Kenyan Mall Hostage Situation Continues, Death Toll Reaches 68

The standoff in Nairobi continues, as at least 10 Al Shabaab terrorists remain holed up in the Westgate shopping mall and the death toll has climbed to 59.

NAIROBI, Kenya — The deadly siege at a mall in Nairobi continued Sunday, as the Kenyan government struggled with the question of whether to storm the Shabab militant attackers still holed up inside or keep trying to free people trapped inside after more than 24 hours.

There were signs that Kenyan forces had begun to take steps against the hunkered-down assailants. Helicopters continued to circle the mall, and the National Disaster Operation Center said on Twitter Sunday evening after sunset: “Godspeed to our guys in the Westgate building. Major engagement ongoing. Sporadic gunfire.”

“Kenyan forces who’ve just attempted a roof landing must know that they are jeopardising the lives of all the hostages at #Westgate,” read a Twitter post attributed to the Shabab on Sunday night. “The Kenyan government shall be held responsible for any loss of life as a result of such an imprudent move.”

Yes, that’s right — Al Shabaab is back on Twitter.

And according to AFP, the death toll is continuing to climb:

Oh, blow me, you vicious asshole. If they didn’t storm it’s not as if those hostages were going to live.

DARVO to the max.

Friend just posted on Facebook that an American has been killed in the Kenya Mall attack, one American woman, the wife of a US diplomat working for USAID

3 sattv4u2  Sun, Sep 22, 2013 11:26:07am

Also, it appears as if the authorities aren’t even sure how many terrorists are holed up there, not to mention how many hostages

4 Killgore Trout  Sun, Sep 22, 2013 11:26:49am

They certainly got a bunch of high value targets. The mall is known as a hangout for Westerners and diplomats but the President’s fiancés? Did they get lucky or did they have some knowledge of who would be there?

Actually, the problem is EXTREMISTS. Period. Full stop. Doesn’t matter what religion (or not) they attach themselves to. So instead of broad brushing groups of people as the problem, it could be wise to understand the extremism. That’s the heart of the darkness. If religion is involved, it’s a fucking excuse to hide behind, nothing more. You strip the religion out of it, telling one extremist from another is quite difficult. Hate is the issue above all else.

Explosion hits Sunni mosque in Iraq, killing 18

BAGHDAD—Two bombs hidden inside air conditioners exploded Friday in a Sunni mosque packed with worshippers north of Baghdad, killing at least 18 people in the latest in a string of attacks on the sect’s holy sites in Iraq.

Iraq is weathering its worst bout of violence in half a decade. Attacks have risen significantly since April, intensifying fears the country is slipping back toward the widespread bloodshed and sectarian fighting that marked the years following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. […]

WTF, were you sleeping through the whole Iraq war? Oh wait, it wasn’t a suicide attack, so I guess it doesn’t count.

The delineation to me is extremist or not. The preceding label rarely matters, as the rest of us can get along without deliberate mayhem and death. I truly fear a global confrontation along that very schism in Islam. We westerners had our 100 years war. I’d like to see that lesson learned. Death and destruction are not required r desired. Seriously Ted, go with that strategy. Makes passage of every portion of the budget dependent on shutting down the ACA. Stretch out this three-ring circus all the way til next November. Your party’s implosion will make the Whigs look good by comparison.

Really tasty and took all of about 10 minutes to make. Definitely a keeper.

LOL, nope, what I did was recognize where you were coming from with your intense hatred for everything Sunni. You could probably get away with that shit around non-Muslims, but not with Muslims. Funny how you ignored the fact that I was previously married to a Pakistani Shia—people don’t typically marry those they have a sectarian bias again, but by all means please continue to nurse your grudge and be in complete denial about anything that doesn’t fit into your shitty, bigoted frameset.

By your definitions and sweeping statements they would be. But extremists are found in narrow fundamentalist branches and sects, and yet you tend to make sweeping statements encompassing all muslims, sunnis, shia, catholics, etc. etc. It is the essential method of bigots to make the narrow exception the rule when they hate another group & I was merely giving you tit for tat & using your own “co religionist therefor fair to smear” logic.

