The original Mason Williams version has been used on countless TV and radio shows. I remember a bowling show (yes!) that used it as the sound track.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world:

Holy Hittite city being unearthed in northern Turkey

Archaeological excavations have been ongoing for eight years in the village of Oymaağaç of Vezirköprü district in the northern province of Samsun, aiming to unearth the holy Hittite city of Nerik. The head of the excavations, German archaeologist Associate Professor Rainer Czichon said that works in Oymaağaç had started in 2005 and this year’s excavations had now ended.

Czichon said that they had carried out surface survey during the first two years, and then started excavations. “Our goal is to prove that Oymaağaç is the holy city of the Hittite, which is Nerik. “We already know that this region is a Hittite settlement. We have found cuneiform tablets that will prove that this place is Nerik. There are scriptures about Nerik in four cuneiform tablets that we found this year. There is a part named ‘Tahanga’ in two of the tablets. Tahanga is a section in Nerik’s ‘god of air’ temple. This is a strong proof that Oymaağaç is Nerik. We are sure for 95 percent,” Czichon said.

This is what the “free marketeers” like those on the RW want, and goddamnit, these words are chilling: “We do not claim to be a facility,” said Chandler. “We claim to be extensions of [the] parents.”

New Mexico ranch where boys went missing was under investigation for abuse

investigations.nbcnews.com

“Fleming described an alleged incident in which a staffer had repeatedly hit Morgan in the head with a short metal rod called a kubotan. “He just smashed his forehead repeatedly,” said Fleming, “and it went on, gosh, for hours.”

“According to a police report of the incident, witnesses alleged that a staff member hit Morgan on the head for an hour and a half and then threatened to castrate him. Morgan allegedly replied, “Go ahead, I don’t care,” and said that when it was over at least he would get some sleep.

“Students also alleged that they had been shackled and handcuffed, forced to work and exercise for 15 hours at a time, and forced to beat each other up for infractions.”

I hope those responsible are convicted and serve some really hard time.

Thanks for posting that. I keep almost Paging it, but keep waiting for more info. Look at the website for that place. This is from their ‘program overview’:

A Simple Life

The ranch is a 30,000 acre working cattle ranch 40 miles from the nearest town. The Chandlers are Cattle ranchers with a heart for God, and turning kids lives around. The environment is similar to what a ranch would be like 100 years ago. It is a simple life, where kids get back to nature by camping, cooking, physical fitness, working cattle, riding horses, caring for animals, doing school work, reading, singing and being in a loving environment.
For over 15 years Tierra Blanca Ranch (TBR) has been working with kids that are:

1. Unmanageable & uncontrollable by their families or society 8. Unwanted or at-risk,
2. Spiraling out of control. 9. Emotionally, mentally or physically damaged by their environment
3. Not responding well with traditional counseling 10. Sexually abused
4. Defiant and noncompliant 11. Addicted to drugs, sex, pornography,
5. Stealing and Lying 12. Suicidal
6. Physically threatening 13. Hurting themselves or others
7. ADD, RAD, ADHD and other morbidities

There are instances when parents, counselors and therapists see a child needs to be removed from their current environment to help break the stalemate, the downward spiral, the irrational cycle in which the child is stuck before its too late.
Unmanageable Kids are taught:

• Responsibility,
• Self discipline,
• Leadership skills,
• Intellectual development,
• Consequences,
• The necessity of having self respect and respect for others.
• Sound biblical principles.

The last part was no surprise.

Yeah, that “spare the rod and spoil the child” bullshit, although it sounds more like Torquemada was in charge and the Chandlers got lots of free labor—if you didn’t kneel to it, you got the rack and more. They claim kids are suffering from all those things (they call them “morbidities”!), but where’s the proof? It looks like, from the “testimonials” that they get these young men (the photos look like mid-teens+) from word of mouth advertising. That last thought also crossed my mind.

Supposedly they’ve been ‘under investigation’ since 2006. Really, the TV station KOB decided to look into the place after a kid was killed when the pickup truck he was riding in the back of crashed.

When the story about Tierra Blanca Ranch hit my desk, all I knew at the time was that a teenaged boy, Bruce, had died in a truck rollover on the ranch land. My News Director asked that I look into Tierra Blanca Ranch to see if there is anything more to the story…and I’m so glad I listened.

Within hours of taking the assignment, I had built case files with hundreds of pages of documents of allegations in police reports and state documents that showed a pattern of complaints alleging rampant abuse at Tierra Blanca Ranch. At least a dozen boys interviewed at different times by different investigators said they were forced into child slavery by tending the 30,000 acre ranch owned by Scott Chandler. They told stories of working outside for up to 15 hours a day in grueling conditions, sometimes in extreme temperatures. They said they were punished by excessive exercises, food deprivation, threats of castration, and brutal beatings. In a police report, one teen described being forced by a staff member to put rocks and sand in a sock and beat his friend. The boys also described what they called a “firewall.” When a teen is “firewalled,” he’s not allowed to talk to other people or be spoken to, which as you can imagine creates a very lonely existence.

