They’re gonna vote against authorization, so why not just haul their sorry asses in early and put it all to an end now. Stop wasting people’s time with this illusion of a functioning government.

And a big part of the problem

Barton: Being A Good Scientist Or Mathematician Requires A Proper ‘Fear Of The Lord’

“When we had a God-fearing approach to education,” Barton asserted, “our educational knowledge was so much higher than what it is now. Just something as simple as having prayer in school and having a daily Bible reading. Did you know, back when we did that in schools, America was number one in the world in literacy? We had the highest literacy rate in the world. The last forty years we said ‘ah, we don’t want any religion in schools.’ We’re now 68th in the world in literacy. Our knowledge of even how to read has fallen through the floor; correlates exactly to the time we said ‘oh, fear of the Lord can’t be part of our knowledge”.

Ours is a kind and loving God, who will fuck you up if you ever fucking cross him, so watch yourself bitches. God bless.

The most quoted and interviewed nobody in the world:

With no special skill or expertise, Greg Packer has been quoted by media outlets nearly a thousand times. Since his name first appeared on newsprint, in 1995, he’s spoken to reporters on subjects ranging from the war in Iraq to the release of the first iPhone. Greg’s campaign to be the most quoted man in news has been so successful that the Associated Press sent its staff a memo that essentially banned interviews with him. That hasn’t stopped Greg’s “career.” Individually, his quotes are utterly unremarkable, but, considered as a whole, they add up to a rather stunning body of work.

Kerry Blows Up At GOP Rep For Harping On Benghazi At Syria Hearing

“I cannot discuss the possibility of the U.S. involvement in the Syrian civil war without talking about Benghazi,” Duncan said, questioning Kerry at a Wednesday hearing.

“The administration has a serious credibility issue with the American people, due to the unanswered questions surrounding the terrorist attack in Benghazi almost a year ago. When you factor in the IRS targeting of conservative groups, the AP and James Rosen issues, Fast and Furious and NSA spying programs, the bottom line is that there is a need for accountability and trust-building from the administration,” he said. “The American people deserve answers about Benghazi before we move forward in Syria’s civil war.”

That set off Kerry, who forcefully condemned Duncan for his claims.

“I’m not going to sit here and be told by you that I don’t have a set of — a sense of what the judgment is,” he said. “We are talking about people being killed by gas and you want to go talk about Benghazi and Fast and Furious.”

“Defund the ACA to pay for Obama’s War!” coming soon.

Oh, it’ll be coming, though the fact that the Arab League will help underwrite the cost of the US action may take the teeth out of that.

Well, that and the fact that so few people actually support defunding Obamacare, even among self-identified GOPers. 30% of GOPers may want it repealed, but far more are realizing that it’s the law and it’s going to happen - and that they may even appreciate its benefits (the GOP has been chaotically evil in hyping how bad the law will be, but when you identify specific parts of the program, most people think it a good idea - like eliminating preexisting condition limits or extending coverage to dependents through age 26).

Okay, who is the cantaloupe who didn’t vote?

Also, 7th County in NM is doing Same Sex Marriage.

New Mexico’s Grant County will soon become the seventh county in recent weeks to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Grant County Clerk Robert Zamarripa said his office will begin issuing licenses to same sex couples on Monday, according to the Associated Press. The clerk said he will comply with a district judge’s order issued following a lawsuit brought by a lesbian couple.

Zamarripa’s decision came the same week that Los Alamos County Clerk Sharon Stover refused to follow a court order to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Stover must appear in court to argue why she should not have to issue the marriage licenses.

A number of New Mexico clerks recently took legal action to push the New Mexico Supreme Court to rule on whether all clerks in the state have to issue licenses to same-sex couples.

If I am not mistaken, Los Animas county is hard-right and full of engineers.

Or the 100,000+ killed in the course of the civil war, the gross violation of human rights under the Geneva Convention, and specifically targeting civilians.

Just a statistic. For the bean counters when the butcher’s bill is tallied.

Bashar’s killed far more in his quest to rid Syria of his enemies than his dad Hafez ever did. And that’s saying something. Bashar’s war against his opposition is a meatgrinding affair - not the stark and extreme use of force that his evil dad did at Hama. But he’s using his dad’s playbook with ruthlessness that his father would appreciate.

showed bipartisan support for a strike, but bipartisan opposition as well. Yes votes included Senators John McCain, Republican of Arizona, Bob Corker, Republican of Tennessee, and Jeff Flake, Republican of Arizona. No votes included Democratic Senators Tom Udall of New Mexico and Chris Murphy of Connecticut. The Senate’s newest member, Edward Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts, voted present.

Ed Markey, who called on the WH to seek Congressional approval, and when put up for a vote, decided to show he was present:

The 10-7 vote

And, to a large extent, I think that vote does reflect the national feeling I think is out there that has serious reservations about going in, but also still sees the need to do so sooner rather than later.

