Tech Note: LGF Pages Bookmarklet Updated - Popup Blockers Sidestepped

No more need to turn off popup blocking

There’s a new version of the LGF Pages posting bookmarklet tonight with a very nice new feature: you no longer need to turn off popup blocking in your browser’s settings in order to use the bookmarklet.

This is probably the most common cause of confusion for new LGF users who want to use the “Create a Page” feature to post their own articles, because most of the popular web browsers come out of the box with popup windows blocked, by default, and in some browsers it isn’t very easy to find the settings you need to change. So I’m really pleased to find a solution that lets the “Create a Page” bookmarklet work without having to change any settings. The Internet is confusing enough already.

It’s also nice because now you can turn popup blocking back on (if you previously disabled it to use the bookmarklet) and enjoy a world mostly free of advertising popups.

To install the new version, just right click on the current one in your browser’s bookmarks bar and delete it (if you previously installed it), then drag that big “Create a Page” button to the bookmarks bar in its place.

The technical details of this change, for those interested: I learned something new today, by Googling for “bypass popup blocking” — I discovered that browser popup blockers generally already have a workaround built in. If the popup window is the direct result of a user action, typically a mouse click or tap on a touchscreen, popup blockers will allow the window to be opened. No problem, go right ahead sir, we know you, you’re the guy who clicked.

But if the Javascript code is trying to open a popup window in an indirect or deferred way, it will be blocked. By “indirect,” we can mean inside a timer routine, or in the case of the LGF Pages posting bookmarklet, in the callback function of an Ajax call.

Once I grokked this essential fact about popup blockers, the solution was obvious — open the popup window right away (with a “loading” message) in the direct context of the click, and save that window’s handle. Then instead of using window.open in the callback function, just set the location.href property of the new popup window, to reload the correct page with all of the LGF Pages posting tools ready to go.

(This process happens so fast you may not even see the “Loading…” message when the window first opens.)

Here’s the actual “Create a Page” bookmarklet code in editable form before it’s all scrunched down and transmogrified into the bookmarklet you install.

(function() {
	var postPage = function() {
		var api = 'http://littlegreenfootballs.com/api/0.2/postRegex.json',
			opts = {
				url: api
			},
			browser = navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase(),
			ff = browser.match(/firefox\/(.*)$/);
		if (ff && ff.length > 1 && ff[1] < 21) {
			opts = {
				url:			api + 'p',
				jsonpCallback:	'lgf_api',
				dataType:		'jsonp'
			};
		}
		jQuery.ajax(opts).done(function(lgf) {
			var esc = function(s) {
					return escape(s).replace(/\+/ig, '%252B');
				},
				ob,
				v = '1.0.6',
				f = a = q = w = '',
				u = esc(location.href),
				d = document,
				t = esc(d.title),
				s = esc((d.selection) ? d.selection.createRange().text : d.getSelection());
			if (u.match(/www\.npr\.org/i)) {
				ob = jQuery('a.download');
				if (ob.length) {
					a = esc(ob.eq(0).attr('href').split('?')[0]);
				}
			} else if (u.match(/www\.rightwingwatch\.org/i)) {
				ob = jQuery('#content-area object embed');
				if (ob.length) {
					if (ob.eq(0).attr('src').match(/www\.youtube\.com\/v\//i)) {
						f = 'https://www.youtube.com/embed/' + ob.eq(0).attr('src').split('?')[0].split('/')[4];
					}
				} else {
					ob = jQuery('#content-area iframe');
					if (ob.length) {
						f = ob.eq(0).attr('src');
						if (f.substring(0, 2) == '//') {
							f = 'http:' + f;
						}
					}
				}
			}
			if (f == '' && lgf !== undefined) {
				ob = jQuery('iframe').filter(function() {
					return this.src.match(RegExp(lgf.regex.embed, 'i'));
				});
				if (ob.length && !u.match(RegExp(lgf.regex.sites, 'i'))) {
					f = esc(ob.eq(0).attr('src'));
				}
			}
			q = (
				'u=' + u +
				'&t=' + t +
				'&f=' + f +
				'&a=' + a +
				'&s=' + s +
				'&v=' + v
			);
			popup.location.href = 'http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/lgf-postpage.php?' + q;
		});
	},
	jqVersion = '1.9.1',
	d = document,
	popup = window.open('http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/lgf-postpage.php?loading', '_blank', 'width=670,height=820,scrollbars=1,status=1,menubar=1,location=1,resizable=1');
	if (window.jQuery === undefined || window.jQuery.fn.jquery < jqVersion) {
		var done = false, s = d.createElement('script');
		s.src = '//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/' + jqVersion + '/jquery.min.js';
		s.onload = s.onreadystatechange = function(){
			if (!done && (!this.readyState || this.readyState == 'loaded' || this.readyState == 'complete')) {
				done = true;
				jQuery.noConflict();
				postPage();
			}
		};
		d.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(s);
	} else {
		postPage();
	}
})();

Charles,

I’m not sure about most people here but I know the feature that I would most like to see added in the near future. That would be a way to find your most recent posts from your “logged in” (top right of the main page) menu rather than having to use search or scrolling back through old threads.

Just my two cents
thanks
ausador

If you click your name in the byline of any Page, it takes you to an index of all your Pages with the most recent ones at the top.

That was my read too, so I will point out that if you click the box next to a user’s name, you can then click on the “Recent Comments” button that will show all the comments by that user during the recent time period. Works on anyone, not just yourself. :)

The neighbors started doing something obnoxiously loud in their backyard at 11am. That and the cat started going off.

