McCain Playing Poker on His iPhone

Are we boring you?
Politics • Views: 84,372

Yep. John McCain was playing poker on his iPhone during the Senate hearing on action against Syria.

As the hearing continues, our ace photographer Melina Mara reports she spotted Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) “passing the time by playing poker on his iPhone during the hearing.”

Candy Crush Saga.

Angry Birds would have been inappropriate, but funny, actually, since it involves flinging projectiles at a hostile force.

5 HappyWarrior  Tue, Sep 3, 2013 3:14:14pm

He really should be embarrassed. This is a guy who for a long time and I’ll add myself among them saw him as a respectable statesman who cared more about country than party. I mean I didn’t even diddle around on my phone when I was in class. The least McCain can do is actually listen to the Secretary of State and various representatives of the administration. I said it already but man am I glad that Obama is president rather than him. McCain’s an ass. Not the worst member of his party but he’s an ass.

Where Congress stands on Syria

Lawmakers appear to be tentatively dividing into four camps over military action in Syria. Each dot represents a lawmaker who has indicated how he or she might vote. Although it’s not yet certain how the lawmaker will vote, the sentiment of the quote is mapped across the four categories.

I’m starting to think that every Senate office employs a 13 year old to run the Twitter feed. That’s a really childish response. No, it’s not a scandal Senator but it makes you look like a childish dickhead and for someone who once ran for President on the slogan of Country First it makes you look unprofessional but then again, you did think Sarah “Let Allah Sort It Out” Palin would be a good number two to run this country.

There’s no downside to McCain. It’s not what is said at the hearings that matter. It’s what he gets to say on the Sunday talk shows. Seriously, I’d love for a TV interviewer to ask him why he should be taken seriously if he can’t pay attention for three hours.

Full disclosure: I never really liked the fucker - even when he “does the right thing” like calling Kilmeade on his bigotry yesterday on Fox.

That was exactly it. He said if Syria imploded and there was a possibility of CWs falling into the ‘wrong hands’, that ‘boots on the ground’ might be necessary to secure them.

Two points. First, Assad has apparently USED THEM, so I don’t really think they’re in the RIGHT hands at the moment. Second, I sure hope that people understand the reason to secure > 1e6 lb of chemical weapons in that situation.

And C), Kerry chose a bad time to say something out loud that I really, really hope everybody already knows.

The editors of National Review Online have come out in favor of US action in Syria. nationalreview.com

The comments are heavily against this position, and some are very amusing. My favorite so far is this:

Sorry guys. Congress ought to pass a resolution stating that the Constitution grants the Executive with all the power and authority he needs to act as Commander and Chief as well as to conduct American Foreign policy. All previous presidents have done so.
Congress is not tasked with either of those two functions and cannot perform them well as intended by the founders.
By his passing the ball to Congress, he (once again) insults the Constitution, the office of the Presidency as well as Congress itself. The politicians in Washington may all want to act presidential in front of the press, but foreign policy is clearly not their job. Congress gives advise and consent, not permission. Congress can remove a President who can not or will not perform his Constitutional function.

This clown actually wants to impeach Obama for not usurping the Congressional power to declare war.

You know, I actually had to dissassociate from a college friend when I suddenly started getting emails from him showing graphic images of Chinese protesters lying in pools of blood, with captions like “That’s how you get ‘er done!” and other Duck Dynastic shite. It’s amazing what is kicking around in the caverns of people’s heads that you would just never expect to find flapping around there on little bat wings.

But I’ve noticed that Charles is getting rather petty, as I said, and it’s always against the republicans (I admit, I haven’t done a thorough analysis - so please correct me if I’m wrong and please accept my apologies).

If this is the case - then it’s a clear sign of bias.

So, any representative sample of stupidity is going to have a similar right/left ratio.

I’m sure the Nazis in the 1920s had all sorts of sob stories about how their enemies were grinding them into the dust.

The reason for all this self-victimization mumbo-jumbo is that it ‘justifies’ taking extreme measures against the identified enemies if the extremist group ever gets enough political power.

To McCain’s credit, he was bashing Islamophobia on the curvy couch at Fox and Friends this morning.

thinkprogress.org

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) blasted Fox News host Brian Kilmeade for linking a commonly-used Arabic phrase to terrorism, during an appearance to bolster his case for a strong military response to Syria President Bashar Assad’s alleged use of chemical weapons. The Arizona senator has long called on the Obama administration to arm the rebels fighting the Assad regime and is pressing Congress to adopt an broad-based use of force resolution.

“Would you have a problem with an American person saying ‘thank God? Thank God?’” McCain asked, clearly irritated. “That’s what they’re saying. Come on! Of course they’re Muslims, but they’re moderates and I guarantee you they are moderates.” Kilmeade didn’t respond to McCain and quickly moved on with the interview.

