Reposting from downstairs since this is relevant to current discussion:

Syria has refused to declare its chemical weapons arsenal or sign the CWC for decades. It now decides to do so. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

It’s Assad’s attempt to try and avoid airstrikes by the US/France.

Russia may be putting the screws to Assad to do this, but Assad’s running out of things that he can do short of giving over the stockpiles unilaterally and handing over those responsible for the use of chemical weapons (if he hadn’t authorized them).

Assad would not be agreeing to anything like this unless the US had threatened use of force. The diplomatic out proffered over the past 24 hours may be a Russian plan, or Kerry may have offered it, or it may have come out of discussions from the G20 last week.

The outcome of those diplomatic efforts remains to be seen. The onus is on Assad to eliminate its weapons stocks; how to do that is part of the question being addressed at the UN Security Council. Assad’s unilateral decision to join the CWC indicates that he’s trying to move faster - a timeline issue that may indicate that he thinks the US/French might go after him sooner, rather than later. Or that his chemical weapons stockpiles are at greater threat from the rebels than he’s let on - now that he used them on the rebels, the rebels will have no restraint to return the favor - even if it is beyond the laws of war, the Geneva Conventions, or the CWC.

Not long ago, deliberation, cooperation and affirmation from Congress was said, nay insisted upon as a better plan. Too many of those voices are now objecting to exactly what they wished for under GWB.

What… they assumed that plan would be easy? Fast? Cheap? Wildly popular? Talk about rose colored glasses! Of course this is the right way to go. It’s a hard complicated way to go that calls for patience and does not lend itself to ratings bait.

Some people are just never satisfied.

The narrative is ephemeral and irrelevant.

Conservative “policy” in the US has devolved into a seething, white-hot ball of primal rage in response to Obama electoral wins in 2008 and 2012.

They aren’t even pretending to have actual policy positions other than “lower taxes on the rich” any more.

Good points. It is also interesting to note that it is pointless to engage in a saber-rattling exercise before taking military action that is already certain to occur.

Saber-rattling as a way to get others (Syria, Russia) to take the diplomacy seriously, as may have been the plan here, makes much more sense.

AP source: Kerry to see Russian FM in Geneva

bigstory.ap.org

WASHINGTON (AP) — A State Department official says President Barack Obama is sending Secretary of State John Kerry to Switzerland this week to discuss a possible deal on Syria’s chemical weapons with Russia’s foreign minister.

The official said Kerry would meet with Sergey Lavrov (SEHR’-gay LAHV’-rahf) in Geneva on Thursday to try to reach a deal on a U.N. Security Council resolution that would require Syria to give up its chemical weapons or face consequences.

The official was not authorized to discuss the mission publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The last-minute trip reflects a flurry of developments that have occurred since Russia said Monday it would push Syria to get rid of its chemical weapons stockpiles and Syria agreed.

Not for nothing, but I swear, this narrative that certain PBO critics & hell that some alleged supporters have that PBO is just the luckiest SOB on the planet is just getting ridiculous. I think at some point it may be realized that maybe it’s not jusy “luck” at all, but ya know actual planning and decision making?

At what point will PBO be actually credited for having actual political skill? I suspect it’ll be once he’s out of office.

“Luck” only gets you so far. The luck construct is exactly what McCain and Clinton and even Romney all used as a way to discredit the achievements by then candidate and President Obama.

Contributing luck to all that basically negates the completely crappy way all 3 Obama opponents ran their campaign. Naw that black guy didnt beat he was just lucky that’s all. Shoot if they’d had his luck well hey things woulda gone differently…YEAH RIGHT!

Honestly luck is what Romney and McCain both had. Romney, he the son of a wealthy businessman and later governor and McCain the third generation Annapolis man. It was funny to hear Romney talk about bootstraps and stuff when he by and large made it to where he did because of his Dad. Obama, like him or not is more less the true American success story. Raised by a single mom and he accomplishes all that he has.

Testosterone comes from the testicles, and it stands to reason larger testicles might make more of it, or release it differently, and we know that testosterone has an effect on behavior.

Seems reasonable enough.

For now, I think Obama got a better result than he even dared to hope. First, military action in Syria is unlikely to go well, and will be deeply unpopular. Second, it wouldn’t have done anything about chemical weapons. But now, Syria appears to be moving towards signing the chemical weapons treaty and handing over its arsenal for international control. Iraq was moving towards the same point when Bush invaded. But we are not dealing with Bush. Obama is unlikely to rush to a war he doesn’t want. So, we have a situation where the US threatened force, with Syria/Russia complying to re-establish a norm around chemical weapons, which is a better result than military action.

Several progressive blogs have taken up the issue of the textbook reviewers for the TX SBOE and the obvious right wing or religious criticism of parts of the textbooks.

The Dallas Morning News picked up on it in a story yesterday too:

Religious conservatives on Texas textbook review panels criticize proposed science books

None of this is really new news, as we are all aware of the long struggle over these topics, but this paragraph in the DMN article stood out to me:

“I understand the National Academy of Science’s strong support of the theory of evolution,” said Texas A&M University nutritionist Karen Beathard, one of the biology textbook reviewers. “At the same time, this is a theory. As an educator, parent and grandparent, I feel very firmly that creation science based on biblical principles should be incorporated into every biology book that is up for adoption.”

What this demonstrates (again) is that someone can earn a college science degree and even be part of an educational institution and yet choose to disregard what the actual science says.

Never under rate the ability of us humans to lie to ourselves.

Years ago I thought Dennis Miller would be a humorous politician. Then he jumped the shark and joined the RW faction. It all went downhill when he almost single handily ruined Monday night football. Sure by then most American’s wanted to smack his smirky face.
nk and at game time we stubled into the elevatorA few years ago my friends and I got Tickets to the FED-EX Suite for a Pacers game.
We hung out for hours downstairs at the exclusive Pacers club eating and drinking for free. We saw Dr. Dunk, Larry Bird and some cool people. We got drunk and stumbled into the elevator to take us to the Suites..And who was in the elevator..Why Dennis Miller.
We were loud and saying shit to Dennis and he moved into the corner with his peeps.
Damn..Miller is really short..OK it was kindof funny laughing looking down at him while he had a worried look in his eyes…But Paulie busted up the elevator in laughter.
He totally ripped off the line from the Wedding crashers..Paulie is a monster of a man with long dark hair and as the Elevator stopped he stepped in front of Miller and said in a booming voice, ’ Say something funny,,funny man! I thought I’d die as he and his peeps rushed past us out the door.. One of his peeps turned around as they briskly ran to down the aisle a

Speaking of evolution, I see that Attenborough’s latest statement about human evolution is making headlines. Most people seem to be taking his statements a bit out of context, as Attenborough’s statements were focused on natural selection and not all of evolution. He’s probably still wrong (I think he is), but once again we see that most people don’t realize that evolution includes more than natural selection.

May I ask what operating system this handheld uses?

We do a lot of cellphone/handheld forensics, and users in our office use Android, iPhone and Blackberry. It is amazing how much personal data a smartphone retains, but they’re usually not this overt.

If it’s spelling out permissions like that, that says Android to me.

Android spells out if they need certain things even for minor purposes. A good developer will indicate why they need that in the update text.
