Breitbart Resurrects Another Old Right Wing Canard

Yes, it’s Gennifer Flowers, back again via Breitbart.com
Wingnuts • Views: 26,022

Keepin’ it classy, the site that Andrew Breitbart built reports the news the right wing wants to hear: CLINTON MISTRESS: BILL TOLD ME HILLARY IS BISEXUAL.

Bill Clinton’s former mistress alleged that Hillary Clinton is a bisexual in a recent interview.

Gennifer Flowers, who reportedly had an affair with Bill Clinton for 12 years, told the Daily Mail that the former President did not care that his wife had sexual relations with men and women.

“I just know what Bill told me and that was that he was aware that Hillary was bisexual and he didn’t care,” Flowers told the publication. “He should know. He said Hillary had eaten more pussy than he had.”

Part of how we judge a candidate is by how they run their campaign, what sort of organization they’ve been able to create, who of the supposedly well-informed insiders supports them.

But a next-of-kin gets all those things on the strength of someone else’s skills. It makes it hard to know what the legacy candidate could do on their own merit.

As a fan of the show since it first aired in 2008, I’m fairly certain that Vince Gilligan and company came up with a satisfying ending to the saga of Walter White. The ultimate downfall was set up perfectly IMO with last week’s episode “Ozymandias.”

As a fan of the show since it first aired in the winter of 2008 I really envy you people who can binge-watch the show with internet. Some of the most ridiculous cliffhangers occurred at the end of the season, and us fans just have to wallow for almost a year trying to figure out what the fuck just happened.

I, personally, am glad that the show is ending. Walt can’t keep being Heisenberg without everything around him being destroyed. The meth business is, on the whole, amoral. This show does a tremendous solid for discourse in this country on a wide number of issues (illegal drugs, healthcare, immigration, law enforcement, just to scratch the surface). It’s a great irony that the show reached it’s popularity zenith while it was being aired on the last season of the show.

Oh, and I think “Breaking Bad” is the best scripted television show ever made.

Global warming ‘hiatus’ puts climate change scientists on the spot

It’s a climate puzzle that has vexed scientists for more than a decade and added fuel to the arguments of those who insist man-made global warming is a myth.

Since just before the start of the 21st century, the Earth’s average global surface temperature has failed to rise despite soaring levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases and years of dire warnings from environmental advocates.

Palin demands Fox News host turn over the GOP ‘cannibals’ who are trying to ‘trash’ Cruz

Fox News contributor Sarah Palin on Sunday lashed out at fellow Fox News employee Chris Wallace after he announced on his show that Republicans had contacted him anonymously with research to oppose Sen. Ted Cruz’ (R-TX) plan to defund Obamacare.

“As soon as we listed Ted Cruz as our featured guest this week, I got unsolicited research and questions, not from Democrats, but from top Republicans to hammer Cruz,” Wallace explained.

In a tweet addressed to Wallace’s Fox News Sunday show, Palin demanded to know who was trying to “trash” Cruz.

“Keep it TRULY fair & balanced. Release the GOP names encouraging you to trash @SenTedCruz,” she wrote. “No more anonymous sources.”

New Australian PM swears an oath of allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II.

Tony Abbott was officially sworn in as the 28th Prime Minister of Australia on Wednesday. While he grabbed headlines for appointing just one woman to his cabinet, there was another subtle change that caught my eye as he was sworn in.

Under Prime Minister’s Paul Keating, Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, the oath of allegience for ministers was changed from swearing an oath to Queen Elizabeth to;

I, (Insert name), do swear that I will well and truly serve the Commonwealth of Australia, her land and her people, in the office of the prime minister, so help me God.

However, all that changed on Wednesday as Tony Abbott changed the oath to include;

I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Queen Elizabeth the second, the Queen of Australia.

Bubbling up from the underground internet is an interesting story into which I’m not sure how much to put stock:

Anti-Gay Alabama Judge Bill Pryor Allegedly Posed For Nudie Mag In 1980s

The internet is a lot like Pet Sematary: Things long-buried have a way of coming to life.

Take the nude photos allegedly of conservative federal judge Bill Pryor that appeared on badpuppy.com (NSFW) way back in 1997, when the Web was held together with string and tape. The site Legal Schnauzer claims the images, of a completely nude and erect model, are actually of Pryor, a Republican appointee who sit on the U.S. Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals for Georgia, Florida and Alabama.