It’s important that we question why a man who admits he and his staff have no professional training to work with at-risk kids is taking in dozens of teens with serious behavioral health issues. It’s also important that we question what our state agencies have done about these allegations.

Waitress picks up tab for National Guard soldiers working through government shutdown without pay

The government shutdown has left many with furloughed pay, but one Ruby Tuesday waitress decided to lend a helping hand to a pair of Nation Guard women that came into her restaurant.

As Sarah Hoidahl served the two soldiers at the Concord, N.H., Ruby Tuesday, they explained that because of the government shutdown, money was a little tight and they were forced to watch their expenses, reported Business Insider.

SNIP

As the meal came to an end and it came time to bring the tab, Hoidahl decided to brighten their days.

“I was kind of like, ‘I’m going to do a good deed today.’ And I wrote them a little note,” Hoidahl said Thursday.

Instead of a bill, the soldiers received a note that said, “Thanks to the government shutdown, the people like you that protect this country are not getting paid. However, I still am. Lunch is on me. Thank you for serving ladies! Have a good day!”

Which reminds me. What the hell is up with some political gathering being called the Values Voters Summit? More nice sounding GOP claptrap. More thinking we have more and better values than everyone else, especially of a religious nature. It’s the same BS that they elevate themselves with, like a humanists can’t possibly be moral because God.

Democrats, Independents, and others have no values!!! We know, because we can judge everyone. Well, sure that flies in the face of some basic foundations of Christianity, but it feels so good to know we are so good and God loves us more then you.

I wasn’t aware Iran updated its laws on homosexuality.

Until recently same-sex sodomy was punishable by death but a new amendment to the penal code, approved in 2012, has brought new changes. Under the new penal code, in effect, the person who played an active role will be flogged 100 times if the sex was consensual and he was not married, but the one who played a passive role will still be put to death regardless of his marriage status. Punishment for mosahegheh (lesbianism) is 100 lashes for all individuals involved, but it can lead to the death penalty if the act is repeated four times.

Yeah, if they force Boehner to accept a less than friendly deal for the House, he might be rendered totally powerless!

Which, you know, is far worse than being the Tea Party’s bitch right now.

All the talk of Boehner losing his Speakership made me want to research how that could be accomplished.

CHANG: Ultimately, Cannon’s motion never passed. Under today’s House rules, any member can propose a resolution to remove the speaker, and that proposal can get to the floor pretty quickly. All it needs to pass is a simple majority. But that’s where things get complicated. The other party has a large block of votes too, and how they’ll vote is unpredictable. In any event, speakers under fire haven’t waited for that to happen. Usually they resign first, like Jim Wright in 1989, when he was under an ethics investigation over speaking fees, or Newt Gingrich in 1998. After getting blamed for a government shutdown and the loss of Republican seats in the House, Gingrich knew his influence was waning. He decided he neither wanted to be speaker nor a rank-and-file member of Congress.

NEWT GINGRICH: And I think there comes a time when you’ve got to step out and let a new team take over, let a new team try to do the best they can.

CHANG: But what would it take for Boehner to actually resign? Ron Peters of the University of Oklahoma says it would likely be some formal action - not on the floor but within the House Republican caucus.

RON PETERS: And they would proceed by a motion of no confidence. And if that were to carry by a majority of Republicans, then Speaker Boehner would in all likelihood choose to resign the speakership.

Even though the Tea Party caucus isn’t quite a majority of the R’s in the House, they’re by far the most vocal. So it could make sense that Boehner is appeasing them because he’s afraid of losing his office, the recent 180 by the Chamber of Commerce, business and Wall Street leaders could have caught him off guard too. He thought going in that he had their support since they created the Tea Party golem, then they pulled the rug out once they realized their insane creation was actually eager for a default.

Anyway, point is that now Boehner really has painted himself into a corner. The GOP Civil War is heating up rapidly and it won’t be long before it spills over openly onto the House floor. The moderates are less likely to initiate a leadership challenge, especially because they’ve acted like bitchy, grumpy lemmings throughout this crisis so far - willing to complain mightily but otherwise marching in lockstep to their doom.

