Glenn Greenwald’s Euphemism of the Day: He Promoted a Far Right Militia Because “Neutral Linking”

Backpedaling, with insults
Weird • Views: 23,188

You may remember this post from yesterday, asking the question: Why Is Glenn Greenwald Promoting an Extreme Right Wing Militia?

Just to remind you, this is the advertisement from the crazed right wing militia Oathkeepers that Greenwald was promoting, via reason.com (and the article to which he linked, by the way, was a shameless whitewash of this radical right wing group):

Today, Mr. Greenwald is trying to dance away from hyping the Oathkeepers and their disgusting advertisement with this tweet:

That’s almost cute how he can’t bring himself to address me by name, even though he certainly knows where it came from. But he still manages to toss in a gratuitous insult, so there’s that.

As for “neutral linking,” all I can say is, “lolwut?!” Here’s his tweet:

He was promoting this ad because it was pro-Snowden. There was nothing neutral about it; he very obviously approved of it.

Oh wait — he also came up with another excuse:

Space constraints?

Right, because “a coalition of current and former military, police, and other public officials” is much shorter than “Oathkeepers.”

UPDATE at 9/12/13 3:34:15 pm

A reader emails a current photo of one of the Oathkeepers’ ad displays in a subway:

A sincere, heartfelt ‘lolwut,’ to be sure.

2 Kragar  Thu, Sep 12, 2013 11:45:12am

Because typing “Oath Keepers” uses up more characters than “A coalition of current and former military, police, and other public officials”.

Neutral Linking has been an accepted internet tradition for many, many hours now.

RT ≠ endorsement.

I get that part (and that’s from his own twitter handle description).

But when you specifically post something, max out your limited characters to describe an organization so as to avoid the actual name of that organization, and then say that you’re not endorsing its actions even as you’re endorsing its support for your own pet cause?

Sorry, but that’s one pretzel too far in the logic circuits.

OathKeepers. That’s the organization.

Fewer keystrokes, which means more room for exposition. Instead, he spends those precious characters on touting the fact these are former soldiers/LEOs. We just have to have blinders to what else they are.

OathKeepers. They’re a bunch of extremists.

But they’re a bunch of extremists who just happen to agree with his position on Snowden. So for Glenn that’s more than enough. Stop harshing on his dudebros.

The company you keep Glenn. It’s boggling.

Report: Hamas gives landmines to Egyptian Islamists, trains them in planting car bombs

The Hamas Islamist group ruling Gaza has been teaching Egyptian Islamists how to plant bombs in cars, Egyptian state television said on Thursday.

Hamas also gave 400 landmines to Egyptian militant groups, said the television. Hamas is an offshoot of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood.

Hamas rejected the allegations on Thursday.

Those floods in Colorado are bad.
I guess what they need is “More Gunz!.”
//

But seriously, take a read of some of the fallout:
In Broomfield, U.S. Highway 287 collapsed when a culvert washed out.
At least one earthen dam gave way southeast of Estes Park, the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park.
A lot of towns need assistance, and we cannot get through.
A 20-foot wall of water was reported in Left Hand Canyon north of Boulder.
A bridge washed out near Highway 287 and Dillon Road, sending at least three vehicles into the water.
About 2 feet of water was standing on U.S. Highway 36.
A National Guard helicopter requested to help pull people from their homes hasn’t been able to take off because of fog and low cloud cover throughout the area.
Mudslides and rockslides were reported in several areas.
3 people dead so far.

What gets me about the whole “Death Panels” thing is this: The people who complain that certain ineffective treatments might not be covered under Obamacare don’t think ANY treatments should be covered. They don’t believe there should be ANY government healthcare AT ALL, so what are they bitching about?

As far as I’m concerned, you don’t get to complain that the program you think shouldn’t exist AT ALL doesn’t do ENOUGH.

