Details still unclear
Crime • Views: 25,037

Another horrific mass shooting today at the Washington Navy Yard, where DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier has now confirmed there are at least 12 dead and three wounded.

At least one shooter has been killed — there may be others, but right now there are conflicting reports, so stand by for more details. Police have announced that they’re looking for two other “persons of interest.”

Now they’re saying DC police looking for at least 2 other shooters. WTF? I suppose if the “others” wore some kind of military type looking outfit, they would have blended in a bit better?

This is awful. This had to be some kind of inside job, if someone has already been arrested when his ID was found on the scene close to the dead perp and he was at home.

WTH is this?

US SEC monitoring situation with options trading halt

cnbc.com

WASHINGTON, Sept 16 (Reuters) - U.S. securities regulators said Monday they were monitoring the situation after at least four major options exchanges halted trading due to a glitch with the system that disseminates options price quotes.

Monkey business?

22 darthstar  Mon, Sep 16, 2013 11:31:56am

This is why I prefer that, in situations like this (may they be fewer in the future), the media is just kept in the dark until the investigation has had time to find something. Just tell everyone that there will be a statements as details are cleared for release but that it would be irresponsible for people like Chuck Todd to be given partial information as they’re likely to spew it as fact, then question the integrity of law enforcement when things change…which is common in fluid situations.

re: #21 Justanotherhuman

Trading resumes after earlier shutdown

Options trading was halted on all the major U.S. exchanges at 1:40pm ET because of an apparent quote dissemination problem related to OPRA, a so-called utility for the industry operated by the 11 major exchanges.

Between 12:30 ET and 1:40 ET, inaccurate quotes were being sent to vendors like online brokerages. OPRA stands for the Options Price Reporting Authority and is run jointly by the CBOE, AMEX, ARCA, BATS, BX, BSE, C2, ISE, MIAX, Nasdaq and PHLX.

The NYSE, CBOE, and Nasdaq all said trading had been restored as of 2:35pm ET.

The NYSE explained that there was a processing error at SIAC, which it owns. The cause of the outage was being investigated. SIAC operates OPRA, but the underlying technology is not owned by the NYSE.

The desire for the shooter not to be a member of your own race, religion, or ethnicity makes sense if your race, religion, or ethnicity is frequently pointed to as being violent or dangerous, because then you’ll have to, at the least, endure people looking at you askance. Possibly worse.

Police Clear One Man, Hunt For Another After Navy Yard Shooting Leaves 12 Dead

Lanier said the first person police were interested in was a white man between 40 and 50 years old, wearing what appeared to be a tan naval uniform with a beret-style hat. But a short time after the news conference, the police department tweeted that the man had been identified and cleared.

She said the second person was a black man between 40 and 50 years old, wearing an olive military-style uniform. He man was about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighed 180 pounds and had a medium complexion with graying sideburns.

“We do not know if they are actually military employees,” Lanier told reporters. “But these are people that we really are believe that are involved in some way and we’re trying to locate those individuals.”

Yeah, you & I know the NOI doesn’t do the mass violence thing, but they’re Muslim, Black, taught some pretty racist anti-White stuff back in the day, have strong ties to Chicago, and Farrakhan had ties to Libya (Benghazi!). Kinda hard to resist a big bag of juicy ODS fodder like that. //

Beck: George W. Bush ‘Was A Globalist And A Progressive’

Last week it was Mitt Romney and today it is George W. Bush, as Beck explained on his radio broadcast that every progressive president ends up getting the United States involved in a war.

Woodrow Wilson was a progressive who got us into World War I.

Franklin Roosevelt was a progressive who got us into World War II.

Lyndon Johnson was a progressive who got us into Vietnam.

“I know Republicans don’t like to hear this,” Beck said, “but he was a globalist and a progressive: George W. Bush”:

Only hours after at least 12 people were reportedly left dead from a mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday, fringe conservative radio host Alex Jones had already announced that the tragedy was a globalist conspiracy to “discredit” him.

