Apart from my dipshit wingnut cousin who I mock here (and challenge on his own posts), I try to keep politics out of my FB page if possible. Not because I’m ashamed of my opinions, but because I primarily use FB as a way to keep up with friends and family.

I’ll post the occasional rant, like I did about the racist jackwagons who bitched about Miss America, or the assholes who got on a young Latino boy’s case for singing at the NBA Finals in a mariachi outfit. And I don’t hide my feelings on things like same-sex marriage, LGBT rights, and my support for Texas Dems like Wendy Davis. But by and large, my political posts are here or on Twitter.

iPhone map app directs drivers on to airport runway

Relying on the iPhone map app’s directions to get to Fairbanks International Airport is downright dangerous.

That’s because the directions take you on a turn-by-turn route to Taxiway Bravo. From there, it’s a direct shot across the main runway to the terminal.

At least twice in the past three weeks, drivers from out of town who followed the directions on their iPhones not only reached airport property, but also crossed the runway and drove to the airport ramp side of the passenger terminal.

“These folks drove past several signs. They even drove past a gate. None of that cued them that they did something inappropriate,” said Melissa Osborn, chief of operations at the Fairbanks airport.

With or without salt? Takes longer to boil salt than water, so it slows the whole process (but tastes better).

re: #67 wrenchwench

Without, because I am lazy. It also raises the boiling temperature of the water slightly - you can think of it like the salt ions are interfering with the escape route of the water molecules and so more energy is needed for them to break free at the appropriate rate for ‘boiling’ (which is really just the point where the vapor pressure of the liquid equals atmospheric pressure, which is why water boils at a lower temperature at higher elevations).

(Boiling salt would be impressive.)

Doggie update: no UTI, no crystals in the urine, low pH, so it appears her issues are allergy related. I go in the morning to pick up a low dose of prednisone and a prescription shampoo to alleviate the itching and various inflamations. No chicken, no wheat, corn soy, beef and for now, lamb, fish only, grain free food, watch all treats. Doesn’t leave many choices. Although barley and oats are ok, which widens the choices a little.

Heh. In addition to all this, my husband’s type 2 diabetes is out of control and he’s on a special diet, eating schedule and he’s back to blood testing again. It’s his own fault, he hasn’t taken care of himself for years. If he doesn’t do it this time, he’s going to end up dead or really sick. I told him that if he loses a foot or goes blind, I’m loading his ass in the car and taking him to FL to live with his Mommy. I’ll spare you the tale of how many times I’ve been through this with him, he’s had THREE heart attacks and angioplasties, a total of 5 stents in his heart. And that still didn’t make him wake up. He’s got no choice now. This could have been under control, maybe even by diet only by now, but noooo.

A Scottish friend once offered me a drink at his place. He had two bottles of whisky (that’s right, no ‘e’), Glenmorangie Single Malt, and Bell’s blended. I could have the Glenmorangie if I took it neat, or with tepid water. Otherwise, it was Bells.

I spent three days at The Anderson hotel in Fortrose, Black Isle, Scotland.
They have an amazing Whiskey Bar, where I managed to spend many pleasant hours working my way through their more than 240 offerings of single malts.
I needed more time…

Glad to hear the dog is okay. As for hubby: I’m going through something similar with my dad regarding diabetes. Passed out in a parking lot from low blood sugar; he was literally seconds away from passing out behind the wheel, and possibly killing himself and others in the process. Instead of learning from the incident, he proceeded to ignore his health.

Maybe an intervention? We finally ganged up on Dad and did something along those lines. Seems to have worked to a degree.

I don’t see pork on the list for the dog. Guessing not, but if the vet didn’t say, check as it’s usually less expensive than fish. Usually.

Ask vet what fats are allowed. If he tells you ‘none’ it’s time to talk to another vet, but I digress. I’m going to assume that at least initially he’s going to want you to stick to fish oils, maybe olive oil. Butter would work though it’s expensive. Ask him to check for eggs as early in the sequence as possible. There’s a method to this madness, bear with me.