Anyone remember Jim Fixx? He thought he was taking care of himself, too, but he hadn’t.

en.wikipedia.org

On July 20, 1984, Fixx died at age 52 of a fulminant heart attack, after his daily run on Vermont Route 15 in Hardwick. The autopsy revealed that atherosclerosis had blocked one coronary artery 95%, a second 85%, and a third 70%.[3] Still, medical opinion continued to uphold the link between exercise and longevity.[4] In 1986 exercise physiologist Kenneth Cooper published an inventory of the risk factors that might have contributed to Fixx’s death.[5] Granted access to his medical records and autopsy, and after interviewing his friends and family, Cooper concluded that Fixx was genetically predisposed (his father died of a heart attack at age 43 and Fixx himself had a congenitally enlarged heart), and had several lifestyle issues. Fixx was a heavy smoker prior to beginning running at age 36, he had a stressful occupation, he had undergone a second divorce, and his weight before he took up running had ballooned to 220 pounds (100 kg).[6]

Also, why is it that propagandists like Greenwald can never find, you know, some democratic socialist politician in some liberal democracy like Sweden to quote for criticisms of US policy? Why is it always some vicious thug who imprisons critics and runs sham elections?

Greenwald hangs with the Cato Institute, and thus is likely the kind of libertarian who actually doesn’t have a lot of respect for democracy, and views socialism as the ultimate evil.

Also, look at John Galt imagery and tell me that libertarianism isn’t deeply into imagining oneself as the elite deciders, not one of the irrational rabble.

I’ve got a Total Wine nearby and a BevMo within shouting distance. Both of which are ok. I can get growler fills at either of those, but they don’t have a place to belly up and have 1-2 pints. In addition, I really do feel like the beer selection at Whole Foods is a touch better.

Yep. There’s heredity, and there’s environment, and there’s behavior, but the key is how they interact. My mother’s grandmother lived to be 100, and her mother lived to 97. Mom smoked for 50 years, and died at 89 of Congestive Heart Failure. Even so, she beat her Dad, who died of CHF at 69. It’s sobering to realize you don’t just inherit longevity, you also inherit brevity.

When I was younger, I dreamed I’d inherit Dad’s health - he’s 95 and still not on any prescription meds. But I got Mom’s hypertension.

Such is life.

Yeah. In my family, we all remember how Grandma Dix lived to be 100, and how Nana lived to be 87, and Pap lived to 93. We forget about how Pap’s mother died in her 60s, and his Dad died in his 70s, or that Pap-Pap Daddy died at 69. But we get reminders, like my brother having an MI at 61.

So the company is bleeding money. Their answer? First, lay off the West Coast Regional Sales Director (i.e., my boss) because he’s somehow at fault. Then lay off the sales person focusing on Southern California to put all your eggs in Silicon Valley. Finally, lay off the one sales person in Texas (i.e., me) and close your office here, pushing all that additional territory on the girl who is moving to Chicago this month, expecting her to pick up the slack for the entire Central time zone.

Seems legit.

Damn. Just damn.

A fire that started at Kohr’s frozen custard has spread to other boardwalk businesses, including FunTown Pier, where rides damage by superstorm Sandy are ablaze, Police Chief Francis Larkin said.

Emergency personnel first came to the boardwalk at about 2:30 p.m. for a report of smoke. A plume of gray smoke now stretches as far north as Ortley Beach as fire crews fight to douse the blaze.

The Breaking News Network also is reporting that the fire has reached six alarms, caused fires at buildings as far as four blocks away and resulted in water supply issues. Jackson, Manchester and Bayville firefighters were called in to assist.

It is still uncontained and spreading to adjacent structures. It’s also moving onto the just rebuilt boardwalk (rebuilt after Sandy). Thankfully no injuries, but it looks like the buildings are going to be totaled.

It’s going to wipe out whatever was left standing or what was just rebuilt after Sandy.

There are wind gusts of up to 50 mph in that area spreading and fanning the flames.

Shit, I’ve been there before. Company was bleeding money because it was (basically) a brick-and-mortar place unable to adjust to new web competitors. So the solution was to first slash the marketing department, and then the sales department (I was caught in that second one).

Hang in there. If you’ve done well in your job, recruiters will want your skills, and getting laid off in this economy isn’t the scarlet letter that it can be in good times.

The aide, Jason Rostan, told the State Journal that he didn’t push the process server but acknowledged following him and trying to force him to take the court papers back. Rostan said the man tripped and fell while refusing to accept the paperwork.