Ideally the moderates would align themselves with the Democrats in the House and elect either a bluedog (if they exist anymore) or more likely a suburban business conservative like Dave Reichert. This won’t happen because as a rule Republicans still hate Democrats more than they love their country. The problem is that kind of move would wither whatever grass roots funding they have left, and with the business conservatives realizing their own best interests lie elsewhere the GOP is going to need every dollar they can get for Fall 2014.

The problem is that kind of move would wither whatever grass roots funding they have left, and with the business conservatives realizing their own best interests lie elsewhere the GOP is going to need every dollar they can get for Fall 2014.

Way it seems right now, a very likely scenario that would play out is that the GOP would effectively fracture, making it impossible to pass anything in the House as Boehner would be unable to get the majority of the party to agree to anything, but still feel himself bound by the “Hastert Rule” to prevent any bill with significant Dem support from reaching the floor.

In that scenario, the Democrats might be able to convince enough “moderate” Republicans that Boehner can no longer control his caucus and new leadership is needed. They would vote to consider the Speaker’s position to be vacant, at which point Democrats could either agree to a moderate Republican who’d ditch the “Hastert Rule” and pursue a more centrist strategy.

Under such a situation, the Tea Party would be rendered powerless. They don’t command enough votes to do more than vote in protest to any bill that had bipartisan support in the House. They would vow retribution, but that’s a case of diminishing returns in the present environment, with fratricide in the party ranks allowing Democrats to make gains in purple districts.

Greenwald’s link is a somewhat hostile piece from McClachty DC:

Malala Yousafzai tells Obama drones are ‘fueling terrorism’

In a statement, the White House says the United States “joins with the Pakistani people and so many around the world to celebrate Malala’s courage and her determination to promote the right of all girls to attend school and realize their dreams.”

In a statement released after the meeting, Malala said she was honored to meet with Obama, but that she told him she’s worried about the effect of U.S. drone strikes. (The White House statement didn’t mention that part.)

“I thanked President Obama for the United States’ work in supporting education in Pakistan and Afghanistan and for Syrian refugees,” she said in the statement. “I also expressed my concerns that drone attacks are fueling terrorism. Innocent victims are killed in these acts, and they lead to resentment among the Pakistani people. If we refocus efforts on education it will make a big impact.”

No Malala, I’m sorry but such a refocus won’t have a big impact. Your country’s government is just too corrupt, such that a big increase in education aid will for the most part be stolen by corrupt officials. That corruption also makes education aid unpopular in the US, because it is seldom seen to be effectual.

Malala Yousafzai tells Obama drones are ‘fueling terrorism’

No Malala, I’m sorry but such a refocus won’t have a big impact. Your country’s government is just too corrupt, such that a big increase in education aid will for the most part be stolen by corrupt officials. That corruption also makes education aid unpopular in the US, because it is seldom seen to be effectual.

Really misleading/dishonest tweet from BuzzFeed’s McKay Coppins:

The WaPo article isn’t about “Breaking the Republicans” and isn’t about a new strategy added today, it’s about the difference between the Dem’s goal in this standoff (no unilateral concessions in exchange for not shutting down the gov’t or defaulting) vs prior impending crisis negotiations:

President Obama and congressional Democratic leaders, in their ongoing showdown with Republicans, now have an additional goal beyond protecting the health-care law, reopening the government and preventing the first-ever default on the nation’s debt.

They are gambling that if they can hang together and remain tough to the end, they stand a chance to break a dangerous cycle that has taken hold in Washington — one of legislating through brinkmanship, which has taken the government and the financial system to the edge of disaster at least four times over the past three years.

“This not just about Barack Obama. This is about the next president, whoever and whatever party it might be,” Obama told Democratic senators at a White House meeting on Thursday, according to Senate majority whip Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.).

So far, the Democrats’ strategy of refusing to meet Republican demands — which is not without risk — appears to be working.

The Obama quote is the same thing he’s been saying throughout this manufactured crisis and even long before. It’s not a “new goal to their shutdown strategy late in the game.”

Pakistan’s condition is terminal. What should be done is a pursuit of an end to the Cold War with Iran. That will be we can pull out of the Persian Gulf. In addition, Once we leave Afghanistan, cut Pakistan’s aid. It is doing no good, they have been supporting the Taliban now for probably something like 20 years, and I find it hard to believe that the ISI, with all its links to these guys, that they had no foggy clue about the 9/11 plot.

Unfortunately, that means Afghanistan will have to suffer. Afghanistan won’t improve until Pakistan is weaker and out of the picture. The only thing we can do for the Afghanis is offer some sort of scheme for people to leave like what we did in Vietnam. Parts of the American West and the Appalachians are similar to Afghanistan (Yes, there are some very green areas in Afghanistan).

Right now, the US should prepare for the eventual disintegration of Pakistan. The Balochs already want to leave as a result of brutalization of them by both the Pakistani Government, and their Taliban proxies.