Does it threaten to become another military quagmire for the US? Yes. Will it rile up anti-US rhetoric and possibly cause more attempted anti-US terrorist attacks? Probably. But, do we also want the degrading standard against use of chemical weapons; e.g. mustard, sarin, etc. to continue eroding? No, I don’t think so.

So, we work towards coalition building, and I think also work on Russia and China via backdoor diplomacy to be willing to cut Assad loose by allowing a UN resolution to get past the Security Council.

Well, I find it difficult to totally blame the voters. It’s hard to elect good representatives from the pool that actually wants the job.

How we can make the job more attractive to people with more integrity, I don’t know. How we can keep the job from eroding that integrity, I really don’t know.

in practice, since god isn’t around to enforce it, this means ‘shut up and do what i tell you’

Yes, absolutely, there are many people for whom that’s exactly what “god fearing” means. Some of them make good money.

And there are other people for whom it means: “I’m scared to death of something, I feel better when I call it “god”, and I want you to be filled with fear, like me. So show me some humility! The last thing in the world I want to see is people who aren’t saturated with fear.”

The night PBO got re-elected was our second wedding anniversary, and we made fresh pasta together while drinking some wine and served that with a tasty mushroom and olive sauce. Ohio was called right in the middle of cooking. It was a fantastic night.

Theodore Shoebat: ‘Outlaw The Sodomite Before He Outlaws You’

Walid Shoebat regularly appears on conservative media outlets as he will reliably attack President Obama as a secret Muslim who is aiding a nefarious plot to bring sharia law to the US, and he often brings his son Theodore along on with him to warn of the Islamist conspiracy. Theodore wrote on Shoebat’s website yesterday that there is a threat just as bad if not greater than the imposition of Islamic law: gay sharia.

He argues that “the homosexual agenda” is “about conquest, and the persecution of Christians.”

“If they succeed, we will live under an outright Homosexual inquisition, and if they really had their way, they would build a homosexual empire.”

Shoebat claims that gay people are “striving to establish a sodomite despotism” that will restore an “ancient utopia much more depraved than now” when homosexuality “was part of religion and government.”

GAY SHARIA! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!

Al-Qaida-linked rebels attack village in Syria

Al-Qaida-linked rebels launched an assault on a regime-held Christian mountain village in the densely populated west of Syria and new clashes erupted near the capital, Damascus, on Wednesday — part of a brutal battle of attrition each side believes it can win despite more than two years of deadlock.

In the attack on the village of Maaloula, rebels commandeered a mountaintop hotel and nearby caves and shelled the community below, said a nun, speaking by phone from a convent in the village. She spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

Despite The GOP-Led Attacks Against It, Planned Parenthood Isn’t As Controversial As You Think

In fact, the majority of people in the United States don’t support defunding Planned Parenthood. After the 2012 election, polling found that Mitt Romney’s explicit anti-Planned Parenthood stance didn’t sit well with voters, 62 percent of whom didn’t support cutting off federal funding for the women’s health organization. A more recent poll found that the majority of Americans, and 60 percent of women, have a favorable view of Planned Parenthood. Predictably, those numbers rise among people who have had a personal experience with the organization, either if they’ve received health services there themselves or if they know someone else who has.

Call me a traditionalist, but pulled pork with tenderloin? Save the pulled pork idea till you have a butt roast. Costco sells ‘em 2 to a bag, for cheap.

Tenderloin, I like to marinate and grill. Either a Hoisin Garlic marinade with black bean garlic sauce, or an ale marinade, with garlic, lemon, and worcestershire. Or, hell, dust it liberally with garlic salt and grill it.

The “race realists” over at National Racists Online are at it again:

NRO never had a problem with the southern strategy first used effectively by Nixon, then other Republicans over the years.

This is simply a contemporary journalistic variation on the southern strategy. Call blacks the real racists (Holder! Obama! OMG!), then suggest that they’re dangerous in one way or another (e.g., ruining education), but do it all in a coded way that is slightly less overtly offensive. Then stand back while the base slobbers all over the red meat and gets raging hard-ons. Mission accomplished.

Clearly NRO’s political analysis is aimed at its white conservative audience. They don’t really give a shit about blacks. They don’t even try to engage them.

IMO, the issues are at the top level. If we commit to no regime change and to not tilting the balance in the Syrian civil war, then it pretty much follows that we are debating a slap on the wrist that will be seen as meaningless by all, especially Assad, Iran and Russia.

If we end up with a more substantive response, the top level plan needs to deal credibly with a post-Assad scenario.

