Popular Science: Why We’re Shutting Off Our Comments

Essentially because they are tired of dealing with the bullshit coming from the anti-science right wing

A politically motivated, decades-long war on expertise has eroded the popular consensus on a wide variety of scientifically validated topics. Everything, from evolution to the origins of climate change, is mistakenly up for grabs again. Scientific certainty is just another thing for two people to “debate” on television. And because comments sections tend to be a grotesque reflection of the media culture surrounding them, the cynical work of undermining bedrock scientific doctrine is now being done beneath our own stories, within a website devoted to championing science.

At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone on the right started a drive to change the name of the publication to Unpopular Science.

There is an alternative to shutting down comments, but it doesn’t seem to be very popular at corporate websites because it means risking being unpopular — set policies about what’s acceptable and strictly enforce them, including the follow-up work to make sure trolls don’t simply re-register. And don’t be afraid of the fallout.

I’ve noticed on some news “paper” sites comments are either being not added to stories or are being shutdown not long after articles are posted.

The problem is that it’s really hard to remain fair. I just left a moderated forum because the place has developed a severe right wing slant.

People on the left and centre are finding it harder and harder to state opinions. They have to be treated as fact, and cited. The person cannot even be suspected of being discourteous to the other posters. Otherwise, public dick slapping by one or more mods.

People on the right do not operate under these strictures.

It used to be almost as interesting and fun as this place to discuss politics and current events. Now it’s rather like Russia under Putin.

I’m not sure what happened.

The problem is that it’s really hard to remain fair. I just left a moderated forum because the place has developed a severe right wing slant.

People on the left and centre are finding it harder and harder to state opinions. They have to be treated as fact, and cited. The person cannot even be suspected of being discourteous to the other posters. Otherwise, public dick slapping by one or more mods.

People on the right do not operate under these strictures.

It used to be almost as interesting and fun as this place to discuss politics and current events. Now it’s rather like Russia under Putin.

I’m not sure what happened.

The leftists were probably winning too many arguments with their “facts” and “logic.”

Corporations like the publisher of PopSci do not want to turn down customers. They could of course pay someone to monitor the comments and give replies to the know-nothings, but after a while the know-nothings will go nuclear and the paid-expert commenter will have to flush the person. That might work once in a while, but like newspapers and their “letters to the editors”, the editors tend not to reply to the letter writer because the whole point of publishing these letters is to get customers to believe they can have their 15 seconds of fame, and thus continue to faithfully read the publication.

Below, I present to you an even more plausible pathway to victory for Ted Cruz and defund Obamacare movement, in just six steps. Read up, GOP establishment:

Step One: A meteor hits Joe Biden.

Step Two: With Biden temporarily (it was a small meteor) unable to perform his duties as vice president, Barack Obama shocks the political world by nominating Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert to replace him.

“I really do love the book Team of Rivals,” Obama declares at the press conference. “And Louie makes great ribs.”

Acceding to the president’s wishes, Gohmert is rapidly confirmed by Congress.

Step Three: The Chicago Bulls offer President Obama a contract to be their point guard for the upcoming season. Tired of dealing with Syria and what he terms “those morons” in Congress, Obama decides to fulfill his boyhood dream and accept the offer. He promptly resigns the presidency.

Step Four: Louie Gohmert is sworn in as the 45th President of the United States. In an address from the Oval Office with his feet resting on his desk, Gohmert promises the “Gohmertization of America.”

Step Five: At Gohmert’s request, Chuck Norris, Sully Sullenberger, Jerry Seinfeld, and the cast of “Duck Dynasty” team up and threaten to campaign against any Democratic senator who refuses to vote to defund Obamacare. Under the specter of near-certain electoral defeat, Democratic senators running for re-election in 2014 immediately declare their support for defunding Obamacare.

Step Six: The House and Senate pass a continuing resolution that defunds Obamacare and President Louie Gohmert signs it into law. “With Obamacare defeated, or at least defunded for one year,” Gohmert declares, “I will seek from Congress a declaration of war against the Republican establishment.”

In working on my latest book Perv, some of the saddest material I came across involved the stormy cross-cultural conflicts erupting between Western ideals of sex and those discovered among other “exotic” societies. The field of cultural anthropology has its own dark history in this regard. For an embarrassingly long time, in fact, some unethical scholars were in the dubious business of publishing thinly veiled “ethnopornographies” of their trusting subjects. With revealing titles such as Untrodden Fields of Anthropology (1898), Neger-Eros (1928), and Erotikon (1966), these researchers seemed far less concerned about educating Western audiences than they were in titillating readers with lurid true stories of savage lust. Some of these scandalous volumes even included explicit “photodocumentation” of the subjects at hand, which arguably involved the production of sexually exploitative images of indigenous people.