Now we’re the last ones to shade someone for sharing what God gave them, but Pryor has a solid record of screwing the gay community (and not in the fun way). In addition to opposing reproductive rights and supporting prayer in school, Pryor, now 51, filed a brief in Lawrence v. Texas arguing that sodomy “is a chosen behavior unworthy of constitutional protection” and comparing homosexuality to pedophilia, incest and corpse-raping.

[…]

According to the report,a series of more than a dozen photos were taken in the early 1980s, when Pryor was a college student at the University of Louisiana. They appeared in at least one print mag before landing online.

What makes Legal Schnauzer’s claims really of interest is the suggestion that the GOP overlords who backed Pryor’s judicial rise have been blackmailing him with these photos for years.

Here is a somewhat more reliable source: scientificamerican.com

SciAm’s angle on the story is that the “hiatus” will not last, which is the conclusion of a draft scientific report to the UN. That’s the most important point coming from the report.

Monte Morin’s angle is that there is a “glaring discrepancy” between the data and the predicted values, and now scientists are scrambling to explain how their predictions could be so wrong.

Morin is either trying to find drama where there is none, or he’s got an axe to grind about global warming. Either way, he’s now provided the AGW denialists fodder for their arguments.

Sensationalism and science reporting should not be uttered in the same sentence. Thanks, LA TImes.

He’s out to sell papers, or in this case web hits. Controversy sells, and so does conflict, which is why American versions of television shows like Masterchef emphasize (and sometimes fabricate) conflict over topical substance, compared to their public television (usually BBC) origin.

The Earth surface’s climate changes in terms of decades to millennia, much too distant for human decision making.

I appreciate a sense of skepticism towards authority and an individualist approach.

But that does not make me anti-science, because I was taught at an early age (in school, even) how science works and learned to appreciate what peer review really entails: it does not entail finding someone with a degree in some unrelated natural science to point out superficial inconsistencies in the body of literature on a given topic.

What it means is that at the central core of the Tea Party movement there’s always and only been one thing, thinly veiled racism. Bobcat Goldthwait had a good line on this in his stand up special You Don’t Look the Same Either, talking about how a bunch of people had the following conversation when they woke up and realized the President didn’t look like all the other Presidents before him:

-Look at the President, he’s ah, uhh … a socialist!
-What’s a socialist?

re: #91 Sol Berdinowitz

We are also seeing the fruIts of all the cuts in education starting under Reagan: children are not learning how science works, their notion of “critical thinking” means “rejecting anything that contradicts what their preacher tells them on Sunday”.

The anti-science/Bible thumper matrix have co-opted the educationese term “critical thinking” to mean “teach alternative explanations for phenomena with widely accepted secular explanations and let the kids decide which is correct.”

The original meaning of “critical thinking” was to encourage students to analyze issues or articles for bias, omissions of fact, and/or logical fallacies, and to discuss it in class or in essays. It’s a higher level form of thinking that, frankly speaking, a lot of adults cannot even do very well, much less 13-year-olds. But for a time, pre-NCLB and pre-Common Core, it was Education’s trope du jour.

The ID people co-opted the term first, I think, since they like to disguise creationism and religious beliefs with educationese and pseudo-scentific terms to sneak them past unsophisticated school boards. The Dover, Pa., court case peeled back the disguise, but the creationists and IDiots have forged on ahead, using “critical thinking” as a wedge to foist religious ideas onto science teaching. They have deliberately promoted false “scientific controversies” where none exist — except within their own benighted communities — to dupe unsophisticated (or enable like-minded) school boards to allow/force teachers into teaching creationism/ID as the “other side” of the evolution “debate.”

Even in communities where there is no active anti-evolution lobby, many science teachers avoid teaching evolution like it was radioactive. That’s according to surveys by the National Science Teachers Association.

This strategy has been very effective, see which Texas Board of Education. So effective, that AGW denialists, historical revisionists and similar nutjobs have adopted the same wedge strategy — making a mockery of public education.

It just pisses me off.

This has been in the back of my mind for awhile now:

“What makes Legal Schnauzer’s claims really of interest is the suggestion that the GOP overlords who backed Pryor’s judicial rise have been blackmailing him with these photos for years.”

