They will lament that drinking water without benzine, mercury, and high fructose corn syrup is further evidence of the wussification of America.

The Heritage Foundation is now rolling out their new documentary, Fish Fuck in It, to promote skepticism regarding Big Government’s endorsement of water, and demonstrate how the free market could open up to the wide variety of imbibable fluids that can be produced industrially.

I grew up in Watertown. I am a massive fiscal conservative who deplores President Obama when it comes to all things financial. That being said, she is a classy lady who is doing something that is very respectable and reasonable. Let’s lighten up a bit people. Be thankful she cares enough to visit our little town. The message isn’t a bad one.

re: #42 Interesting Times

To the best of my knowledge, yes. A lot of places in the world (past and present) use mild fermentation to take the bugs out of suspect water. Though in most cases it’s not beer like we think of it—filtered, hopped, and very carbonated…but rather very weak, unfiltered, and sometimes with the grains still in it. And not just barley and wheat…corn beer (chicha), millet beer, bread drinks (like kvass), on and on.

(The best source I have on this is Sandor Katz’s Art of Fermentation, which is a very thorough overview of fermenting as food technology.)

GAH, that is another beauty.

A lot of the folks around here have either Triplett or Dusty and while I have a small Triplett (fits in airline overhead bins), I want something else for my big one.

_________

She Who Must Be Obeyed’s is a lute-backed model made of American Cherry. It really really is a tremendous instrument. She uses it for trad, folk, jazz, and even some classical stuff (she is doing a short series with a modern dance troupe where the two musicians, She and her flute partner, are not only on the stage but are part of the choreography. It is set to Hovhaness’ “The Gardens of Adonis” and is called Infinite Shapes.

The Delacor levers on the harp function much like the levers on a pedal harp, not putting a standard sharping lever’s friction and wear on the strings. Saves a lot of money on strings. SWMBO got a Colorado case for the axe, carbon fiber, and the total package (case, harp, cover, strings, and whatever dainties she can stuff into it) comes in under 50 pounds.

Don’t get me wrong, Triplett’s, Dusty’s, Kamac’s, Pilgrim’s, &c, are all great harps, but just *listen* to this thing:

Granted, that’s Ally Bain and Jerry Douglass playing with Catriona, but still. It’s the most beautiful song in the world.

Old-school beer was sometimes augmented with some truly crazy stuff…mandrake root and other stuff with psychoactive effects that increased the intoxication. Though, admittedly, this was less prevalent (and more entertaining) than the tendency of people to have their own beer style defined by whatever local herbs could act as flavoring and preservatives. Nonetheless crazy shit like henbane and amanita mushrooms was sometimes in the mix.

There’s actually still a style of beer called gruit, which is defined by being unhopped and flavored with other adjuncts. I’ve had a few gruit microbrews, but the crazy psychoactive ones that people homebrew (there’s a book of recipes of “Sacred and Healing Beers” out there on Amazon) sound a little…extreme. Particularly when you consider that Asia Minor/Europe didn’t have the cool psychoactives, it had the scary berseker ones.

Thanks. I checked out a bit on henbane, Strange plant. From some descriptions it has some of the funky characteristics of peyote buttons and mushrooms. Grows on bad soil, trash heaps, etc. Found in England and Europe and member of Nightshade family.

And, always have to remember ergot, the alkaloid fungus that grows on rye. There are many historic stories about Middle Age people getting pretty crazy from bad rye. I think a whole French Village spaced out once and had no idea what was happening to them.

Ergot lead straight to LSD. I wonder if some bad rye that had the spores made its way into beer. Ergot can also occur on wheat and barley. Some of that old beer might have been plenty punchy.

It persists in my memory.

I live surrounded by corn, so I always wonder it there’s some way I can cultivate my own.

Mexico City, the night before we flew out, a block or two off the Zocalo. Or Teotihuacan, a little mom-and-pop shop outside the pyramids. Both were fantastic.

It mostly made up for the salmonella. And I did get the secret of tequila in the guacamole, which makes up for an awful lot.

U.S. and Iran are edging toward direct talks

Signaling a possible thaw in long-frozen relations, the Obama administration and the new leadership in Iran are communicating about Syria and are moving behind the scenes toward direct talks that both governments hope can ease the escalating confrontation over Tehran’s nuclear program.