Also, this would be history repeating itself. How much money and materiels did we give Pakistan to disperse during the Soviet War in Afghanistan? And most of it ended up directed to radicals.

Say we do give Pakistan aid money for education. They would be likely give it to the radical Madrassas, given historical patterns.

Ah, I see. She was complaining about drone strikes but recently we are opting to capture terror suspects for interrogation and trials. China has its own issues. Namely, its in a worse demographic spot than the Republicans right now.

An upside down population pyramid and a massive imbalance between the genders, skewing towards males, which limits it’s future growth for 1-2 generations. This is also compounded by the fact that minorities are allowed to have more children than the Han, so the Uyghurs and Tibetans (among a few others), are getting relatively stronger.

Also, their economy continues to rely on exports, which is bad considering that with a soon to occur scarcity of oil. Which is also compounded by environmental issues in the nation that is leading to more and more food imports and issues regarding chronic illness. And to this a habit of pissing off its neighbors their imperialism, and China is heading to a perfect storm.

The neighborhood in which Romney’s property situates is not tightly crowded but the lots are not huge either. Which means that Romney will have to kill off most of the living things on that property to build his mini-mansion in seaside La Jolla.

Further complexities involved the structure of any proposed deal. Mr. Greenwald is selling the rights to his book and may include his own life rights. But his journalistic collaborator, Laura Poitras, and Mr. Snowden have not put their own life rights for sale, according to the people briefed on the film. That leaves potential buyers to rely on legal precepts of fair use in portraying them, or on their assurances that they will not seek to interfere with a movie.

Why are these people still eating up headline space? Is this someone’s PR project?

Ann Romney serves up candor in her new cookbook

Two presidential campaigns and 40 years of marriage and child-rearing behind her, Ann Romney finds herself in a surprising place: atop the bestseller lists with her own agenda in first position.

Romney’s new cookbook, “The Romney Family Table,” started as an effort to stitch together family recipes. But at a time when her husband Mitt’s loss in the 2012 campaign was still raw, she began writing and “it just flowed out.” Critics have mocked the book as a study in domestic perfection served on Oscar de la Renta tableware, but Romney said she wanted to show that their life “wasn’t always perfect” and that raising five boys could be more than a little frustrating.

Demand for the book — with its homespun recipes for Mitt’s Meat Loaf Cakes and Banana Trash Pudding — may be partly fueled by curiosity: The book offers a far more intimate portrait of the family’s life than Mitt Romney’s consultants allowed last year. There are plenty of pictures showing Romney’s buttoned-down husband with his perfect coif a mess.

The US will go through crap. By the 2020’s, I would expect an American version of the Troubles that occurred in the UK in the latter half of the last century.

China’s economy, however, will eventually stop expanding at the current 7-8% a year. It is simply impossible to keep that up. And it is what keeping China peaceful internally. I expect a civil war by the 2030’s-2040’s.

Once we pull out of Afghanistan, I think there will be heavy public opposition in the US to give Pakistan anymore aid. I do expect Pakistan to pull apart in the next half a century, starting with Balochistan.

I do see a bright spot though. Khameini is 74. From the point of view of an actuary, he’s coming close to the end. Not only that, by the Millenials are a disproportionate amount of Iran’s Population. I expect a rapprochement between the US and Iran within a few decades.

I think the difference is that, while there have been a constant number of “assholes,” percent wise, you are now seeing the MTV Generation coming into government. This is the generation that watch “The Real World” when growing up, the ones that grew up in the 80’s, maybe into the 90’s.

Simply put, the MTV Generation is more likely to be obnoxious about their assholery.

My generation, with its hipsters and libertarians (there is a huge crossover between these groups, from what I saw at college), will likely have its assholes be the smuggest POS’s in the history of the planet.

Yikes! I’ve been watching what may be the densest blizzard of error, ignorance, and misinfomation ever put on television.
I refer to a History Channel presentation called 101 Weapons that Changed the World. This is supposedly the work of a “blue ribbon” panel of experts selected by Popular Mechanics magazine. The selections were decent; gunpowder, Colt pistol, catapult, Gatling gun, P-51, etc. but the detailed descriptions were apparently written by a completely uninformed intern on the basis of a half hour of Google search. The descriptions are necessarily brief, with 101 of them in about 90 minutes, so the BS flies fast and thick.
Examples:
-The “German Panzer tank” of WW2 was not a specific type. “Panzer” is simply a contraction of panzerkampfwagen (armored battle vehicle) and can refer to any tank of any nationality or type, from World War I to today.
-US Patton tanks did not overwhelm the Germans by force of numbers in World War 2. The first Patton tank did not appear until 1950, when the war had been over for 5 years.
-The B-52 was not the first aircraft to fly around the world non-stop.
-A “full metal jacket” does not encase the cartridge.
-Mustard gas was not invented in Washington DC.
-A6M Zeros did not carry torpedos at Pearl Harbor, or anywhere else for that matter, and there were more than 45 of them.
I collected these from about 7 minutes of this travesty. The atomic bomb took the number 1 spot, btw.

