20 Justanotherhuman  Sun, Sep 29, 2013 2:46:54pm

I don’t even know what to say about Cruz & The Traitors anymore.

Are they counting on people to not actually know how a law gets passed, not to mention how one gets a law overturned? Are they trying to act as examples of congressional scofflaws? Do they hate their jobs so much they’re willing to risk them? Do they love licking the butts of their sponsors whose ideas and agendas they support in Congress—like the most recent ones—“overturning” ACA and shutting down the govt?

Come on, these people are the most anti-American ones I’ve seen in my lifetime, short of double agents and spies for foreign govts.

What they’re doing is not governing or being representatives of the people, it’s sabotage.

“There has been too much violence. Too much pain. But I have an honorable compromise. Just walk away. Give up your healthcare and taking care of the poor and women and we will spare the economy. Just walk away and we’ll give you a safe passageway in the wastelands. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror.

I await your answer. You have a full day to decide. “

That’s simple enough, Republicans had no problems passing a budget all 8 years Bush was in office because they were willing to compromise to make it happen. They didn’t refuse to appoint a committee until Republicans signed a pre-negotiation agreement to raise taxes.

Evening Lizardim from the beautifully clear and temperate wild north country. How go things among the lizardfolk?

38 Eclectic Cyborg  Sun, Sep 29, 2013 3:15:23pm

I for one will be really, REALLY disappointed if they go the “He’s been in the hospital dying of cancer and the whole thing never really happened” route, where Gus Fring is one of his doctors and Saul Goodman is actually Walter’s nurse and Jesse is just some kid in the next hospital bed over.

I mean in this case, given the fact he WAS diagnosed with cancer that kind of a “dream” ending would at least be somewhat plausible but I still think it would be the wrong way to go.

It would be a serious cop-out, but as I’ve found as the years go on, Hollywood these days is creatively bankrupt. If there’s a way to end the series that’s cliched as hell, they’ll take it.

There’s the odd exception where they try something new, and it’s generally never repeated because the fandom simply throws a shitfit instead. See the end to The Sopranos for an example of what I mean.

I highly doubt they’d go there. The shitstorm that would cause would be HUGE. People want to see Walt get what’s coming his way, and they want Jesse to find his way out, if he can.

Should be interesting to see what happens.

67 Targetpractice  Sun, Sep 29, 2013 3:40:50pm

I know some folks have compared to this the last shutdown, even I’ve found myself doing it. But really, with last night’s little double down from the House GOP, it’s unprecedented. Back then, Newt was demanding that we get spending under control and used the shutdown to get a deal that Republicans to this day balanced the budget.

Here, we’re not talking the budget, because the GOP already won with the sequester. No, here we’re talking a political party that wishes to hold the nation hostage to its ideological demands. There has never been a political party that stood up, after losing the previous election so disastrously, and demanded it be given everything it ran on in exchange for not destroying the economy.

I’m getting the feeling they are gonna squawk and threaten all the way up ‘til 1/2 hour before midnight Monday and then slip a simple clear bill through and then immediately go on squawking about how they were bullied by Obama and Reid and it is all their fault, vote for us next time because we did the people’s work and go right back to work doing what they’ve been doing hoping it works next election. Meanwhile they will count the money they made from “the people” to help fight the good fight. And, since evil won out this time, you need to increase your donations so we can stamp out progressives in your grand children’s time!

But it was never their fault this whole time. It was the work of the DEVIL DEMS!!!

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif: Holocaust a ‘Heinous Crime’ and a ‘Genocide’

Buried in the media noise.

abcnews.go.com

Meh, it’s an old gimmick. Say one thing in English to the Western press while saying something completely different back home. From your article…

In an exclusive interview this morning on “This Week,” Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif condemned the Holocaust as a “heinous crime” and a “genocide,” dismissing as a poor translation the appearance of the word “myth” about the Holocaust on the Iranian Supreme Leader’s English website.

Iran has been criticized in recent years for the words of its former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who often denied the existence of the Holocaust, while the phrase “the myth of the massacre of Jews” appears in a translation of a speech from February 2006 by Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamanei.

“The Holocaust is not a myth. Nobody’s talking about a myth,” Zarif told George Stephanopoulos on “This Week” Sunday when asked about the quote. “If it’s there … it’s a bad translation, and it’s translated out of context… This is the problem when you translate something from Persian to English, you may lose something, as the film goes, ‘Lost in Translation,’ you may lose some of the meaning.”