If you don’t have one (I’m guessing you do, but have learned about assumptions) get a sausage grinder. Make oat, barley, and meat (fish for now) sausages, and use an approved fat for a binder. Use the coarsest wheel, and as soon as approved use casings - until then just make the grindings.

See, the big thing about this method is that you can simultaneously control the mix and make pre-measured serving sizes. And since it looks like sausage it tricks (many) dogs into thinking it’s people food.

The ‘great touch’ to finish - again once eggs and an oil are approved - is to make homemade mayonnaise to go with it. One egg and a cup of oil will give you two to three cups of mayo, meaning you can ‘season’ the sausage with a tablespoon of mayo and only be adding a teaspoon or two of oil - but again making the dog feel ‘special’. Homemade mayo will last about a week so you’ll learn how much to give so you don’t have to throw it away.

As to the husband, I think I’ll leave that one alone. Not least because we’ve got a similar situation here and I’ve not yet resolved how I feel about it.

The class is required from the point of view of the certificate which I want, which will give me a piece of paper to wave at HR and hopefully get to the interview point (at which point it is on me). Discussion with my husband says that although rarely used, it is probably good to see it once.

This is discrete mathematics, which isn’t typically what’s required for a science degree (where yes, I’ve gone far beyond what might be required here - through differential equations).

As in reduce to two minimally sustaining elements and wait to see if symptoms continue. if they do, substitute X for A (Rice for Oats, for example) and continue. yes, brown/long grain/wild rice. We have none of that horrid sticky tasteless white rice in the Sleuth kitchen.

meh. I use that ‘sticky tasteless white rice’ a lot. It’s a great ‘no-fail’ sushi rice, for example, because of that sticky property.

The thing for me is to treat white rice the same way I treat grits or polenta or tofu: it’s a base, and its only use alone should be for the ill and weak-stomached.

Apparently there are subtleties and nuances to white rice that we just don’t get in this country. Or at least, they elude me.

Fats are allowed, just not chicken or beef fat, I asked because her skin is so dry it’s insane. She’s black and tan and the flaking is so bad she looks like she’s got snowflakes all over her. Ack. She can have brown rice in moderation, vet wants limited grains including the barley and oats. So, we’re going with either Blue Buffalo Wilderness Salmon (grain free)or Blue Buffalo Basics Salmon and Potato(limited ingredient diet (which is what she was eating her whole life before all hell broke loose and she refused to eat anything but the Rachael Ray crap) to start and see if that works. If not, then we go to the whole elimination diet thing with me cooking everything which I am trying to avoid because I’m already dealing with The Husband’s dietary issues. I did that with the kid when he was little to rule out gluten and dairy allergies(common in autistic kids for some reason). The vet seems to think that the prednisone and a few dietary improvements should relieve the symptoms within a couple of weeks. We shall see.

If I don’t start drinking heavily before this is all resolved it’s going to be a miracle.

Is Newt Gingrich breaking CNN’s rules?
By HADAS GOLD | 9/25/13 5:38 PM EDT

Just weeks into his new role, CNN Crossfire host Newt Gingrich has already broken some ethical rules set forth by the network’s executive vice president of standards and practices, according to a new report from Media Matters For America, the liberal watchdog group.

CNN EVP for standards and practices Rick Davis told Media Matters in early September that Gingrich would be required to disclose if he or a PAC he is connected to is donating to a candidate who appeared or was discussed on the show.

“If Newt is helping fund a candidate and that candidate’s on the show, or being discussed on the show, of course he’ll disclose that,” Davis said. “Disclosure is important when it’s relevant.”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has been a guest on Crossfire and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has been a topic on the show. Mother Jones reports that Gingrich’s PAC has donated to both Senators recently, and that Gingrich didn’t make note of the donations in either episode.

Requests for comment to CNN were not returned.

This really pisses me off, considering that Apple and other large companies use Ireland as a tax dodge to avoid paying taxes to the US.