It was really easy. REALLY easy.

~8 oz ground meat (I used extra lean beef, the recipe called for ground sirloin)
1.5 Tbsp taco seasoning (but hey, I used 3)
1/4 cup water (to convince the taco seasoning to mix, I used a little more)
one can black beans (rinse them to get rid of all the salt)
half cup frozen corn
one 8.8 oz package microwaveable brown rice

Microwave the rice. In a pan, brown the ground beef until it crumbles. Add water and taco seasoning, stir. Add beans and corn. Stir some more while it heats (use your judgement). Add rice and stir. Serve with pico de gallo and cheese as desired.

On a more general note:

When it comes to mass-casualty terrorist attacks, yes, of course Al-Qaeda groups and associated spin-offs are the worst. And I would classify Al Shabaab as the worst of these groups, especially for deliberately denying aid for starving Somalis.

But when it comes to threatening the future of humanity itself, US Dominionists win out, namely due to their anti-science attitudes (creationism, AGW denialism) and Ayn-Rand devotion to fossil fuel megacorps (and to come full circle, by working to keep the world enslaved to oil, they empower the very Saudi extremists they supposedly condemn - and it was Saudi extremists who committed the 9/11 terrorist attacks)

Speaking of Hazrat Ali…

Imam Ali (a.s.) once said to his son Imam Hasan (a.s.):

My son, learn four things from me and through them you will learn four more. If you keep them in mind your actions will not bring any harm to you:

1.) The greatest wealth is Wisdom;
2.) The greatest poverty is stupidity;
3.) The worst unsociableness is that of vanity and self-glorification; and
4.) The best nobility of descent exhibits itself in politeness and in refinement of manner

The next four things, my son, are:

Do not make friendship with a fool because when he will try to do you good he will do you harm; do not make a miser your friend because he will run away from you at the time of your dire need; do not be friendly with a vicious and wicked person because he will sell you and your friendship at the cheapest price and do not make friend of a liar because like a mirage he will make you visualize very near the things which lie at a great distance and will make you see at the great distance the things which are near to you.

Y’all can compare that to what you see & hear in the future. //

The vast majority of healthcare reform is funded through what is known as mandatory spending that is not necessarily affected by the continuing budget resolution now at issue in Congress. If the government shuts down, the only aspect of Obamacare that will be defunded is the portion that is covered through discretionary spending. Affordable Care Act discretionary spending includes funding for community health centers, preventative health programs, school-based health clinics for children, rural and Indian health centers, doctor and nurse training grants, among other programs—spending that overwhelmingly benefit rural Republican districts in many states.

Crazy atheists, we are.

THE USUAL SUSPECTS
Oregon War Memorial Explosion Has To Be Atheist Terrorism, Because Duh, Atheists

wonkette.com

“A Vietnam war memorial in a park in Coos Bay, Oregon, was the target of a small explosion last Thursday; while police have not made any arrests or identified any suspects, the forensic scientists at Gateway Pundit have decided that the bombing was the work of an “Atheist Group.” Guest blogger* Mara Zebest presents her evidence-free analysis:

“An atheist group is believed to be behind an IED explosion at a war memorial cross in Coos Bay, Oregon. Coincidentally, the cross has been the recent target of lawsuits from the atheist group, “Freedom From Religion Foundation” (FFRF). If it is proven this group planted an IED, can we officially declare the FFRF group a terrorist organization? Luckily the explosion didn’t kill anyone and damage was minimal charring to the memorial.”

(snip)

“Pretty neat step — FRFF sends a letter, so obviously they are cross-bombing terrorists. Sasser also worried that the explosion could have killed or injured children playing nearby; Starnes’ column doesn’t mention that the explosion occurred somewhere between 11 p.m. Thursday and 1 a.m. Friday. (Not that anyone should ever set off a bomb in a park, of course. But Starnes is happy to leave the impression that someone set off a bomb in the daytime in a park full of kids.) “

A new poll done for Republican members of Congress has found huge public opposition, and solid opposition among Republicans, to the idea of shutting down the government over the issue of funding Obamacare.