Heh. My ex-wife broke my dad of Fox News, and she did it in less than one minute.

He was watching it one day when her and I were back in the States visiting; anyway, she watched it for about five minutes, and blew up. She said to him, “You don’t really believe any of this? It’s shameless propaganda; I grew up in a Communist country and was subjected to this kind of non-stop propaganda every day of my life until I was 16. This is sickening.”

It actually made him stop and think - he asked her about it, it led to a discussion where she pointed out various propaganda techniques she’d been exposed to as a kid, and shortly after that, he quit watching it.

I shook them up last year when they kept talking about how they supported gay marriage, women’s right and equality. I point blank asserted that everything coming out of their mouths was self serving garbage, that they’d sacrificed all these supposed ideals of theirs for years in pursuit of, at best, a + or - 5% difference in their marginal tax rate, and that at their wealth level this couldn’t possibly have any impact on their standard of living.

This is happening in Scott Walker’s Wisconsin:

Mine firm questions protester’s role as a state geologist

Yes the mining firms concern about bias from the geologist is laughable considering they rewrote the mining laws to shoehorn their dirty mine into a pristine area.

Proposed Taconite Mine in the Penokee Range

The company Gogebic Taconite (GTAC) purchased the mineral rights for a vast area in northwestern Wisconsin— 21,000 acres along 22 miles of the beautiful Penokee Range in Ashland and Iron Counties. In 2011, GTAC proposed to build what could become the largest open-pit iron-ore mine in the world (4 1/2 miles long, 1.5 miles wide and up 1,000 feet deep) to extract taconite, a type of low-grade iron ore. Although they claimed to have no interest in circumventing Wisconsin’s safe-guard mining laws, they ended up working behind the scenes for months to gut the same mining laws that they supposedly were not interested in changing. AB 426 demolished environmental safeguards related to mining, eliminated public input, reduced revenues to local communities, and rushed the permit review process.

Man, do I hate lazy reporting. There are two types of iron ore lodes. One is hematite, iron oxide, and the other is limonite, a hydrated iron oxide. After they are mined, they are reduced by stripping off oxygen (hematite) or both oxygen and hydrogen (limonite) to produce taconite pellets, which are around 65% pure iron.

If you want to take a look at an active open pit iron mine, go to Google maps and type in Ishpeming, Michigan. Just southeast of town is a massive works.

Is it a scar upon the earth? Yes. Does it result in acidic waste ponds? Yes. But it is damn efficient and can be managed. Unless you want to live in an adobe world, it is a fact of modern life.

Yeah, I had expected by now that there would be a growing faction, either in the House, Senate, or both that would be calling on the White House to take whatever deal that the GOP was offering. That the House and Senate GOP would be far more united than they are and would have settled on some sort of joint terms to present as “reasonable.” I knew that Boehner and McConnell were virtually handcuffed by the Tea Party, but I never expected that to dissolve into the sort of sniping and insults that we’re seeing now.

Ashland County May Consider Banning Explosives Near Rocks With Asbestos

Ashland County Board Chairman Pete Russo says he’s getting lots of calls from citizens who are worried about asbestos and mesothelioma, a fatal lung cancer caused by airborne asbestos fibers. Recent reports by Northland College geoscience professor Tom Fitz and the Department of Natural Resources have found that asbestos fibers are in at least part of the ore body that Gogebic Taconite (GTAC) hopes to mine.

The DNR says it needs more information before they know if that ore body is dangerous, while Fitz calls the asbestos lethal.

Russo has called a special meeting of the Mining Impact Committee Wednesday, which will hear testimony from Fitz and the DNR. Then, he says, the committee will consider an ordinance which would ban using explosives on asbestos rock.

I’m not sure that Dems will blink at this point, I think that the Repubs by this point are well and truly fucked. Either they make a deal or they take the blame for default. With poll numbers having already crashed due to the shutdown, a default might well and truly wipe out any chance they have of regaining ground before next November. Meanwhile Senate Dems are now actually demanding that the sequester be slowly rolled back, instead of just accepting it as here to stay.

re: #171 ProTARDISLiberal

Much of this is true. China’s leadership is pretending like there’s nothing to worry about, though.