IMF approves next $1 billion for Ireland bailout program

cnbc.com

“WASHINGTON, Sept 25 (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund disbursed the next $1 billion aid tranche to Ireland on Wednesday, as the European island nation remains on track with the conditions of its loan program.

“The IMF is one of a trio of lenders overseeing Dublin’s 85 billion euro ($115 billion) bailout, necessary after its biggest banks collapsed in 2010. The IMF’s portion of the program is about $30 billion.

“Ireland is set to become the first euro zone country to exit an EU/IMF bailout in December after returning to debt markets, but its economy still needs to start growing by more than 2 percent per annum from next year on to help make its national debt sustainable.”

I suppose the bankers and corps take care of each other and the hell with the rest of us.

191 lawhawk  Wed, Sep 25, 2013 3:21:11pm

I really don’t know what to make of this. There are apparently issues at Fort Hood involving at least one soldier going off base with an AR-15 and engaging in confrontations with police. Michael Yon is the one reporting this, and he’s singling out one soldier in particular with whom he has a history. And it also involves a charity, Soldiers Angels.

Soldiers can face discipline for open carry of their weapons without showing their military ID.

Once again, it looks like there are serious problems at Fort Hood and the superior officers aren’t doing a particularly good job in dealing with discipline issues, potential mental health issues, and soldiers who think that they are above the law.

The policy comes after recent incidents in which soldiers openly carrying long guns were asked by police to show identification and they refused.

“The purpose of this policy is to assist law enforcement personnel in determining whether a service member constitutes a threat to the public safety, without confrontation, in order to protect service members and civilians from avoidable accidents or incidents that could result in death or serious injury,” the memo states.

Although open carry of handguns in Texas is banned, it is legal to openly carry long guns, such as rifles, carbines or shotguns.

The memo cites as the basis for the Fort Hood policy “a growing trend of soldiers assigned to Fort Hood openly carrying firearms in private business establishments in the greater local area in an attempt to publicly assert their Second Amendment right.”

Asking for ID is a way to deter soldiers from exercising their legal right to carry their weapons, said Robert Sneed, a spokesman with Open Carry Texas, which is protesting the new policy.

“The policy change effectively forces active-duty personnel to provide identification under any and all circumstances,” Sneed said. Soldiers who openly carry are being profiled by police, who ask for their ID and then call the soldier’s command, he said.

I tend to trust Yon, and we know that Fort Hood has had issues in the past, but something smells here. I just can’t put my finger on which parts.

- believing that gay people are moral degenerates conspiring to take over the country.
- believing some people should just die because they’re life undeserving of life (and can’t afford care)
- talking about how certain types of people don’t deserve civil liberties because of group blame
- talking about how unions are all socialist and need to be busted up
- education re-cast as an ideological struggle in which revisionist history and propaganda are necessary tools to form a new generation of “politcally correct” youth (in the original, terrifying sense of the term, not the *I’m a whiny gutless coward that wants to say ugly things but also hide behind a sense of vindication*)

There’s a couple oversights in the article—it doesn’t seem to grasp that the policy is to show ID to law enforcement whether you are armed or not, and it should mention that the long guns, certainly the AR15s, are privately-owned.

I don’t suppose Ted Cruz will be mentioning any of this in his speechifying on the Senate floor tonight. But it’s worth taking a look at those numbers. After tax credits, that family of four in Texas will pay $3,384 per year for the second-lowest-cost silver plan. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average family with employer health coverage pays $4,565 per year in contributions. Those aren’t directly comparable, but they’re close. What it means is that although Obamacare is hardly free, it does allow individuals to buy coverage for roughly the same amount they’d have to pay with an employer plan. No one is shut out of the market any longer.

I won’t lie, having your health insurance tied to a job SUCKS ASS because of reasons. In our situation, they changed what plan was available to us this year (so our insurance changed in January) and then announced the sale of his unit to another company in April. Which means …different insurance, YET AGAIN. And the tax code implications of the one we had from January to September (or rather, don’t have from October to December…) are a mess.

