a form of slavery,” he said, “because they, damn it, beat you to what they wanted you to be.”

Boys who didn’t comply with orders were sent to “The White House,” which Huntley likened to a “torture chamber.” He said, “If you didn’t know how to pray [before being sent to The White House], you learned pretty fast.”

That 239 days of vacation is just fucking disgusting.

When I was raising my 2 sons by myself, I used to work my vacation week (or 2 wks when if was “given”), if the employer allowed it. Even holidays sometimes, for the extra pay for school clothes, etc. We weren’t exactly what you’d call “middle class” and their father refused to pay any more than the $100/mo he reluctantly sent until they reached 18 (for both), even though he had a pretty well paying job as a civilian nuclear sub inspector for the Feds (he had started another family, also). Because I would have had to go to CA (later WA) to try to get more support (and the tens of thousands he owes in alimony which he never paid), I had to let it slide. No money for airfare to fly back and forth for court.

It used to take a lot more time in the workforce to make a decent salary, even w/lots of experience, and women were stymied in what they were “allowed to do” at companies. So, you could forget promotions—that didn’t start changing for women until I had been in the workforce for at least 25 yrs, and even then, women without kids were given preference.

We never went anywhere for a “real” vacation, although they went to a Y residence camp a couple of times on scholarships and an aunt & uncle would sometimes treat them to small trips. I could never justify having the power cut off, or cutting the food bill to allow us to “squander” that kind of money.

From the way I’ve lived my life, you’d think I’d be a total reactionary, but I have better values than that. Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if the boys’ father belonged to the TP out on the West Coast, though.

239 days of vacation is enraging. Aside from company holidays and two days where I was sick, I’ve only taken ONE day off all year. That day was after I busted my ass on a major project proposal, which was due on a Thursday afternoon. I took that Friday off to sleep in and have a three day weekend. That’s it.

Right now I’m looking at my bank statement. The job I have now doesn’t pay much. It’s a salary + commission sales gig, but when sales are slow, I have to live with the base salary alone. That barely covers my rent and bills, and making money stretch to the middle of the month is a real test of my budgeting and coupon clipping skills.

Seeing Congress give themslves almost 8 months of vacation pisses me off. Give me that job with their pay and benefits. I’d make much better use of that time and money. Pfft.

Daylight, alright
I don’t know, I don’t know if it’s real
Been a long night and something ain’t right
You won’t show, you won’t show how you feel

No time ever seems right
To talk about the reasons why you and I fight
It’s high time to draw the line
Put an end to this game before it’s too late

Head games, it’s you and me baby
Head games, and I can’t take it anymore
Head games, I don’t wanna play the
Head games

I daydream, for hours it seems
I keep thinkin’ of you, yeah, thinkin’ of you
These daydreams, what do they mean?
They keep haunting me, are they warning me?

Daylight turns into night
We try and find the answer but it’s nowhere in sight
It’s always the same and you know who’s to blame
You know what I’m sayin’, still we keep on playin’

Head games, that’s all I get from you
Head games, and I can’t take it anymore
Head games, don’t wanna play the
Head games

(Instrumental)

So near, so far away
We pass each other by ‘cause we don’t know what to say
It’s so clear, I’m sorry to say
But if you wanna win you gotta learn how to play

Head games, always you and me, baby
Head games, ‘till I can’t take it anymore
Head games, instead of makin’ love
Head games, oh

Head games, always you and me baby
Head games, ‘till I can’t take it anymore, no more
Head games, instead of makin’ love
Head games

Head games, always you and me, baby
Head games, ‘till I can’t take it anymore
Head games, instead of makin’ love we play
Head games

Can we just dispense with the bullshit that Occupy, AS IT STANDS RIGHT NOW, is somehow indicative of “the left”? That it has found itself hijacked by freaking idiots? That idealistic young people got lead into thinking there’s such a thing as a “leaderless movement”? And that it in NO way is at all representative of THE vast majority of liberals like me? That it is entirely possible that good ideas get ruined by morons who take over in order to profit or publicize themselves? Because that is the reality.

