Al Shabaab Claims Responsibility for Kenya Terror Attack on Twitter

Islamic extremists use Twitter to announce mass murder
Terrorism • Views: 38,511

The Somalia-based Al Qaeda spinoff group Al Shabaab launched a terrorist attack today in Kenya, in an upscale shopping mall that was holding a children’s day event, killing at least 30 people including several children: 30 Killed in Nairobi Mall Attack; Al-Shabaab Claims Responsibility.

(CNN) — The death toll grew to 30 people in Saturday’s attack by gunmen on an upscale shopping mall in the Kenyan capital, leading to a fierce gunbattle with police and a hostage standoff, authorities said.

Several hours after the attack, Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked militant group based in Somalia, claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

“The Mujahideen entered #WestgateMall today at around noon and are still inside the mall,” the Islamic extremist group said on its Twitter account.

Yes, you read that last sentence correctly — Al Shabaab has a Twitter account that they use to boast about committing mass murder of innocent people, and it’s been active for almost two years, since December 2011.

Seems like a pretty clear violation of The Twitter Rules, not to mention simple human decency. Hello, Twitter? WTF?

UPDATE at 9/21/13 3:02:06 pm

The Al Shabaab Twitter account has now been suspended.

Most of Al-Shabaab’s messages on Twitter are in English, with authorities suggesting that they are intended for an outside audience and potential recruits in the West. Officials in the United States, where Twitter is based, are exploring legal ways to terminate the account, although they acknowledge that doing so might raise free speech concerns.[190] Chirchir commented in a tweet of his own that such a move would be counterproductive, as “Al Shabaab needs to be engaged positively and twitter is the only avenue”.[191]

In January 2013, Twitter suspended Al-Shabaab’s English account.[192][193] This was apparently in response to the account having issued death threats against Frenchman “Denis Allex” and subsequently posted photos of his corpse after the botched Bulo Marer hostage rescue attempt, as well as tweeting threats to kill Kenyan hostages.[193][194] Al-Shabaab later opened a new Twitter account on February 4, 2013.[194] Twitter closed the account again on September 6, 2013 for unspecified reasons. A few days earlier, on September 3, the insurgent group had used the service to claim responsibility for an unsuccessful ambush attempt against a convoy carrying Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The militants also tweeted after the attack that the outfit had no other active Twitter feeds in English, and cautioned users against “parody accounts”. The insurgent group also messaged that “next time, you won’t be as lucky,” in apparent violation of Twitter’s user policies against issuing threats of violence and using the service for illicit purposes or activities. However, Al-Shabaab’s Arabic account remained open.[193] The group later relaunched its English Twitter account on September 11.[195

When I commented on that attack this morning, this is what I was afraid of more than anything.

It didn’t just seem right that 5 people would “rob” a shopping mall by going in guns blazing, as a mall is composed of multiple stores and crowds of people. This just didn’t seem like an ordinary robbery at the time.

AQ is spreading out in Africa. This is from July 2012.

Al-Qaeda Grows in Africa: New Union With Al-Shabaab

fairobserver.com

“Al-Qaeda’s union with al-Shabaab threatens both the Horn of Africa — Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Eritrea and Djibouti — and East Africa, which includes Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. As Somalia’s Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahedeen joined al-Qaeda in February 2012, news of the new union prompted celebrations in southern and central Somalia, areas long controlled by al-Shabaab. Unless al-Shabaab is dismantled, the group will pose a threat not only to Somalia but the entire region and beyond.

“As the vanguard of the Muslim militant groups, al-Qaeda leaders have called upon their supporters and sympathizers to support al-Shabaab against the Somali military and the African Union peacekeepers. Al-Qaeda, weakened on many fronts, will benefit from making Somalia a key hub for operations in Africa. re: #54 Killgore Trout

I can’t seem to think of another Islamic terrorist cell with a female leader. It’s an unusual choice, especially considering the physical nature of the attack.

Then you’re not paying attention. From April 2012:

Terror’s ‘invisible women’

Women are becoming more lethal. In jihadist organizations — including even Al Qaeda, which had long banned females from violent roles — women are increasingly taking part in terrorist actions.

Since 1985, terrorism’s so-called invisible women have accounted for a quarter of fatal attacks in Iraq, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Chechnya, Sri Lanka, Morocco and Palestine. My research found that by mid-2008, women had acted as suicide bombers 21 times in Iraq’s markets and other civilian venues patronized by Shiites.

Other research has demonstrated that since 2002 women have carried out fully 50% of suicide attacks in Sri Lanka, Turkey and Chechnya.

So why do we think of violent jihadists as largely male? One reason is that terrorism observers, mostly men who have historically focused on men at war, tend to view women who participate in acts of terrorism as exceptions. Given women’s increasingly violent roles in jihadist organizations, however, researchers overlook females as effective killers at our peril.

lol…

In 2008, Ayman Zawahiri, then second in command of Al Qaeda and perhaps now its leader, allowed no female bombers in Al Qaeda. He told female supporters their role was to stay home and raise children. But then the next year his wife, Omaima Hassan, defied him and went online to encourage women to become more active in jihad.

60 Killgore Trout  Sat, Sep 21, 2013 3:48:42pm

Suffragettes!

For their part, a younger generation of female jihadists has come to believe that acts of violence can be just as liberating politically and spiritually for women as for men. A religious woman can deflect her parents’ or husband’s objections by invoking the name of religion, which trumps all.

It’s late here in Europe, but I’d be interested to know what you thought of it. I enjoyed it very much, personally.

Excellent work. I have only a passing knowledge of the Hittites so this in its detail was very welcomed. I especially appreciated the detail of the relationship between them and Egypt. Good stuff! Thank you.

Any word on the opinion of Somalis in Minneapolis have to say about this? They are usually silent when al-Shabaab commit disgusting acts like this, doesn’t surprise me since a lot of their recruits come from Minneapolis.

Oh, you mean like this, from 2009?

Local Somalis condemn suicide bombing in homeland

Minneapolis — Even Somali-Americans hardened by the bloodshed of their homeland were sickened by the latest attack, a suicide bombing in Mogadishu on Dec. 3.

Many say the bombing was one of the saddest moments in recent Somali history. The bomber killed at least 22 people at a graduation ceremony for medical students. Some people have even called the attack “Somalia’s 9/11.”

On Sunday, about 100 Somali-Americans scrounged up their last shreds of hope for their homeland as part of a community rally in Minneapolis to condemn the violence and pray for the victims’ families.

Some of the peaceful protesters were young people like Mukhtar Osman, who consider the bombing victims their own peers.

Osman, a 26-year-old civil engineer from Minneapolis, knew at least five people who were injured or killed in the graduation ceremony, on a day that should have been one of the happiest of their lives. […]

Since electrotek, as usual, only popped in to drop a stinking turd and then disappear back under his bridge, I figure some of you might be interested in actual useful info about the Somali community in Minnesota: Minnesota Public Radio has dozens of additional articles (from 2009) on the subject.

The ADL also has en extensive report that was just updated a few months ago, in June 2013: Al Shabaab’s American Recruits (PDF)

I can’t seem to think of another Islamic terrorist cell with a female leader. It’s an unusual choice, especially considering the physical nature of the attack.

Agreed.

re: #101 CuriousLurker

Since the terrorist act was spearheaded by a woman, likely a niqaabi, are you still going to defend niqaabis when majority of them have fantasies of fighting the evil “kuffaar”?

Somalis in Minneapolis have done a piss poor job of controlling their youth, and this is not my opinion, but the sentiment of non-Somali Muslims who reside in the city and can lay witness to how they allow such stupidity to run rampant.