Yeah, but I would rather the quips focus on the shit he’s done instead of being associated with making fun of someone’s physical appearance or characteristics.

That being said, I will grant that you didn’t necessarily intend to reference his time as a POW. He may not be a hero anymore by any stretch of the imagination, but his service still doesn’t deserve derision and I don’t believe you think it does either.

Honestly, it seems like a lot of fuss over a one sentence riff on something another poster said. AFAIK, McCain isn’t actually suffering from erectile dysfunction, so you’re not making fun of any actual characteristic of his, apart from maybe being a cranky old man.

Or did I offend people by making a remark that could be construed as ageist and sexist, and making light of mood disorders?

Honestly, it seems like a lot of fuss over a one sentence riff on something another poster said. AFAIK, McCain isn’t actually suffering from erectile dysfunction, so you’re not making fun of any actual characteristic of his, apart from maybe being a cranky old man.

Or did I offend people by making a remark that could be construed as ageist and sexist, and making light of mood disorders?

We (I think rightfully) mock the right-wing meme about how all their ‘women’ are attractive while all liberal women are ugly as shit. In a lot of ways, this is equivalent, because it is making the issue about physical characteristics (true or not) instead of policy positions or shit that actually matters from a political point of view.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

Not all older folks turn into grumpy old men/women, but there’s a reason for the stereotype: just about everyone knows at least one.

Let’s also face it: the initial pushback came because the date that darth pulled out happened to be during McCain’s POW time - and as such, the comment came across as referencing that.

I don’t care what side they’re on, if I’m going to criticize someone for their politics, I refuse to do it in a way that denigrates their military service when the service offered was genuine and took real sacrifices. I didn’t think this was controversial and that’s what generated the initial pushback.

Of all the top Bush administration Iraq War supporters, Rummy probably has one of the biggest chips on his shoulders.

First, he got fired the day after the 2006 midterms, essentially taking the fall for Bush as the War became overwhelmingly disliked.

Second, Obama ran against Cheney-Rumsfeld-Bush as much as he did against McCain, a smart strategy when your opponent’s party is unpopular and occupies the White House. Like Cheney, Rummy seems to have a personal ax to grind with Obama after the deserved rhetorical pummeling he had to hear from Obama for two years on the campaign trail.

The irony now is quite clear. Obama may follow the same road as his predecessors, who he so harshly criticized. I have no problem with military strikes. But the adventurism of Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld should put the fantasy of Middle East nation building projects to rest, once and for all. Or at least for more than zero years.

Sure, but OTOH, his victims got final closure. He was convicted for his crimes, his house and posessions destroyed and pulverized, and now he’s saved everyone the time and money to keep his ass on this mortal coil for the next 1000+ years.

The discussion about Smartphones and old people was interesting.

I used to laugh at the KISS principle; now I embrace it as a survival tool—use a landline almost exclusively. Still drive a 5-spd. The keys on the cordless are small enough already, and my fingers are no longer nimble enough to manipulate the tiny keys on a cell phone without a lot of frustration. And I take enough grief from my g-son in keeping the other techy stuff in the house running while I run everything else. I also know more about cars than he does. He’s a child of the computer; I’ve seen technology of every sort come and go.

My 3 yr g-g-son can use the Xbox as well as I can. He’ll surpass me in another year or 2, because he’ll care more about it than I do—who knows what will be available when he’s his dad’s age?

Meanwhile, the microwave is eating my glass French dessert plates. I don’t think they were made to heat up Hot Pockets.

Ah yes, I was in love with John Thaw when Morse was first shown on PBS. Netflix has “Lewis” which I watch. I thoroughly enjoy “Midsomer Murders”, too, and “Luther” (yes, Idris Elba is fascinating, plays a very complex character), although they aren’t PBS. I’ve also been re-watching “All Creatures”—those Yorkshire farmers!—they have every episode, from the 70s on, I think (and interesting to see how Peter Davison’s career developed over the years—he’s been in several series I’ve seen). I may be something of an Anglophile in my TV tastes. But some of the new series aren’t up to the old snuff, I don’t think, they seem sort of “Americanized” and it detracts from their unique Britishness.

271 Decatur Deb  Wed, Sep 4, 2013 2:31:03am

re: #270 Justanotherhuman

The Lewis seasons are a joint British/Boston project—might have Americanized it a bit. (Hathaway is surprisingly physical on occasion). We got the first season and pilot of Endeavour, showing the 1960s Morse joining the force—sort of dark and spooky. Great cars, though. In the pilot he walks past the used Mark IV Jag he will someday own.

Conservatives don’t like PBS because of the “public” part. They figure any federal tax money going toward broadcasting = commie propaganda, or something like that. It’s the same with NPR, the National Endowment for the Arts or the NEH.

Sesame Street is inclusive. It’s set in an urban environment, perhaps even the “inner city,” where people seem nonetheless pretty happy. It empowers kids. These are all scary ideas for a lot of RWNJs.