The process server’s account of what happened on Sept. 3 is contained in a sworn statement attached to a lawsuit filed in Dane County Circuit Court. The suit seeks to force Vukmir, R-Wauwatosa, to hand over documents from a May conference of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

Rostan “started to call me a low-life jerk and (expletives)” in Vukmir’s Capitol office, Bruce Lowrey, co-owner of C. Lowrey Process Service, said in the affidavit. “When I got outside Jason was running after me and he pushed me and knocked me down and threw the paperwork at me and continued to call me all kinds of (vulgar) names.”

These are the people that call teachers thugs.

Good article at Salon today, dropping a troll hammer on US libertarians. salon.com

The article is structured as 11 questions to put to libertarians as a hypocrisy test, and is well worth reading in its entirety. As an appetizer, these are the questions.

1) Are unions, political parties, elections, and social movements like Occupy examples of “spontaneous order”—and if not, why not?

2) Is a libertarian willing to admit that production is the result of many forces, each of which should be recognized and rewarded?

3) Is our libertarian willing to acknowledge that workers who bargain for their services, individually and collectively, are also employing market forces?

4) Is our libertarian willing to admit that a “free market” needs regulation?

5) Does our libertarian believe in democracy? If yes, explain what’s wrong with governments that regulate.

6) Does our libertarian use wealth that wouldn’t exist without government in order to preach against the role of government?

7) Does our libertarian reject any and all government protection for his intellectual property?

8) Does our libertarian recognize that democracy is a form of marketplace?

9) Does our libertarian recognize that large corporations are a threat to our freedoms?

10) Ayn Rand was an adamant opponent of good works, writing that “The man who attempts to live for others is a dependent. He is a parasite in motive and makes parasites of those he serves.” That raises another test for our libertarian: Does he think that Rand was off the mark on this one, or does he agree that historical figures like King and Gandhi were “parasites”?

11) Libertarianism would have died out as a philosophy if it weren’t for the funding that’s been lavished on the movement by billionaires like Thiel and the Kochs and corporations like ExxonMobil. So our final question is: If you believe in the free market, why weren’t you willing to accept as final the judgment against libertarianism rendered decades ago in the free and unfettered marketplace of ideas?

re: #150 Ian G.

Shit, I’ve been there before. Company was bleeding money because it was (basically) a brick-and-mortar place unable to adjust to new web competitors. So the solution was to first slash the marketing department, and then the sales department (I was caught in that second one).

Seems to be a pattern, then. Company’s been around for 30 years. I suspect this is a big part of the problem. When there are newer, more agile companies out there doing the same thing but faster and cheaper because they’re on the web, it’s only a matter of time.

I started here last October. They hired a Marketing Director not long after that after a six month search. She lasted six months, at best. They then decided to kill their internal Marketing and just outsource it. Now they’re “reorganizing” Sales. But how the hell does butchering your Sales department help you bring in money when by your own admission you’re at 2/3 of your budget for the year? It makes no sense.

I see a merger and/or a dissolution in the next couple of years if they’re not careful.

Hang in there. If you’ve done well in your job, recruiters will want your skills, and getting laid off in this economy isn’t the scarlet letter that it can be in good times.

I can console myself knowing that when I’m asked why I’m looking for work or why I left, I can honestly say that corporate HQ closed my office and downsized. I’ll be okay. It’s just a pisser in the short term.

Much to my dismay, I find that the burrito place two blocks away which I successfully ignored for a year makes the best burritos in the world, ever. Last week I got a green chile pork one, and it was the best burrito I ever ate. So I got the same thing this week. It’s the second best burrito ever. (This is in the hand-held category, although I don’t think it would be rated any differently if plated and smothered.) Eventually I hope to try some other menu items.

Dismay because I managed to lose 5 pounds recently. I’m not sure I can maintain that now.

Need to make a few batches of meatballs soon and freeze them as well.

Tossing 8-10 frozen ones in about 20 minutes before serving the sauce worked real well for thawing them and letting them add to the flavor. And they also held up real well in terms of maintaining shape without being too dry. (And odd thing was using rolled oats as one of the binding ingredients.)

My saltine meatloaf came out kind of soggy and crumbly (but tasty!) so I will probably ditch the Saltines in favor of oatmeal and cut back on the number of eggs next time, since I bumped up the Worcestershire sauce and mustard.

Nice and tangy though.

Nice and tangy though.

