New WaPo/ABC Poll: 74% of Americans Disapprove of GOP Shutdown Craziness

Not winning
Poll • Views: 55,334

The new Washington Post-ABC News poll provides more astonishing evidence of exactly how self-destructive the House Republicans’ shutdown games have been, as an amazing 74 percent of Americans disapprove of these clowns.

And more than that, the poll shows that there’s a kind of ideological war going on within the Republican Party, as the remaining sane members are repelled by the tactics of the Tea Party crackpots.

An ideological split within the GOP accounts for the soft ratings for Republicans among their own party members. Some 63 percent of Republicans who describe themselves as “very conservative” approve of their members of Congress, using two weeks of combined polls. But approval falls below half among Republicans who are just “somewhat conservative,” with 48 percent approving and 49 percent disapproving.

The few Republicans who identify as moderate or liberal disapprove on balance by 53 percent to 42 percent approval of their own party, using combined data from two weeks of interviews.

If you unskew the pool, you’ll see that the GOP is on the verge of being raised into the ranks of the immortals, to guide our country into glory for all eternity.

Please proceed GOP:

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds nearly three quarters of Americans disapprove of the way Republicans in Congress are handling negotiations over the budget (74 percent), up from 63 percent since the start of the shutdown after hitting 70 percent last week.

I think another rally will turn things around for you, bring moar rebel flags!

21%… fully a fifth of the 27%’ers think the GOP is handling this badly.

Think about that. This is the crowd that is willing to blame Obama for Katrina, and they think the GOP has fucked this pooch.

As a momentary break from the crazy (since I’m sure it will keep us well supplied all day), we discovered that my husband’s favorite yakitori place in Japan suffered damage in the 2011 earthquake and the building had to be torn down and replaced. We had eaten there in November of 2011 (before they discovered the damage) and it was charming - originally built in the 60s, and very much untouched by time in a lot of ways. The new building looks to have much less of the charm than the original did, but we’ll probably still go by anyway.

re: #47 Vicious Babushka

Reorganize and simplify the DHS. Still too much graft and focus on security theater, while security is still full of holes.

Eliminating DoD programs that Congress wants but which DoD doesn’t want - like a tank refurb program that keeps jobs going, but rebuilds Abrams tanks that the Army is looking to replace with a new generation vehicle that is lighter and more mobile.

End farm subsidies to rich, close loopholes for the rich.

Lower the corporate income tax rate, but broaden the tax base to eliminate situations where companies like GE pay a lower rate than other companies because their tax departments are able to take advantage of legal loopholes. Simplification would improve tax collection and eliminate situations where the IRS has to make decisions that Congress punted on (so that Congress could then attack the IRS for having to make them - see the nonsensical Tea Party nonprofit filings mess).

Eliminate program that turns food to fuel - ethanol (and all those subsidies).

Eliminate tariffs on sugar.

re: #61 Carlos Danger

Early February? Well, that is going to mess with the primaries.

That’s the point. The Democrats intend to extend the debt ceiling for as long as possible, and putting it up against the primaries would increase pressure on GOP to not play around with it again, since they’d done so well this round.

The GOP leadership might take that deal, if only to bludgeon the TP into line - that if they want to try this nonsense again, the leadership will go off on them.

But the way I’m reading how this framework is coming together is that they’re going to do just enough to get the so-called 20 GOP moderates cover so that they could vote on a clean bill in the House once Boehner drops the Hastert rule and gets it through with Democratic party support.

In other words, everything is contingent on Boehner doing what he needs to bring this to a floor vote.

I’ve told this story before, but 30 or so odd-years (and some have been very odd) ago when I was in the Navy Reserve, I had my two weeks annual duty training in Newport, RI.

Part of my important work in doing my own little part to keep this country safe from its enemies was working inventory.

One day all I did was unwrap screws. I would remove them from their sealed packages, and then put them in the appropriate jar in the screwbox.

Each screw came in its own package, and each screw cost $9.

So I’d get rid of no-bid contracts.

OT: A little while ago, I took a quick swing by the Million Vets March FB page. They put up a screenshot of a spreadsheet showing their modest expenses and asking for donations.

