Box Office Disaster: Benedict Cumberbatch’s ‘The Fifth Estate’ Bombs

Wow, who could have guessed the wikileaks movie would be as much a dud as most of their leaks?

The Fifth Estate bombed in its opening weekend with a truly awful $1.7 million from 1,769 theaters, making it the worst debut for a film opening in at least 1,500 theaters this year. (Sorry, Paranoia!) The film, which cost DreamWorks a reported $26 million to produce, earned tepid reviews from critics and could only manage an anemic $969 location average.

Just how bad is that? Well, let’s put this in perspective. Notorious stinker Movie 43 grossed $4.8 million in its opening weekend in January, almost three times as much as The Fifth Estate. Getaway, the ludicrously awful Ethan Hawke/Selena Gomez thriller drove away with $4.5 million in August. Heck, this weekend’s Arnold Schwarznegger/Sylvester Stallone action flick Escape Plan bombed this weekend with $9.8 million — and that’s still almost six times more money than The Fifth Estate made!

I was jazzed by the trailer because Cumberbatch and picked up the book from the library. Terrible book by a whiny former Assange cultist. If Cumberbatch wasn’t in the film it would never have even cracked one million. A real waste of a terrific actor.

The thing is, the largest movie audience is probably 35 and under. They just do not care. They post their lives on facebook, smartphones, instagram, linkedin etc…They dont have great expectations of privacy and the younger ones for the most part don’t care about all these state secrets. It is a big bore for them.
They care more about the cost of education and getting a decent job.

Charles you might have a really good idea with what you face here.

I don’t know about most challenging ever… I don’t have enough technical details about it to really judge that. But it’s definitely a very complex task, just looking at what it’s supposed to do.

The Obama admin definitely screwed up the launch; my impression is the developers didn’t do enough (or any?) stress testing under high server loads. Seems like the scheduling was way too optimistic given the scale of the project.

I can’t speak for the federal website, but Kentucky’s went down for about 90 minutes that first morning because of traffic overload. But that got remedied fairly quickly.
Could be that Kentucky had already been working on our own exchange for months. So far, the only problem I’ve heard about was that server overload the first morning. Everyone I know who has visited (except for that brief time) haven’t had any problems.

Having seen the movie at the Toronto Film Fest, it’s actually not bad. Cumberbatch is fantastic, and it neither lionizes Assange nor demonizes him (although ending the movie before it has to deal with the sexual assault accusations certainly helps in that regard).

The Hollywoodized portrayal of all the computer stuff is typically crap though, and barely better than the ridiculous nonsense in Hackers. And if you don’t already care at least a little bit about the subject matter, there’s absolutely nothing there to hook in the random movie watcher. A wide release was a huge, huge mistake - they would have been far better off doing the standard award-season limited release and tried to get some buzz and noms for Cumberbatch’s performance they could build the the marketing around.

Basically, the fact that it’s bombing is on the studio, not the film.

Any “always online” game these days should come with a proviso on the box that says “May be unplayable for its first week.” Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 also were beset with server issues. And if you play any sort of MMORPG, then you get used to the regular server outages. STO, for example, seemed for awhile like it went down every Sunday for one server-related issue or another.

Where I work that is the new normal. Little to no real world testing. Every IT project I’ve been on for years now it’s like no one has ever worked in IT before and everything is being done for the first time, again somehow.

Personally I think it has to do with when businesses decided you don’t need people with IT backgrounds to manage IT projects.

Thing to keep in mind about the faults in the Healthcare.Gov rollout is that there’s still six months before actually signing up starts to matter. So in six months time, if the major issues are worked out, then a bad roll-out will be a minor issue.

For the majority of poorer people who will qualify for a premium credit and cost sharing, the shopping would be meaningless and perhaps a turn-off. The raw monthly bites for many plans are several times the real costs. The final calculation requires an income entry.

My sister in Florida was able to create an account for herself before the site crashed and burned down there the first morning.
She was relieved to have been able to get that far and was willing to wait for the dust settled before she started to shop.

The only people who actually care about this movie are the dudebros. Young people seem to want zombies and more idiocy. And older people who might actually know a little something about Assange from reading about Snowden are pissed off that these guys would hack and steal, so they’re not going to put money into that movie to “reward” JA, and most have never heard of Cumberbatch (who?) anyway, so he’s not even a draw for them.

And the dudebros are just complaining about its portrayal of JA, so we know they’re the ones going to see it.

A basic kitchenaid will do the job.

A basic kitchenaid is fine depending on the amount of dough. If you’re using 4 cups of flour or less you should be fine with a basic kitchenaid.

However if you want to make a larger dough using more flour, a kitchenaid will overheat and the newer models (which are crap compared to the old Hobarts) will just shut down.

Since I make bread dough using an entire 5-lb bag of flour, I had to make two batches in the old Kitchenaid, and even then I put a bag of ice cubes on the motor to keep it from overheating.