Also, if you have a hard on for anything for more than 4 hours(weeks/months), you probably ought to seek medical attention.

The leaderless movement idea of Occupy was almost certainly a reaction to the history of ratfucking/ COINTELPRO/Pinkerton gunfire that has been the usual greeting reserved for grassroots progressives over the last century.

Just take a look at what the FBI and Hoover did to Viola Liuzzo and her family after her murder by the KKK under COINTELPRO, or what they tried to do to MLK.

leaderless action starts to make more sense, since it complicates organized subversion (but perversely makes other forms of subversion far easier).

Apple strudel I just took out of the oven. The “J” shape has no special significance—the roll was just too long to fit on the tray so I had to curl it around.

I also baked Kaiser Rolls because hey! a day off means I get to do my favorite thing, baking!

The scheduled pie is Blueberry! but I just rolled the crust and put it in the freezer, I can bake tomorrow night or Wednesday.

I use all of my “vacation days” (meager as they are) for the Jewish holidays. If I want to take extra time off, I can “comp” it by working overtime, or take the days off without pay.

If I had been working at the one same place during my entire career, I would have accumulated 5 weeks of paid vacation time!

But I’m a contractor, our vacation plans suck.

re: #63 A Mom Anon

I’m so sorry you are having to go through this.

But the fact is, there are classes in this country, although we like to pretend there aren’t.

Lots of people look down on garbage collectors, trades people, construction workers, clerks, retail workers of all sorts, and consider them idiots because they haven’t had the opportunities some others have had to make a decent salary. They never think of what they might do without people to serve them, clean up their shit, and keep things running in a practical way.

This is the state of the working class in the US. I’ve always considered myself working class because there’s no sense in pretending I’m ever going to be anything else. That doesn’t make me a lesser human being. And it made me want to learn more than would have ever helped me in a mere job—to open new avenues and vistas and an appreciation for what I didn’t, and don’t, know.

I have fought against those prejudices all my life and in some cases it has gotten me into trouble as being seen as “getting above my raising”. I just said the hell with that, and continue fighting, even though I don’t have to any longer, at least for myself, and it makes me content.

Sort of. Wonder why so many lefties and progressives are sucked into the Greenwald/Snowden hero worship? It was no accident that Bradley Manning supporters and Anon were at the core of the Occupy movement. Wonder why progressives are totally unrealistic about Obama’s anti-terrorism operations and position on Syria? That’s why Code Pink, ANSWER, Socialist Worker, Etc were so active in the Occupy movement. None of the relationships originated with Occupy (with the possible exception of Anon) but these relationships were mainstreamed and continued by OWS. Which is why I thought the associations with radicals helped to make it a toxic and destructive movement. I opposed these groups then and I oppose them now. We are seeing the fallout from association with radicals and cross contamination of ideas.

Which is why I thought the associations with radicals helped to make it a toxic and destructive movement.

In hindsight, Cope Pink seems to have been correct about the war in Iraq (and I was wrong!), while Anon and the Manning/Snowden supporters have been radicalized by decades of bad faith over-classifying by the government. Again, look at the abuses of COINTELPRO, infiltration by the FBI into civil rights groups and the recent revelations that the NYPD has been infiltrating anti war groups and mosques outside of New York State…and you get the feeling that , even if you can’t agree with everything they say…they still have a point. The various branches of government …state and federal at least, have been acting like agents of the privileged and not the executors of the will of the people. That is why you saw these kinds of populist movement on both the left and the right. When the TEA party first came togEther, an awful lot of what they were saying sounded like stuff from Occupy…until Dick Armey and the professional GOP types took over at the top

(bottom up grassroots movement are anathema to the GOP, which is one reason why it operates cohesively. The grassroot take orders from the top, which was perfected under Bush the lesser when the White House had weekly strategy calls with Mega Church ministers to manage messaging to the GOP base in church)

I believe it was my great-great-grandfather who worked in a coal mine in Michigan.

