Tea Partying: When Protest Movements Defend the Interests of the Ultra-Rich

Business • Views: 51,669

Four years ago, the modern tea party seemed to emerge from nowhere, leaving journalists bewildered and the public with few reference points to understand seemingly spontaneous rallies by middle-class people seeking lower tax rates. A search for the phrase “tea party” in connection with “politics” in major newspapers yielded fewer than 100 mentions in 2008 — and when the words did appear linked together, they suggested studied formality and decorum. The next year, they appeared more than 1,500 times, often connected to “protest demonstration.”

But little was spontaneous about the new party. “Social movements that explicitly defend the interests of the rich and the almost-rich have been a recurring feature of American politics,” Isaac William Martin, a sociologist at the University of California, San Diego, reminds us in his new book, Rich People’s Movements: Grassroots Campaigns to Untax the One Percent. “Such movements shook the American polity before the Obama era, before the Reagan era and before Barry Goldwater ran for president — before, even, the New Deal.”

With meticulous research, Martin shows how the modern tea party grew from decades of efforts by American oligarchs to de-tax themselves. They relied on cranks, rogues and a few scholars to polish the most effective ideological marketing pitches. Their goal was selling the notion that if the rich bear less of the burden of government, all of us will somehow end up better off. These pitches have worked best when some newly proposed government initiative — like President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act — arrives to pose the threat of major policy change. They have depended on diverting attention from obvious questions, such as just how does a smaller tax bill for the Koch brothers benefit us?

Spanning decades, the residue of relationships, movement-building skills and organizations from past enlistments of the affluent many to agitate for the interests of the super-elite few could be seen merely as an example of what Seymour Martin Lipset and Earl Raab called “cultural baggage” in their 1971 book The Politics of Unreason: Right-Wing Extremism in America, 1790-1970. Instead, Martin says, these movements bequeathed to us “not just a suitcase we drag along behind us” but “a toolkit” to remake American public policy. Martin also concurs with historian Richard Hofstadter, who pointed out a half-century ago how many practitioners of his famous theory — the paranoid style in American politics — found their roots in the arrival, in 1913, of the 16th Amendment. That amendment, ratified on the eve of World War I, resolved disputes over the meaning of the phrase “direct taxes shall be apportioned,” and in doing so ushered in the modern income tax.

20+ years of listening to Rush Limbaugh and his clones blather on about how the rich are the most oppressed group in America does have an effect.

I actually was just rereading Adam Smith today and he has a section on this that is just fucking perfect:

When we consider the condition of the great, in those delusive colours in which the imagination is apt to paint it, it seems to be almost the abstract idea of a perfect and happy state. It is the very state which, in all our waking dreams and idle reveries, we had sketched out to ourselves as the final object of all our desires. We feel, therefore, a peculiar sympathy with the satisfaction of those who are in it. We favour all their inclinations, and forward all their wishes. What pity, we think that any thing should spoil and corrupt so agreeable a situation! … Every calamity that befalls them, every injury that is done to them, excites in the breast of the spectator ten times more compassion and resentment than he would have felt, had the same things happen to other men.

From “The Theory of Moral Sentiments”.

I wish more ‘conservatives’ would actually read Smith.

Oh good grief…Cruz is comparing defund Obamacare to

sending man to moon
standing up to Soviet union

“Cant be done” he said about the naysayers for those efforts

Un-fucking-real

The better comparison to those accomplishments would be getting health care reform passed in the first place.

It’s all about the blame game.

Through the astroturfing efforts, these corporations have been able to convince the lower classes that big government and over regulation are solely to blame for the struggles they face.

So where’s his outrage at corporate welfare. Oh, that’s right, corporate welfare is totes different from helping poor families because you know the Bible says something about governments coddling the very wealthy at the expense of the rest of us. Mr. Fischer’s entitled to hate welfare all he wants but that he feels the need to do it under Christian pretenses is disgusting.

