Video footage from closed-circuit video cameras shows Aaron Alexis, now deceased, at the Washington Navy Yard on September 16, 2013.

The footage includes the following:

- Alexis drives his rental car, a blue Toyota Prius, through the Washington Navy Yard main gate.

- Alexis enters Building #197 carrying a backpack. Alexis had legitimate access to the Washington Navy Yard as a result of his work as a contractor and he utilized a valid pass to gain entry to the building.

- Alexis moves through the hallways and a stairwell of Building #197 carrying a Remington 870 shotgun.

The following timeline details Alexis’ activity during the morning of September 16, 2013:

7:53 a.m. - Alexis’ rental car, a blue Toyota Prius with New York plates, entered Parking Garage #28 at the Washington Navy Yard, located directly across from Building #197.
8:08 a.m. - Alexis exited Parking Garage #28 on foot carrying a backpack. Alexis entered Building #197 and proceeded to the elevator.
8:09 a.m. - Alexis exited the elevator on the fourth floor and entered the men’s bathroom carrying a backpack and a clipboard.
8:15 a.m. - Alexis crossed the hallway into the 4 West area of Building #197 with shotgun, but without the backpack or a clipboard.
8:16 a.m. - Alexis shot the first victim in the 4 West area of Building #197.
8:17 a.m. - First 911 call is received from the fourth floor of Building #197.
8:20 a.m. - Alexis left the fourth floor using the stairs and entered the third floor.
8:28 a.m. - Alexis appeared on the first floor.
8:57 a.m. - Alexis returned to the third floor.
9:25 a.m. - Law enforcement shoot and kill Alexis on the third floor.

Not just any tax cuts, but tax cuts for the rich. They nearly led to a default because they wanted tax cuts for the top 1% of taxpayers. There’s a whole lot of noise about what really happened inside the mall, just how many victims there were, how many attackers involved, and whether/where the hostages that were supposedly rescued are now.

We know that the mall sustained significant damage, including structural collapses. We know there were fires. We know that at least 60+ were killed there. We know that mopping up operations are continuing (as do occasional reports of more gunfire).

There’s a whole lot more that we will learn in coming days and weeks.

My parents keep getting upset any time we let our cats outdoors and one of them chases after something, whether it be a bird, a squirrel, or the local lizard population. Problem Child knows the sound of the Tupperware that the deli-style turkey comes in. When you open it, he comes running.

They all know that the sound of plates being gotten out of the cabinet for wet food.

I’m fairly certain Problem Child knows he’s not supposed to be on the counter, which is why we’ll routinely hear a thump when we’re out of the room followed by him walking out - and sometimes he’ll run past us like he knows he was doing something he would get in trouble for.

I am aware of the controversy over it.

Our kitties are not declawed. There may be a time or two I wish that wasn’t the case, but in general I only get scratched when they are very upset/scared and I am actively in the way of allowing them to run and hide by holding them.

A guard presumably trained for more than 4 hours (as they want teachers and janitors to do) to handle a gun and react to situations like this. So arming the teachers and janitors at schools is pretty much like telling the assassin “Here are a couple more weapons, you’re welcome!”.

Exactly. It’s why neither of my cats is declawed. They’re indoor cats, but if they ever get spooked by something and run out of the house I want them to be able to defend themselves.

Declawing is the equivalent of removing the top joint of each of your fingers. I can’t imagine it.

Depends on the circumstances. If the cat is strictly an indoors animal, I don’t have a problem with a partial declawing (front). But if it’s both an indoor/outdoor cat, then declawing them is cruel as it removes their only real means of defense. Hence leaving the rear claws alone as even a strictly indoor cats can and will eventually get out.

I consider myself very lucky to have a friend who is a vet and willing to provide second opinions/verification that the vet isn’t screwing up for her friends. (She actively will not take friends’ pets as patients.)

A guard presumably trained for more than 4 hours (as they want teachers and janitors to do) to handle a gun and react to situations like this. So arming the teachers and janitors at schools is pretty much like telling the assassin “Here are a couple more weapons, your welcome!”.

Especially when you compare a shotgun with buckshot versus a handgun.

With the former you just point in the general direction, and you have a longish barrel to look down, and you put the other guy at the end of it, and pull the trigger.

Handguns, I discovered when I got one, are surprisingly difficult to shoot as accurately as you’d like, even at the range, with all the time in the world, and are able to take your stance. You can even cock the thing, if it’s double action, and greatly reduce the trigger pressure needed, and STILL you spray bullets.

