I think my favorite crazy line was that Harry Reid wants to use “brute political force” to fund the Affordable Care Act — a law that was passed years ago — or maybe it was Cruz’s idiotic, heartless advice to people who need health insurance: “get a job.”

These people are so deranged, it’s truly disturbing.

People like me who always thought the Tea Party was a some what a lame movement consisting mostly of old people pissed off about taxes, Obama and the GOP losing power. I played down the fringe elements.

I am becoming deeply alarmed over these self styled revolutionaries.
America.. Mr. Cruz is the fruit of the Tea Party.
What have they wrought on this Nation?
The shut down of the Government is only the opening act for this bunch.
They don’t want to legislate, they want to burn the Hill down and remake it to their image of America in the 50’s and 60’s.

I have always been taken aback seeing the cost of health insurance in the US for self-employed people, who lack the negotiating power of big corporations. In many cases, it makes health care simply unaffordable to independent entrepreneurs… But then, wasn’t the Republican party supposed to be all about “free enterprise”?

In effect, the current obstacle is an obstacle to free enterprise - and an incentive for middle-class people to stick with salaried job and corporate exploitation… If the Republicans were serious about “freedom of enterprise”, they would welcome the ACA with glee…

The thing is this law was passed. It was debated, it has survived numerous repeal attempts, and the Supreme Court, headed by a man who many in Cruz’s party have claimed should be a judicial role model affirmed its constitutionality. You don’t get to threaten to shut down the government because you don’t like legislation. For example, I thought the Bush tax cuts while simultaneously fighting two wars was a stupid and wrongheaded policy, would it have been right for the Dems in the House to threaten shutdown over that? And please spare me the hyperbole about government power when this very same party proposed what we call today Obamacare as an alternative to the Clinton’s proposals in the 90’s and even Barack Obama’s opponent had exacted in Massachusetts. And this is also the party that wants to use the government to guilt trip women who want to get a legal procedure, abortion so I don’t want to hear it from them about big government when they’re perfectly happy to use it when they have an agenda.

In addition, many conservatives indignantly point out that the United States has the best medical care available anywhere in the world. This may or may not be true, but it totally misses the point.

If people are denied or cannot afford to pay for health insurance coverage, let alone their own (or their children’s) preventative care or chronic illness medical treatments, then as far as medical care availability is concerned, there’s no there there.

This doofus doesn’t get it. My husband has a job, his employer pays for HIS insurance, not mine, not our son’s. It’s around 160 a month just for The Husband, add me, it jumps to 415 a month. Add our son and it doubles again. Fucked up thing, if I had 6 kids, it costs the same as one. So, we put me on the Husband’s insurance and bought a stand alone policy for the kid. That saves us about 300 a month, but this is killing us. And I doubt I can get off his insurance and go on the exchange and I’m not sure the kid will be allowed to because the Husband’s work offers it. As it is, we’re forking out 250 bucks a paycheck just for insurance, when you’re only bringing home around 1500 a paycheck, that’s a big chunk of change. If I was bringing in 175K(and this ain’t his only income, I’d bet money on that-most congresscritters come from other more lucrative careers) a year I probably wouldn’t be worried about the cost either, but damn, what a DICK thing to say to people. People ARE working you bloated sac of protoplasm, they just aren’t being PAID for an honest day’s work.

I wonder if these assholes are pissed because they have to go on the same insurance exchanges as everyone else now? Which makes their healthcare less “special” or something.

So do you have any plans to actually make health care you know easier to afford and more accessible or are you just going to bitch at us because we have the gall to think that Ted Cruz isn’t the greatest thing of senatorial sliced bread. ACA isn’t ideal legislation but I see no real alternatives being offered by the Republicans to it. They’d rather return to the status quo where it’s okay for insurers to deny people coverage based on conditions they have no control over. Yeah I missed the whole President signing the bill into law thing. I even remember the president’s party going from controlling the House to losing it. And a whole Supreme Court case. Listen, we had the debate over it and despite the right wing hypocrisy/hysteria over the issue, we had it and it was for the best but it’s been passed, the president has signed it in to law, John Roberts and four other members of the USSC affirmed its constitutionality, and despite what the TP caucus in the House thinks, President Obama nor the senate isn’t going to repeal it. None of this is free, it’s being administered by INSURANCE COMPANIES. You have to pay premiums,it’s just that they’ll have to be competitive and offer more for your money and the premiums aren’t going to be the massive cost they are now. Competition should lower prices across the board as more time passes and more people get into the pool. How is that so hard to understand? And how in the hell did we get to the place where having as many people as possible insured become some evildemondevilomgweareallgoingtodie nightmare?