It’s disturbing stuff. Yet in terms of the sheer amount of damage that Westerners have done to other cultures in response to their simply having different (and usually harmless) sexual customs from our own, religious missionaries definitely take the cake. In a distressingly large number of cases, the Church’s historical encroachment into far-flung corners of the globe has served to level whole societies through its many aggressive campaigns to save “savage” souls from their carnal “sins.”

The debate over evolution vs. creationism is once again heating up in Austin. Specifically, whether or not textbooks should include facts about creationism.

Both ideas have been debated since Darwin first published his theory over 150 years ago, and evolution is the only one currently taught in Texas classrooms.

They are both based on facts and both come with bias and assumptions.

But consider this:

I am not going to argue the merits of why I believe God created the earth and man in it. The majority of people already believe that.

This is not a debate of science vs. religion. This debate is about what are we going to teach our children in public schools. The theory of evolution is already in the textbooks. Creationism is widely accepted across the globe. It’s time the public school system in Texas accept that and include it in the classroom.

Mitt’s argument against ACA, despite it being almost identical to his plan, was that ACA was “forced on America without bipartisan support”, whereas his plan had support from the Democrats.

The Republican Party “[has] become too reactionary,” [Jeb] Bush said. “We have not been as positive, offering concrete proposals that are based on the principle that future is incredibly bright.”

Republicans’ principles are less likely to survive in a nation where the number of people believing in God is decreasing. Heavily influenced by liberal mainstream media and other countries’ worldviews, Americans have begun to look abroad for examples, abandoning their traditional faith. Most atheists and pagans don’t think aborting a baby after 20 weeks is murder if they don’t believe in God in the first place. From their point of view, opposing gay marriage, abortion and big government is seen as nothing more than an old-fashioned and reactionary position and anti-liberty, whereas Republicans regard it as the right thing to do to prevent people from performing evil acts and defend innocent lives. The connection between Republicans and the majority has been breaking since more Americans started adopting other worldviews.

The Republican Party would have garnered the support from libertarians that are a rising force since the economic recession in 2008. Republicans and libertarians are allies by nature because, if nothing else, both oppose the fiscal expansion of the government. However, strong resistance among the Party remains because some Republicans despise the idea that government doesn’t have the right to regulate social and moral issues, which libertarians believe.

If Republicans want to restore the popularity that they had during Ronald Reagan’s time, they must start by educating the youth about why their ideas and principles trump their rival Democrats and how these principles have made the U.S. stand out and will keep doing so. Winning voters who are non-white Christians doesn’t require loosening the ground of principles. The most important strategy is sending the public good messages rather than adding more restrictions and rules without compelling persuasion.

Lots of historical revisionism going on here. The writer has that glibertarian view of the past, some mythical view of God and country.

I’m coming across a rash of college newspapers that seem to be going far right. The Kansas State college newspaper in particular, but this column in the NC State paper is just one more indication of this phenomenon.

I strongly suspect that state college campus newspapers have fallen under the delusion that honest reporting means every position has to be equally true and represented.

I noted earlier today that this was a perfect opportunity for Ted or another Republican to step in and present the party’s alternative to the ACA. Thrill us with the GOP’s answers to how they will make health insurance affordable to the millions who don’t have it while reducing costs to those who do and ensuring ample access to all.

But that assumes something not in evidence, namely that the GOP actually has an alternative, rather than a lot of hot air and a few giveaways to the insurance companies that they wave in front of the cameras when they want to be thought of as actually having ideas.

Before I got a Driver’s license I got a Glider pilot’s cert and will post a pic of the Hoopster flashing the peace sign getting ready to fly a smoking hot girl in a Glider from Calistoga..I was a Freshman in College and my dad worked for the FAA for 33 years.. I can’t forget our first glider..My buddy bought it..We put it together..He walked it to the edge of a cliff and then..He just rose up..Whoa..It was amazing.He just rose up like magic..and full of grace..Then he turned upside down in a second..And slide down edge of the cliff and out of sight just like a movie.. Just gone..It was kindof funny but really shocking.
A bad Sunday for Glider pilot’s in Napa.. We didn’t have cell phones back then. So one guy climbed down the cliff and I hiked to a farm house a mile back to call the police to call a copter and reclaim the body.

I started accelerated freefall classes when I was younger but I couldn’t keep up with the payments. Skydiving is great fun. Very dangerous of course. Basejumping even more so. When I was skydiving, I was following this guy (reading his recovery online) Dead MIke. He chronicles his experience after his horrible skydiving accident:

On August 3, 1997 around 5 PM at the World Freefall Convention in Quincy, Illinois, Michael B. Vederman, after a successful skydive, got into a parachute collision with South African Andy Anderson’s body about 30 seconds before landing. Mike fell about 80 feet and struck the concrete runway almost horizontal, face down.
Mike broke both femurs, both knees, left kneecap, right foot big toe, left elbow, right arm radius, mandible (lower jaw), maxilla (upper jaw), nose, orbits (eyeball sockets) and palate in mouth. Mike also lost 10 pints of blood, 19 teeth and 25 pounds of fat/muscle. He has various nerve damage.