I use dry mustard, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and a dash of red pepper for internal spicing. Glaze the top with “Werewolf Sauce” - which is a hot pepper sauce from a small company in Illinois. Sort of like A-1 sauce with a spicy kick. Alternative to that is using Pic-a-pepper sauce which is a sugar cane-based Jamaican hot sauce.

I wouldn’t go all oatmeal though - maybe cut the Saltines by half and replace that with the oatmeal.

Oh, are you cooking the meatloaf in a loaf pan, or on an open sheet to allow the grease to cook out and flow clear? That has a definite effect on the texture and the need for outer glazing.

Rifles near Appleton farmers’ market lead to police, debate

Two guys walking to Appleton’s downtown farmers’ market on Saturday — while carrying AR-15 rifles on their shoulders — swiftly attracted some gunpoint attention and handcuffs from Appleton police.

Whether that’s surprising depends on where you stand about Second Amendment rights. One of the men happened to record the encounter, now making the rounds on the Internet, where at least some gun rights advocates are outraged by the police response.

The men, Charles Branstrom, 28, and Ross Bauman, 22, also were wearing holstered handguns. About six minutes after they are stopped, one officer sees Branstrom’s camera, confiscates it and attempts to turn it off, but stops only the video. The device continues recording audio of police officers for about 45 minutes.

Ultimately, police release both men without charges or tickets

How does social media work again?

Brazil’s Rousseff targets internet companies after NSA spying

uk.reuters.com

Some European countries already require certain sensitive personal data to be stored locally. Microsoft, Amazon and other big providers of remote computing services already have data centers in those countries so their customers can comply with local regulations.

Social media may be more difficult to govern. If a Facebook user in Brazil commented on a French friend’s post, for example, it’s not clear how that data could stay in Brazil.

Depending on the Brazilian law’s specifics, the impact on companies “could be really big,” said Dennis Julian, a data center expert at Integrated Design Group in Boston.

“The question is how far you go with it,” he said.

Julian said the recent trend has been toward companies consolidating into a few big data centers rather than a lot of small ones. That’s due to high costs - large data centers can cost hundreds of millions of dollars, he said - and problems finding qualified employees for service and maintenance.

reason.com

reason: You’ve also been accused of associating with people who spread paranoia or conspiracy theories. So let me ask you straight up: Do you think President Obama was born in the United States?

Rhodes: Oath Keepers doesn’t get into all of that. I know some of our members think he isn’t eligible to be president. Others think that’s nonsense. I guess if he weren’t constitutionally eligible you could have some chain-of-command problems. But for me that’s all really beside the point. I care about how the structure of the federal government makes abuse possible. If Obama weren’t in office, it would be someone else who had the potential to commit the same abuses.

reason: What about the September 11 attacks? Do you think the government played any role in or had advance knowledge of the attacks?

Rhodes: Again, that’s just something we just stay out of. We have members who believe that, or at least believe there should be an investigation. And we have members who think those members are crazy. We certainly don’t promote the idea. But from my standpoint, it’s just not a topic that’s relevant to what we’re trying to do, so there’s no point in taking a position.

reason: Do you personally believe in either theory?

Rhodes: Well, I’m talking to you as the head of the organization, and the organization doesn’t take a position on either of those issues. So I don’t think my personal views are relevant. It just doesn’t make sense to take positions on issues that may alienate some of our members and that aren’t relevant to our goal, which is educating police officers and soldiers on the importance of not following unconstitutional orders.

The problem I think was I did 2 eggs for a pound and a half, and there was a reasonable amount of liquid on top of that - and my bread-type thing was Saltines, which turned to mush.

What kind of meat are you using? I usually use ground pork and ground beef (not more than 20% fat) and bread crumbs. If I don’t have b/c on hand, I’ll put a couple of slices in the blender and make some. I add basil and 4 oz of tomato sauce to the mix, too, w/the rest on top the last 15 min of baking on an open pan (2 sm loaves); they turn out firm and moist inside . I don’t eat it, but those who do like it that way. Everyone has a favorite recipe. : )

How hard is it to make matzo balls from scratch? I keep mix around to make for the husband when he’s not feeling well (he likes them in chicken noodle soup) but I wouldn’t mind trying to make them from scratch once if it’s not too bad.

This was extra-lean ground beef mostly following this recipe. Since we’re trying to watch calories, I’m trying to stick to recipes with calorie counts and restricting what I play with to the lower-calorie things.