I’m grateful we have any at all, but that doesn’t mean I think this is a great system.

What is lovingly called “Obamacare” was a bit of a bastard child, being conceived by the far right but abandoned at birth, adopted by a then-conveniently-compromising Mitt Romney, and finally re-born as an attempt by congressional Democrats to find a compromise that didn’t happen but was still passed and made law because the newly President Obama would play ball with then speaker Nancy Pelosi.

No, this is not the way someone would design a system from scratch.

It used to be extremely simple, just transfer the funds, but ACA f’d that up.

Maybe you are thinking of FSAs?

HSAs have some very nice tax implications (money goes in pre-tax, comes out taxfree as long as used for medical expenses or are over 65) and can be invested (which we did) to produce additional growth.

On the other hand, if some money was put in in excess of the contribution limit (which we managed to hit because of insurance changes driven by the employer), then it needs to be withdrawn, along with any income associated with it, and taxed.

Hence the headache.

Part of that is a combination of shifting dilation and latency in brain processing. Each time you switch eyes you’re going from a constricted pupil to a dilated one. Also the human brain processes colors in context of the surrounding palate.

I can’t find it now but there’s used to be a good online image that demonstrated this. If you dragged a black mask over a certain mosaic image the perceived color of a swatch that matched the cut out in the mask would shift noticeably.

NC is like that too. If you can’t qualify for Medicaid, say you’re 1 person and make only $10K a year, depending on the income limit for Medicaid in your state, you have to pay 1/4 of your annual salary for health care for the silver plan (I looked it up in a previous thread). It’s really going to create a “pocket” of the working poor that won’t have any coverage in states like NC & AL. Having to pay it would break them.

Hacker ‘mercenaries’ linked to Japan, South Korea spying: researchers

A small, sophisticated international hacking group was responsible for a widely publicized 2011 spying attack on members of Japan’s parliament as well as dozens of previously undisclosed breaches at government agencies and strategic companies in Japan and South Korea, security researchers said.

Researchers at Kaspersky Lab believe they have found a squad of hackers for hire, who contract out to governments and possibly businesses, in contrast to recent reports on hacks said to be carried out by full-time government employees.

“What we have here is the emergence of small groups of cyber-mercenaries available to perform targeted attacks,” said Kaspersky’s global research director, Costin Raiu, in an interview with Reuters.

That’s not really the ACA’s fault though.

The biggest headache so far has been my inability to find the information from the company handling the account about how to withdraw the excess (and it’s not in my name so I can’t call and ask) and the fact that the IRS can’t hyperlink forms, apparently.

They sent us a debit card that we could use for it (which we were intending to use it as a retirement savings account, so, whatever) and you have to keep track of receipts but for anything where it’s tax free, you’d have to do that.

So, are we going to start testing athletes for DNA like we do for alleged “drugs”?

Do elite ‘power sport’ athletes have a genetic advantage?

A specific gene variant is more frequent among elite athletes in power sports, reports a study in the October issue of The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, official research journal of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health.

A “functional polymorphism” of the angiotensiogen (AGT) gene is two to three times more common in elite power athletes, compared to nonathletes or even elite endurance athletes, according to the new research by Paweł Cięszczyk, PhD, of University of Szczecin, Poland, and colleagues. They write, “[T]he M23T variant in the AGT may be one of the genetic markers to investigate when an assessment of predisposition to power sports is made.”

Here’s another set of color perception illusions. Some of the shifts are so extreme that you’ll probably refuse to believe they aren’t hoaxes until you cut out your own physical masks and lay them over the screen.

re: #305 Bubblehead II

Want to know what is really sad? I had two orders that were scheduled to be delivered by the USPS today. They showed up yesterday. Collaboration with DHAL and the USPS. Brown isn’t doing much by me.