276 Justanotherhuman  Wed, Sep 4, 2013 3:55:35am

I’m wondering how many in NATO or the UN would vote if it were “white people”, not those “Muslim Arabs” who were being gassed?

Anti-Muslim sentiment runs high not only in the US but in Europe and other countries with majority white populations as well.

The racism against Pres Obama is buttressed with the hatred of Muslims.

That’s where a lot of this “sentiment” (which isn’t policy, BTW) against a tailored target in Syria to stop the chemical attacks by Assad are coming from. They don’t care any more about that than they do about the slaughter of Africans by Africans. All those people are “expendable” as long as it doesn’t affect white people.

Keep “sentiment” on Hallmark cards and take a hard look at what’s going on. Sentiment is what keeps people in horrible, abusive relationships, for instance, and prevents us from thinking rationally about our own well-being. Drama solves nothing, but love and caring, invoking real human values, can when it’s done with clear thinking.

re: #276 Justanotherhuman

I cannot call it “logic” but the line of thinking seems to be that since Obama is such an existential threat to this country, anything that harms his image and makes his job harder is a necessary thing.

I don’t know whether it was or not. I’m just saying that if the prison screwed up, any proceeds from a settlement or lawsuit should go to his victims. But he had 30 minutes in which to hang himself, since the guards only make rounds every 30 min. And are we sure he was on “suicide watch” anyway? If he was, and those cells aren’t monitored with CCTV (which they should be, regardless), the prison has some explaining to do.

MoJo discovers that apocalyptic wingnuts are apocalyptic:

Oh Magog! Why End-Times Buffs Are Freaking Out About Syria

[…]

In March, Rosenberg met privately with Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Rep. Louie Gohmert in Austin. Gohmert was such a big fan of the novelist he brought a copy of Damascus Countdown as a gift to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 2011. (Because he’s Louie Gohmert, the Texas congressman knocked over Netanyahu’s coffee cup and bottled water in the process of handing over the book.) In April, he discussed Damascus Countdown at the Heritage Foundation, a leading conservative think tank. Rosenberg did not respond to a request to comment from Mother Jones.

Rosenberg is not the only Christian thinker making a buck off the burden of Damascus. Jan Markell, on whose End Times radio program Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) has frequently appeared, blasted out an email to followers last summer warning that the Burden of Damascus may be close at hand. She reiterated that position in an interview with OneNewsNow last week. Walid Shoebat, a self-described “ex-terrorist” who is a frequent guest at right-wing confabs, told birther news site WorldNetDaily in August that while he wasn’t sure the Burden of Damascus was imminent, “We can sense the beginning signs for the fulfillment of Isaiah 17’s destruction of Damascus when we witness the influx of refugees from Syria to Jordan as predicted by the prophet Amos.”

Snowden ‘strange guy’ set for tough life: Putin

google.com

“You know, I sometimes thought about him, he is a strange guy,” ex-KGB spy Putin said in an interview with state-run Channel One television.

“How is he going to build his life? In effect, he condemned himself to a rather difficult life. I do not have the faintest idea about what he will do next,” Putin said.

The case has intensified strains between Russia and the United States and prompted US President Barack Obama to cancel a visit to Moscow for a bilateral summit ahead of the G20 summit in Saint Petersburg this week.

“Well, it’s clear we will not give him up, he can feel safe here. But what’s next?” Putin said, suggesting that Washington, which wants to put him on trial, may in time reconsider its stance.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. L’Shana Tova to all those about to celebrate Rosh Hashana. Been busy finishing up my dinner prep. The tzimmis and roast chicken is done. Sides are likewise done. The desserts have been baked (and taste tested for quality control).

Even stood in line for more than an hour the other day to get challahs from one of the best kosher bakeries in the country (Zaide’s in Fair Lawn), which has me thinking about convincing the mrs to try her hand at that, but the store’s challah’s are so good, you can be forgiven for the wait. It’s also prep for standing during Kol Nidre and penance for eating such sinfully good baked goods.

I’ve seen technology of every sort come and go.

Happy 50th birthday, Compact Cassette

It’s the same age as me :(

And now I’ve given away most of my CDs (several years ago when I realised I hadn’t unpacked them from the house move years before that)

I still miss the “thingness” of old vinyl records and their cover art
But it’s great being able to carry around so much music, old and new, when I travel

I swore I’d be the last person on earth to get a mobile phone - the idea of being contactable at any time was my idea of hell.
Then I went free-lance and needed one to be employable, now I can’t imagine life before them, and I get annoyed with people who don’t leave theirs on!

They’ve totally revolutionised the experience of going to music festivals - long gone are the days of “I’ll met you left of the monitor tower at 4” and made all such social stuff easier and more spontaneous (having a map and gps on a smartphone helps too)

Still have not the slightest interest in facebook, I’m waiting for whatever replaces it…