There were almost no regulatory issues regarding environment in Smith’s day, and on a moral level he was opposed to abuses of workers. He’s basically misunderstood by everyone citing him in defense of laissez faire.

I’m not familiar with that name, but you’re exatcly right that Smith wasn’t saying “We should be laissez faire capitalist instead of socialist”, he was saying “We should be laissez faire instead of mercantilist”— the ‘laissez faire’ Smith is advocating is between nations and about not having ‘guilds’ inside the nation that restrict trade there.

Smith would not be against government regulating a company so that it couldn’t poison its workers, but he would be against the NFL and MLB’s monopolistic practices.

Any increase will be taken as proof that Obamacare caused the increase, even though prices were increasing annually for decades on end with Obamacare not even part of the discussion. Prices go up for lots of reasons, but Obamacare also provides a mechanism to reduce the cost to taxpayers who make up to 400% of the poverty level - capping their out-of-pocket costs to 12% of their income.

Also watch for the apples to oranges confusion - comparing a gold plan to a bare bones plan operative before the exchanges begin accepting patients will be a go-to tactic. You’ve got to see through that nonsense - where the new exchange plans offer far more comprehensive care, preventative care, and no longer have lifetime caps versus the basic plans offered in some states that provide for catastrophic care and little else.

A quick look seems to indicate that Fischer got through college (Stanford) and theology school and has essentially been a pastor and/or commentator the entire time since then. Did a stint as a park commissioner in Boise - but I think that was centered around defending a 10 Commandments memorial there.

So it appears he’s been living off parents and/or church flocks and contributions his entire life. Whether or not one wants to hold this as pretty much living off “welfare” the whole time is personal opinion regarding the value of supporting spiritual leaders and advisers.

I guess someone can ask him how ungrateful he feels towards the parishioners who supported him for 25 years.

What an asshat. And when this fails, some in the GOP will see him as a hero, even though he’s fighting against a program that would expand access to health insurance to 30 million Americans.

Heck, some GOPers are complaining that 100,000s of Americans aren’t getting health insurance because of Obamacare, except that would be because the GOP fought Obamacare every step of the way and limited how many people would get coverage - just as they’re fighting the implementation and hoping that they have inflicted enough chaos and uncertainty in the process to make Obamacare stumble as it heads into the signing up period.

Obamacare actually helps increase mobility because it makes insurance available to those who don’t have jobs or have jobs that aren’t providing insurance benefits. If anything, it enhances mobility to where the jobs are.

It also increases the chances that someone will change jobs to further their careers because they wont be tied to a job because they have insurance.

Honestly, I think Reid’s just letting Cruz and Lee make very public asses of themselves. With McConnell signaling that he will not support a filibuster or support Ted’s craziness about demanding a 60-vote threshold on any amendments, the odds are good that Reid has the votes for cloture.

Give Back? Yes, It’s Time For The 99% To Give Back To The 1%

It’s time to gore another collectivist sacred cow. This time it’s the popular idea that the successful are obliged to “give back to the community.” That oft-heard claim assumes that the wealth of high-earners is taken away from “the community.” And beneath that lies the perverted Marxist notion that wealth is accumulated by “exploiting” people, not by creating value-as if Henry Ford was not necessary for Fords to roll off the (non-existent) assembly lines and Steve Jobs was not necessary for iPhones and iPads to spring into existence.

Irony of all this is that this would be the perfect time to stand up and articulate a real GOP alternative to the ACA. They claim all the time that they have ideas, well now would be the time to put them out there. Present to the American people how you expect to give the millions that have no affordable access to health care the means of obtaining it with “free market solutions.”

But of course that would only work if the GOP had any alternatives.

When people talk about how great Henry Ford was, they forget to mention that the first company that he created failed, the second ended up becoming Cadillac, and the third nearly collapsed due to poor sales and inability to pay the Dodge brothers for parts he’s contracted them to supply.