While my great-great-grandmother was pregnant with their youngest, the mine shaft had flooded and the elevator operator was drunk. The crew my grandfather was in drowned, because the operator didn’t respond to their cries. My great-great-grandmother was generously allowed to continue to live in company housing and brought in washing to make ends meet.

Unions were instrumental in changing working conditions like that. I want to try never to take what they did for granted, and I am vehemently against the demonization of unions and all they have achieved.

Daytime meals: I ordered a 3-lb. roast. Should be good for 3 days.

Desserts: apple strudel, kugelhopf & blueberry pie! Most of it is going into the freezer because we have 3 MOAR WEEKS OF HOLIDAY EATING!!11

re: #119 Justanotherhuman

I don’t know about most people, but I’d rather live in a world with garbage collectors and construction workers, and no brain surgeons than the other way around. Not that I have anything against brain surgeons-I just think we need the basics before the luxury stuff, so to speak.

re: #177 klys

I know and thanks to everyone upthread who offered hugs and stuff. I feel so bad for The Husband right now, I can’t even help support us financially at all.

Years ago we made a deal, even before our son was diagnosed with autism, that raising him and being his speech/occupational/whateverheneeded therapist was my job. At the time, it would have literally cost me money to go back to work and make sure he had what he needed. Specialized daycare alone ate all my salary plus about 20 dollars a week. So I was sneaky. I made one or two appointments with every kind of therapist I thought he would need(insurance covered nothing, btw, don’t even get me started on the amount of time I spent on that). I took a notebook, wrote down titles of all the books I could find on office shelves, looked at where they were educated and found what I could online at those schools, and grilled them all over and over about what I should be doing and what they would do if we came back. I spent hours in the library with the kiddo, feeding him Goldfish crackers and letting him color while I read everything I could find. It paid off, he could read before kindergarten, he began talking a blue streak at age 4, and he would later do so well with sensory integration therapy that he’s now a huge heavy metal fan and loves live music. Elementary school was awesome, the special education teachers and paraprofessionals worked miracles. I just wish there had been help after Grade 6. A whole other rant believe me.

So when I hear right wing people stereotype liberals as trust fund elitists or lazy parasites or Code Pink/ANSWER/Occupy/Greenwald-Snowden-Manning loons that don’t work or love their families or take care of themselves or care about their kids, I take it fucking personal. Those fools comprise maybe a few thousand out of the millions of us out there working and busting ass to take care of bidness. I love my country, enough to want it to be better and to realize it isn’t perfect and can always use a boost upwards. I won’t ever apologize for that. Ever. We’re working ourselves into the ground to do the right thing here, and the second some wingnut hears we’re a liberal family they accuse us of, well you know what they do.

It’s also funny, all that COINTELPRO stuff, I don’t think any right wing groups were ever targeted in all that, funny ain’t it?

Hey, drop out Snowden got $62/hr. The sysadmin job I linked here required NO education, but where do you get the one year experience? I think your hubs needs to learn to do a better job of selling himself, something I’ve always been a bit slack at myself. : )

Maybe he could do some online courses at the local cc (that shouldn’t cost a lot—he might even get some money to do it) and get a bit more assured in his knowledge, then try to sell his talents to a few local companies? Develop a network of like-minded people. Most people don’t understand the techy stuff—they’re just users, like me (I am dumber than dirt about tech), don’t want to deal with it, and would appreciate someone who could keep the machines going so they can do their own jobs. I mean, I could type 100 wpm, but I couldn’t fix a typewriter.