For what it is worth, my preference is that if the US goes with air strikes as a response, we go in hard —- take out every available regime target that is clearly military. It is hard to see how that wouldn’t significantly alter the balance of power.

re: #292 FemNaziBitch

AFAIK, the extent of the threat is in allowing the use of chemical weapons in warfare to go unpunished. This would presumably lead to a proliferation of such weapons, in the hands of countries who hitherto have had limited or no arsenals of them, and that would lead to their being used.

If, as the UN and UK votes seem to indicate, pretty much nobody gives a shit anymore - well, alrighty. We now live in a world where chemical weapons are not considered any worse than bombs and bullets, a little less than a century after the International Community banned them as too horrific to allow.

IOW, it’s the place of the International Community to do something, but nobody seems inclined except us and France, and not very many of us, at that.

The IDiots had a conference in which they discussed with teachers, including public school teachers, on how to insert religion into their teaching and schools.

Evangelical magazine World reports (approvingly):

Peeking outside the Darwin cage

To protect the identities of some attendees, WORLD agreed to use pseudonyms (designated with an asterisk).

DAVID BROWN*
David Brown,* a public school physics teacher in his 30s, doesn’t like to simply follow the rules, especially when it comes to science and evolution: “When the culture tells me I’m not allowed to think outside the Darwinian box, it makes me want to think outside the Darwinian box.”

[…]

PHOEBE JOHNSON*
While the Texas Board of Education changed the wording of its science curriculum in 2009 to make room for teaching alternatives to evolution, the school district where Phoebe Johnson* teaches took a hardline stance: Darwinism is true; everything else is wrong. Johnson, a high school biology teacher, soon started to feel the heat. Although her classroom curriculum only required a summary of evolution, Johnson was also part of the school’s Christian club, where she held a talk about how science and religion can coexist.

“I think I have a middle-of-the-road approach to it,” Johnson said. “One thing about the ID movement is that the people involved are really doing a good job being objective and trying really hard not to get wrapped up in politics or religion but looking at it for what it is.” [*cough*]

[…]

LORI MCKEEMAN
The Potter’s School is an online Christian school popular among homeschoolers and missionary and military families. The lead science teacher, Lori McKeeman, 58, has been teaching students about intelligent design and the Bible for seven years. She traveled from her home in Pensacola, Fla., to the Discovery Institute’s seminar to learn the latest ideas from intelligent design scientists. “With science, you have to continue professional development,” she said. McKeeman and another Potter’s teacher are considering using the Discovery Institute’s new private school science curriculum, Discovering Intelligent Design.

[…]

At its heart, “Intelligent Design” is really about bringing in sectarian religious beliefs into public schools.

In my perfect world, we could right all the humanitarian wrongs. I’d like to see us address seriously the ones happening in this country before we tell other’s how to live their lives.

Any course of action, including inaction, has consequences that one must accept. Even those who are in favor generally agree there are no good options.

Ohio earthquakes around Youngstown directly blamed on deep waste water injection into a well. It’s a method for “disposing” of leftover fluid from fracking operations.

And the article states that one of the issues is that the deep fault connections are not known and thus a pressure wave from high pressure injection can trigger quakes along a fault line.

Unstated is that the same faults and breaks can provide connections between the deep strata and shallow strata and thus allow contaminants being “disposed” to potentially migrate upward and eventually contaminate shallow water-containing strata that we otherwise deem safe. Which is one of the long term risks of the whole fracking enterprise in regards to waste water* disposal.

* - And some of the contaminants in the waste water are actually picked up via the shales the water was pumped into and out of. Radon for instance.

Guy Shouting at Anthony Weiner was Upset He Married an Arab

Anthony Weiner’s mayoral campaign just posted a longer video of the candidate’s shouting match with a Jewish voter in Borough Park, Brooklyn on Wednesday morning. Beginning around 3:46, the same man depicted arguing with Weiner in the earlier video says, “You’re a real scumbag” and later adds, “You’re married to an Arab,” referring to Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin. Within moments the men begin shouting at each other over the voter’s insult.

This significantly alters the context of the earlier video, which seemed to be about the Jewish voter’s issue with Weiner campaigning despite his serial sexting.

I honestly have no beef with the young earth creationist that simply asserts that God created everything 6000 years ago and made it look much older. Among other things, that is a logically unassailable position.

I also have no beef with teaching this in Sunday school or in church services.

The problems start when lies are systematically deployed in support of the false proposition that empirical evidence (i.e., science) leads to creationist/ID conclusions.

re: #343 EPR-radar

I’m well aware of the unfortunate puritan legacy in the US. However, there remains a big difference between being religious, or even hyper religious, and supporting the lying agenda of teaching creationism/ID as science in schools .

I honestly have no beef with the young earth creationist that simply asserts that God created everything 6000 years ago and made it look much older. Among other things, that is a logically unassailable position.

Yeah, but you also can’t prove that the universe wasn’t created just a few minutes back, as a going concern. I call it the “God as Collosal Jokester” belief.