President Obama reportedly reached out to Iran’s relatively moderate president, Hassan Rouhani, through an exchange of letters in recent weeks. The pragmatist cleric is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 24, and after years of the United States cold-shouldering his ultraconservative predecessor, U.S. officials say it’s possible they will meet with Rouhani on the sidelines.

Beyond that, U.S. and Iranian officials are tentatively laying the groundwork for potential face-to-face talks between the two governments, the first in the rancorous 34 years since radical students seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and founded the Islamic theocracy. Diplomatic relations have been broken ever since.

That’s deep inside the city. About 1/2 of the city’s car dealerships sit in the area.

If they flooded out, then downtown likely did as well. This sounds correct, as it seems power has gone out in some areas of Colorado Springs.

Denver, if I am not mistaken, is also now taking flood damage.

Figured it was better than sitting on my couch surfing the net & watching tv and reading the upteenth blog post on Syria/Snowden/NSA/Benghazi/Putin/Republican crazy!

Anyway, I hate to say it but I enjoyed myself.

I’m gonna give it a least one season and then I’m gonna reevaluate it. this is basically the first time I’ve bowled since high school, so almost 20 years ago. Two of the team members bowl at least 2x a week. The other guy is a “newbie” but he just hasn’t bowled in a least a year. Everyone seems nice, but some are really competitive even though they say they’re not. So I need to up my game. I hate being the worse at anything. I am at least consistently the last…lol

So I’m the “newbie” and I HATE it. I can def get competitive and obsessed about it…ugh. I hate being the worse at anything. I’m not trying to be in the pro leagues, but I at least want to hold my own and not feel like I’m dragging the team down!

Oh and now my legs and my “bowling fingesr” are killing me. Who the heck knew it actually pays to be a little in shape or have a little stamina when it comes to bowling.

The sky is blue,
the grass is green,
and America is still America
in 2013:

An Indianapolis news outlet informs us:

‘In search of the truth’

Whether an individual believes that a spiritual being created the universe or that it simply evolved over time, organizers of the annual Creation Evidence Expo promise them an engaging series of activities.

[…]

The expo, which is being promoted with the theme “In search of the truth,” will include interactive displays, books, family entertainment and several exhibits and workshops that discuss the origins and age of the Earth to highlight evidence of the world’s creation by a spiritual being.

Presenters will also offer scientific and archeological “evidence” that they say proves the world was “intelligently designed” by a high spiritual being.

Rev. Frederick Boyd, pastor of Zion Unity and a founder of the Creation Evidence Expo, said its goal is to offer a venue in which educators, pastors and scientists can explore and discuss research that they believe proves that science supports the theory that God created the Earth approximately 6,000 years ago and events recorded in the Bible are historically and scientifically sound.

[…]

Also included this year will be a debate about human evolution and dinosaurs. Prominent speakers include Dr. Jay Wile, a prominent atheist who became a Christian, Dr. Willie Dye, one of the nation’s few African-American biblical archeologists, Dr. A. Charles Ware, president of Crossroads Bible College, and Bruce Malone, scientist, chemist and author.

Within the last quarter century, a movement known as “young Earth creationism” has grown in the Protestant Christian community of the United States.

[…]

Supporters of the movement began to mobilize in 1987 after the U.S. Supreme Court declared that teaching creationism; the religious-based belief that the universe was created by a supreme being, in public schools is unconstitutional.

Until that time, creationism had been taught in many public schools as a theory on how the world came into existence right alongside evolution, the scientific belief that humans evolved into our current form over millions of years from earlier versions of humans that were related to animals.

In 2004, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the teaching of intelligent design (the science-based belief that the world was designed) as a violation of the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment, which upholds separation of church and state.

Since then, creationist Christians have been upset that evolution is essentially the only state-endorsed theory of Earth’s origins taught in public schools. Creation activists in Indiana are working to convince legislators, educators and parents to help bring creation science, or at least intelligent design, back into schools.

[…]

This is not a religious event, it is a science-based educational event,” Boyd said. “Our goal is to promote truth in education, because you can’t teach something unless it has been proven to be factually true.”

Decide for yourself

[…]

Oh yes, decide for yourself. By all means, reality is up for your discretion.

