Al Qaeda Plot Leak Undermined US Intelligence

“A startling finding”
US News • Views: 16,517

The charming thing about US news media: they’ve set it up so that they win either way. They get traffic and readers by reporting leaks of secret national security information, then they get more traffic and readers by reporting how their reports have harmed national security.

WASHINGTON — As the nation’s spy agencies assess the fallout from disclosures about their surveillance programs, some government analysts and senior officials have made a startling finding: the impact of a leaked terrorist plot by Al Qaeda in August has caused more immediate damage to American counterterrorism efforts than the thousands of classified documents disclosed by Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor.

Since news reports in early August revealed that the United States intercepted messages between Ayman al-Zawahri, who succeeded Osama bin Laden as the head of Al Qaeda, and Nasser al-Wuhayshi, the head of the Yemen-based Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, discussing an imminent terrorist attack, analysts have detected a sharp drop in the terrorists’ use of a major communications channel that the authorities were monitoring. Since August, senior American officials have been scrambling to find new ways to surveil the electronic messages and conversations of Al Qaeda’s leaders and operatives.

“The switches weren’t turned off, but there has been a real decrease in quality” of communications, said one United States official, who like others quoted spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence programs.

Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency traitor…

No lie, that’s how I read it at first.

The problem is managing the press is tricky because you’ve got that pesky 1st Amendment.

As I understand it, the government and authorities CAN request a news agency to not publish certain information, but the news agency is under no requirement to abide by such a request.

“Do I keep this program secret and avoid damaging what might be a vital intelligence resource, possibly getting caught with my thumb up my ass when someone else publishes it…or do I publish it and hope like hell that nothing bad comes of it? Decisions, decisions…”

Now, now…there’s no evidence they are to blame…

The drop in message traffic after the communication intercepts contrasts with what analysts describe as a far more muted impact on counterterrorism efforts from the disclosures by Mr. Snowden of the broad capabilities of N.S.A. surveillance programs. Instead of terrorists moving away from electronic communications after those disclosures, analysts have detected terrorists mainly talking about the information that Mr. Snowden has disclosed.

…wait…never mind. There’s quite a bit of evidence.

Media thrives on leaks by those in the government for stories like this. They need those leaks, whether sanctioned or not. When those leaks cause harm to US national security, there’s a hue and cry for action to prosecute leakers.

Media then cries foul that the crackdown harms their rights, even as national security is harmed.

Undermining US intelligence is their goal. None of this has anything to do with privacy issues or the 4th Amendment.

Our intel agencies need to be able to keep the big secrets. Better internal shields. Then maybe sunset the P.A., take a reasonable look at the legal meaning of “relevance” in the act, and a lot of the pressure to reveal goes away. You are right at the end of the day our media can publish whatever they can dig up. And we can’t take away the shovel.

Klayman: Failed Ted Cruz ‘Filibuster’ Proves Obama Must Be Overthrown on November 19

Larry Klayman should be more concerned about the molestation charges than some random day where Obama will be “overthrown.” Oh and asshole you’re advocating sedition, so maybe add that to your charges.

McClatchy Newspapers first reported on the conversations between Mr. Zawahri and Mr. Wuhayshi on Aug. 4. Two days before that, The New York Times agreed to withhold the identities of the Qaeda leaders after senior American intelligence officials said the information could jeopardize their operations. After the government became aware of the McClatchy article, it dropped its objections to The Times’s publishing the same information, and the newspaper did so on Aug. 5.

Any repercussions for McClatchy?

The “filibuster” that Ted had to get Reid’s permission to stage? The “filibuster” that members of his own party rolled their eyes at and compared to theater? The “filibuster” that ended with his joining every other Republican Senator in voting to go forward with debating the bill?

The same but let’s let Loony Larry think that Obama’s going to be overthrown on November 19th and then we can laugh at him as he tries to spin in circles why the “coup” didn’t happen.

An official who’d been briefed on the matter in Sanaa, the Yemeni capital, told McClatchy that the embassy closings and travel advisory were the result of an intercepted communication between Nasir al-Wuhayshi, the head of the Yemen-based Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, and al Qaida leader Ayman al Zawahiri in which Zawahiri gave “clear orders” to al-Wuhaysi, who was recently named al Qaida’s general manager, to carry out an attack.

The official, however, said he could not divulge details of the plot. AQAP’s last major attack in Sanaa took place in May 2012 when a suicide bomber killed more than 100 military cadets at a rehearsal for a military parade.

Any repercussions for ‘an official’?