I’ve often wondered if this isn’t the case with more than a few elected officials, and even more importantly, WHO is doing the blackmailing. As much as I loathe some of my current elected officials (I live in GA, these fucking people are NUTS), I just wonder if some of them might be more sane and more responsive to their constituents if someone wasn’t holding something over their heads. It’s amazing and suspicious to me that the TP got such a hold on government with such a minority and without threats and intimidation. I’ve seen this crazy in action up close, it’s not beyond belief that this is happening all over the country right now.

I think the tables need turning, someone should start serious deep background opposition research on the tea party leaders from local on up, I’m sure there’s some really nasty business hidden in a lot of closets there. More than some nude photos. The blackmailers of this judge could stand some scrutiny too, if this judge has been blackmailed.

Humans have routinely made decisions that expand far beyond their timeline. It’s fine to be a doomer, but deal with reality. Humans have engaged in engineering projects that took hundreds of years, even before the advent of things like ‘nationalism’.

Yes, but with quick returns that could be seen.

The Great Wall of China has a very long history, but those who built it did so for near term purposes.

The Hoover Dam could last for a very long time, but it very quickly returned value on its investment.

Humans do engage in long term projects, but again, these projects have near term positive feedback.

Pharaohs and Emperors engaged in their funerary and final resting places decades before they were needed, but with a definite personal goal, and the constructions were also national work projects.

Climate change mitigation is about benefitting people long after we’re dead. That’s a hard sell.

Yes, but with quick returns that could be seen.

This just isn’t true. There are hill forts, for god’s sake, from Stone Age Britain that were built by hand, growing a tiny bit every year, starting from a flat, flat plain. If you are willing to call a small, tactically useless hill of dirt an ‘immediate return’, then sure, but there’s plenty of environmental things that can be done that also have immediate return. From re-greening an area to erecting a wind tower, there’s very fast benefits from a lot of ‘green’ solutions to problems.

What you seem to be mistaking is the layer of abstraction—that AGW is a slow, slow process that needs to be understood through proxies—with a lack of commitment of human beings to build for the long-term. The latter isn’t true at all, but it is true that AGW is very hard to perceive and very abstract. That alone is sufficient to explain human inaction on it.

Hell, just the fact that we do have thousands, millions of environmentalists who understand this and work to change it disproves your point. Those are ‘humans’ too.

Government spending at all levels is far below the level of any other recent recovery. Sixteen quarters after the end of the recession, spending during past recoveries has been 7-15 percent higher than it was at the start. This time it’s 7 percent lower, despite the fact that the 2008-09 recession was the deepest of the bunch. Reagan, Clinton, and Bush all benefited from rising spending during the economic recoveries on their watches. Only Obama has been forced to manage a recovery while government spending has plummeted.

And there’s no end in sight. Ted Cruz will lose his battle to defund Obamacare. But the tea partiers have already won their battle to cripple the American economy and Obama’s presidency with it.

I also think that part of that on the part of Americans is the kind of people we are, or at least, what our mythology has built up: The individual and the rights of the individual above the common good of the group, not a meeting of both of those, and the choices with which we’re presented. For example, the personal vehicle vs public transportation; the individual house vs the “collectivism” of apt living or even living arrangements, such as the pushing of the “nuclear” family in place of “alternatives” such as the extended family or other arrangements, and a pushing out into suburbs and exurbs. American culture doesn’t allow for much innovation when a certain “ideal” is pushed in which the individual attains priority which is a direct connection to a consumerist society in which everyone must have everything for themselves in order to live “independently” of everyone else. The “preppers” are the ultimate realization of this mindset.

In fact, I’d say that the current “ideal” of a 5,000 sq ft house on an acre of land and multiple personal vehicles for 2-4 people is a foreign concept, albeit perhaps an attractive concept, to the majority of the world’s population which would see it as real wealth.

When we see ourselves thusly, it’s a hard sell to conserve natural resources rather than constant consumption, and it’s easier to see every govt effort to publicize global warming as suspect and not applicable to us as individuals. We’re at a crossroads, and most don’t even realize it.

“His deputy Mustafizur Rahman said about 300 factories, which make clothing for top Western retailers such as Walmart, were shut on Monday to contain the violence as protesting workers attacked plants that stayed open.