“You better believe that even if they’re just pure jihadis that did this, even connected to Al-Qaeda groups out of the Middle East being commanded by the leader of Al-Qaeda last Friday to attack the United States… even if that’s the case, you can believe, like the last three or four cases, they’re going to try to connect it to Inforwars.com and yours truly, part of the long-term demonization campaign,” Jones explained.

U, u, u, u
L, l, l, l
H, h, h, h
U, u, u, u

CTHULHU!!!

We can dance like Cthulhu
We can answer to his call
Watch him kick Lady Liberty’s head
down the road like a soccer ball

Say, we can dance like Cthulhu
Live it up while the livin’s good
Cause once he awakens, the world starts shakin’
and there goes the neighborhood

Say, we can dance, we can dance
Great Old Ones are in control
We can dance, we can dance
Hear them callin’ the call
We can dance, we can dance
Terror makes you go in a trance
We can dance, we can dance
Everybody’s shitting their p-a-a-nts

The Cthulhu Dance
The Cthulhu Dance
The Cthulhu Dance
YEAH!

It’s the CTHULHU DANCE!!!

A serious question tangentially related to this thread’s topic: how do you talk to your high-school-aged daughter about how a friend of hers (studious, quiet, white 15-year-old boy) brutally murdered an elderly couple just for the adrenaline rush?

We already went through hell when he was first accused, with her sobbing on the floor “why did he do it? Why did he do it?” Now he’s admitted it and there are really explicit stories in the newspapers, with details that she is inevitably going to be hearing at school today. These were TERRIBLE murders. Stabbing, mutilation, possibly torture. And he was planning to do more when he was arrested. This boy was a sociopath. How do I help my daughter to understand that somebody she saw as “sweet” (her term) was, well, sour? Here, the mental health issues are loud and clear.

You try to protect your kids from the violent society we live in and then it comes right home to you.

- African American
- Has a concealed carry license
- Has one previous firearms conviction in 2010
- Used an AR-15, a shotgun and a handgun at the shooting

12 years after 9/11, and the City’s Medical Examiner is still identifying remains.

Remains for 1,638 people have been positively identified. The most recent identification leaves 1,115 who have still to be identified.

The remains of a 49-year-old man were identified as the result of retesting of remains that were found during the original recovery operation, the medical examiner’s office reported. The victim’s identity was released to family only, who requested no further details be disclosed.

Nearly 22,000 remains have been recovered; identities have been matched for 63 percent (in some cases, multiple remains were traced to a single victim). A total of 1,115 confirmed victims — 41 percent of the total 2,753 — have never been identified, according to information provided by the medical examiner’s office.

Let that sink in. The families of those who were recovered may be receiving little more than fragments of their loved ones 12 years after the attacks. More than a 1,000 victims have yet to be identified - and it may be years (if ever) before they are identified positively by remains. For them, this is an ongoing horror.

And every so often, construction crews in and around Ground Zero and the neighboring buildings have come across fragments traceable to the 9/11 attacks.

How many fucking shootings is it going to take before these idiots wake the fucking fuck up and realize THIS IS YOUR SIGN, that guns are fucking designed to kill and they’re dangerous and that maybe, just goddamned maybe that it’s a bad idea to let just anyone have a gun? Especially a big gun? Or a lot of guns? With lots of giant bullets? That maybe it’s really not going to fucking hurt a bit to have a system of background checks and weapons that should only belong to SWAT and the military? And do not even get me started on how in the hell this happened on a military base.

There are no good answers. You can encourage her to talk to people as she processes it, but remind her that sometimes people are just really good at putting on a mask. At some point she may be working through her interactions with him to figure out if there was something she missed and it’s possible she’ll eventually see things in a different light - but she shouldn’t feel guilty if she doesn’t find anything either.