This needs to be hung on the GOP. They want people to think that it’s about the Democrats and their refusal to accept the GOP demand that Obamacare be delayed (or defunded or destroyed).

It is all about the GOP’s inane demands to overrule the 2012 voting results and substituting their asinine judgment for those of the voters who reelected the President.

So, they’re hoping to game events to their political advantage. Pass budget resolutions that have no chance of passage because they are so unreasonable and so larded with GOP pie in the sky demands that they don’t pass the laugh test (or smell test). A clean version - without those demands/provisions would pass easily if the GOP leadership in the House relents on the Hastert rule, but Boehner’s got no choice but to risk a shutdown to appease the extortionists.

And we get to do this all over again with the debt ceiling. When the GOP doesn’t get its way in defunding/delaying/destroying Obamacare under the budget talks, they’ll have a go of it with the debt ceiling even though the debt ceiling is about covering appropriations Congress previously approved.

what really worries me is what happens after the 2014 elections

I just hope there’s something that year like we saw in 2010 only with the parties controlling the House changing hands. The American people need to hold the GOP accountable for this mess they’ve caused simply because they think it’s good policy to defund a legal healthcare legislation simply because they’re mad that they got out-smarted on that front. The American people need to see Boehner, Cantor, and the GOP leadership for the scumbags they are.

We had that whole little bit of theater last week, including Cruz’s “non-filibuster,” but now Republicans would like us all to experience total amnesia and assume the bill the GOP sent over the weekend is the only CR that’s been passed.

Not happening.

in the Way Back of the 1960-70’s, the CRA was pushed thru, Women were making strides in equality and Roe v Wade was passed. WE saw violence and upheaval like never before.

Then it all calmed down. Most people realized the CRA and Women’s rights were the correct thing and it wasn’t going bring on disaster.

Now we are dealing with LGBT rights and working to maintain Women’s rights.
We see violence and upheaval. The Neanderthals are afraid of the devil.

Change is hard. Now the Whackos have radical Islam to blame and use as their devil instead of the black man.

Defenders are always responsible for a conflict. If they just gave in, then there wouldn’t be any disagreements.

Right, it’s the folks who don’t give in to blackmail who are the problem, just like it’s abused spouses who cause the abuse - “Look what you made me do!”

After all, as my wingnut friend told me, Gitmo inmates aren’t being tortured, because they can always stop it just by telling their interrogators what they want to know.

I dunno, when my father was sent home from work as a child because his employer’s bosses had decided that they were going to stop having the government operate, it didn’t feel especially like a dog-and-pony-show, or like business as usual.

It felt like it might well be the end of the fucking world. And we didn’t exactly live hand-to-mouth.

dog-and-pony show for those orchestrating it. Real life consequence for the voters. They don’t care about the voters.

My dad was laid-off as well.

Hey Rep. Stockman. You had option to work in August, but you and the rest of the House had the entire month off. That’s more vacation time than most everyone who works gets for the entire year.

And that’s days in session, not necessarily days in which the House actually passed laws.

More than that, the official calendar for the year listed all of 126 days in session altogether.

Nice work if you can get it.

Should ask him whether that applies to peace in the Middle East. All Israel has to do to stop the terrorists from shooting rockets into their territory is disband their country and walk into the sea.

GOP’s message is pretty much “Sure we won’t shutdown the government but you have do everything we want and nothing you want.” I try to refrain from using the word “terrorist” but that’s exactly what their actions resemble. The House GOP meme is that Obama’s talking to the President of Iran but not them. Dare I say it but the President of Iran is acting more reasonable than anyone in the Tea Party caucus when it comes to the president and important issues.

I hope to later in life to help revive Detroit. I think, even now, it is a much better city than places like Houston, Dallas, or Phoenix.

Or hell, better than Los Angeles and its stupid sprawl.

And they get to vote to raise their own pay while at the same time many of them like Stockman get to lecture the rest of us on our work ethic. Hey, asshole, I did my time, got my degree and even got a job but you’re screwing over my prospects because you hate POTUS more than you want to help your country. YOu shouldn’t be in Congress. You shouldn’t even with your mindset be allowed to father children. Goddamn this shit pisses me off. It’s tough as is getting a job already. It’s even tougher to finally get a job and then for it to be delayed because the shits that run the GOP would prefer shutting down the government then letting ACA be funded.

I’d like to see some of the kids of the MOTOWN starz work to restore Detroit. Always pissed-me off a little that those that made it abandoned the city. Same with the Jackson’s and Gary, IN.