The Electrolux can easily handle 5 lbs. of flour.

I still use the Kitchenaid for cake batter, muffins, and small batch dough, and a Cuisinart for pie crust.

Watched Knute Rockne, All American this afternoon on AMC. Believe it or not, I had never seen it before, at least not the whole thing. The famous scene with Ronald Reagan as George “the Gipper” Gipp is completely overshadowed by Pat O’Brien’s inspired performance in the title role. Reagan is only on screen a couple of minutes, though it is a very good performance. I may be a little more nerdy than most but I like the way he presents archaeology most of the time. Not everything he does is gold but a good amount is worth seeing.

If the clams don’t turn out to be quite as good as you remember try the smoked baby oysters next time. They melt in your mouth and the taste isn’t all that much different.

Clams are usually used for soup or stews or other dishes where they are cooked for awhile to soften them up. 15-20 minutes in the oven at 400-425 for a pizza just isn’t going to do that.

Still if clams are what you remember liking then by all means try them once, if it doesn’t turn out quite like you remember then I’m just offering the obvious alternative.

Besides having a few tins of smoked baby oysters around the house is a good thing, ever try some with cream cheese and Dijon mustard on toast?

How do I know my Skyrim build is now overpowered? I’m sitting here, just letting a Frost Troll bash at my shield and my health bar is barely flickering. Great way to power level the Block skill, however.

Tried to install buildcaft today. Almost impossible overly complex procedure not helped at all by Windows 8 confusing programs for Apps and hiding them somewhere in some secret app location unknown to humans. I give up, I’ll just play vanilla Minecraft and like it.

All you really need to know is that the same folks who bring you the super overpriced Monster cables are behind these. They are actually decent headphones, but they are priced like great headphones.

Monster and Dr, Dre had a contract dispute that Dr. Dre surprisingly won, the headphones are now built by cell phone giant HTC.

hmm but you know of course that the branding is all important in teenage land

i only hope he’s not disappointed that i bought the previous generation as available on the amazon for $200 instead of the brand spanking new super duper updated too cool model at $300

Watched Knute Rockne, All American this afternoon on AMC. Believe it or not, I had never seen it before, at least not the whole thing. The famous scene with Ronald Reagan as George “the Gipper” Gipp is completely overshadowed by Pat O’Brien’s inspired performance in the title role. Reagan is only on screen a couple of minutes, though it is a very good performance. Even so, it is interesting that this became his signature role, while all his leading man appearances are nearly forgotten.

Yes, amazing that a respectable character role could overshadow this stellar performance.

That sensationalistic British rag article was so void of content that I couldn’t find what it supposedly is referencing, but thanks to government funded medical websites I was able to track down this new publication that I think sparked it:

A canonical to non-canonical Wnt signalling switch in haematopoietic stem-cell ageing

Many organs with a high cell turnover (for example, skin, intestine and blood) are composed of short-lived cells that require continuous replenishment by somatic stem cells1, 2. Ageing results in the inability of these tissues to maintain homeostasis and it is believed that somatic stem-cell ageing is one underlying cause of tissue attrition with age or age-related diseases. Ageing of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) is associated with impaired haematopoiesis in the elderly3, 4, 5, 6. Despite a large amount of data describing the decline of HSC function on ageing, the molecular mechanisms of this process remain largely unknown, which precludes rational approaches to attenuate stem-cell ageing. Here we report an unexpected shift from canonical to non-canonical Wnt signalling in mice due to elevated expression of Wnt5a in aged HSCs, which causes stem-cell ageing. Wnt5a treatment of young HSCs induces ageing-associated stem-cell apolarity, reduction of regenerative capacity and an ageing-like myeloid–lymphoid differentiation skewing via activation of the small Rho GTPase Cdc42. Conversely, Wnt5a haploinsufficiency attenuates HSC ageing, whereas stem-cell-intrinsic reduction of Wnt5a expression results in functionally rejuvenated aged HSCs. Our data demonstrate a critical role for stem-cell-intrinsic non-canonical Wnt5a signalling in HSC ageing.

It’s a big leap from that to the Mirror’s headline.

Seriously I have told all my nieces and nephews that if they want a surefire way to live extremely comfortably then they should study to become a Otologist or neurotologist. This is because we are raising an entire generation that will almost all have hearing impairment before they are 40 thanks to “beat box” and “dubstep” style music played at over a 100 decibels.

Download and install Start 8 and it will give you access to all your programs again.

Godawful 2004 film Taxi is playing on HBO this week. It was so bad I recall the producers decided to skip town for a few weeks until the cloud of shame dissipated. It had about the same budget as 5th Estate but did much, much better at the box office taking in over $12M from 3001 theaters in the USA on its first weekend.

So it seems that Julian Assange emailed Benedict Cumberbatch to ask him to not to participate in the film. But he did it anyway. That’s just all kinds of sorry.