According to the Freepers, the discharge charge listed on the mugshot website stems from an accidental discharge. Guy claimed he was cleaning his gun when it went off, through the ceiling of his apartment, and into the apartment upstairs. Prosecutor decided not to take the case to trial. This apparently happened around the same time he was being evicted.

Yes it is horrible right now but without firearms the weak would be at the mercy of the strong and ruthless. Firearms in the hands of moral people keep us safe. Weapons are not the problem, it is the hate that is the problem.

I tire of this claim.

I refute the first with Somalia and Afghanistan. All have access to firearms in both nations. The weak are still at the mercy of the strong and ruthless. Why?

Because the strong and ruthless have firearms too.

This point also raises a secondary rebuttal to the second part. How do you ensure only firearms are only in the hands of moral people? I challenge you to explain how this is done without the dreaded ‘gun control’.

That said, I called it a secondary rebuttal. The second implies that arming the moral people is necessary to protect us, or any good nation’s peoples. Australia, Great Britain, and Japan have extraordinary gun control laws. Are the weak in those nations unsafe? Are their citizens more subject to the whims of the “strong and ruthless” than we in the US?

I invite you to propose a measure proving your point that uses those three nations, preferably that does not require swallowing gnats while ignoring camels and ideally one that will withstand Occam’s razor.

tl;dr prove it.

Wow. Had no idea.

Yeah, it’s awful but there is a bit of a bright spot out of all this. The 9/11 attacks pushed the researchers and experts in the field of DNA identifications to come up with new techniques and they’ve managed to identify remains that only a few years ago would have been impossible. That’s helped countless other investigations as well since the remains recovered from the attacks have been found in such awful conditions. It’s pushed the entire field forward. Sadly, it took thousands dead to make that happen.

No, it’s an illusion only makes people believe they have recourse against the strong and ruthless. The little man doesn’t horde guns and keep arsenals and the people who do are neither moral or safe.

This “at the mercy of…” argument is a nonstarter when applied to any other topic.

Certainly, giving a microphone to folks like Alex Jones, Glenn Beck, et al, with their paranoid ravings and delusions, no doubt exacerbates the situation overall; it reminds me of the film “Network”, where Howard Beale, an anchorman who’d clearly suffered some kind of profound psychological breakdown, is hailed as the “Mad Prophet of the Airwaves” and given his own TV show, before he’s ‘canceled’ in the penultimate fashion by the fictional titular network.

This.

It’s a common response, but not a warranted one. There’s a reason why those who know the people who do these kinds of crimes usually fail to foresee it. It’s rare for anyone acquainted with a mass killer to say, “Oh, yeah, I knew that asshole would snap one day and kill a bunch of people.”

How many times have all seen the news, when a serial killer is apprehended and his neighbors say, “He was such a quiet guy; normal, didn’t cause no trouble, even friendly. Looked after my parakeet when I was on vacation” or something to that effect. It’s common.

Monsters don’t look like Jason Vorhees, or Freddy Krueger, or Leatherface; they look like your next-door neighbor, the bus driver, the mechanic down at the local garage. The monsters among us are all quite real, and until they’re apprehended for doing something monstrous, we have no idea of the depravity the people we encounter in everyday life are truly capable of.

Yes, that’s pretty much exactly what she thought at first — “If I’d been nicer to him he wouldn’t have done it. “Them!” and “Tarantula” are probably my two faves of the ‘big bugs’ genre. I first saw “Tarantula” when I was about 5 years old or so; the local indie TV station in LA (this was in the 1970s) always ran a ‘Creature Feature’ on Sunday afternoons.

Good thing I’ve never been arachnophobic, unlike, say…..my ex-wife who once ran screaming - naked - around the apartment when she saw a tiny spider on the faucet as she was about to take a shower. For a brief moment, I thought she was going to run out onto the balcony, LOL.

There were school counselors who he talked to a lot, and doctors at the facility he was in last year, and it was their job to help him, and they tried, and they couldn’t.”