“The situation is extremely volatile. Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the unruly workers,” he told AFP, adding dozens of workers and several policemen were injured.”

He can’t say that the GOP is committing a gigantic blunder, but he’s undoubtedly hearing that all day long from his big money donors. I’m fairly certain this started out as somebody else’s very cautionary analogy told to Rand to persuade him not to back a Cruz filibuster, and when pressed he thought he could repurpose it by taking out all references to hubris, self delusion, consequences and tiger’s blood.

This is what I was alluding to in my #102. The American ideal of a single-family detached house with a grassy yard and a two-car garage is not sustainable in the long run without significant changes in urban planning and transportation designs.

But Americans are not the only culprits. China, for example, burns a profligate amount of coal for electricity as it tries to catch up economically to the developed world. Buildings here are not insulated at all, so the electric heat pumps most urban dwellers use to cool and heat their flats and condos are wasting power. Rural dwellers burn coal and wood for cooking and heat, which further adds greenhouse gases.

The kind of radical lifestyle changes that would be required to slow down or reverse global warming are just not going to happen in time, I fear. There are too many economic and social pressures in play.

I agree that a huge country like China (and other developing countries) have a lot of technical catching up to do in that area.

And I really should retire the word “push”—or have a thesaurus handy this early in the am. : ) But I still maintain that it doesn’t make sense that the American model of a consumerist society is sustainable, nor should it be desirable, but it is, in actuality, a shiny object for the rest of the world.

Working 20 hrs/wk would be great if we could get the $62/hr the traitor Snowden got. Hey, that’s $1240/wk, more than I ever made in my life, and plenty more than tens of millions make each week. That’s over $5K/mo, more than the median wage of around $50K/yr.

So, work people fewer hours, employing more people, raising wages, thus giving people more time for family and leisure?

Since we are discussing global warming and climate, here’s a quick update on Super Typhoon Usagi. Usagi has been downgraded to a tropical storm and is now dropping buckets of rain on Guangdong province, but weakening as it goes.
In my neck of the Chinese woods, Hunan, just north of Guangdong, we’ve had light rainfall all day. The temperatures have also dropped several degrees celsius.

Also, even though the part-time workers only get 20 hrs/wk, they have to make themselves available for scheduling changes at a moment’s notice, 24/7, so don’t even think of taking a second JRRB or going to school to better yourself.

For some weird reason I can’t figure out, there are people who will defend this shit. HURR HURR TWICE AS MENNY JRRBZ!!11 HOW MENNY JRRBZ HAS U CREEYATED?? MOOCHUR.

Believe me, I know, having worked retail myself. Even the restaurant industry and the rest of the retailers are using the same model now. There are no “full time” retail jobs unless you’re at store mgmt level of some sort.

Clearly people who have never worked two part-time jobs while supporting a family or paying for their education. Having a job does not always mean you can afford a house, a car and food, too.

Even after I pointed out that each Walmart store takes $900,000 of taxpayer money in the form of food stamps and government assistance for its underpaid employees, the standard answer is HURR HURR!!!1 THATZ STILL LESS THEN THE FOOD STAMPZ THEY WOOD GET IF THEY STAYED HOME ALL UNEMPLOYED WHICH WOOD HAPEN IF THEY CLOSED DOWN THERE STOREZ!!11!! That’s really good news, except for those who lost their lives. It could have been a hell of a lot worse.

And BTW, I suppose that “Hunan-style” food at the local Chinese eatery here isn’t authentic, right? I see what the Chinese employees eat (lots more rice and veggies), and that’s what I want, but it’s not on the menu which is meat, chicken or shrimp centered w/veggies for decoration. The Chinese employees are all slim and healthy looking, and the customers, well, not so much.

I usually stick w/the stir fried spicy garlic broccoli and if I’m feeling dangerous, the tofu. It’s enough for 2 meals, because I’m the only one who eats it.

You can ask for items that are not on the menu, especially if what you think the workers are eating looks good. If you show genuine interest, the cook should be happy to oblige.

Hunan-style means lots of chili peppers, either fresh or dried, and very little if any sugar. They use ginger, green onions and garlic a lot, too. Soysauce replaces salt in many dishes. Most dishes are stirfried, and some are steamed.