That’s obviously bullshit. It’s neither a translation error nor an out of context quote. Here’s the speech

The more important issue is the outrageous affront to the Holy Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him and his infallible household), which brings disgrace to Western civilization with regard to the freedom of expression. Such offensive acts discredit and bring shame upon liberal democracy, the banner of which has been raised by Western countries and in which these countries take pride, with respect to the freedom of expression.

Western countries allow no freedom of expression, which they claim to advocate, with regard to the myth of the massacre of Jews known as the holocaust, and nobody in the West enjoys the freedom of expression to deny it or raise doubts about it.

There are many individuals in European countries, including scientists, scholars, historians and journalists, who do not dare to express their doubts about this issue. There are also some who believe that the whole issue is a lie, but they do not dare to say so because they have seen that whoever has said so has been punished, prosecuted and imprisoned and has been deprived of his rights.

However, affronting the sanctities of about 1.5 billion Muslims - without any reasons or the existence of any quarrels between the two or any affronts on the part of Muslims to their sanctities - is permissible in the West and benefits from the freedom of expression!

Trolls are immune to logic damage and have high DR to other attacks. You need something irreducible, or possibly have to use something that can cause serious collateral damage to the thread.

BTW, the Iranian’s also claimed their desire to “wipe Israel off the map” was also a translation error.

It wasn’t just the Iranians who claimed that. Since “wipe x off the map” is an English idiom, it certainly is an arguable and idiomatic translation. Iran’s opposition to the existence of Israel isn’t exactly a secret, with the closest they’ve ever come to the idea of an independent Israel being saying if the Palestinians vote for that, but that’s a rather optimistic (heh) interpretation of one stance. In general, they have always presented the same position about Israel: They don’t recognize the Israeli government as legitimate authority, they want the right of return for all ‘refugees’ including the children of refugees, and want that population (which would be majority Palestinian) voting on what to do. These are not things that Iran can actually bring about, but if they occurred they would 99% mean the end of Israel.

What Iran has actually said is so damning and so obviously opposed to Israel that it’s weird to me people obsess about laying the obvious English Idiom “Wipe Israel off the map” on top of it all. Like they can’t really be understood unless you awkwardly Americanize what they say.

This is probably all a little too nuanced for you, maybe you should just say “outrage!” or something meaningful like that.

He’s also becoming rather obsessive about opposing the Greater Israel Lobby (sic), and says if Syria has to give up chemical weapons and Iran has to give up nukes then Israel should also dismantle their non-conventional capacity. Because Jews have some baseless paranoia that anybody might want them all dead, it’s been more than 60 years already get over it.

I think so, but there are fine lines so we’re talking about minutia. It usually is phrased a bit more vaguely, usually just a blanket condemnation or atrocities in general with something thrown in about Israel and the Palestinians. Rouhani did his version of the same dance…

“We condemn the killing of innocent people, whether it happened in Nazi Germany or whether it’s happening in Palestine,” Zarif said. “[The] Holocaust was a heinous crime, it was a genocide, it must never be allowed to be repeated, but that crime cannot be and should not be a justification to trample the rights of the Palestinian people for 60 years.”

I have no idea what he believes personally but he’s a smart guy and probably knows the holocaust actually happened but the press back home will claim he didn’t say that. His statements were for Western consumption.

Buried in the media noise.

Much as it annoys me to agree with KT, he’s right on this one. I just spent the last hour digging through the Khamenei site to find the original Farsi version. It was a major PITA because they use a different calendar, plus I have a hard time reading Persian or Arabic web fonts. It doesn’t help that it’s religious/political speech rather than the street slang & literary stuff I cut my teeth on.

Anyway, after using Google Translate to determine where the exact sentence was, I located the word in question and ran it through my preferred online Farsi dictionary, then followed up by dragging out my meat world Persian
dictionaries. It means fable, myth, or by-word, no getting around it. The actual part of the sentence in Farsi is (hope it survives being posted):

در باب افسانه ى كشتار يهوديان - معروف به هلوكاست

در باب - concerning, on the subject of, regarding

افسانه - fable, myth, or by-word (the ى after it simply means “of”, connecting it to the verb + subject that follow)

كشتار - killing, slaughter

يهوديان - Jews

معروف به - known as (when used alone معروف means “famous”, so it denotes something well or commonly known)

هلوكاست - this is a transliteration of the word Holocaust