I also have no beef with teaching this in Sunday school or in church services.

The problems start when lies are systematically deployed in support of the false proposition that empirical evidence (i.e., science) leads to creationist/ID conclusions.

That’s the key difference. You have no problem with them believing their superstition. They have a REALLY, REALLY BIG problem with you NOT believing it.

Speaking of the hyper-religious and their failed worldview in light of science, Denny Burke, one of Mullah Mohler’s bulldogs at his seminary, writes on his blog:

Okay to change a child’s sex but not his gender?

James Kushiner asks an insightful question that exposes the moral confusion of our day. In essence he asks why it should be legal to change a child’s sex but not his gender.

The question is provoked by the recent bill signed into law by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. The law prohibits any attempt to change a child’s “gender expression.” […]

This inconsistency testifies to a much deeper spiritual rot. It exposes what has always been at the heart of the sexual revolution. The Creator’s purposes for male and female must give way to the creature’s autonomous will (Gen. 1:27; Matt. 19:4). If a guy feels like he’s a girl, then he is one even if his biology says otherwise. The Creator’s distinction between male and female must bend to accommodate the sovereign will of the creature. Thus changing the body is better than changing the mind.

[…]

Burke’s argument will only make sense to those who are presuppositionally set in his camp. But that is not the issue I want to raise here.

Rather, it is Burke’s statement ” the Creator’s distinction between male and female …” is based on a demonstrably false notion of “distinction between male and female.”

This week I came across the following new discovery about the Y chromosome:

Boy interrupted: Y-chromosome mutations reveal precariousness of male development

The idea that men and women are fundamentally different from each other is widely accepted. And throughout the world, this has created distinct ideas about which social and physical characteristics are necessary in each gender to maintain healthy human development.

However, social revolutions throughout the last century have challenged traditional ideas about not only which traits are normal and necessary for survival, but also how humans acquire them. Thanks to a new study from researchers at Case Western Reserve University, science is continuing the charge.

By studying rare families in which a daughter shares the same Y chromosome as her father, Michael Weiss, MD, PhD, and his colleagues at the university’s School of Medicine have determined that the pathway for male sexual development is not as consistent and robust as scientists have always assumed. [And which Burke asserts is absolutely God-given true.]

A team led by Weiss, chairman of the Department of Biochemistry, the Cowan-Blum Professor of Cancer Research, and a professor of biochemistry and medicine, has published a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that examines the function of the SRY gene. This gene is responsible for initiating the process that leads to male development.

[…]

In fetal development, a gene located on the Y chromosome, called SRY, begins the process that leads to male development. All fetuses initially develop with female tissues, no matter what the sex will be at birth, so the master switch is responsible for initiating the transformation of female tissues into male tissues. From there, the testes develop and produce testosterone, which eventually forms the male’s external genitalia.

The university’s study employs mutated SRY genes shared by a father and a sterile XY daughter. Females usually develop with an XX pair, but, in these families, the father instead produced a daughter with an XY pair. This occurs during fetal development when the SRY gene’s master switch fails to trigger. Internal female tissues, such as the uterus and fallopian tubes, continue to develop but are dysfunctional and infertile.

“Yet the father has the same Y chromosome and the same mutation as the daughter,” Weiss pointed out. “And since he is a fertile male, we know that the switch must be poised right at its edge.”

[…]

To summarize the finding, the sex differentiation region of the Y chromosome “turns on” neither reliably nor identically in all carriers of the Y chromosome.

What this means is that males are indeed different in their “maleness”, and this is a function of molecular processes.

The creationists, like Burke, refuse to accept what has been demonstrated throughout the last couple of centuries.

They simply refuse to accept reality.

Well, they let it happen…

She sailed away on a sunny summer day
On the back of a crocodile
“You see,” said she, “he’s as tame as tame can be,
I’ll ride him down the Nile.”

The croc winked his eye as she bade them all goodbye
Wearing a happy smile
At the end of the ride, the lady was inside,
And the smile was on the crocodile!

That’s a 2-for-1 slam of RINOs by the TP. First, McCain, McConnnell and Boehner are all pro-immigration reform (to one degree or another), so they’re undocumented. Fucking hahaha (at least in TP minds).

Second, they occasionally support the demon Dem in the WH—at least on foreign policy—so they’re closet Democrats too. Again fucking hilarious to a tea partier.

This is the major malfunction of the TP: the “you’re with us or against us” approach to government. Refusing to compromise is somehow a virtue to these people, who seem unaware that we live in a huge, highly diverse pluralistic democracy.

I’ve already seen some RWNJs starting to float the meme that since Syria isn’t a signatory to the Chemical Weapons Convention, it’s perfectly legal for them to use Chemical Weapons within their own borders.

Question for the Lizards, who among you a year ago would think that the RWNJs would be supporting Putin and Assad as Leaders who should be supported?