People immediately objected—one even said she was now questioning the entire movement. The reason? Because it was tainted with the vileness that is Starbucks. Seriously? You love & support our vets, but if one of the people in charge likes Starbucks, then that’s a deal breaker?

Medical Device Tax Debate Punted To Round Two
A Republican source told The Huffington Post that changes to Obamacare’s tax on medical devices will not be in the final debt ceiling/CR deal being constructed by the Senate. But there will be a pledge, however informal, to consider that issue when the two sides reprise this debate when the next continuing resolution to fund the government expires on Jan. 15, 2014.

“The package does not include a delay or repeal of the medical device tax, but some assurance would be given by both sides that the issue will remain on the table for Round 2 of negotiations,” the source said.

These documents show that at the time (Segarra) left the employ of the New York Fed, she purloined property of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System,” Gross wrote, citing Fed rules that prohibit disclosing supervisory information without prior approval of the Fed.

Gross argues that the Fed’s obligation to keep bank supervisory records secret outweigh the public’s right to know. “The incantation of a ‘public right to know’ cannot ever be a license to discharged employees that they may violate

Federal law simply by filing a complaint in Federal court,” Gross wrote.

Segarra and her lawyer could not be reached for comment.

While Abrams considers her decision, Segarra’s lawsuit and appended documents have been removed from Pacer, the online records system for federal courts. The complaint and related documents are available via links in ProPublica’s story and have been published elsewhere online.

Gross states in his letter that Segarra previously made a $7 million settlement offer. The Fed rejected it.

The New York Fed has historically been one of the most opaque financial regulators and maintains that it is not subject to the Freedom of Information Act because it is not a public agency.

Segarra made a $7M settlement offer and the Fed rejected it —????

WTF?

Under new powers granted to it by Congress, the Federal Reserve System carries responsibility for ensuring that the nation’s most complex financial institutions are not posing a systemic threat to the world economy.

Somehow, I am not comforted.

Victim’s House Burned Down After She Accuses Football Star Of Rape

Days after the incident became public knowledge, students at the high school began attacking Daisy and her family. On social media, fellow Maryville students began threatening Daisy, tweeting that she would “get whats comin.” Daisy’s older brother Charlie, who was himself an athlete for Maryville, was booed by his own classmates during a wrestling meet. Her mother, a veterinarian, was fired from her job two weeks after the incident without so much as an explanation, only later learning that her boss feared that her presence “was putting stress” on her other employees.

Meanwhile, members of the community rallied behind Barnett and the other perpetrators. In March, just over two months after the alleged rape took place, the most serious charges of sexual assault and sexual exploitation of a minor was dropped without an explanation.

Daisy’s family moved away to avoid the threats and harassment they faced since her story first came to light. But the trouble didn’t end. Six months ago, their old house burned down mysteriously.

Reminds me of some of the cases I’ver heard about in our community. Some immigrants and gangs use rape as revenge. Very Tribal or Primitive (I know there is a specific term, but can’t recall it)

China, which is America’s largest creditor with $1.28 trillion in U.S. treasuries, went as far as calling for a new world order — a “de-Americanized” model.

“World leaders are saying, ‘Get on with it and get this resolved. It’s not just about you,’” Mike Kendall, executive director of JBWere, a private wealth management firm in Australia and New Zealand, told The Age of Melbourne.

Jonathan Cohn at The New Republic explains why Democrats won’t give in. “Allowing Republicans to succeed, [Democrats] say, would be even worse than shuttering the government or allowing a default — even though the former has been plenty bad and the latter would be even worse,” explains Cohn. And “so far, nothing Republicans have suggested” would be a deal Democrats would make without the threat of default or shutdown. Cohn concludes, “Democratic aides I interviewed over the weekend kept stressing one thing: Democrats won’t make a swap that doesn’t make sense on its own terms.” Greg Sargent, a politics writer at the Washington Post, tweets, “Here’s @citizencohn with good case for how Ds are using this crisis to restore sane governing norms.”

“Excited about performance tomorrow think I can really do this. Weird how its so much more intimidating with people watching, like I’m seeing myself through their eyes.”

Followed by:

“Oh my god what if there’s a hot girl there and she looks at me? What the hell do I do then?”

I remember being that age, when just being looked at by a member of the opposite sex prompted an existential crisis.