“This is not a religious event…” - these people are serial liars. They have lied so much to themselves that they are incapable of stating the simplest of truths.

Races really only “exist” in our definition of them…they are highly subjective at that.

I note that the speakers at this event are heavily weighted toward opposing the theory of evolution. Wile is a nuclear chemist who found God and Malone is a prolific writer abiut Intelligent Design. I see no mention of Ken Ham, whose creation museum is only a couple of hours away.

The event will also discuss whether races exist. Given that this is an African-American church sponsoring it, I wonder how they will approach that question?

Interesting question, given that Black preachers have been prominent figures in civil rights. I wonder how any Blacks could align themselves with this kind of white fundie bullshit? Are they just trying to cash in, too? Some certainly have achieved prominence and cash as preachers in Black megachurches, the same as their white counterparts.

It should be noted, also, that Russia in 2012 had 12,000 deaths by fire, while the US, with twice the population, had 3,000 in 2011.

re: #161 Sol Berdinowitz

Races really only “exist” in our definition of them…they are highly subjective at that.

The question is about the role they play in society, law and political interaction.

No question of that. But creationists have come up with all sorts of “just so” stories to explain geographically distinct skin colors. I’m just not clear how an African-American church navigates the “whites came first” lessons that is inherent in most creationist tomes.

Al-Qaida leader calls for attacks inside US

hosted.ap.org

“Al-Zawahri, the successor to Osama bin Laden, used the anniversary to argue that the United States can be defeated by targeting its economy. At the same time, he also addressed the ongoing upheaval in the Arab world. Pointing to a power struggle going on within the rebellion against Syria’s regime, he warned jihadi fighters in that country’s civil war not “compromise” with more secular or moderate rebel factions, who he said would eventually turn against the al-Qaida-linked radicals.

(snip)

“On Syria’s civil war, al-Zawahri addressed al-Qaida-linked jihadis - including many foreign fighters - who have taken an increasingly prominent role in the fight against President Bashar Assad’s regime. Their rise has caused tensions with more moderate Syrian rebel factions, even escalating to violence and turf battles. The United States and its allies have said they want to build up moderate rebel factions to reduce jihadi influence.

(snip)

“Regarding Egypt - his homeland - al-Zawahri denounced what he called the “massacre” and `savage crimes” in the crackdown by authorities on Morsi’s Brotherhood and other Islamists. Still, he dismissed Morsi, saying he did not implement Shariah during his year in office and maintained Egypt’s relations with Israel. Al-Zawahri said the crackdown targeted not the Brotherhood, but “the Islamic orientation” in general, because “our American enemies realize the dangers of raising the Islamic banner.”

So, fuck off, GG.

I fixed this half in jest. Given the obstructionism of the current GOP, if AQ really wanted to hurt the USA, all it would need would be to get more Tea Party idjits elected to political office, then watch as the USA imploded as they do away with the income tax, the Federal Reserve bank, Social Security, foreign aid, the Affordable Care Act, the EPA, OSHA, and regulation in general.

You blame the parents and you blame the community at large for thinking it’s “not so bad”. Far too many adults really think bullying is a rite of passage, after all, it happened to them and they were OK. See? There are also WAY too many parents who have NO clue what the hell goes on online and how relentless that shit is. My heart goes out to this family, how horrifying, I would probably get arrested for smacking some parents around if this was my kid.

I’m only now, in the last few months, finding out the extent of bullying my son dealt with in middle and high school. It was awful in middle school, I thought high school was somewhat better. Nope. Just more sneaky and sophisticated. In HS, it was “the good kids” doing it and the little bit I did go to administrators with was dismissed. Those “good kids” were very careful to make sure that no adults were around to hear or see what they were doing. My husband has had to talk me down off the ledge more than once, I was seriously going to the car with a baseball bat to confront 3 sets of parents and hurt someone. The shit I found out is beyond just teasing, it was horrendous, just up to the border of criminal.

There needs to be a safe place for these kids to go where adults believe them and will help them fight to take back their education and social lives from monsters.

While I understand that, I’m not sure I’m ready to believe that there is _that much_ work to do “back home”. But, I am content to be proven wrong.

An interesting article, and one painted a more positive picture of the fraternity experience.