China has the 4-2-1 demographic problem now. Four grandparents, two parents, one child. With no public safety net for senior citizens in place, it’s that one kid who will need to support his elders — double that if he or she is married. Meanwhile, there is a serious imbalance between the number of men and women, as ProTARDISLiberal notes, meaning some men are going to be SOL in finding a wife (assuming he only wants previously unmarried girls in their 20s). There is also a danger that China will run out of resident factory workers, and may need to import workers from neighboring countries to continue to grow the manufacturing sector.

The Han are close to 90% of the population. The Tibetans and Uyghurs will all need to be like the Duggars to catch up.

China is investing heavily in Africa and the Pacific region, in a kind of neo-colonial fashion, offering technical advice, engineering expertise and generous loans in return for access to raw materials. But Chinese, in their typically arrogant fashion, are running roughshod over the locals, winning friends only among the people getting rich off their investments.

The environmental problems (and food safety issues) are also big worries. But the leadership seems to ignore the growing storm, at least in public.

Idon’t wanna sound alarmist, but this surplus of males means that China could, at least theoretically, start a war, lose tens of millions of soldiers and, regardless of outcome, still actually come out ahead demographically…

Hey gang…fuck this place is expensive. Cheapest table is $25 minimum. Where the fuck do they find people who can play $50 and $100 minimum bets and have a good time doing it? I bought in for $200 at a blackjack table with my mom (who dropped $300 like it wasn’t there to start with) and held my own for a while, but the rule of a casino is still in force - the longer you stay, the more their chances of fucking you with a hot poker and no grease gets…and fuck they did.

My saving grace was a hot craps table…came back to the room about $44 under what I started with (counting the extra $200 I pulled from the ATM).

Interesting city - I think my best description of being here would be this: Perfectly choreographed chaos. They keep you off balance on purpose - even doing something like taking a piss…I mean, how do you fuck up something as simple as holding your dick, taking a piss, zipping up, and washing your hands…well, surprise, surprise! There’s a fucking app for that! You go to the sink to wash your hands and some woman is putting anti-bacterial foam on your hands while you turn on the water at the sink…so yeah, you give her a dollar (a filthy dollar, mind you) after you’ve sterilized your hands.

Ashland County May Consider Banning Explosives Near Rocks With Asbestos

That’s a reasonable reaction. Removing overburden from an iron bearing ore body should be done gently, without explosives, especially if it contains asbestos bearing minerals.

The three most dangerous asbestos bearing minerals are amosite, crocidolite and chrysotile. There is no quantifiable safe exposure level to these minerals in air.

In other words words, a single exposure to these fibers could be deadly.

Yeah, but a $15 minimum crap table means you’ve got at least $60-80 out there at a time, covering the 6, 8, odds on the pass line, and the hard ways.

Still, it was a fun two hours, and I pulled back about $400 that I’d lost earlier.

Whatever problems the 4-2-1 may cause, it’s nothing compared to the food shortages they would have had if they hadn’t put themselves in this box. As for lack of workers and wives… I’m sure North Korea will be happy to send sell them as many as they want. No matter how crappy the Chinese want to treat those Koreans, the Koreans will still find it a huge step up from the camps they were sold from.

The Dems have seemingly found their spines, and the R’s are hating life.

Sounds like what is at issue is that the Dems don’t want to lock in the sequestration cuts plus near-Ryan spending levels for a whole year. A year long clean CR is effectively a year budget at those levels. They want regular order budget negotiations. They are willing to lock them in for a shorter duration to break the impasse, which I’m guessing is where this is going (3mos “clean” CR or something along those lines).

My first question would be: Why was Scott’s 15 yr old daughter out at 1:30 in the morning, coming from a club? And 2 carloads of teenaged—maybe some middle schoolers—out in the middle of the night getting in cat fights and threatening each other? WTF?

Call me old-fashioned, but that “club” ought to be in a shitload of trouble. And if your 15 yr old is out that late club-hopping, you ought to be in trouble, too, by allowing your underaged kid to frequent a place where alcohol is served and would be available to her.

I can follow the same line of “logic” that Rutherford presented in this case, too, in getting this killer off.

Sounds as though the Scott girl needed as much protection from her father as she did anyone else.

I’m really surprised that this case, presented as one of “gallantry” (from a southern point of view) was allowed to come to this result, but you have to understand it in that context. Scott was protecting his property (his daughter) in that sense more than any other, transferring any “danger” from her to himself, thus giving him the impetus and right to shoot first and ask questions later. This kind of autocratic flim-flam, usually reserved for the “higher born”, is seen as a special kind of “democracy” for the hoi polloi because it eliminates the need for law enforcement and courts—let ‘em kill each other off so we don’t have to.

