Wingnut Christian Voyagers Who Were Lost in the Pacific Plan to Do It Again

Not getting the message

Remember that fundamentalist Christian family from Arizona who got on a boat and sailed off into the Pacific Ocean, fleeing the abortion and the homosexuality and the awful persecution they were suffering as Christians in America? The family who then ended up adrift at sea for weeks before being rescued?

Well, it looks like they didn’t get the message from the Man Upstairs, because instead of thanking God for rescuing them and keeping their butts on dry land, they’re going to do it again. This time, Sean Gastonguay will be putting his family’s life at risk because he’s afraid of immigration reform leading to biometric scanning.

Mr. Gastonguay is the proud recipient of today’s Right Wing Wacko Award.

These nutters weren’t content to have almost gotten themselves and their kids killed at sea last time, so they’re going to try it again.

Can’t the cops and/or CPS get these people on child abuse/neglect charges already?

Sometimes the universe gives you a very important object lesson in not being stupid.

It’s rare to find a person so stupid they ignore that lesson. But obviously they do exist.

Those awards are awarded to everyone serving in the military. Guys graduating bootcamp have the National Defense Medal, simply because they’re enlisted while the armed forces are engaged in military operations somewhere. I imagine the other award is much the same.

That IS good news. A Coloradan friend and I were talking about this, and how for a lot of little towns, there’s ONE way into town and it’s across the bridge that’s over the river, and the electricity, gas, water, phone, and internet all cross the bridge. Take the bridge out, and you have instant complete isolation.

You could drink the river water, if you could get any without being swept away, and you could figure out how to boil it, without gas, and with all your firewood soaking wet.

My grandson had an ear infection last year caused by a spider crawling into his ear while he was sleeping. Ack. Freaked everyone out except the doctor and my grandson who thought it was awesome when they showed him all the spider bits they washed out of his ear. Boys, geesh.

I like spiders, they really don’t bug me as long as they aren’t big and crawly on me. Or poisonous, we’ve had Black Widows around here in the past, yipes.

Now cockroaches are another story. I hate them, they are nasty and gross. Down here in the south we have big ones that can fly. They call them Palmetto Bugs. HA. Flying Cockroaches, some of whom need to call into air traffic control before landing and taking off. Yuck, ew, ack. It doesn’t matter how much I clean I still find them in the cupboards and stuff. Even with an exterminator coming in once a quarter. I hate them. Appearently they live outside under our deck and short of toxifying the whole area there’s not much we can do. With a dog, a kid and sometimes little ones around I can’t go full metal death mode on them.

All very subjective of course. To each his own and all that. The lightning shot would be a crime to change, and that’s pretty bright.

Meanwhile in Iran…

Intelligence Sources: Rohani Prepared to Shut Down Nuclear Site

SPIEGEL has learned from intelligence sources that Iran’s new president, Hassan Rohani, is reportedly prepared to decommission the Fordo enrichment plant and allow international inspectors to monitor the removal of the centrifuges. In return, he could demand that the United States and Europe rescind their sanctions against the Islamic Republic, lift the ban on Iranian oil exports and allow the country’s central bank to do international business again.

Rohani reportedly intends to announce the details of the offer, perhaps already during his speech before the United Nations General Assembly at the end of the month. His foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, will meet Catherine Ashton, the European Union’s top diplomat, in New York next Sunday and give her a rough outline of the deal. If he were to make such wide-ranging concessions, President Rohani would initiate a negotiating process that could conceivably even lead to a resumption of bilateral diplomatic relations with Washington.

Disastrous Economic Situation

Other developments seem promising as well. On Monday, Iran’s new nuclear energy chief Ali Akbar Salehi reportedly told the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) member states that the country was ready to “enhance and expand” cooperation. Additionally, US President Barack Obama revealed on Sunday in an interview with broadcaster ABC that he and Rohani had exchanged letters, though he did not discuss the content of their correspondence. Some media sources have suggested that this could pave the way for leaders of the two countries to meet for the first time since Iran’s 1979 revolution.

Can’t the cops and/or CPS get these people on child abuse/neglect charges already?