My best friend is not only in pharmacy school right now but she used to work as a dog groomer and with animals. Not only can I ask her questions about various medications, but if my cats do something weird I can ask her about that too. It’s win-win.

Well, I have you beat. Wanna dog with ONE MEEELION freaking allergies and dietary issues? Sigh. I’ve posted here before about the ongoing saga of finding a food she’ll eat that has no ill effects. Thought we had found one(Rachel Ray brand, I should have known better, but she was eating…)but noooo.

Over the weekend she began losing control of her pee. Or, it’s (ick) vaginal fluid leaking. Either way, not good. It’s not constant, but she’s left a couple of big puddles behind(on the bed, yay, and on the couch), one Sunday, one yesterday. So we go to the vet this morning. I am supposed to follow her around when she goes outside to pee until I get a urine sample (since heaven forbid she’d do it at the vet’s office). That’s gone well, HA, so far my hand has been peed on and nothing went into the container they gave me. Oh goody. This is to determine if she has a UTI. If so, there’s one course of treatment, if not, another, but nothing can start til I get this sample.

But wait! There’s more… She’s also allergic to something in her food most likely. Sooo, it’s back to the food she’d been on her whole life until she turned into a diva about it. Her skin is a flaky mess, she’s got bumps all over herself, irritated ears and an irritated vulva. Yes, vulva. Seriously? Poor dog. She’s a hot mess. She’s the sweetest, most gorgeous dog I’ve ever had(GSD/ Doberman mix, both her parents were purebred from each breed), but lordgodjesushelpmeplease she’s high maintenance.

I’ve had dogs that ate grapes, and dogs that ate chocolate. We didn’t know better. No internet then. Both are toxic to dogs, but neither one is like a cyanide capsule.

The important thing to remember is that anyone who tells you animals won’t eat anything that would be toxic to them is an idiot, and can safely be ignored thereafter.

Here’s a weird-but-true: Daughter’s Basset was left alone in reach of a couple pounds of macadamia nuts. When we got back, he was spread out, totally paralyzed from the ‘waist’ down. Vet Panic. Vet said it was a neuro-poison for them, but would pass. In an hour or so it did ‘pass’, from both ends, by the pound. Dog was walking normally next day.

I’ve been tempted a bit by the emery board scratchers but haven’t tried yet.

Yeah, this isn’t at all amusing. She was a mess when I adopted her as a baby, the only thing she didn’t have was heartworms. She had mange, fleas, 3 different intestinal parasites, diarrhea, vomiting, an ear infection and ear mites, food allergies and she weighed a little over half of what she should have. She had never touched grass until the day I took her home from the shelter. And god help me she stunk that day, so bad I had to ride with the car windows down, in January. It took three baths to get the stench off. But love, lots of $$ and vet visits, and almost 4 yrs later she’s big and gorgeous and has been healthy, until now. I should have just let her go hungry for awhile until she ate what was good for her. If I had to guess, I think the shitty dog food is to blame.

Sigh. (guilt, guilt)

Our Golden was like that. He LOVED going to the Vet. He had a torn ACL when he was 2. We took him to this Veterinary Orthopedic Surgeon in the East Bay. They knocked him out, and he woke up with his leg wrapped up like a Smithfield ham. He had to live in a small pen in the garage (no steps) for 6 weeks, with a newspaper bag over the end of his Smithfield Ham. Went back to the doc, the take off the cast - one side of his ass is shaved, he’s got a scar running nearly the length of his leg. Couldn’t be happier to see the guy!

After about 8 weeks of recovery, he starts limping again. Turns out they’d cut too close to the front of his knee, so that a part broke off, and they had to go in again and screw it down. Once more, they knocked him out, and he woke up with his leg wrapped up like a Smithfield ham. He had to live in a small pen in the garage (no steps) for 6 weeks, with a newspaper bag over the end of his Smithfield Ham. Went back to the doc, they take off the cast - one side of his ass is shaved, he’s got another scar. Couldn’t be happier to see the guy!

After having this happen TWICE, I took him back for his final check up. Couldn’t be happier to see the guy!

That dog was the happiest animal I ever knew.

I wouldn’t blame yourself. You’ve certainly done right by her. You’re probably right as far as making her eat the good stuff. I’ve never had to deal with it, but my understanding is that eventually they’ll cave and eat what’s in the bowl.