After an issue with the USPS when I moved out to CA for grad school and trying to get an insurance claim processed for items damaged or lost in transit (when the box is in pieces, some of my stuff is missing and there is stuff in the box that wasn’t mine - and I had an itemized list of the box contents that I was requesting reimbursement for, which was not the full amount the box was insured for, it shouldn’t take 6+ months and a phone call to DC), I refuse to use them unless it’s priority mail flat rate.

I know my local UPS guy pretty well - he does commercial deliveries in the morning, and then there’s a window in the afternoon for residential before they have to do commercial pickups. Sometimes he makes it by me then, but otherwise it’s after the commercial pickups are done.

It’s just not possible for popular media outlets to accurately communicate highly complex issues:

U.N. climate change panel to release summary of latest science Friday

With a new groundbreaking study on climate change seemingly coming out every other week, it can be hard to keep up with the latest findings.

Fortunately, every five to six years, the United Nations sums it up in a comprehensive report.
That’s what’s going on this week in the Swedish capital Stockholm, where the latest Assessment Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is set for release on Friday. The document will bring together the latest research from top scientists around the field.

[…]

Um, no.

Indeed, one of the legitimate complaints (versus the manufactured outrage) about the IPCC is that the IPCC by the nature of their process lags the scientific literature by over a year, maybe two years.

By nature the IPCC is very conservative and behind the cutting edge. The IPCC’s goal is not to be cutting edge in science, but to communicate the important discoveries to governments.

Most time I get my UPS deliveries around 10 a.m. But sometimes it’s around this time of night (7-8 pm) and it’s my driver’s last delivery of the night. And he’s been working since 5 a.m.
I like my UPS guy. When there’s a sub it’s a nightmare.

Know how a sub goes. When the regular routr driver is off, E-9 suddenly becomes B-9 and I get a visit from the individual who lives at that address delivering a misdelivered package. It has happened twice so far.

Thankfully. the Gentleman is honest. I gave him our phone number so that if it happens again, he can call us and I will go and pick it up instead of him having to bring it over.

Calls to the local UPS office were, shall we say, not productive.

Those are changes via ACA . I used to be able to move funds around at will between accounts. Now I too have a Debit card. Only qualifying institutions can take the $. My own checking account is no longer qualified to take $ from my own HSA. If I over contribute as you did or I just change my mind about what I want to contribute in a given year you’re f’d (as you now know).

PS Be especially careful about contributions made between Jan 1 and tax day. That now really messes things up.

AFP goes Dudebro:

Revealed: NSA spied on Martin Luther King and senators opposed to Vietnam War

The National Security Agency eavesdropped on civil rights icon Martin Luther King and heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali as well as other leading critics of the Vietnam War in a secret program later deemed “disreputable,” declassified documents revealed Wednesday.

The six-year spying program, dubbed “Minaret,” had been exposed in the 1970s but the targets of the surveillance had been kept secret until now.

[…]

The agency carried out warrantless wiretapping between 2001-2004 and recent revelations from US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden have exposed far-reaching electronic surveillance of phone records and Internet traffic.

[…]

The AFP writer just propagates the idea that Snowden is a great revelator.

Sure enough, the first commenters at Raw Story jump on the bandwagon:

OldCrank VAGINA!!! • 2 minutes ago −
“The researchers who published the documents Wednesday said the spying
abuses during the Vietnam War era far surpass the excesses of the
current program.”

Since the excesses of the current program are only now being revealed (thank you, Edward Snowden), I’d say the statement above is just an eensy-weensy bit premature.

It has now become lodged into the group mindset of the anarcho-libertarians that Edward Snowden is a hero and that we’re all being much more victimized by the NSA than we can ever imagine.

Those are contract drivers (the subs). A friend of mine has been working for the second time as one, and she hates it. Her route is 50 mi long w/700 boxes. She only runs it 1 day a week, and has since late spring. She tried to transfer out to a closer p.o. with better routes (which she worked at previously), but doesn’t have her “90 days” accumulated (which would only add up after the first of next year. The woman she subs for has “owned” that route for 20 yrs and doesn’t want it changed or shortened to a more manageable route, a big problem. My friend had problems w/young kids coming close to her vehicle, delaying the deliveries, because the reg person was giving the kids candy and they were out there every day, not to mention the various boxes that weren’t “regulation”.