And the established fraternities *are* paying attention to a lot of the issues, including reviewing how their engrained traditions and other items that are essentially “taken for granted” need to be looked at in consideration of the multicultural institutions that most universities are now. In my opinion they are coming to a junction where they have to made a decision regarding whether to hold fast and try to survive in a niche*, or attempt to keep a broad appeal by changing themselves from within.

* - Noted in the article that the fraternity featured is going to remain Muslim-centric. There’s no ban on non-Muslims, but the activities are still probably going to center around those friendly to Muslim religious strictures. I consider that “niche”. And I presume some of the current Christian-centric fraternities will continue centering their activities in a similar fashion and thus freely forego attracting that many non-Christians.

In the center of Prague, like Josefov - the Jewish Quarter - there are quite a lot of English speakers; once you get outside of the center…..eh, not so much.

English is easy to find in the tourist areas in the center, as well as touristy towns like Česky Krumlov or Hradec Králove.

Like where I live? Ostrava? Ahahahahaha!! There’s a tiny handful of English speakers here, mostly in the larger hotels. Outside of that, Polish and Russian are the big foreign languages here.

Hotel I stayed in Prague no joke was an old Soviet officers barracks, I imagine from the Soviet occupation of Prague in ‘45. My roommate and I were the only people in our study group who found that intriguing. And besides, we were barhopping at night and not in our rooms so a little discomfort was fine. Besides, I’ve slept on numerous couches and floors when partying at people’s houses and apartments.

He’ll get no First Juice joy here in Baja Alabama. Our little temple has been here 78 years. They hit their moment of glory during WWII when the hundred or so of them laid out a seder for 1,000 soldiers at the booming local bases. German POWs assisted with the preparations.

About 25 kilometers away from Prague is a city called Kladno. Lots of Black Keys influence on this album. Alex owned up to being a big fan of theirs in the interview.

Yeah you can totally hear Black Keys in the opening riff. I like them too. They seem like down to earth guys. I read on Buzzfeed that BK actually sponsored a Little League team in their hometown in Ohio. The writer of the article suggested the kids request a XL version of the shirt so they have a really cool shirt to brag about when they get to college.

My favorite bit is how Jews were always accused of being greedy moneygrubbers when money lending was one of the few occupations that Medevial kingdoms let them have. We had rain like this a few yrs back in Atlanta, something like 6 inches of rain in three hours after several days of soaking rains. I live on a hill, run off from my neighbors (who cut down every freaking tree in their yard the year before)up the hill flooded our garage and basement. I have never seen rain like that. The water flowing through the house had a freaking current. Water was flowing down the back stairs so hard you couldn’t see the stairs, it looked like a waterfall. I seriously hope we don’t get hammered with that this year, we cannot even close to afford any kind of damage or clean up.

The report says that Georgia violated international law when it used force against Russian peacekeeping troops stationed in Tskhinvali, and that from that moment, Russia’s army had grounds to use force in the peacekeepers’ defense.

The report also says Russia “went far beyond the reasonable limits of defense,” undertaking a drive deep into Georgian territory that violated international law and was “not even remotely commensurate with the threat to Russian peacekeepers.”

Ah, that EU report. Read the report for yourself.

Umm, it splits blame between Russia and Georgia, including Russia’s massive troop deployment in escalating the conflict.

Page 18 points to creeping annexation by the Russians as part of their peacekeeping mission (which the Georgians considered keeping in pieces).

Then, there were Russian violations of Georgian airspace, including several bombing runs in South Ossetia.

So, yeah, the EU report. But not exactly blaming Georgia for the war, or exonerating the Russians for not going to the UN.
Page 284:

To conclude, the Russian use of force cannot be justified as a humanitarian intervention.

From Use of Force section page 289:

In conclusion, the Russian intervention in Georgia cannot be justified as a rescue operation
for Russian nationals in Georgia.

A few pages later:

The use of force by Abkhazia was not justified under international law and was thus illegal. The same applies to the Russian support for Abkhaz use of force.

Yeah, Russia was the innocent in all this? Gimme a break.

One of the reasons that Prague’s Jewish Quarter survived the Protectorate Era here is that Reinhard Heydrich had the idea of preserving it as a ‘Museum to an Extinct People’. The idea was to preserve the Jewish Quarter and gather up various Jewish relics and whatnot and put them on display, so that one day in the future of the Thousand Year Reich, the Nazis could show the world what they’d saved them from.

