Syria has been at war with itself for more than 2 years. 100,000+ killed. Where’s the anti-war folks protesting Assad for that?

They only came out when the US was considering military action to stop Assad from further use of chemical weapons.

Now? Obama and Russia have worked out a deal to get Syria to not only declare its chemical weapons, but to turn them over to the international community for neutralization.

Yet, there’s a bunch of folks who are claiming Obama’s process of getting to this point was flawed, or that Putin won, or that Obama somehow lost ignores that we got to where Obama wanted without a shot fired. Yes, there were threats for the use of force, but those threats got the Russians and Syrians to come to the table, and Putin came around to the US position on pretty much everything.

This doesn’t mean that there wont be issues down the road. Assad could still hide weapons or hide other WMD down the line.

Verify, then trust.

It’s fairly useless, as well as a full-time occupation, to protest Other People’s Wars. That’s especially true of Syria, where we still don’t know who the biggest bastard is. (Note that 100,000 figure is the casualties on both sides, including Assad’s.)

For the apparent resolution, I can live with it. We have no way of knowing what really transpired, though it looks like the President and SoS managed to wing it successfully. That in itself is no negligible talent.

Do those photos have captions or info regarding where they came from? I don’t do the twitter thingy, but it would be cool to know where some of these amazing photos were taken.

Unfortunately not. But if you really want to know, you can use Google Images and upload the picture to search for it. You can usually find where it came from like that.

Click on the camera icon in the search box on the Google Images home page:

I must quibble with this. We do know. It was Assad. HRW did a pretty damning report on the attack.

Bad phrasing on my part. Not talking about Assad and gas, we don’t know what went on in the Obama-Kerry-Putin minuet that produced this agreement.

Everybody’s spinning the Syria deal to make themselves look the best, but I can’t see that Assad and Putin come out ahead in any real way. The bottom line is that it was Putin who backed down after supporting Assad for many years no matter what kind of atrocities he committed. And the deal itself goes far beyond what we ever could have hoped to achieve militarily.

Who knows if it will actually work out, and it may not, but in theory this would get all of Assad’s chemical weapons under international control. There will be inevitable hitches and stalling tactics, but suppose it actually does end up working? Who’ll look like the big winner then? (Hint: not Assad and not Putin.)

A bit of Schadenfreude on Russia helping dispose of weapons it sold/taught the Syrians.

Yup. And we couldn’t have accomplished anything with a teensy-tiny-unbelievable military strike. You can’t render war gases safe by bombing them—most of them already have explosive components to make them blow up (a little).

Calm patient policy and strategy. This is what it looks like.

What it does not do explains much about it’s chilly reception. It does not help the GOP with talking points. It does not help anyone’s ratings. It does not help commodity speculators. It does not play into DC beltway gossip or politics as usual.

It does not spend lives and treasure.

It does take time, AFAIK well worth the effort come what may.

Or…