The tattoo created on Wilson’s child was made from ink mixed with human ashes, according to the police affidavit. Memorial tattoos made with ashes get mixed reviews from tattoo artists, some of whom will not do them at all. According to e-how.com injecting ashes into the body as part of a tattoo has risks including having the body reject the ink resulting in a messed up design, or worse causing infection and scarring.

Assuming the ashes came from an urn containing a cremated relative, sure. Wouldn’t be that hard to come by. Just scoop whatever is needed out of the urn. Still, there are damn good reasons why most tattoo artists won’t use ashes in a tattoo.

That whole story is fucked up. I feel horrible for that kid being raised in that kind of environment. The tattoo is the least of it. Hell, I have tattoos. The drugs are the bigger problem.

I’ve only known one person who liked anchovies on pizza. I remember being at his house with some other friends and he ordered three pizzas for people to eat. One was a regular pepperoni pizza, one was cheese, and the third was an anchovy pizza.

50 yrs ago, anchovies were pretty popular on pizza, but tastes change. I always thought they were too salty; pepperoni started replacing the fish, even though its sodium content is sky-high, too.

A good dough thin crust, sauce w/enough basil, and plenty of mozzarella cheese are the only real requirements for pizza. Everything else are add-ons or tweaks, anyway.

The first time I saw Meem, which was also my first day at work at a sweatshop, she was having a good day despite the wretched heat. She sat cross-legged on the concrete floor, a tiny, frail figure among piles of collars, cuffs and other parts of unstitched shirts.
She had a pair of cutters in her hands, much like eyebrow tweezers, and she was trimming threads from a navy collar. She cleared one collar after another of threads until the big pile, which had been bigger than her, was no more. It took her all morning and she didn’t look up much, did not join any conversation. When it was done, she took a few gulps of water from a scrunched bottle, walked around for a bit, her little hands rubbing her back, and went back to trimming threads — this time, from navy cuffs.
She did that from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., except for an hourlong lunch break.

I would like to quote Thomas Edmund Dewey:

“We have in our party some fine, high-minded patriotic people who honestly oppose farm price supports, unemployment insurance, old age benefits, slum clearance, and other social programs…these people believe in a laissez-faire society and look back wistfully to the miscalled ‘good old days’ of the nineteenth century…if such efforts to turn back the clock are actually pursued, you can bury the Republican Party as the deadest pigeon in the country.”

re: #358 Sol Berdinowitz

I think the idea was for her to simply stand up next to McCain, look beautiful and serve as a blank screen onto which Americans could project their image of what an ideal candidate should be.

But that approach depended on her keeping her mouth shut…

She has no self-awareness. Doesn’t realize that she’s really uninformed, uneducated, and genuinely stupid, and has spawned hundreds of others like herself. In that, she was successful.

Even when you’re intelligent, that’s not enough, but if you’re intelligent, you know that. You must know that there are things you don’t know, things you should learn about before you give an opinion. Too many people out there who don’t practice this. It’s just more plain ignorance.

There are people who skate by in life this way—she’s up there at the top of the list.

362 Sol Berdinowitz  Sun, Oct 13, 2013 6:01:10am

Yunno, that all aside, she was governor of a state with a ppopulation equal to that of Louisville, KY. And although it is the largest state in the union, near 3/4th of it is Federal or tribal land,

So on top of it all, she was simply underqualified for the office and nobody had the nerve to call her or the party out on that.

Low-budget aliens. This is a TV show, not a Hollywood mega-blockbuster. At least the TNG Klingons were marginally more alien-looking than the TOS Klingons.

I’ve enjoyed watching every Trek series, even Enterprise. But I could spend hours — weeks even — pointing out all the silliness in those shows.

I’ve been watching Arrow, and I can do the same thing. F’r’instance, in one episode Oliver Queen has Felicity Smoak trace, using her hacker-fu, the manufacturer of a special kind of arrow found at a crime scene, which leads (naturally) to the perp. So, how come no one can do the same thing with the hundreds of arrows he’s been leaving around all over Starling City?

Maybe he just has them custom made in China. Ahem.

C: It’s cool your computer still somehow work after shorting out and killing people, but it’s pretty easy to make electrical circuits not overload. It’s called a circuit breaker and it was invented in 1879.

Almost ironically, a lot of what I’d call ‘true’ science fiction shows take place mostly in the present. Continuum, a really great show about oppressive states, terrorism, etc. is mostly set in the present day, with time-travelers, and uses the metaphor of time travel to think about historical inevitability, the effects of choices, and most of the use of technology is about human interaction with technology and with the system necessary to create it; the ‘hero’ of the show is sent backwards in time with some equipment, but she has to learn not to rely on it.

