Why Is Glenn Greenwald Promoting an Extreme Right Wing 9/11 Truther?

Greenwald hypes an article by Truther Andrew Napolitano
Weird • Views: 34,583

Just a couple of days after he promoted the extreme right wing militia Oathkeepers (referring to them as “a coalition of current and former military, police, and other public officials”), activist Glenn Greenwald is now hyping an article by another far right conspiracy monger: Judge Andrew Napolitano.

Napolitano is probably best known for his loony shows on Fox Business, but he’s also a very frequent guest on the Alex Jones show, a big promoter of the John Birch Society, a close associate of racist paleocons Lew Rockwell and Ron Paul, a neo-Confederate who pushes the idea that Abraham Lincoln was a war criminal, and to top it all off — a 9/11 Truther.

And on 9/11 of this year, he went on Glenn Beck’s show and compared Syria’s use of chemical weapons to the Clinton administration’s siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas.

That’s who Glenn Greenwald thinks you should be reading.

A question for liberal supporters of the Greenwald agenda: is that just fine with you? Are these the people you want to be associated with?

When you’re throwing ooga-booga-police-state bombs at the United States from Brazil, I don’t tend to expect much logical consistency.

In retrospect, this entire episode should have been pretty predictable.

Glenn Greenwald: Neither a Liberal Nor a Progressive

rootedcosmopolitan.wordpress.com

“…he’s either hostile to progressive politics, or he’s a political nitwit.”

I’ll take both for $200, Alex.

37 lawhawk  Fri, Sep 13, 2013 1:34:48pm

And he keeps finding all these extremists to link to in support of his own positions. He could potentially find folks who aren’t extremists, or troofers, or right wing militia types, but he keeps finding ways to link to them.

He’s going to link to anyone who supports his view, regardless of how odious that person’s background may be. And it seems like he’s purposefully going for the proverbial bomb throwers too (which may actually be counterproductive to his agenda, but he’s got his agenda, and he’s going to neutral link as he sees fit - all to extremists).

He’s doing the “Dr. Paul” method of cultivating a following. He reaches out to *every* freakshow out there who’s willing to listen to him. And, like “Dr. Paul,” when he gets called out for associating with dubious or even scummy characters, he gets indignant and denies any accountability for validating or animating these people.

These two characteristics combined — the willingness to associate with people of dubious character while simultaneously rejecting accountability for it — that both Greenwald and Paul demonstrate should be analyzed. I think it’s fascinating, in a repulsive way.

I hardly ever watch Fox News, or listen to or view other right-wing media. Frankly, I don’t need the aggravation. But even I know that Andrew Napolitano is a wacko.

It does seem odd that someone who (one thinks) should “know better” would promote any material from “the fringe”, like the Southern Avenger, or the English Defence League, etc. But they do. I would have thought that GG was intelligent enough to not want to so obviously embarrass himself.

In other news, have we heard from the Colorado contingent of lizardland? Scary looking stuff coming out of Boulder, etc.

The metro areas are a mess, but fairly functional and improving (assuming more rain doesn’t hit while the ground is still soaked and the rivers are full). The places that are in terrible shape are mostly the mountains towns. Towns like Estes Park, Big Elk Meadows, and Lyons are unreachable and have to be evacuated by helicopter. Some of the roads are destroyed, not just blocked with debris or covered in water. I don’t know how some of them will recover.

The other sad story of the floods (so far) is the two kids who were swept away and killed in Boulder. They were eighteen, just out of high school, and the young man was killed trying to save his girlfriend. I believe they were trying to drive away.

I grew up in the mountains, and was told more times than I can count to climb when there is flooding. But I think the kids in the cities don’t really get this, especially so long after the Big Thomson flood in the seventies.

That’s what annoys me too — that their antics are ineffectual. I mean, who the hell LIKES government secrecy? Their posturing and condescension is insufferable because they talk to you as if it never occurred to you to not LIKE it. WTF?? And no matter how many times you tell them “No, I don’t like it but I don’t *expect* to,” it simply does not penetrate their skulls.

Conor Friedersdorf approached me on Twitter to argue about President Obama’s “extra-judicial” killing of U.S. citizens (al-Awlaki). I told him his position was dishonest because he was trying to impose civilian due process into a war context, and because he didn’t offer a plausible alternative. That pretty much ended the discussion.

And so, that’s how to end a discussion with these maddening people — ask them what their plausible alternative course of action is, make them defend it, and don’t let them deflect and derail the discussion.

The thing is they have no ideas that could possibly work, even on a small scale, like in a family, let alone for a country. Plus it’s work, a lot of work to run a nation, and that’s not exactly their strong suit, despite all their ranting about who the makers and takers are. And even if they did manage to create the monster they envision as paradise, even THEY wouldn’t be able to stand it. It would be miserable.

I’m totally freaked right the fuck out about this love for Putin and his actions against his own people.