It’s such a horrible story. There were a million red flags up on this kid and still nobody stopped him from committing these gruesome, depraved murders.

Maybe it would be helpful for your daughter to talk to one of the school counselors? Perhaps there are other students feeling that same as she is feeling and a facilitated group session might let them know they aren’t alone thinking that.

My son keeps a shot glass and a playing card on his desk for spiders. Cover them with the shot glass, and slide the card under it, then take them to the back door and release them. Slightly arachnophobic, but heard too many lectures in how spiders kill bad bugs to just kill them.

hahaha! I do the same thing, and not just for spiders. Mostly it’s bumblebees and wasps.

Typically, I leave spiders alone. I have one in the entry hall here, and it doesn’t bother me.

The only time a spider made me jump was in 2001, in Prague. It’s hot in the summer here, so I sleep with the windows open. One morning I awoke to a genuinely gigantic garden spider on my pillow two inches away from my nose. I jumped up, the pillow went flying, the spider went flying, etc. I finally tracked it down, used a thin dowel to pick it up, and put it back outside.

Yes it is horrible right now but without firearms the weak would be at the mercy of the strong and ruthless. Firearms in the hands of moral people keep us safe. Weapons are not the problem, it is the hate that is the problem.

Here’s an idea, lets live in a society where we have police officers and a national guard and an army who can enforce the law without needing civilians to be heavily armed to do it.

That’s one hell of a big spider. We don’t have anything quite that large here. I recall a few years an enormous hornet flying in through my window one afternoon; I’d never seen anything like it before or since. It buzzed around the room a few times and flew off out the window again.

We have Orb Weavers here in NorCal. In the late summer/early fall they weave really, really strong webs that are quite large, often spanning paths and such and extending over 6 feet in doing so.

How strong are they? Well, you know how when you walk into a spider web, you feel this wispy stuff on your face? Not these. You can feel them stre-e-tch across your face, and when you jerk back out of it, they pull back off your face, still intact. I think they could catch birds in the damn things! If you’re walking in the woods this time of the year, a stick to wave in front of you is highlyrecommended!

Pretty much did with the speech. He was making it clear yet again, after Boehner whined that Obama should “come to the table and negotiate” that he will not negotiate on the debt ceiling. Boehner’s got the votes to pass a clean debt ceiling increase, but that would mean losing his job.

First we need to make the police responsible for our protection. As it currently stands, the courts have stated, repeatedly, that the police have no obligation to protect you. You have “no right to not be murdered”.

What you do have a right to is self defense.

They’re huge; I was surprised.

Once in Berlin, I was helping a neighbor clean out his basement storage, and this spider, a good sized one - though nowhere near as big as a huntsman spider - took one look at me and came right for in some kind of weird, arachnoid banzai charge.

I quietly squished it.

Many years ago I was helping my dad with something in the backyard down in Southern California, and we came across a ton of black widows. Dad didn’t say a word. He went back into the house, got a can of mom’s AquaNet, a Zippo, and sent the whole bunch of them to spider Hell.

Every time one of these mass shooting incidents occurs, I hope that some attention will be paid to the poor state of mental health treatment in this country. I would have hoped, for example, that the Affordable Care Act, compelled insurance companies to cover mental health treatment on par with other diseases. I would also hope that society would confront the stigma associated with mental illness and encourage people to seek treatment.

I would also hope that government agencies that employ people in sensitive positions (ie positions that require a security clearance) would reconsider policies that discourage those with mental health issues from seeking treatment, because under current policy seeking mental health treatment can jeopardize a security clearance.

My best spider story is when I was a teen I was chopping wood in the yard alone in Las Vegas and I had a bundle of logs cradled in my arms and out crawled a black widow onto my arm. Had I not had the logs in my hands preventing me from moving them I probably would have freaked out and got bitten. So I did the only thing I could do. I blew it off my arm and it harmlessly fell to the ground.