So she’s quitting, effective in Oct.

Over all, I’ve had the best luck with USPS. Unfortunately there are some things I buy (ammo, C&R firearms, etc) that have to go by FedEx or UPS. UPS usually gets the nod as they’re cheaper and the shipping hub (which has to be used for either) is only an hour’s drive rather than an hour & a half.

But what angers me usually the most is when, by federal law they have to have an adult signature on a parcel (80 year old military bolt action rifle for example) gets the dump & run on the front steps. Considering the neighborhood at the time, I’m lucky it’s in my safe right now. Both FedEx & UPS have pulled that on me.

For some stuff I’ve used my work address since I get along with the mail room folk and a package will get signed for. The current apartment staff is pretty good about handling packages since a bunch arrive at once and they keep them, put a notice in the mailbox, and wait for the tenants to sign for them.

I’ve had issues with USPS, FedEx, and UPS at times - especially when dealing with fragiles (bottles/jars of hot sauce), delivery receipts, and bad addresses. They’ve all failed at one time or another regarding these issues.

“The measure introduced by Democrats Ron Wyden, Mark Udall and Richard Blumenthal, and Republican Rand Paul, is one of several efforts making their way through Congress to rein in sweeping surveillance programs.

“The Senate Intelligence Committee is holding a public hearing on Thursday when the panel’s leaders are expected to discuss their surveillance reforms, the Senate Judiciary Committee is addressing the issue and several members of the House of Representatives have also introduced legislation.

“The strong support for the amendment - bolstered by an unlikely alliance of liberal Democrats and libertarian Republicans - surprised many congressional observers because House leaders and members of the Intelligence Committee had strongly opposed it.”

Friday is the drop date for the latest IPCC assessment report and of course the “news” stories are flowing freely and will be even more so in 48 hours.

Here is the reality of politics that involve climate change:

Labor groups weigh in favoring Army Corps’ narrower environmental review of Wash coal export proposals

Spokesmen for three national labor groups sounded off Wednesday against the state Department of Ecology’s plan to subject the Gateway Pacific coal-export proposal at Cherry Point to a more stringent environmental review than the Army Corps of Engineers plans. The Army Corps announced earlier this month it was doing a more site specific review after previously announcing in July it would work jointly with Ecology effort.

Ecology announced its decision in late July after getting about 125,000 comments from the public over a 121-day period. The agency plans to look at the cumulative impacts of rail traffic bringing coal by rail from the Powder River Basin of Montana and Wyoming to serve the export docks proposed by SSA Marine. In a move that appears to be a first nationally, Ecology also is planning to consider the greenhouse gas effects of burning the coal in China, India and other potential markets.

[…]

In a repeat of industry and labor’s past arguments, Risch explained the reason for supporting the projects. The biggest is that “expanded ports and trade means expanded economic opportunities” for ports and other communities. Although Gateway Pacific is primarily meant to ship millions of tons of coal a year, Risch said improved infrastructure also will “make our west coast ports more competitive’’ for exports of agricultural products, commodities, potash and coal.

[…]

Coal = jobs.

That’s the only equation that matters.

re: #280 goddamnedfrank

Part of that is a combination of shifting dilation and latency in brain processing. Each time you switch eyes you’re going from a constricted pupil to a dilated one. Also the human brain processes colors in context of the surrounding palate.

I can’t find it now but there’s used to be a good online image that demonstrated this. If you dragged a black mask over a certain mosaic image the perceived color of a swatch that matched the cut out in the mask would shift noticeably.

Also I was told that if you’re lying on your side the lower eye sees more red than the upper (something to do with blood flow IIRC) - seemed unlikely, but it works with me

It wasn’t that easy. As gdfrank pointed out, the colors’ hue seem to shift depending on the surrounding colors.