I was having my car serviced deep in the bowels of Rand-Land (Boone County, KY) and chatting with a guy in the waiting room. He described himself as a Tea Partier, but also said he liked Hillary Clinton and would vote for her. Not sure what this means or if there are other TP’ers that feel the same way, but I found that interesting.

I cannot even begin to imagine how this guy came to his conclusions. I guess I should be nicer to this person, but all it means is that he’s deeply confused and uninformed about politics.

Seriously, does this guy think that Clinton, if elected, will gut ACA/Obamacare? This line of thought makes no fucking sense.

You do have to give them credit. They’ve been so successful casting things as “race war” instead of “class war” that they have legions of willing drones to do their continued grassroots activism and recruitment. And as has been commented the conversion has been done so well that most of them do not realize that their pocket is being picked as well.

It probably pivots on one single and possibly obscure issue. And it’s also 2013 without the GOP candidate rolled out. If the guy thinks it’s going to be Christie, or maybe Santorum, then there might be some issue with them that makes him favor Hillary Clinton.

My brother has gone into Chinese restaurants and asked to be served whatever they’re feeding to the workers/family in the back. He favors going much heavier on the vegetables and rice and lighter on the meat/sauce. And he doesn’t mind the spicing.

However, he was eating in a place with his wife once (who speaks Mandarin and Cantonese and usually does the ordering) and the waitress came up and asked his wife something in Cantonese. My brother has picked up enough of the language to know she had been asked something like “Is white devil* enjoying his rice?” and he responded “Yes, very much, thank you” much to the waitress’ embarrassment.

New state survey shows one third of teachers would change their profession

A new survey of thousands of Wisconsin teachers found that nearly a third would “probably not” or “definitely not” choose the profession again, and 63 percent said they did not think the public appreciated the role teachers play in their children’s education.

Of the nearly 2,000 pre-K through 12th-grade teachers who took the Voices from the Classroom survey, 85 percent said they would like to see more interaction between the schools and the business community.

New state survey shows one third of teachers would change their profession

One thing I appreciate about teaching in China is the respect their entire culture has for teachers. We may not get a lot of money, but teachers may even have a higher status among the public than Chinese doctors, some of who are less than honest. My students are surprised to hear that the USA does not celebrate a Teacher’s Day as the Chinese do. Alas, I am still expected to teach on Teacher’s Day. (It was last Tuesday, BTW.)

But China shares the same top-down mentality of education as the States. The “experts” with the fancy degrees and political connections decide on policies, and the teachers just have to follow along.

Usually it is cooked alone with garlic or ginger, or sometimes together with meat (pork here, but I know that’s not useful in your case). Cut the vegetable lengthwise, discarding any seeds, then slice thinly. Parboiling it before stirfrying will take out some of the bitterness. Then you can fry a little garlic and ginger in oil, add the bitter melon and cook till soft. Some sugar will compensate for the bitterness. You can find fancier recipes online.

Bitter melon/gourd is reputed to have health benefits for diabetes and cancer sufferers.

Heritage Foundation proffered the idea of the individual mandate as a way to empower and give individual choice and put the onus on the person to have insurance.

The moment Obama co-opted the idea and made it his own as a way to attempt to garner GOP support, the GOP and Heritage turned against the idea calling it socialism or worse.

Never mind that it’s a way to provide access to health insurance for millions of people that would not have that ability. They’re not only looking to defund that, but the House chopped $4 billion from the SNAP program annually over the next 10 years as part of their appropriations package. Yeah, real compassionate.

They claim that the cuts wont affect people because it’s about chopping waste and graft.

Except that SNAP has a lower rate of fraud than the farm aid bill that helps agribusinesses that they increased funding for.

Dear Mr. Bozell,

Yes, I often make a fool of myself, that’s the risk one takes for being outspoken and passionate about one’s creative freedom. And no, I don’t think everyone I meet is an idiot, that wouldn’t make sense. I do however think you are an idiot and your not-for-progress organization, idiotic.

Anyone with half-a-cup of brain cells can filter out the noise of your conservative bellowing and hear the truth - it’s all about your own political agenda. You are desperately trying to create a lobby that matters. But you cannot. And it fucking kills you that after all these years, you and your hate club are still flaccid and impotent. And the reasons, sir, are quite obvious. You are not very bright, your message is archaic and loving parents can innately sense that the PTC has no heart and no real interest in the betterment of children.