COINTELPRO

In one particularly controversial 1965 incident, civil rights worker Viola Liuzzo was murdered by Ku Klux Klansmen who gave chase and fired shots into her car after noticing that her passenger was a young black man; one of the Klansmen was acknowledged FBI informant Gary Thomas Rowe.[49][50] Rumors were spread that Liuzzo was a member of the Communist Party and abandoned her children to have sexual relationships with African Americans involved in the civil rights movement.[51][52] FBI records show that J. Edgar Hoover personally communicated these insinuations to President Johnson.[53][54]

Her oldest son sued the FBI in the late 70’s, and the case was thrown out. He was hit for nearly 90,000 dollars of legal fees for the government until the ACLU got them reduced to 3,000. His sister says he went into the anti government militia movement and went underground after 9/11. Kinda hard to blame him considering what was done to his family.

Actions have consequences…and the government (and American people) never seem to learn this. If you don’t want people going off the deep end and joining militias…don’t do things like this.

re: #196 celticdragon

Her oldest son sued the FBI in the late 70’s, and the case was thrown out. He was hit for nearly 90,000 dollars of legal fees for the government until the ACLU got them reduced to 3,000. His sister says he went into the anti government militia movement and went underground after 9/11. Kinda hard to blame him considering what was done to his family.

Actions have consequences…and the government (and American people) never seem to learn this. If you don’t want people going off the deep end and joining militias…don’t do things like this.

but if your bailiwick is anti-subversive, driving a small number of people off the deep end might actually be desirable in an amoral fashion, since it would guarantee you foes to fight.

Note the word ‘amoral’. Anyone who would actually do what I just talked about would be an amoral asshole of a high order.

How about not bombing, but regulating the hell out of them? As it is, there are no regulations with any teeth, most oversight agencies have little power beyond a barest of rules, little enforcement. Hard to do with K Street having the power it does over Congress, but that’s where the core of the problems lie. Businesses have proven over and over and over again that they won’t do the right thing without being forced, nothing will change til they are.

Antivaxxers piss me off to no end. They not only harm their own kids, but they’re endangering their communities as well.

Not everyone can get a vaccine. If you’ve got immune deficiencies or, depending on the vaccine, egg allergies, or if you’re too young or too old, you aren’t able to get vaccinated. That means that you’ve got to rely on the herd immunity to keep you safe.

And that herd immunity has failed in some places - like with the measles vaccine in that Texas megachurch that preached anti-vaccine nonsense, other insular communities, and among the ignorant. People have gotten deathly ill; some have died.

Folks in NY - especially upstate - have a similar adversity to General Electric, which dumped thousands of tons of dioxin and PCBs into the Hudson River. A whole bunch of the upper Hudson River will be dredged, though there’s evidence of contamination all the way down the river to NYC.

Similarly, there’s another huge superfund site on the Passaic River (from Garfield at Dundee Dam to the Newark Bay) but the company that did the majority of the dumping went out of business before they could begin compensating for the cleanup. The dredging for that is underway - 200,000 tons are going to be removed, dewatered, and parts will be capped.

Monsanto was heavily involved in that whole mess:

Landmark Toxic Site Deal Struck : Environment: A developer and six chemical firms will buy the Houston neighborhood and pay more than $207 million in damages to families.

Six companies that used the site to dispose of wastes settled with the families. The largest amount, $39 million, came from Monsanto Co., which had sent the most toxic chemicals to the site for burial in unlined holes in the ground.

The $207.5-million total is the largest ever in a toxic waste case, said Lois Gibbs of the Citizens Clearing House for Hazardous Waste. Residents of Upstate New York’s Love Canal, including Gibbs, received $20 million in 1985.

The customer is not always right, it is true, but the company is not always right either and it behooves the observer to try and distinguish the difference in a conflict.

It’s alright. It’s something I don’t really think about until he goes off on an anti-Obama Rush-Limbaugh-esque rant. He’s really a piece of work, that man. I love him dearly.

