I used to live down the road from him. One time my friends and I worked our way down Old Hickory Lake fishing and ended up in his backyard.

Nah, he’s too selfish to turn his attention to something like this, in his adopted country.

Brazil data suggests spike in Amazon deforestation

reuters.com

“If substantiated by follow-up data typically compiled by the end of the year, the increase would confirm fears by scientists and environmental activists who warn that farming, mining and Amazon infrastructure projects, coupled with changes to Brazil’s long-standing environmental policies, are reversing progress made against deforestation.

“Last year, Amazon deforestation was shown to be at a record low.

“The likely increase in deforestation has prompted concerns that Brazil may have let its guard down and provided an opening for loggers, ranchers and others eager to develop parts of a forest that is seven times the size of France.”

I find much in common between beavers and wingnuts:

The beaver doesn’t chew through the whole trunk, just enough to make it unstable. It then backs off and lets the wind do the rest.

I wish they’d take the lesson from bull elks instead. They’d be much less prevalent in public discourse then.

In cities, Google Maps tends to work fine on my phone. So that’s where I do rely on it (we have data service on the iPad too, so you can have a larger form factor for the maps).

Out in the middle of nowhere, where my husband likes to end up, cell service never exists. This is why we have >15 atlases now.

Pity the poor speechwriters.

Seems simple enough to me. As I see it, Obama needs to make a case that the CW in Syria have to go. If this can be done peacefully great, if not, too bad.

He should be consistent with Congress and still seek a AUMF that would only be triggered if there is inadequate progress on removing CW from Syria in a definite time frame. Diplomacy will work better with that kind of threat in the background.

This is just my opinion. I’m sure there are other reasonable things Obama could do with the Oval Office time.

That’s about the only thing I can think of as well. “There’s some diplomacy in the works, negotiations are on going….” usually isn’t a topic for an oval office speech but there’s not much else to say. I don’t think there’s a chance in hell of a resolution passing congress anytime soon. That’s still looking like a dead end.

Jordanian MP shoots rifle during Parliament session (Video!)

“An ongoing dispute between Jordanian parliamentarians resulted in one MP shooting an automatic rifle at a fellow lawmaker during a Parliament session on Tuesday.

“MP Talal al-Sharif pulled out an AK-47 rifle and shot at fellow MP Qusay Dmisa during a public session of Jordan’s Parliament, but did not manage to wound him. Sharif was then arrested and a special session later held to examine the incident.”

Obama Admin Keeping Syrian Rebel Leader Out of DC, Congressional Sources Say

Long heralded as the poster child for Syria’s moderate rebels, Idriss has yet to travel to Washington to make his case for U.S. intervention — and it’s not for lack of trying. Congressional sources and members of the Syrian opposition tell The Cable that the Obama administration has delayed or cancelled at least three scheduled trips for Idriss to come to Washington since March.

“The White House has stepped in at the eleventh hour to cancel planned trips in which tickets were bought and hotels were booked for Gen. Idriss to come to Washington,” a frustrated Congressional aide tells The Cable. “It’s beyond me why the administration is trying to prevent a very articulate person from answering the fundamental question that almost every lawmaker wants to know: Who the Hell is the opposition?”

Suddenly I find myself wishing there was a good jazz lounge around here.

I had a friend once who had a jazz club in Madison. After about a year he had to shift to Blues because the patrons at the jazz shows didn’t drink enough - no joke. With his overhead and paying for the band, having 3/4 of his tables nurse a round of wine just didn’t bring in sufficient income.

Switch to blues and his income when way up. I stopped hanging anywhere near as much, though.

Hmmm…wonder whose congressional aids?

“The Supreme Military Council does not have a lot of traction on the ground,” said Washington Institute for Near East Policy senior fellow Andrew Tabler. “[T]hey haven’t been supported with arms, and they’re spending a lot of time in Western capitals, instead of inside the country spreading their influence.”

Still, some hawks in Congress say those tactical concerns should take a backseat to the job of convincing lawmakers to authorize a strike in Syria. “Lawmakers, especially Republicans need to know more about the opposition,” said the congressional aide. “How many are radical? What percentage is politically-predisposed to hating the West? You saw that question from lawmakers all last week.”