You reek of McCarthyism and holy water. And right-minded folks can smell you coming a mile away.

So keep holding your non-attended press conferences and writing your little Fox blogs. Because with every post you solidify your true message: I’m just an angry white guy with an exclusionary plan, using fear and god to spread a gospel of ignorance.

And just so you have something to quote from this, to work up the four other members, tell them that the tattoo-covered, liberal freak who writes that baby-killing, urine dunking show, said this: “You’re a pathetic fucking douchebag and I bet your own kids fucking hate you.”

Godspeed.

My last year on active duty I rotated through shore patrol. I had to go through training to carry a pistol (and shotgun) while in uniform…..a lot of training. There are several good reasons why men and women who are trained to fire a weapon, are not allowed to keep weapons on base. First, although our troops are trained to fire and handle a weapon, most are not trained to handle armed conflicts especially armed conflicts outside of the battlefield. Next, if there is an armed conflict on base, the last thing we (shore patrol, MPs, civilian LEOs) want is individuals adding to the chaos by arming themselves and divert our resources trying to figure out who is the good guy and who is the bad guy. Third, even though our troops are trained to handle and fire weapons, they are too fucking immature to possess a weapon full time on base…think about it: kids (yes, they are kids for the most part) away from home for the first time, access to firearms, their bravado and testosterone, add booze into the mix…..that’s a recipe for disaster. In short, armed security should be left to those who are trained, and retrained, and then trained some more to handle conflicts. If anyone attempts to refute this fact, they are ignorant and should be mocked.

196 lawhawk  Mon, Sep 23, 2013 7:32:06am

re: #187 Lidane

Posted about this last week. The military had very good reasons to restrict firearms on base. The policy was promulgated in 1992 and made effective in 1993, and applied to across all the services. Prior to 1992, individual bases may have had different firearms rules. This standardized the rule.

But the reason is stated in the policy itself:

“To limit and control the carrying of firearms by DoD military and civilian personnel. The authorization to carry firearms shall be issued only to qualified personnel when there is a reasonable expectation that life or DoD assets will be jeopardized if firearms are not carried. Evaluation of the necessity to carry a firearm shall be made considering this expectation weighed against the possible consequences of accidental or indiscriminate use of firearms. DoD personnel regularly engaged in law enforcement or security duties shall be armed.

I was on active duty at the time (90 to 94) and rotated through 4 different naval air stations. Most base commanders already banned firearms to all personnel other than shore patrol.

A bit late to the Ginnifer party, I know — but I recall that when this whole Flowers thing broke, she was preparing to do a presser in NYC. Back in the pre-satellite days, Howard Stern was fond of sending his staffer Stuttering John to meet celebrities and ask inappropriate questions. Somehow, John managed to get into the presser — and he managed to ask a question: “Miss Flowers, were you planning on sleeping with any other candidates this season?”.

He was removed from the room. I laughed. (Needless to say, his removal was the only response to the question, other than the laughter of the assembled reporters….)

232 lawhawk  Mon, Sep 23, 2013 8:32:29am

I have a real bad feeling about the ongoing hostage situation in the Kenyan mall. If these particular terrorists are like those that attacked the Mumbai hotels, or the terrorists who attacked Beslan or Moscow theaters, the attack by security forces to free those being held will lead to significant casualties among the hostages. I hope I’m wrong, but these particular terrorists from al Shabaab are following those models - inflicting maximum casualties at each phase of their attack.

Also, would it be surprising that there may be at least an American among the terrorists involved? Awlaki and others indicate that Americans have joined al Qaeda in the past, and extremists from all over the world engage in terrorism.

If anything, that would once again indicate the need for the NSA to conduct surveillance in order to potentially spot these bad actors before they carry out attacks. It also highlights the importance of securing failed states and clearing out warlords and terror groups from those regions because they become breeding grounds for terror operations elsewhere in the world. Kenya was targeted because they went after al Shabaab. I’d expect something similar against Ethiopia down the road, to say nothing of the usual assorted threats against Israel, the US, etc.

re: #232 lawhawk

Last night I read a very interesting BBC article about Al-Shabaab, a group I didn’t know much about before this incident, apart from being aware that they’re based in Somalia.

It seems that their previous “spiritual” leader, a veteran militant Islamist by the name of Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys was chased out of the movement by “hardliners” earlier this year. (I shudder to think of what constitutes a hardliner amongst these guys.)

