More than 24,000 people browsed Kentucky’s health insurance website before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, the opening day to sign up for the Affordable Care Act.

The large number of people accessing the site caused “a few technical glitches” at Kynect.Ky.Gov, but 1,000 applications had been processed by 9:30 a.m., according to Gwenda Bond, a spokeswoman for the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

I think there doesn’t need to be a coin, or even a reference to the 14th amendment. If Congress does not raise the debt ceiling, the President will have three choices, all of which are illegal:

1) Cut spending arbitrarily

2) Raise taxes arbitrarily

3) Ignore the debt ceiling

Choosing the least damaging option is a no-brainer.

As if getting insurance through your employer is a piece of cake and not without glitches. From personal experience, major insurer and company sites have both gone done or provided wrong information, or failed to save changes, or provided incomplete data.

But the ugly side of it is that we pit individuals and families with limited resources against multi-billion dollar international corporations to negotiate for terms of employment, insurance coverage and financial services.

And we demonize any attempts to improve their bargaining position by collectivizing as socilism, unionism or slavery.

I suspect that when the Federal Reserve makes decisions about monetary policy, they take into account the potential for economic damage caused by Republicans. This government shutdown is a perfect example. The January 1, 2013 removal of Social Security tax reductions is another.

I assume the Federal Reserve will do its best to smooth over the economic shock of the shutdown.

I still feel that the prospect of default is simply not on the table, given the role of the US dollar as the primary world reserve currency. But it’s not as unthinkable as it used to be. I’m sure that foreign governments and bankers are taking a very hard look at us right now.

Cops fatally shoot Texas homeowner who shot and killed intruder

Hall confronted the intruder, shot him and threatened to shoot him again as he stood over him in an alley behind the Far East Dallas home, investigators said.

When officers arrived, they said the 57-year-old Hall pointed a 9 mm handgun at them and witnesses.

Police said Hall disregarded orders to drop the weapon, and officers fatally shot him.

A police spokesman said responding officers didn’t realize that Hall was defending his own home, but the spokesman said Hall “had plenty of opportunities to de-escalate” the situation.

Police said they were called to the incident by a contractor working at a nearby house who told them Hall pointed a gun and at witnesses who heard the gunshots in the alley.

Each of the GOP CRs, or budget plans has or does include poison pill provisions for Obamacare. They must be disabused of that tactic once and for all.

And their fallback provision is to now try and avoid the kind of hurt that a shutdown does by funding agencies piecemeal - for a limited time no less.

Stringing out the hurt and increasing uncertainty in the budgeting process is quite harmful too. But this is the GOP at its core.

my sister (who has since gone bankrupt over medical bills) voiced similar concerns about her medicare payments, that they might be endangered or watered down by the ACA.

At least career politicians more less understand their jobs. A lot of the idiots we elected in 2010 were elected simply based on emotion. I know it’s not exactly a popular position but I’d rather have lifer politicians who know and understand politics and the turf that comes with it than a bunch of know nothings who got elected by attaching themselves to a populist demagogue movement.

Our experience here in CA with Term Limits tells me that it’s a great SOUNDING idea that in practice is really, really stupid. Instead of serious political wheeler-dealers who get shit done, you get a bunch of starry-eyed idealists and ideologues who not only don’t grasp that you never, ever get al of what you want, but also are so unskilled at writing effective laws that they end up using what Lobbyists give them.

Right, I always thought term limits sounded like a great idea on paper too but I’ve seen a lot of the side products of electing a bunch of idealists and idealogues are pretty much what you describe. I guess that’s why the TP hates the GOP establishment. They are lifer politicians and I do understand why people have contempt for political lifers but I respect the man who has taken his career to educate himself about the political process from dealing with people to understanding as the Rolling Stones put it that you can’t always get what you want. A lot of these freshmen were elected based on raw anger that they used to get votes. I understand that waves happen but the 2010 wave makes some of the numbskulls we got in ‘94 due to Newt’s wave look like nothing.

And now for the rest of the story. The GOP knew that the President and Democrats would never go along with their debased plan to defund, delay, and destroy Obamacare. That’s precisely why they’ve tried more than 40 times to vote to repeal it.

Then, they got the inspired idea to attach a poison pill defund/delay/destroy provision to the budget negotiations - to the continuing resolutions that Congress has used to fund government operations since it has repeatedly failed to pass an actual budget for years because of similar tactics.

Passing a CR without the poison pill - the budget would be passed today. With the poison pills - we get stalemate. The GOP purposely did this to try and cast blame on Democrats, except their intentions were so transparent and their inclusion of the GOP/TPExtortionist wing wet dream (everything from abortion to Keystone, etc.) into the budget talks.

And if that fails, they’ll do the same to the debt ceiling.

It’s extortion. And people are beginning to realize what this is. That’s why there’s no negotiations. You don’t negotiate with extortionists.