We both liked them, they were just definitely …crumbly.

IIRC, they’re just matzoh meal, eggs, and some baking powder. Dead simple.

I agree with the not driving, but if you have an eye doctor, at least call the office and describe the symptoms and circumstances. If it keeps up, definitely seek medical attention.

Try looking thru a pinhole toward some uniformly lighted background —a wall, a sheet of paper, or sky. That’s a quickie check for cataracts, floaters, etc.

An alternative to a pinhole is to place two fingers and one thumb together, and peek thru the tiny triangle where they meet.

re: #197 Feline Fearless Leader

Mmmm. Meatballs(and Meatloaf).

I use oats too, but I run them through a little food processor to further cut them down. I add with some breadcrumbs and even some finely chopped walnuts, agin run through a processor. Also, toss in some flax seed which helps keep them moist and also adds to hold it all together.

I found the walnuts mentioned in some meatless meatballs mixtures. Its a good way to also cut back on meat but keep protein and flavor.

I freaked some people out one time when I made a tomato flavored meatloaf and cut a thick slab, plopped it over a bed of spahhetti and poured spaghetti sauce on top. What? It’s one big meatball.

Or you could skip that and at least call a doctor’s office with the list of symptoms and see what they say.

My son - the one with ASD - LOVES meatballs, and HATES meatloaf, even though I use the same damned recipe for each. “It’s loaf-y!”, he says.

I use Panko in my meatloaf and meatballs, because oats make me incredibly gassy. Which sucks, because I really, really love steel-cut oatmeal with a little honey and butter, but nobody would want to be near me later.

This is my grandma’s recipe, then my mom’s, now mine. It’s simple and has never failed me.

1lb ground beef(or half beef half pork)
1/4-1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs(depending on the moisture in the beef)
1/4 cup ketchup(plus extra to put on top if you want, before baking)
2 T dehydrated onions
1 t salt
1t cracked black pepper
1 T dried parsley(2-3 T fresh)
1 egg(or 1/4 cup egg substitute)

Combine ingredients til well mixed(smoosh some ketchup on top if you want, it makes a nice glaze on top), form into loaf and add about 1/4- 1/2 cup of water to the pan, bake at 350 for about 40-50 minutes.

The mayor maintains that the legislation would not help the retail workers of Washington, but instead “would result in significant harm to the residents and areas of the District most in need of jobs, economic development, and new amenities.”

Among the mayor’s issues with the bill are that it does not apply equally to all workers, and that it exempts large retailers with existing labor agreements.

re: #266 Backwoods_Sleuth

I’ve had them all my life. Sometimes only once every year or so, sometimes dozens over a few weeks. Very spooky if it’s your first time. But if it’s still happening after 15-20 minutes, get yourself to the ER.

I remember my first very well. Sophomore year literature class. I was asked to read a few paragraphs and when I looked down it started. Freaked me right out. The teacher took me out of the class to what was called ‘the model apartment’ for home economics and had me chill out. She knew what it was.

Comes with artistic, type A, over driven people from my understanding. I had them from 16 until about 35. Eyes first, head thumps second, stomach can even go queasy third. I still feel one try to come on, but I close my eyes, relax my breathing etc., and in minutes all gone.

re: #312 Backwoods_Sleuth

yes, for full-blown migraines, dark quiet room with cool compresses on the eyes is best.
If it’s just the visual, however, nothing will stop it. Just sit back and watch the light show until it passes.

I used to get migraines in my 20s and 30s. Nothing worked except moaning in a dark room, waiting for the inevitable vomiting. Luckily I found that FOR ME, 4 Advil when I was still in the ‘Is this a migraine?’ stage would stop it dead in its tracks within 20 minutes. I have not gone through the whole thing in a couple decades.

BUT, migraines are nothing if not idiosyncratic, so YM will almost certainly V.

I had my first one when I was about 4 years old, while I was sleeping. I always called it the “electric cat dream”.
Had my second one in my mid 20s. I was reading and all of a sudden it was like I was looking through an old piece of window glass that had a crease in it. Freaked me out. Then the flashing lights started and I said “wow! the electric cat is back!”

