New Frontiers in GOP Ridiculousness: Ted Cruz’s Faux Filibuster

The right wing base will love it anyway
Politics • Views: 33,201

You may have thought the Republican Party’s irrational hatred of Obamacare couldn’t possibly get any more ridiculous, but think again: Ted Cruz Launches Faux Filibuster as Senate Readies Spending Bill Vote.

Congress continued its steady march toward a government shutdown Tuesday with another round of posturing but little action to keep the government running past next Monday.

Both the Democratic and Republican leaders in the Senate seemed poised to speed up a vote on a spending bill from House Republicans that would have funded the government through Dec. 15 but stripped out funding for the Affordable Care Act. Many Senate Republicans were prepared to vote for the measure, which they favored, and Democrats were ready to get their hands on the bill so they could amend it and restore funding for the law.

But that possibility ground to a halt as Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, took to the Senate floor to deliver a lengthy speech (that technically is not a filibuster, because of the Senate’s procedural rules). He began talking at 2:41 p.m. ET, announcing that “I intend to speak against Obamacare until I am no longer able to stand.”

That’s right — Cruz is not actually “filibustering,” just standing there yakking, and it’s completely meaningless. He won’t delay the vote for one second.

All you can do is point and laugh.

UPDATE at 9/24/13 3:02:25 pm

And then it got even more ridiculous:

Cruz filibuster=2 million motorcycles in DC.

2 Targetpractice  Tue, Sep 24, 2013 2:40:56pm

Even funnier, he negotiated with Reid to get permission to put on this little dog and pony show. This couldn’t be more staged if you had Glenn Beck sitting in a director’s chair, going “Action!”

This.

Conservatism as currently constituted believes Government is only ‘by the people’ if THEY are the people running it. Hence, criticizing Bush was treason, whereas BEING Obama is treason. Hence, complaining about the nonexistent “huge expansion” of government under Obama, but LOVING the ACTUAL expansion of government under Bush.

I know. I’m just not sure whether I’d be happier if they recognized the filibuster for the pointless exercise it actually is, or keep them in happy ignorance. After all, if they realized it was a waste of time and energy they might insist on more effective action of some sort.

Reid did appear to have prior knowledge of Cruz’s intention to launch into a speech, which is not quite a filibuster because a cloture vote will take place Wednesday regardless of what he does.

Someone help me do the math on this one.

The link says the new island off of Pakistan is ~100 feet long. However, that doesn’t seem to be correct from the pictures.

It is also stated to be 30-40 feet high, and a half mile (.8 km) off shore.

Any way from that to work out how long the island is in the picture?

It’s like I said downstairs, we’ve all seen an example of what Ted is doing now, of an insufferable asshole going off on everybody because he knows his ass is about to be fried. They see it as some form of “speaking truth to power,” while the rest of us just recognize it as Ted being Ted.

No Bryan, that’s taxation and it was even around back when Jesus lived.

The other point about this would be that the Government in Jesus’ day was an occupying force, from a monarchy a long way away, which maintained its ascendancy by force of arms. Here, we have a government whose authority derives from the consent of the governed. The government is, as others said, US, not some alien entity imposed upon us from afar.

But again, to them it’s only legitimate if it does what they want, and then only if they’re at the reins.

They really don’t grasp the concept.

Apparently it hasn’t been featured on Fox News either, though I gather there has been some mention. (Don’t have cable, myself.)
I believe business owners and the like are starting to get really worried about a government shut-down.

I was reading somewhere on the intertoobz a few days ago that the Chamber of Commerce is starting to pressure on the GOP; they are getting concerned about the possibility of the shutdown, and I think the COC wants the GOP to rein in the wingnuttier elements of their party.

Here’s the deal- The ACA is going to work. It will have problems (as any new piece of legislation would) but they will be solved, refined and improved. The Republicans know this, and that’s why they are batshit crazy about it. While I know that what Cruz, et al are doing is raising shitloads of money for their future ambitions, wouldn’t it be better politically to just let the Democrats own the ACA? Let ‘em own it! If the damned thing is truly going to bring ‘Murica to her knees, then let the Democrats own it and deal with the ramifications in the 2014 mid-terms, right??!! Republicans said Medicare would destroy America. WRONG. Same thing about Medicaid. WRONG. And on and on and on. I spit on these losers, all of them.

Empty F-16 jet tested by Boeing and US Air Force

bbc.co.uk

“The jet - which had previously sat mothballed at an Arizona site for 15 years - flew at an altitude of 40,000ft (12.2km) and a speed of Mach 1.47 (1,119mph/1,800km/h).

“It carried out a series of manoeuvres including a barrel roll and a “split S” - a move in which the aircraft turns upside down before making a half loop so that it flies the right-way-up in the opposite direction. This can be used in combat to evade missile lock-ons.”

However, a spokesman for the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots warned of the temptation to use them in warfare.

“I’m very concerned these could be used to target people on the ground,” said Prof Noel Sharkey.

“I’m particularly worried about the high speed at which they can travel because they might not be able to distinguish their targets very clearly.

“There is every reason to believe that these so-called ‘targets’ could become a test bed for drone warfare, moving us closer and closer to automated killing.”

We’ve had automated killing since guns.

Crossbows. That’s where it started. No skill required, just point and click.

But enough about Republican gun owners.

See, back in my day, you had to actually aim the bow and draw it with your own strength. None of this high-falutin’ crank and click business. We hiked to archery school 20 miles, in the snow, uphill both ways. Now GET OFF MY LAWN!

But without the benefit of Santorum’s bland, blank face. Cruz’s assholeness is written all over his mug.

There seems to be some genetic predisposition to having a punchable face that causes people to become GOP politicians.

The Mrs. Fish would be fascinated. She has some skill with a bow. I can shoot, but I’m definitely on the far beginner end of the spectrum.

That was a really nice Yew stave. No knots except one in the handle riser area. I made it into an American Longbow - wider and flatter than an English Longbow, with a rigid handle versus the fully working handle area of an ELB. Sweet shooter, too - quiet, fast, no shock. But I haven’t shot it in a dog’s age.

Spent most of the day debugging our code that communicates with PayPal for the new subscription feature. It suddenly decided not to work, after working fine for a long time; I’m pretty sure PayPal changed something about their IPN (Instant Payment Notification) system, and it stopped accepting post-backs to the non-HTTPS version of their URL.

Wasn’t easy to track down, but the bad code was buried in a PHP class I’d been using for years. Rather than try to edit that, I just wrote a new IPN listener from scratch. So now if things go wrong, I have only myself to blame.

Was the old class a third-party library you’d picked up along the way?

I don’t know, but I’m old enough to remember when working less and spending more time with the family, and on leisure was considered a laudable goal for a society. That, and financial security and a decent retirement.

How times have changed.

re: #218 Charles Johnson

Exactly.

Third-party libs are a blessing and a curse. They can save an awful lot of effort reinventing the wheel, but they can be such a pain in the rear when something breaks (either due to external API changes or an actual bug in the library).

if it stopped working on my retail site, how would i be able to tell? my site runs on a bunch of PHP code that somebody else wrote for me years ago. i don’t get sales every day, so if people have been trying to buy my product but not getting anywhere, i wouldn’t know for a long time unless somebody told me about it

which library messes it up?