I start my new job in another state in November, and I’m waiting on my checks so I can put a down payment on an apartment. If I don’t receive that money, I can’t move, so I can’t start my new job. I can only imagine the dread that people who receive medical care and other services are feeling right now. This is so much goddamn bullshit over legislation that will ensure that tens of millions of Americans can receive affordable health care.

As a fellow Texan, I would LOVE to get a job, as I’ve been out of work for the better part of four YEARS now, as a result of the economy crash.
The only reason I’m not homeless today, and avoided crippling debt is due to the fact that I had a significant amount of savings put back over the past fifteen years-plus of employment, which unfortunately is now completely depleted.
The worst part? I’m stuck when it comes to job prospects - because of the gap on my resume’, employers who are hiring at my skill level want recent experience, and entry-level work (that I would have to take a 40%-plus pay cut on) all say that I’m far too overqualified for consideration. It’s not due to a lack of effort on my part either - in the last month alone, I have filed applications with at least two dozen companies and staffing agencies. For my efforts I’ve gotten two return phone calls and one interview in the past four months’ time.

Because I’m a single male, over 40 but under 55, with no dependents, I don’t qualify for any state-level aid - even emergency rent assistance isn’t available - because to receive aid in Texas, you have to show proof of employment to qualify (in yet another case of catch-22).

Yeah. “Get a job”.

I know plenty of people with jobs but not insurance, or shitty insurance that makes you think “what’s the point”.
I am lucky my husband has great benefits. Although he’s a Ranger combat Vet with full medical coverage, he decided to take a job with the Federal government for lower pay than another job he was offered, but much better benefits, so I could be covered well. It was very hard for him to get this job.

My job, on the other hand, has what many here (Texas) think of as good health coverage. Let’s put it this way, I could not afford to get sick under my insurance.

I can name a lot of powers that were given to the govenment that were given back. Like, there’s no draft on. You can say that a draft could come into play, so that power hasn’t been taken back, but functionally, it has. The power of the government to say that some people of different races were less equal and had fewer rights, that got taken back. That was a new power— race-based legislation was an invention.

So here’s a question for the masses:

Do you think it’s possible that once the healthcare exchanges are up and running that prices overall will come down for employer based plans too? I’m still trying to figure out what’s going to happen in our family since The Husband’s new employer(since June) has made it so expensive to put anyone but him on the plan. But since the employer offers it, we can’t do the exchanges. My understanding is that you can opt out if 2 conditions are met, the premiums are more than 9.5 percent of your income AND (not or) they cover less than 60 percent of your costs when you make a claim. We’re yes on the first, no on the second.

Aetna and some smaller company they bought out (Coventry health or something like that) have opted out of GA’s exchanges which sounds kind of dumb to me, unless they are allowed to jack up the rates outside the exchanges. Otherwise why would you turn away thousands of new customers? I hope this all gets ironed out by the end of enrollment in the spring. I guess by then we’ll know what the real problems are not the made up ones. Hopefully the fixes aren’t that hard to implement.

I will admit to be nervous about what we’ll have to pay for our Kaiser plan this coming year. It is already extortionate, and we’re moving up into a new age bracket this year. Now we could presumably find cheaper insurance on the exchanges, but that would mean finding new doctors and all. I’m hoping to be pleasantly surprised, but at least there should be time to look around at options if I’m very unpleasantly surprised.

Regardless, I am very happy that people with preexisting conditions will be able to get insurance. We’ve bought our own healthcare insurance for years and I know exactly how insurance companies get rid of the people they don’t want (even though we, fortunately, are pretty healthy.)

I realize that you won’t pay attention, but the way a Democratic-Repubic works is we elect people who then work together who pass laws, and if people don’t like them, then they vote those people out of office. And yet, here we are, two congressional and one presidential election later, and the senate that passed the bill is still in Democratic hands, and the president that signed the bill is still president.

The only reason Republicans still have control of the House is gerrymandering - they got a million fewer votes than Democrats did, in the one place that is supposed to truly represent the voters. So, you know what, if the voters didn’t really like the law, they didn’t exactly vote against it.

I’m eagerly looking forward to the train wreck over the next two weeks. I think we’re finally seeing the snapping point. Either they’re going to take us over the cliff and end themselves for the next 20 years, or they’re going to reject the Tea Party blackmail and we’ll see them primary themselves into irreverence.

Either way, it seems like our long national nightmare may finally be ending. Presuming Obama doesn’t try to “negotiate” again.