My Mom HATED ironing. She had an ‘Ironing basket’ of clothes that needed it and couldn’t be faked out by ‘dryer ironing’ them. It would get more and more full, till one night she’d have my Dad drag the ironing board down to the TV room, and she’d iron and watch TV, standing in the doorway from the living room. The living room chandelier would be festooned with hangers of newly-ironed clothes, and shirts and pants you hadn’t seen for weeks or months reappeared in your closet.

Often, they no longer fit, what with growth and all.

So, since there are some folks around here who might know:

How hard is it to make matzo balls from scratch? I keep mix around to make for the husband when he’s not feeling well (he likes them in chicken noodle soup) but I wouldn’t mind trying to make them from scratch once if it’s not too bad.

Just use the Maneschevitz matzo ball mix. Trust me, it’s not worth taking all that matzo and crushing it up.

Oh wait you wanted to use plain “matzo meal”? DON’T DO THAT. YOU DON’T KNOW HOW OLD THAT SHIT IS.

Most store who sell matzo meal really only sell it once a year. And because it doesn’t go bad, most stores, even the ones in heavily Jewish areas, keep the unsold boxes for like forever.

The Maneschevitz mix is just regular matzo meal with some salt added, but it moves faster than the plain kind so it’s less likely to be stale. The mix now comes in a “sodium free” version which is GUESS WHAT—just regular matzo meal.

The mix is the only way to go.

Stupidest GM car EVER: The Cadillac Cimmaron (also marketed as the Catera)

Basically your Chevy Cavalier with some fancy interior/exterior trim and a Cadillac nameplate.

The Cimarron and the Catera were two distinctly different cars: the Cimarron, as you say, was basically a mid-to-late-80s Cavalier with Caddy trim, but the 1997-2001 Catera was a rebadge/retrim of the German-built Opel Omega.

Same concept, different platforms, different times, same results; Americans didn’t really cotton to a foreign-built mid-size Caddy, even though, from what I heard, it was fairly well-built.

437 goddamnedfrank  Thu, Sep 12, 2013 3:59:36pm

It’d be nice if the people bitching about the Colorado recall just admitted one thing, that in a purely pragmatic analysis Bloomberg’s ego and the push for gun control fucked over a lot of people. I’m not seeing much of that.

In the single issue freakout that followed Aurora and Newtown only a few voices dared raise the issues of finite political capital and the historical backlash generated by each new set of gun regs.

Angela Giron’s replacement is a paleolithic, anti abortion bigot who opposes gay marriage because “words have meaning,” and who plans to gut the tax base and fuck over the education system by expanding vouchers. All issues diametrically opposed by Giron.

John Morse’s recall opponent, Bernie Herpin:

Council campaign literature has him staunchly opposed to gay marriage, abortion rights, ‘entitlement’ programs and gun control.

If you want to whine about what happened, fine. If you want to rail against the state of American politics and have a grand old bitch-fest, then by all means indulge yourselves and get it out of your systems.

What you shouldn’t do is forget or go back into denial, then fuck us all over again in another couple of years. Take a good long look in the mirror and own this shit.

Update on CO floods (CNN, but WTH).

cnn.com

Lyons, a small town of 2,000 near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, was cut off by what city officials described as a 500-year flood.

“We ask you to conserve resources during this time,” the city told its residents on Facebook. “We are currently not able to get water or food into the town.”

People were using the city’s Facebook page to search for loved ones, hunt for medicine and even ask for pet food while waiting for rescuers to arrive.

National Guard rescuers reached Lyons with humanitarian aid Thursday night, Prentup said, but the town remained otherwise cut off.

Badge engineering or rebadging is the application of a different brand or trademark to an existing product (e.g., an automobile) and subsequently marketing the variant as a distinct product

I think there are two aspects to that. On the one hand, gun control is not a winning issue for Democrats. But on the other, the Right has gone so far out into the wings on this one, that even laws deemed perfectly reasonable for decades are now too restrictive for them.

E.g., the bill in MO that was an attempt to nullify all Federal gun laws in that state. The Governor’s veto was upheld by a single vote in the MO state senate. Had this passed into state law, we could have had a Federal-State confrontation over guns, which would be the biggest fundraising bonanza imaginable for the NRA et al.

Even if the Democrats were to do nothing on this issue ever again, the RW paranoia is in a positive feedback loop on this issue.