He’s not a bad guy IMO but he needs a reality check. He’s not a NFL starting QB. It’s probably hard to take since he was a great high school and college QB but sometimes great collegiate athletes just aren’t cut out for the pros and Tebow wouldn’t be the first and he certainly won’t be the last that fits that. He should feel fortunate. He’s not the worst Heisman bust ever and he has had some success. He was at a disadvantage from the start being both highly inaccurate and a lefty QB.

Not as easy as it would appear

A) he’s never played either of those positions, especially tight end where you’re required to block linemen/ linebackers and when going out for a pass run precise routes (his best runs are improvised)
B) although he doesn’t have an accurate arm, it is strong and he did have success in his rookie year in Denver as QB

Good point about him having never played those positions and his runs. The thing about B) though is he hasn’t really done much since. Perhaps the Jets did mismanage him last year, I think Rex Ryan is awful at handling offensive talent but he’s been off a roster more often than not the past year and he hasn’t made it. That should tell him something. The NFL is the ultimate what have you done for me lately league. Tebow should know that one of his predecessors at UF- Rex Grossman was once the QB of a conference winning team in 2006. Now he’s the third string QB for the Skins.

Wingnuts often throw the line “You can’t just throw money at something and expect it to improve.” Sure, that’s true to some extent but they ignore that you can’t just cut everything and act like people won’t be adversely effected. And of course lectures about bootstraps by people who didn’t need the help since they were wealthy already (Hi Mitt) or people who benefited from the same programs they wish to weaken or dismantle (Hey Paulie Ryan).

They want stuff cut and then they bitch because stuff has been cut. I don’t think we have been more stupid as a society ever.

Does everyone get the feeling that when Barack Obama has his last day in office, he is going to let out one hell of a “I am so outta here” cries ever heard? He has been pilloried from every angle for some of the most arcane reasons. I’m no presidential historian, but you just have to wonder if he hasn’t had the most obstruction, resistance and outright hatred of any president. It’s really sad.

Tebow is hardly the first guy who was successful in college but was a bust in the NFL. Heck, look at a list of recent Heisman winners. Gino Torretta? Bust. Matt Leinart? Bust. Eric Crouch? Bust. Chris Weinke? Bust.

Of recent QBs, RGIII is successful to a point (until he got hurt). RGIII has far better skills and is far more accurate than Tebow ever was, so he has that going for him.

Tebow, had he shifted to another position might be able to make it work in pro football in some fashion, but it appears that he wanted to be a QB or nothing else.

He’s a young man. He’ll see most of his tormentors buried, many disgraced, and a few convert.

Hence, the term “re-invent”. Denard Robinson played 4 years at QB UM is now being used a RB/HB and wideout for the Jags. Tebow is not even in the NFL now. Enough said.

His “success” at Denver…… I repeat. He’s not even in the NFL now. Enough said.

Hell Jason White and Eric Crouch never played a down at QB in the NFL to name other names. It’s tough in a way for guys like Tebow who have won awards like the Heisman because they have been stars their whole life but as we’ve seen in the draft, sometimes it’s the guys you’ve never heard of going in that have the biggest impact. Maybe it’s his personality or maybe it was the people advising him but someone should have told him that he should have had a backup plan in mind especially given what the people were saying about him possibly being able to transition to FB or TE.

So much for the experiment to re-invent!

I think the he, being referred to is Tebow. Not Robinson. Robinson is playing for the Jags this season.

The 1516 Reinheitsgebot has made pansies of the whole of Western civilization.

We need to return to a time when men were men, booze was half methanol, and beer was infused with lethal hallucinogens.

Real men would hammer that down, and then go fight Communists. Communists and invisible squids that lived under the couch. And their wives. Their Communist, squid-sympathizing wives.

You’re on a roll today. I want what you had for lunch.

Antwaan Randle-El. Came from Krypton. Played QB for Indiana in the Big 10. Was drafted by Steelers in the late 2nd Round and then played as a wide receiver and kick-off/punt returner. Pretty solid 8-year career with Pittsburgh and Washington.

(Was also drafted by the Chicago Cubs to play baseball, but opted to go to IU instead.)