He went on to skydive again.

A very awkward moment yesterday afternoon after a bout of play between the 3 yr old neighbor and my 3 yr old g-grandson when the daddy of the neighbor told them little A would have to leave to visit g-parents. The boys started hugging and would have kissed each other, but A’s daddy: “No kissing! Boys don’t kiss each other!” So sad, cutting off half the human race in that statement. Such is the fear of “turning” kids into the dreaded “homoseckuals”.

“Old curmudgeon granny”, taken aback: “Aw, how sweet, all that love!” Among other protestations, I might add. But A is such a genius, which his over-competitive mommy is so quick to bring up in her not-so-subtle criticism of my parenting style (allowing J to play computer games like daddy) and her ignorance of different styles of learning. J can already operate a computer, Xbox, and loves books and he doesn’t have to “perform” on demand. His motor skills are pretty developed right now even if he doesn’t already “know” the alphabet, and he’s a very “social” kid, more so than many adults. Kids learn at their own pace and in different styles, not those of other kids, are influenced by their environment, and no one can predict the future, even as you provide guidance for kids.

We can never base success on what a child has “achieved” at 3 yrs, but most of all, for J, I hope he’s a loving, kind, and considerate person and develops a passion for learning in his own way, which he seems to be doing. No one should ever be put in a box, and I’m all for redefining a “successful life”.

So, when I got some nitwit on Twitter claiming that a single mom would be paying more for health care than before, and did so in all caps because she read the law (all caps again), I just laugh because the facts tell a completely different tale.

These folks think that someone who can now afford health insurance because of the exchanges is in a worse position than before - because they have to pay for insurance. Never mind that they were priced out of insurance previously, and people making up to 400% of the poverty level would get credits/subsidies to bring down the cost to the capped amount based on income.

The Democrats’ bet on the Affordable Care Act is that it’s like green eggs and ham—they’re convinced the public will like it when they try it.

Conservatives like Cruz claim that this is wrong. That Americans will taste the green eggs and ham and they’re going to hate it. But their actions speak otherwise. They’re desperate to repeal the law before it’s implemented. And in terms of the 2012 elections, that was fair enough. But they lost in 2012. Now instead of acting like they’re confident that the voter backlash to the green eggs and ham will power them to victories in 2014 and 2016, they’re engaging in flailing desperate tactics to make sure nobody tries the green eggs and ham. Because deep down they fear that Dr. Seuss was right.

The GOP doesn’t eat green eggs and ham.

They wont eat green eggs and ham. So the GOP doesn’t want you to eat green eggs and ham because they fear you might actually like it.

So they’re fighting to prevent anyone from eating green eggs and ham.

The GOP’s greatest fear is that once the next set of Obamacare provisions take effect - the exchanges and IM, that people will realize that the GOP is spectacularly wrong - that the program expands health insurance coverage to millions of people and that the costs are reasonable. That’s why they wanted to strangle the program before it gained acceptance - once people realize how valuable the program is, repeal, defunding, delaying, or obstructionism will be even harder to impossible to achieve.

So, instead of offering up constructive criticism on how the program could be modified to make it more cost effective or provide coverage to even more people (or everyone), they’re pushing to eliminate the program altogether - cutting health insurance to millions that would otherwise have access to those who would participate in the exchanges (which are a collection of private insurance companies who provide policies in accordance to the federal rules - which is inherently not a monopoly since it creates a new marketplace for individuals to obtain insurance).

I think they’re afraid that people are going to see the GOP and TP lies for what they are once they realize that ACA is going to benefit and help a lot of people. You can already see that since people oppose the defunding of it in general outside hardcore right wing partisans. The GOP has always acted like opposition was in a vacuum- ignoring that many had a problem with ACA because it wasn’t extensive enough.

Super. This may turn out to be an overreaction (and I hope that’s the case), but a shooting incident was reported at or near Roosevelt Field mall on Long Island (it’s one of the largest malls in the US). It’s prompted lockdowns at nearby schools, road closures, and a significant police response.

Few details are known at this time, but police have closed off all exits to the Meadowbrook Parkway by the mall.

The Garden City School District said classes are going on as normal, but said schools have been placed on a lockout mode, meaning no one is being allowed into school buildings.

With events in Nairobi looming in the background, they’re taking no chances.