Essentially, the Davies/10 fans are saying how Moffat is evil and sexist, and how the 10th Doctor was best and Rose the best companion (I think that is what they say), and the show focuses too much on time.

The Moffat/11 fans, including me, point out how the writing under Davies had a history of being weak or plain old bad, a history of wierd gimmicks to pull people in like Jonathan Nathan Turner tried, a history of ignoring Classic Who, and that Rose was very selfish and self centered companion.

Of course, I end up being an ardent defender of Moffat, because it was Series 7.5 that pulled me out of a very dark depression.

We’ve been in so many caves on family vacations I can’t remember them all. There was one in some National Park you took an elevator to. No bugs nothing because we were so far in. Pitch dark when the ranger turned the lights off. Very, very kewl.

FYI Drive-by:

LinkedIn Preps ‘Block User’ Capability

When Anna Rihtar began her campaign for LinkedIn to add a block user feature, she was at the beginning of her sales career — and in the middle of an ongoing stalking nightmare. Sadly, she was far from alone.

Rihtar worked with Change.org to bolster her earlier efforts and began a LinkedIn Privacy/Blocking Petition group on the business-oriented social media site (membership required). When I first wrote about her efforts, many were surprised that LinkedIn didn’t already include this capability, which is readily available on many other social networks. All that changed recently when LinkedIn finally agreed to begin working on a block user feature.

Writing in a forum on the LinkedIn privacy group, Paul Rockwell, the company’s head of trust and safety, told members that LinkedIn is building a block user feature. Rockwell also pointed participants to the redesigned Safety Center and reminded them about flagging or reporting inappropriate or threatening behavior.

The feature is not out yet, and Rockwell didn’t give an estimated timeframe. That left some skeptics among the group’s approximately 80 members — many of whom say they have been stalked online. […]

One more drive-by:

Now anyone can find you on Facebook

It may have been a long time coming, but those hidden in plain sight on Facebook are in for a rude awakening in the weeks ahead.

The social network said Thursday that it is, as promised 10 months ago, killing off a privacy setting that allowed members to prevent themselves from appearing in search results. Facebook first put the setting, called “Who can look up your Timeline by name?,” on life support in December of last year, removing it for people who weren’t using it. Now, it’s ready to finish off the job.

Simply put, the setting let people hide their Timelines — aka profiles — from public view. Members could use it to control if they could be found, and by whom, when other people typed their name into the Facebook search bar.

“For the small percentage of people still using the setting, they will see reminders about it being removed in the coming weeks,” Facebook announced in a blog post on the change. “Whether you’ve been using the setting or not, the best way to control what people can find about you on Facebook is to choose who can see the individual things you share.” […]

They seem to have taken it as a given that a major and painful concession on the part of Congressional Democrats, made to avoid the drawn-out shutdown we’ve endured, was something that Republicans were somehow entitled to from the beginning.

whoops, sorry GOP, we were under the impression that these were “negotiations” not a shakedown, please proceed.

These “negotiations” have been a farce up until last week.

Democrats said “We’re not only willing to go against our base and agree to keep the sequester in place, we’re willing to allow you to cut back $19 billion of the defense cuts set for next year, with the understanding that this will be all we agree to to make this deal work.”

Republicans replied “You’re not ‘agreeing’ to shit, we’re making you accept these cuts and tacking on the $19 billion that our defense hawks want back, while you agree to more demands to make this deal work.”

And the press presented it as “Democrats refuse to negotiate! This is totally unprecedented!!”

Sadly, this happens all over. Happened to my grandson when he mistakenly gave an inside guy’s order to someone in the drive through and admitted his mistake, and advised the man that his order was being made up again—the guy became so infuriated he shoved a tray into a female co-worker behind the counter (they thought he was coming over it) and threatened my g-son. It took only half a minute to get the guy’s order re-done, but he didn’t want to even wait that long. My grandson had to go down to the magistrate’s office to give a report on the incident. He says quite a few customers are rude, menacing, use foul language (esp in the drive through) and even throw food back at workers. The ones who get it worse are at night when they have to put up with all the drunks and such. Luckily, he’s been working the day shift, so it’s not as bad. Still, I worry about his, and the others’ safety, since I’ve come to know a lot of the workers up there (I send them cookies and brownies all the time) and they come here to visit as well.