In a national survey of 1,000 registered voters done July 31 and August 1, the question, from pollster David Winston, said, “Some members of Congress have proposed shutting down the government as a way to defund the president’s health care law” and asked respondents whether they favored or opposed that plan.

Overall, 71 percent of those surveyed opposed a shutdown, while 23 percent favored a shutdown. Among Republicans, 53 percent opposed, versus 37 percent who favored.

Winston found a huge gender gap among Republicans. Republican men favored a shutdown by a narrow 48 percent to 44 percent margin. But Republican women opposed it by an enormous 61 percent to 29 percent margin.

Nothing surprising here, it’s been obvious for a long time that a plurality of Republican men are simply clinically insane, dogshit human beings.

a question that I have… and again, forgive me because I’m speaking from a position of acute ignorance here…

Why hasn’t there been more of an effort amongst Muslims to attempt to heal the rift between the radical Sunni and radical Shia factions? Is there any council of Muslim clerics working on this? I would assume that this wouldn’t be reported on within the US because we know just how useless our media is…. yet, is Islam doing anything to try and heal itself and if not, why not? What benefit is there in remaining this disjointed with allowing this much killing?

I say this knowing full well of our own issues, just wondering if there was anyone attempting to try and build bridges instead of bombs and wouldn’t it be in the best interests of everyone to have this conversation…. will let you guys flame me me or educate me, whichever is required.

There is no end of groups of people all around the world, killing other groups of people.

I repeat what I have written before: we are a violent and aggressive species.

If you look at these group violent acts, I suggest almost always you’ll find leaders, people who are good at manipulating others, who have succeeded in convincing others to do violent acts. The reasons are probably many, but one of them always seems to be that the acts make the leaders even more in a position of dominance (control.)

This is analogous to how entire nations can be led to war by a few individuals in the right places in the power structure. The nation has to be open to the idea, but given enough time and money good propagandists can accomplish much.

Having said all of that, it doesn’t get us any closer to resolving how to keep small groups from going violent and massacring others.

First day of Fall (blech), it’s Sunday, tomorrow is Monday, and the Emmy awards are on. Can’t get more depressing than that.

re: #232 freetoken

First thing that comes to mind is whether ideology is a cause of violence, or rather, are religious labels merely the fig leaves behind which humans hide.

The Troubles in Ireland had nothing to do with religion.

There’s historic reasons why most of the people on one side are Catholic, and most of the people on the other side are Protestant, and certainly when they yelled at each or yelled about each other religious epithets were used… but the dispute had nothing to do with theology. It was about which nation’s government should hold sway over a particular piece of territory.

Just think - no more Mondays.

Another one to file under not-really-a-revelation:

Montgomery students say they barely study for math finals

More than most subjects, “cramming” doesn’t really work for mathematics. As one of the youngsters quoted in the article says:

Ronald Lagos, 15, recalled that for his geometry final, he studied perhaps 15 minutes but said he felt he had kept up with the subject throughout the course. “I don’t study at the last minute; I study the whole year,” he said.

Ronald passed the exam, he said. One of Ronald’s friends, 14, was not as fortunate, saying that he did not pay full attention in class.

Meanwhile, over at WND their big, screaming-in-red-letters headline: BLACK-MOB VIOLENCE DESTROYS U.S. LANDMARK, by their racist-in-chief Colin Flaherty. It’s just another example at cherry picking, in this case of a particularly crime-ridden spot on a hiking trail, which WND wants to flame into some giant race war. Yes, it may be a “US landmark”, but it’s just a hiking trail, and just one spot, that undoubtedly attracts criminals because of the isolation of the victims.

So what, even it’s true.

We’ve had plenty of domestic terrorists in the US, born here, who might call themselves christians, who never left the country.

But people like BF will give them a pass, even when they kill and injure hundreds of people, as Tim McVeigh and his cohorts did. And probably more who might be inclined to commit the same kinds of act, even in the name of religion and RW politics, as Eric Rudolph did.

A lot of people forget that the U.S. suffered a long, and successful, as in the terrorists won, in the past.