UPDATE:
Two people shot, and a suspect apparently fled in a white Honda:

The suspect is described as being an Asian male, 6-feet-2 inches tall and was last seen wearing a grey suit jacket and a red shirt, police said.

The mall was not closed, but they were limiting access.

I’ve been continuing my research into border security issues and I hope to publish a series of pages on it in the not too distant future.

Sadly, most of the information I’ve come across indicates that the people tasked with actually securing the border have no clue what they are doing.

Firstly, the Border Patrol/CBP (Customs and Border Protection) has been responsible for no less than 3 major border security initiatives (ISIS, SBI and Shield) in the past 15 or so year. All have been aject failures with delays, cost overruns and a limited impact on improved security at the border.

And then there’s Project 28.

Project 28 was an offshoot of the SBI initiative. It was meant to be an implementation of the oft-mentioned “virtual fence”. The project would consist of a series of 98 foot towers deployed along the border. The towers are equipped with high definition and infared cameras, sensors and a satellite data connection.

It was supposed to work like this: An illegal immigrant comes with in range of the tower and triggers a sensor, then a remote operator in a command center uses the tower’s camera to locate and get a description of the intruder. This information is then relayed to CBP officers along with GPS information allowing them to quickly intercept and arrest the immigrant.

Sounds good in theory, but the reality it is the program was a disaster.

The U.S. government (specifically the Department of Homeland Security) paid Boeing close to $150 million for the project.

Boeing than took most of that money and pocketed it as profit margin, using the rest to buy commercially available cameras and other equipment from places like Radio Shack and cobbled together a so-called “Border security system” that was practically useless.

It gets better. As part of this “massive, high-tech” undertaking, Boeing hired about 100 subcontractors to also work on the project. In a classic case of “too many cooks spoil the broth”, practically nothing worked in the end.

But here’s the best part: The test area for Project 28 and, as far as I’m aware the only area in which the project was ever actually implemented, was a 28-mile stretch of the Arizona/Mexico border.

That means the U.S. government spent close to $150 million hiring Boeing to spectacularly fail at securing a mere 28 miles of a border nearly SEVENTY TIMES THAT LENGTH.

Why did Project 28 fail?

You can blame the usual suspects: Lack of government oversight, improper conduct by defense contractors and sub-contractors, bureaucratic nonsense and the actions of politicians and bureaucrats who don’t know an actual thing about what it’s like out on the borderlands and fail to understand the immense complexities of developing and implementing a sound border protection strategy.

Obamacare debate part (I’ve lost count).

There was the months of debate leading up to the passage of the law in the House; a similar amount of debate in the Senate with their passage. There was the debate between the chambers.

It was enacted into law.

Then the debate began over the constitutionality of the IM. That debate included countless legal briefs, debates, and judicial decisions leading up to the US Supreme Court holding three days of hearings on the law, and which found the IM was constitutional under the Congressional power to tax.

Yet, there’s still people who think that something will change with more debate and lies and obfuscations from the GOP about the nature of the law and what it will mean to millions of people who currently have no health insurance. They will now have the opportunity to purchase insurance through exchanges, with subsidies to reduce their costs to a percentage of their annual income. It’s not a monopoly. It’s not destroying insurance companies (the exchanges are comprised of plans offered by the insurance companies).

But the GOP thinks that this is a line in the sand and can be used to destroy the national economy by holding it for the ransom of raising the debt ceiling and/or annual appropriations (a continuing resolution).

Give in to their demands to destroy Obamacare, or else the economy gets it.

And everyone should take that message for what it is - the last gasp of a party without any ideas and who thinks that the nation can be fooled by nonstop banter that Obamacare is evil when its central mission is to provide more access to health insurance than presently available.

Sorry, but this org reeks of wingnut. Have you looked at their website? Their YouTube channnel? The Twitter account for the org and its founder? It’s all about #WAR, #2A, #ACP, #NRA, #TGDN and #TCOT

Also, try googling Armed Citizen Project or Kyle Coplen and see who the primary promoters of this are (hint: Daily Caller, Breitbart, Fox, etc.)

Unless I’m missing some links, I don’t see minority outreach in this effort. See my above on demographics. I’ve seen one other neighborhood distro out west—that was a commuter bedroom community.

Wow. In 1950, the ratio of worker to CEO pay was 1-20.

In 1980, it was 1-40.

In 2012, it was 1-350.

If you’re feeling a lot poorer and wondering why you’re not getting ahead or just treading water, think about that. And look at some of the ratios for these CEOs. Is it any wonder that JC Penney is going under?

Wow, I’d totally missed that as I didn’t stay in the thread after posting. I was going by the photos on their YouTube, Twitter, and web pages. They have that one Black woman’s photo displayed prominently on all.