I generally agree with that but the Dr. Who reboot changed my mind a bit on soft science fiction. They did a brilliant job updating the series while keeping much of the the soft sci fi and campy elements. They really did a brilliant job. The problem with the Star Trek reboots is they tried but never really updated into serious/Asimov style sci fi but never gave up the cheesy, simplistic morality story lines. Made a bit worse by taking itself a bit too seriously. Another thing Dr. Who got right was, although each episode is self contained, there is an overall story arch. The characters and universe does change and evolve over time. In Star Treck, after each epic, massively important one hour episode the characters and universe all return to where they started. Nothing ever changes.

One thing about the Star Trek universe is that replicator technology has essentially done away with the requirement for work, and people only have to do what they want to do, and everyone has whatever they need.

But that’s not the direction we’re headed in. As automation has reduced the need for manual labor in manufacturing, rather than greater equality, we’ve gotten greater INequality. Making all the stuff everybody can afford to buy takes fewer people than need jobs to pay for it, and instead of cutting hours progressively so that there’s work for everyone who wants/needs to work, we just cut wages and increase the hours of those with jobs so that we don’t have to hire more. And then we piss on those who can’t find a job.

457 piratedan  Sun, Oct 13, 2013 8:00:10am

guess it all depends on your brand of science fiction…

you have what could considered to be the space opera genre which includes Stark Trek (and its many incarnations), Babylon 5, Farcscape etc

You have the alternate history genre Time Tunnel, Quantum Leap, Journeyman, Sliders etc

Then you have the window dressing shows, where they are regular dramas, using science fiction as their schtick, i.e. Lost In Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

Then the outliers: Space 1999, U.F.O., The Invaders

myself…I enjoyed some of each to be honest, shows that have engaging characters, that entertain, occasionally thought provoking

There was one time I REALLY thought Worf had the best idea. In “I, Borg” when they first discover the crash site they are trying to decide what to do with the only badly wounded survivor. Worf suggests killing it to make it appear he died in the crash along with the others and make sure there’s no evidence the Enterprise was ever there.

Considering the major threat the Borg presented, this would have been a very smart move. Of course, you wouldn’t have an episode if that happened so obviously Worf was denied.

There was one episode of TOS, I think it was 3rd Season, where there was a race of people who’d done something that speeded up their metabolisms so that they moved real fast. The beautiful (of course) female leader of these people gives Kirk some of the stuff, so he speeds up. And Kirk being Kirk, nails her. Of course, they don’t explicitly SAY that. No, he pulls her into his arms and roughly kisses her. Then they cut to commercial.

After the commercial, she’s standing at the mirror coming her hair, and Kirk is sitting on the edge of the bed, pulling on his boot. Subtle!

This of course neglected to consider that friction increases as speed increases. I suspect the answer to “Do you smoke after sex?” would have been, “Yes!” that time.

Morning all. Actually, a very good morning to all of you!

We got over two months of rain last night.

I have just over 6” in the rain gauge this morning. And the really good news is that we finally got some rain to the west of us:

radar.weather.gov

That 4” blob over the Pedernales River basin should translate to north of 100,000 acre feet in Lake Travis. That’s another month of drinking water. Good.

In addition, that 6-9” rain bomb over South Austin (Yo!) is going to move a huge slug of fresh water down to Matagorda Bay, which sorely needs it. Way too saline right now.

The weather gods smiled upon us.

Twilight Zone did a remarkable job merely suggesting things, rather than requiring a special effect. And ultimately, the stories were about people and their reactions to the extraordinary, rather than the extraordinary itself.

I agree, yeah there would be a clunker or two, rarely is there a show that hits it out of the park consistently, and considering the anthology makeup of the show, it was exceptional for dealing with concepts of death, discovery, fear, anxiety and exploring those concepts as well as prejudice, fairness and challenging our preconceived notions of what is beauty, just and necessary.

I should note that Moffat is the better showrunner to Davies. And the fact that it is now apparent the Moffat does play a long game.

His big thing, which has been asking who the Doctor is, was first brought up during The Girl in the Fireplace. That was in Series 2, and the episode happened 7 years ago.

This is why I think the person who gave Clara the helpline to the Doctor is Sally Sparrow.

The only thing that worries me about the 50th is the character of Rose Tyler. She was an extremely selfish and jealous character that is not all that bright.

Unfortunately, when I went to Norman last month, I met people who said Rose Tyler is an example of Feminism. I died a bit inside. Also, they fit the stereotype of being a bunch of unthinking teeny-boppers, and were unfortunately big fans of slash stuff.

Stalingrad. A movie that did not pull punches. This is typical of the battle scenes. They really worked hard to keep it accurate. Note: Do not watch if you’ve got a weak stomach.