Anyway, more about him & his ouster below. Seems like Al-Sahbaab has been having a civil war between various factions (some of which were killing off Western converts who’d gone there to fight).

I don’t know if this makes them more or less dangerous, but the bolded portion below creeped me out. Trying to follow all the threads made my head swim—not just the different groups/factions, but there’s a whole bunch of nationalist/tribal stuff going on too, then you add in AQ and their desire for global jihad and… gah. O_o

Will Somali Islamist purge strengthen al-Shabab?

Mr Aynte said Mr Aweys - who had been designated a terrorist by the US and UN in 2001 - preferred a “primarily nationalist ideology” in Somalia.

“For more than three decades, Aweys defined Somalia’s narrative of political Islam, earning him both friends and foes within the Islamic movements… He argued that Islam is the only answer for Somalia and can be the only uniting factor against tribalism and factionalism,” he said.

As for the younger generation led by Mr Godane, they are simply “caught up in the cult of martyrdom” fuelled by al-Qaeda, says Mr Abdi.

“They don’t care about public opinion. They want to establish an Islamic state through military conquest, and they love martyrdom more than power,” he told the BBC.

However, it is far from clear that Mr Godane has the backing of al-Qaeda.

“Two months ago, Ibrahim al-Afghani wrote an open letter to Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of al-Qaeda, in which he criticised Godane for targeting foreign jihadists, imprisoning them in secret detention centres in the areas the terror group controls, and even killing them,” Mr Abukar says. […]

In a perfect world this attack would draw a massive international response. Kenya doesn’t have the military power to eradicate Al Shabaab. I kind of doubt the African Union could do it wither. UN is impotent. NATO could probably do it but probably won’t. AL Shabaab could still survive as a terrorist organization but there’s no excuse for letting them continue as a military force.

re: #245 sattv4u2

I did too. As reported (that there were females amongst the group, if not leading it) would have been a big shift from previous fundy terrorist assaults on public places

It’s not actually something all that new.

Terror’s ‘invisible women’

Since 1985, terrorism’s so-called invisible women have accounted for a quarter of fatal attacks in Iraq, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Chechnya, Sri Lanka, Morocco and Palestine. My research found that by mid-2008, women had acted as suicide bombers 21 times in Iraq’s markets and other civilian venues patronized by Shiites.

Other research has demonstrated that since 2002 women have carried out fully 50% of suicide attacks in Sri Lanka, Turkey and Chechnya.

So why do we think of violent jihadists as largely male? One reason is that terrorism observers, mostly men who have historically focused on men at war, tend to view women who participate in acts of terrorism as exceptions. Given women’s increasingly violent roles in jihadist organizations, however, researchers overlook females as effective killers at our peril. […]

The situation in Somalia with competing al Shabaab factions duking it out to see who gets to be more extreme than the next guy has a similar component to the Islamists in Syria fighting against Assad. Some are pushing for creation of an Islamic caliphate in their own image, while others are looking to maximize carnage, and others fall between the two.

The result of the attack on the Kenyan mall may be for the Kenyans to again go after al Shabaab in Somalia - perhaps targeting one faction versus another (or all). Or they’ll get assistance from the US to go after them via UAV strikes. I think the latter route is likely.

They don’t want to inconvenience too many people when they shut everything down.

Regarding H. Clinton (and Bryan Fisher’s homoerotic fantasies), the right wing cannot even get its own story straight. Is Huma Abedin supposed to be Hilary’s secret lesbian lover OR a covert Muslim Brotherhood operative? Given the hard-line Islamic views on homosexuality, she cannot be both…

A girl terrorist exploded in a supermarket next to another girl the same age.

And then there was the woman who was receiving treatment at a burn clinic, who was apprehended before she could carry out her plan to explode in the hospital that was treating her. I am not sure if she was released in the trade for Gilad Shalit.

One of the most destructive bus bombings in Israel, No. 19, IIRC, was female.

Nope, not No. 19. Will check others.

One I could find quickly:

en.wikipedia.org

There were enough female bombers in Israel before 2000 that theories of motivation were created, including a pattern of love affairs/arranged marriages frustrating young women.

Can’t vouch this site, but the reviewed book on child and female suicide bombers seems mainstream.