My dad may not be full-blown wingnut but he definitely votes Republican. I love him dearly and we have a mutual agreement to not talk politics.

re: #63 A Mom Anon

I don’t blame you, Mom Anon. You have every right to be angry and upset. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I feel the same way, not just about Congress, but about useless media pundits who make their living by spewing hatred and disdain for we the great unwashed. Sirota and Greenwald need to get real jobs doing useful work - like building maintenance, garbage collection, construction, something that adds value to people’s lives. It amazes me how the Rethug rhetoric in this country has changed from valuing “hard working Americans” to denigrating people who do real work. It boggles my mind. I’m pissed, too.

I appreciate it…as we have discussed this topic before, I was well aware that you are not in favor!

I am a recovering addict myself (and one who does not see “session drinking” as part of beating addiction), but I would never dream of imposing my lifestyle choice on others. I am truly coming from a place of wanting to keep myself and my loved ones as safe on the road as possible and people under the influence in taxis or helped out by designated drivers. Disagree with me and the proposed change, but I hope the sincerity of intent is clear enough.

re: #250 lawhawk

The fastest way I can think of to get my high school friends on FB to agree on anything, aside from posting something about growing up in the 80’s, is to mention Monsanto. The ranting starts and the haterade gets passed around.

The Brio site, and by extension Monsanto’s involvement, were all over the local community news for YEARS while it was all going on. Everyone had an opinion, largely against the companies and the toxic dump site.

Here’s a nice upbeat wedding story:

For years she had been taught to hate by the Westboro Baptist Church, but 27-year-old Lauren Drain has now found love - and security - away from the cult that had dominated her life for so long.

Ms Drain, a cardiac nurse, was walked down the aisle at her wedding to David Kagan by two other former members of the anti-gay and anti-Semitic cult after her family refused to attend the ceremony.

Megan and Grace Phelps-Rope, the granddaughters of the church’s founding pastor Fred Phelps, left the cult earlier this year and were able to fill part of the hole left by Ms Drain’s family.

‘It was amazing having them by my side. Just a year ago I never thought i would see them again and here they were, during one of the most impotent days of my life,’ she told Mail Online.

‘They stepped in to make it even more special for me. We are extremely close now, and see each other as often as we can.’

The former member of the church, which is known for picketing the funerals of U.S. servicemen, has also been supported during her marriage and wedding preparations by her husband’s family.

‘They have accepted me as one of their own,’ she said. ‘At our wedding they presented me with a “Welcome to the Family certificate” signed by all 31 members of the family, including the two pets.’

She added: ‘David’s sister, mother and father treat me amazingly and were there for me during every part of the wedding planning process.’

Mr. and Mrs. Kagan, may your union be blessed, long, and happy.

The word you’re looking for is rubes.

Your ideology…and thus your “wing”…is meanlingless if you’re a sucker. And there’s a lot of suckers out there who imagine that their suspicions—which match their biases—immunize them to all manipulation.

Case in point, libertarians forming personality cults around Rand, Assange, et cetera. And “freedom-loving” people that project all kinds of rugged individualist stuff onto Putin, even though he’s an old-school KGB operative who helped sell Russia to its oligarchs.

I’m in the naturalist camp. Minimal reworking the photos beyond cropping, straightening, and some contrast/color fixing. I’ve thought about doing some HDR to work on really contrasty photos but haven’t had time to try it out. I appreciate the art form of those images, but it goes beyond depicting what was there, to imposing your own tastes on to the scenery.

But, like you said - to each their own.

/rant on

Last night I invested over 90 minutes of my time in creating a page on the current debate about lowering the legal limit for drunk driving. I was aware that my view in favor of such a move would not be popular, and clearly it wasn’t. I posted with the idea of having some discussion on the topic, and got it. I disagree with almost every response, but I can live with that. However, one lurker called “jehosaphat” has seen fit to downding each of my comments defending my position. Well, obviously anyone registered here has the right to up or downding as they see fit…and I consider whining about downdings to be bad form in general. Even so, I think it is fairly shitty to downding my every comment there without stating a position. As I mention the conversation going on is contentious, but also civil. There was not a single downding there at all until this lurker who has never posted anything here (at least not in many months) got involved.

legal limit here is .04