WHY WE ARE DOING THIS:

In addition to this being part of our mission anyway, we feel like we are flat running out of time and we need to get as prepared as possible as fast as possible. The Oath Keepers national Board of Directors war-gamed what we think is the most likely move by our enemies to scrap the Constitution. On the BOD at the time were a Special Forces Major, an Army Ranger, and a Marine Scout-sniper veteran, as well as a retired Navy Commander and several Vietnam combat vets, and several other combat arms veterans. Playing devil’s advocate, and putting themselves in the enemy’s shoes, we estimated that the most effective course for “them” to follow would be to:

1. Intentionally trigger a catastrophic economic collapse as an economic “neutron bomb” (kills the people, but leaves the land intact). With the current intentional lack of a Strategic Grain Reserve, our population is in a strategic “checkmate” position where an economic collapse could be a near-extinction event for our population. During the Cold War, the U.S. government maintained three years worth of grain in a Strategic Grain Reserve for the entire US population because they knew that in the wake of a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union, it could take three years to recover and grow crops again. Without that reserve, those who survived the exchange would starve to death before they could possibly restart growing enough food. We now have no such Strategic food reserve, which means that any catastrophic interruption in food delivery could kill millions of Americans. Such a disruption could occur because of even a limited nuclear exchange, an EMP strike (either man-made, or natural, as a result of solar activity), or, an economic collapse.

Currently, our economy is in such a weak state that an economic collapse could be intentionally triggered at any time. Because of the lack of a food reserve, and because few Americans store food on their own, such a collapse would lead to mass starvation, just like in the aftermath of a nuclear exchange.

The US government is spending billions of dollars on ammunition, armored vehicles, and weapons for DHS and local police. It is spending nothing on food for the people. They are preparing to control and contain us, and to shoot us, but not preparing to feed us. Why is that? You know the answer.

2. Let the country descend into chaos. A national economic collapse would be like a “national Katrina” but lasting far longer, and because it is nation-wide, it would be far more intense. The cities would implode. All the government would have to do is contain them and let them implode. in the midst of that chaos, they could also do a decapitation strike on the leaders of the liberty movement, but other than that, “They” could just sit back and wait a month, two months, or three to be really sure the people are at a maximum level of starvation, weakness, and chaos, and then:

3. Ride in like the cavalry, to “save” us by means of martial law and scrapping our constitution once-and-for all. They could blame the collapse on the so-called “free market” and on not having enough government power, and they could blame delays in relief on the “extremists” in the patriot movement (i.e. “we would have gotten the food trucks in sooner, but the extremists were ambushing our safety check-points and resisting the necessary relocation to relief camps”). Their ready to go solution would be a world-wide version of the Fed, and a world wide government. People would be told to “just turn in your guns, and you’ll get food” and “just turn in the extremists, and you’ll get food.”

ADDITIONAL ANALYSIS: To the above, we now add Brandon Smith’s insight that with a war in Syria, the elites can trigger an economic collapse with a war - with Russia and China using economics as a weapon in retaliation. All China would have to do is dump US treasuries and refuse to trade with US dollars. That would begin the final death-spiral of the dollar.

The Chinese would be blamed for the collapse, rather than the banksters. “They” would tell the American people that the evil Chinese are to blame for the death of the dollar, and anyone who resists the “emergency measures” by the US government would be accused of aiding the enemy. They would say “domestic extremists took advantage of the Chinese economic attack on us to push their own racist and extremist anti-government agenda, making the collapse worse by attacking peace-keepers and international relief volunteers, and by attacking and resisting US officials who were trying to restore law and order.”

It is because of the systemic weakness of the American people, and our strategic checkmate position of having no strategic food storage and no effective local security, that we feel the need to take Oath Keepers operational and put our focus on each chapter being a training cadre to get their communities as prepared and organized as possible in whatever time we have left.

That’s flat-out madness.

You’ve got a new website that is sure to get lots of hits and yet at the same time, the web people who can make it run more smoothly aren’t working because of a shutdown. I don’t know why that’s so hard to figure out but I’ve been of the observation that everything this president does causes certain IQs to diminish.

Dipshit wingnut cousin still has a lot to learn, My pointing out that the IT contractors who keep the websites up and running are “non-essential” got me this response:

I’m now having to explain that he’s missing the point. The whole reason the websites are slow today isn’t because no one did a dry run. It’s because the IT contractors that would be keeping the websites up and running are considered “non-essential” employees. Government shutdown = “non-essential” employees staying home. Ergo, slow websites.

Maybe someday he’ll figure it out, but I doubt it. He’s swallowed the PJ Media line wholesale, considering how often he links to them.

Drive him nuts. Tell him nobody had any idea how POPULAR it would be!!!

Oh, he’s now telling me that “YOUR missing the point that my status update was a joke!!!!!!” and saying it’s no wonder that Congress has a 10% approval rating.

My answer to that was, “Yeah, I can see how trying to repeal the same damn law 46 times when repeal has no chance of getting out of the Senate would cause people to roll their eyes at Congress after a while.” Heh.

Tell him, politely of course, that the websites HAVE been up and running for quite some time. People have been visiting the sites to comparison shop and educate themselves much earlier than only today.
In addition to the IT peeps being furloughed, there’s this market force called “Demand” that also had a little bit to do with the sites being overwhelmed this morning.

Thank you for saying that, I just heard about that this morning. Fuckers. Why is there no penalty for lying to the American people? Losing an election is not really enough IMO.

On a happier note, it looks like this mess isn’t going to interfere, as of yet, with my son entering the program/school for young adults with autism. Yet.