In preparation for art journaling I’ve been doing some color mixing lately, so I happen to be really aware of hue at present. It’s fascinating and often surprising what happens when you mix certain colors.

It also matters a lot when you’re getting something printed in a 4 (or more) color process too—a 5% shift in the saturation of a color may or may not be a huge deal, depending on the hue. That’s something I imagine you’re very much aware of when printing your photographs.

Platinum crucible. It is very close to the flow point, but it’s also pushing that furnace to get to that temp, so I don’t worry about it going over. When it’s pulled out, though, the wire holding it to the hook has stretched into a triangle, as opposed to a hoop.

We never did get the 1800 deg furnace set up while I was there, but that was ok, because 1700 was the top of what I needed. I very rarely had corundum show up in samples (when making a glass, this is bad - want no crystals at all), generally because I was pushing the aluminum content too far. Of course, the more aluminum you have, the higher the melting point (hence the high temperatures).

This is the relating-to-the-rest-of-my-life reason why my engagement/wedding rings are platinum with sapphire (and a few small diamonds).

Platinum is really useful because it has little to no interaction with a wide range of materials, even at high temperatures. That makes it much easier to understand what reactions are going on, because you can normally rule out some interaction between the platinum and whatever you’re using.

Also, it’s much easier to get glass out of a platinum crucible than a ceramic one.

The downside, of course, is that platinum is expensive. Not as expensive as some other components, but I have had experiments use between $200-$600 worth of platinum for a single sample. (Fortunately that was one or two very specialized ones. Most of the time I could just reuse the crucible.)

Glassy metal is awesome stuff. But I can understand why you might not want it.

I think we had a Pt/Rh crucible floating around in lab to go with the 1800deg furnace but since it never got set up I never used it. More fun was the fast quench furnace, where your sample was suspended in a thin platinum foil packet on two platinum wires between supports. At temperature, you activate two pneumatics that smash together and then pull out of the furnace, with your packet trapped between the two heads (one was attached magnetically).

Then you get to wait 24 hours for the damn furnace to cool down so you can see if it worked or if you curse the world and try again.

445 klys  Wed, Sep 25, 2013 6:58:59pm

re: #442 CuriousLurker

Now it makes more sense. Thanks!

Oh, and the flow point is the point where the metal starts to lose structural strength even before it melts. Obviously you don’t want to actually *doing* something at this point, because you might lose your experiment since the platinum wire oozes off the hook or something along those lines.

In general, white light being emitted indicates you’re close to if not above 1500 degrees Celsius. Most gold melts before then. :)

I think Frank has a good point. I even think Clarence Thomas, incredibly weirdo that he is, might on this point rule that any bill passed by congress that set a debt limit was unconstitutional. He’s a weirdo, but when stuff is really clear in the constitution— and it’s very clear that US debts must be paid— I think he might rule the right way.

But anyway, I really doubt that Roberts wants his legacy to be “crushed America’s economy and put the US into default”.

We don’t have a good cooler on there. :( I guess maybe it’s more like 12 - you’d set up the experiment either the night before or in the morning, depending on how late I wanted to stay at work, and then it takes almost 5 hours to get to temperature. Pressurize, flip the switches, and then go home. Break it all down in the morning.

I’ve become rather cynical these days when it comes to the ODS crowd. The Supremes may very well rule the debt limit unconstitutional, but then where would that leave us? Prior to the institution of it, Congress took care of these things as part of the annual budget. In the present situation, that’s not gonna happen. So would we effectively be giving the executive power of how much debt America can carry at any one time?

I’m saying that we should never assume that these fuckers are sane enough to realize the consequences of their actions.

Who are “these fuckers?” You seem to want to conflate the tea baggers with establishment, big business conservatives like Roberts, Kennedy, Alito, even Scalia. In this matter their interests are completely and utterly antagonistic. It makes no sense to lump those justices in with the anarchistic wing of the Tea Party on US default, no sense whatsoever.