Of course, that all ignores that Ford didn’t create the automobile or the assembly line, he was just the guy who figured out you could marry the two, building an inexpensive car on an assembly line, and churn them out so quickly that volume drove down costs. Then atop that, he did something no other automaker did and which still to this day light’s peoples heads afire when a company does it: He paid his workers enough that they could afford the very cars they built, not only providing a ready market for his products, but also driving down turnover costs.

Grothman to Mellen Residents: “Trust the Company”

The O’Dovero-Flesia farm sits at the base of the hills, within a mile of the first planned phase of the mine. The plan calls for 5.5 million tons of explosives to be dropped on the hills every nine days until the pit measures 4.5 miles long. The family has been farming this 1,000 acre farm for five generations. They raise dairy and beef cows, and operate a meat processing facility. They are deeply concerned about the quality of the air and water should this mine come into operation.

On a visit to their farm last weekend, Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) tried to convince them to support the bill and trust Gogebic Taconite. To address their concerns about the 1,000 foot deep open pit draining their 150 foot deep source of water, Grothman told them that the company could caulk the cracks in the bedrock where water was leaking out.(emph. mine)

Why Ted Cruz’s Anti-Obamacare Grandstanding Doesn’t Matter At All

Cruz’s dramatic anti-Obamacare crusade has captured media attention for weeks. But when it comes to the realities of health reform, it couldn’t matter less.

First of all, it’s not a real filibuster. Whether or not Cruz keeps speaking, and regardless of how long he ends up going on, the Senate will still vote on the continuing resolution tomorrow. This weekend, even Fox News was confused about why Cruz thought this political ploy could work.

And even if the provision in question that seeks to “defund Obamacare” somehow managed to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate, it wouldn’t actually do anything to bring the health reform law to a grinding halt. The main avenues of reform that will extend health coverage to additional Americans — the Medicaid expansion and the subsidies available to help people buy plans on the state-level marketplaces — aren’t affected by the fight over annual appropriations.

If Cruz and his fellow Tea Party Republicans successfully derail the budget negotiations altogether and force the government to shut down, that won’t stop Obamacare implementation from marching forward, either. Much of the money that finances health reform has already been appropriated, and can only be removed if the law is repealed altogether. In an opinion piece published last week, E.J. Dionne suggested that a government shutdown could actually ironically help the law’s popularity. That’s because, if the health law’s enrollment period experiences a few hiccups along the way (as any new government program undoubtedly will), this political battle may convince Americans that Republicans are actually to blame for that.

Then atop that, he did something no other automaker did and which still to this day light’s peoples heads afire when a company does it: He paid his workers enough that they could afford the very cars they built, not only providing a ready market for his products, but also driving down turnover costs.

actually, official ford history records the name of the ford engineer who originally thought of marrying the assembly line to car production and suggested it to ford

but both ford and jobs had a vision of bringing an expensive, elite product to the masses, and the relentless drive and financial savvy to carry out the task

I’ve often been amazed at the poor quality of thinking I hear from people who take JUST ENOUGH econ courses to learn all sorts of axioms and ‘laws’, but not enough to start applying logic and seeing contradictions. For example, one guy told me that

1) Consumers set prices for nonessentials. Raise the price too much and they won’t pay.

and

2) Businesses don’t pay taxes. They just pass the cost on to the customer.

If #1 is true, then there are limits to what costs businesses can pass along, and thus a tax may be paid in part by reducing profits. They understand this, because they believe a tax can put a company out of business, but they STILL quote #2 as if it were invariably true.

Then they tell you you don’t understand economics if you point that out to them.

That story hit a nerve with me because when I lived in Illinois, we had a HUGE Waste Management landfill that was leaching into the ground water, from which our municipal and private wells got water.
The Waste Management guy stood in front of all of us a public meeting after the reports of contamination were released and, with a straight face, told us we had nothing to worry about because “we have the technology to pump that water out of the ground, purify and put it back good as nature intended.”