In my opinion, if the State of Arizona doesn’t take action to protect the children, that will be the big story here. A much bigger story than the mental illness of the parents. Those kids are (I assume) American citizens, and Arizona residents, and they deserve better than to be dragged along for the second time on a dangerous ocean voyage.

Problem is, the West was settled by people much like this, who dragged their children across Sioux and Comanche country in wagons.

It’s noted on page 5 that Alexis’s father reported that his son had participated in rescue efforts on 9/11 (they live in NYC). Alexis would have been about 22 at that time. His father said family believed he had anger mgmt problems associated with PTSD.

Sometimes the universe gives you a very important object lesson in not being stupid.

It’s rare to find a person so stupid they ignore that lesson. But obviously they do exist.

Not only putting themselves in danger again, but the rest of their family and their kids too. That takes a real special kind of crazy.

But here’s a thought. If they were really so in need of getting out of the US to a safe haven, why not just fly? Why the boat? What are they really trying to prove by taking to the high seas, again? Hoping that a rogue wave wont treat them like a toy boat and fling ‘em into the hereafter? Or, take a 1-way trip on a cruise ship or even a freighter? Much safer, and quicker too.

It looks like they’re actually courting disaster for the sake of media attention. That’s a whole different level of crazy.

Well they have new leadership and the economic sanctions are killing them. The people want to see a more reasonable approach.

They don’t really have new leadership. The same mullahs and Supreme Leader have been in place for decades. Like Ahmedinijad, the new “leader” isn’t much more than a figure head. Not much political power. The sanctions might be wearing them down. But they are in talks with the Russians about building a new reactor allvoices.com

Maybe they just sense that Obama’s in a negotiating mood and they want to see what kind of deal they can get. Might just be another song and dance and negotiations will break down once they demand Israel give up its nukes.
Either way I think the Iranians feel safe. Not much chance of international action and the domestic unrest from a few years ago has gone. I doubt they’re serious about giving up their nuke program. The North Koreans play the same game.

Kansas GOP gives failing grade to Common Core

Top leaders of the Kansas Republican Party weighed in with strong language condemning mathematics and reading standards for public schools adopted by the state Board of Education, the party’s chairman said Monday.

The central committee of the Kansas GOP convened in Kansas City, Kan., to consider the resolution denouncing Common Core programs scheduled to become part of the classroom experience for K-12 students in Kansas and all but five U.S. states. The Kansas State Board of Education adopted standards associated with Common Core in 2010.

[…]

Attempts by Republican members of the Kansas Legislature to strip away state funding for Common Core failed to gain traction the past two years. A series of complaints emerged among foes of the Common Core, including concern the standards viewed evolution as fact and didn’t integrate creationism into instruction models.

My best spider story is when I was a teen I was chopping wood in the yard alone in Las Vegas and I had a bundle of logs cradled in my arms and out crawled a black widow onto my arm. Had I not had the logs in my hands preventing me from moving them I probably would have freaked out and got bitten. So I did the only thing I could do. I blew it off my arm and it harmlessly fell to the ground.

re: #134 blueraven

There are good reasons to take the Iranian statements as trial balloons, but not necessarily serious offers. The presidents in Iran have a limited amount of leeway when the power ultimately resides in the Guardian Council and the Supreme Mullah.

At least a few on the Guardian Council may be thinking that Ahmadinejad’s hardline approach did Iran no favors, so they’re trying a different tact to get the sanctions lifted. The Supreme Mullah may be thinking about changing tactics and rapproachment with the US on a genuine basis, or they’re looking to engage in the US because they think that the US appears weak or open to negotiate.

It’s possible that it might open a few doors, but there’s other layers involved here.

Better relations with Iran means that the Saudis, Egyptians, and other Sunni majority countries will find themselves looking to undermine this, and offsetting a potential countervailing force - limiting Shi’a influence.

And then there are questions about Syria’s involvement in Syria and their ongoing support for Hizbullah in Syria and Lebanon.

The mullahs may be thinking that Obama’s willing to cut deals since they backed off military action with Syria, or that the threat of military action may have led to the rapproachment. Or that the military action would have uncovered more and deeper links implicating the Iranians.

It’s hard to tell, but the diplomats will have to weigh all the options and consequences.