Pt/Rh crucible? That’s impressive. Cool tools are wonderful.

Ah, okay. I figured flow point had something to do with melting, but it’s right before. Cool. Thanks. I feel smarter now.

Hahaha, cool would have been the other end of the spectrum, when I was doing the liquid nitrogen fills on the magnet. Or helping with the liquid helium fills.

I tend to think of the other section of the lab as the hot one.

Once you work at those temperatures, taking stuff out of the oven at 400 F is a whole lot easier. (But 800 deg C is still too much for the short tongs without gloves, and with gloves I tended to knock things over. :()

I’ve always wondered what the electricity bills are like for sculptors who fire ceramics or people who work with fused glass & such. It can’t be cheap.

I’ve had the chance to talk with a number of folks who work with blowing glass. It is definitely not cheap.

Hell, I’ve taken apart the inside of one of the furnaces at the lab (we were installing a new controller) and the width of the power lines is …impressive. And scary. You always triple checked that. Seeing the damn thing arcing one morning was good grounds for a heart attack.

Good friend of my wife is a major name in ceramic art and, especially, Japanese style porcelains. His firing is all wood; it’s a hallmark of his art now but he started that way because he could cut wood even when he couldn’t afford gas.

It’s gotta be a sort of an art in itself to get wood to burn hot enough to fire ceramics, no?

During one of my summer research internships in undergrad, we went and toured one of the Alcoa aluminum recycling facilities (which was really neat). The pools of molten aluminum were amazing.

Of course, the just-cast stuff was terrifying because it’s close to 600 deg C and yet it looks normal (except for the heat mirage). VERY EASY to get yourself badly hurt. I have a cast-sample paperweight somewhere from them.

At Corning, they had a room where melt dripped down through the ceiling into water to form glass. That was also kickass. (And a small fusion draw system, also really cool. And fiber draw towers, but those weren’t in action when we went.)

I collect art glass as a hobby (mostly paperweights) and have gotten to some some very guided glass blowing and lampworking.

It’s cool watching him get it going and also to watch him mix up the slips - the “paint” for lack of a better word - that need the heat even more than the clay to set onto the ceramic and give a smooth leak free surface.

That was my reaction too.

Fortunately, the building didn’t burn down and it only melted a little bit of the plastic tubing for water above it but not enough to leak onto the furnace (since there’s cooling water into the top/bottom aluminum blocks to keep the rubber o-rings from melting - the joys of needing to work in a controlled environment).

Yes? Congress spends the money. It seems to me common sense that, in spending the money, they authorize borrowing money if they don’t allocate enough in a budget. I mean, the only thing this takes away is the power of congress to put us into default. The president doesn’t gain the power to do anything but pay congresses’ debts.

Sounds really cool! I love art glass, but don’t collect it as I’m a terrible klutz. I hope to get to visit one of the glass museums someday—maybe Corning since it’s probably the closest. Lucky you on the glass blowing and lampworking!

Upon further review, it seems that there’s strong support for the idea of abolishing the debt ceiling. At this point, with reforms that have been made since its creation, there’s little point to maintaining it besides to give the minority party the opportunity to extort ideological concessions.

I HIGHLY recommend the Corning museum - they have a lot of interesting exhibits on the technological side of things, as well as a really nice historical section. They also have glassworking experiences that are quite reasonably priced - that’s where I did my lampworking (and fusion and sandblasting - only the glassblowing was elsewhere).

Very easy to spend a whole day there!

I lived there for a summer.

Well, not in the museum, in the hotel about a block and a half away. One of those extended stay type places.

I spent more than one afternoon at the museum. :)

In a few weeks I will have the HD video of the purple gold melt (torch and induction heat) finished and out. I was able to put a GoPro cam staring right through the quartz glass into the melt of the aluminum and gold. I have really sharp footage of the aluminum failing to blend with 24kt. We stopped the exposure down so far as for the molten/pasty/oxide metal to be clearly visible at 1200C.

I must be a “well adjusted” pyro or something.