20 ausador  Sun, Oct 20, 2013 5:00:36pm

I’m talking about a members regular posts in the front page threads. I am forever having to search back and find my last post so that I can bring up my posting profile by clicking on my avatar and then selecting “show recent posts.”

Am I missing something? Is there an easy and obvious way to do this that I have missed?

I want to see if I got updings or downdings, who has replied to me, in what manner, but I can’t always remember the name of the thread I posted in much less the approx. post number. This leads to much useless scrolling until you can actually find a post that you made.

I’m just saying that I would love to see the “find recent posts” feature in the “logged in” main page menu. Or if there is already an easy way to do this I would really like to hear about it.

There are not a lot of good points about how the CA houses are all jammed together, but the lack of lawns to mow is definitely one of them.

I haven’t gotten up that late in a couple of years.

In college, I roomed one year with a couple of folks on the crew team.

Occasionally I would say good night to them as they were getting up to go out and row for practice and I was getting ready to go to bed.

It was a surprisingly harmonious year. Probably since we all had individual closet-sized bedrooms.

I actually enjoy getting out behind the snowblower. Same with mowing the lawn; I have fun with it. Although my back yard is a bit of a trial, but that’s because I’m walking sideways and the grass down there grows so much faster than the front.

My parents have an acre of lawn. Pretty much flat, just grass, only a few trees around the edges.

The story goes Dad did it once with a push mower and bought a riding lawnmower the next week.

I mowed that lawn every week during the summer from when I was 12 until I moved out at 18. And then my sister took it up. And then my other sister took it up.

Now my dad is stuck with it again.

They also have a snowblower. The last big snowstorm, it took them 3 days to plow out the street (we are not exactly on a major thoroughfare) and so Dad snowblowed from the house (on the cul-de-sac) all the way out to the main street. A neighbor brought over a nice gift card to Home Depot afterwards, since that was apparently the only reason his mother-in-law was able to make her return flight after Christmas.

I use a program called ‘Start 8’ from Stardock which hides all that bull shit from me so I never see it. All I see is the desktop and the regular task button and task menu.

If you are tired of the Win8 UI on a laptop/desktop download and install Start 8. The paid version is only $4.99

Japanese youth have quit having sex and no one really knows why

An in-depth report by The Guardian examined the social elements to the long slide, starting with the fact that young people have increasingly abandoned sexual activity and dating all together. “Millions aren’t even dating, and increasing numbers can’t be bothered with sex,” wrote Abigail Haworth. “Japan already has one of the world’s lowest birth rates. Its population of 126 million, which has been shrinking for the past decade, is projected to plunge a further one-third by 2060.”

Japan’s population fell by a bit more than two-tenths of a percent last year, to 127.515 million, Japan Times reported in April. About 30 million of that population is over 65. “The decline of 284,000 in the total population, which also included foreign nationals, was the largest of its kind since officials began compiling comparable data in 1950,” Japan Times said.

On the bright side, the e-mail to the staff list for the class has affirmed that yes, I can do the short version of proving that because this violates Cantor’s theorem it can’t exist and then submit the checkpoint.

Just common sense. Don’t exceed recommended doses. Drink a glass of water along with it. Don’t mix with booze as I’m sure you won’t. I would recommend taking a break from time to time. I went cold turkey on all of it at the same time last month.

Bribery scandal engulfs U.S. Navy; contractor traded inside data for hookers and Lady Gaga tickets

Man, I’ve been contracting for 11 years now and I never get the hookers or concert tickets.

All I ever got (through friendship) was a few private airplane trips into the bush to do some camping and wildlife sightseeing (I don’t hunt) and some Christmas cards, obviously it seems I could have held out for more.

(Seriously though, you would meet on base to discuss the project and if you brought up certain obvious problems in design or code deficiencies you’d be told to shelve it for later. Then once the project had been approved and construction was 15-20% done, that’s when all the necessary design changes and required “code changes” magically appeared. Trust me, it isn’t just the “contractors screwing the government” the GAO and base officials played a willing part every step of the way too. How else can they end up with a 18 million dollar airmans dining hall when they only had approval for a 7 million dollar budget?)

No, it’s social conservatism without the command to be “be fruitful and multiply” found in socon circles within the US. The family-hostile work culture in Japan hurts as well and the job losses after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami have been a further blow. Yes, America. There is a Texan who is worse than Ted Cruz

The federal government shutdown has shaken many Americans trust in their government. Here in Corpus Christi many people are criticizing Republican Congressman Blake Farenthold.

The most recent Gallup poll shows 81 percent of Americans are dissatisfied with the government. We talked with Representative Farenthold about what the shutdown did to the nation and the fact that some residents here say they wouldn’t vote for him again.

Farenthold argued that the dissatisfaction with the government likely comes more from recent scandals like Benghazi or the NSA scandal than the government shutdown.

[…]

We asked him about the people who say he’s lost their vote; people like retired veterans who were on the verge of losing their disability checks next month.

He said the stalemate in Washington was necessary to achieve party goals.

“I feel like my mandate when I was elected was to go reduce the size of government, lower taxes, and increase freedom, and freedom isn’t free, and sometimes you have to make a small sacrifice to move forward with what you’re after,” Congressman Farenthold said.

Japan has developed some truly awful habits for long term survival. In fact, many of the the world’s great powers have. Russia’s…well, Russia, China has gotten trapped in one doozy of a demographic trap, and France, Germany, and the UK have truly toxic attitudes towards minority groups.

The US meanwhile is still dealing with an incredible deal of racism, along with a very significant portion of the population who are willing to destroy the nation before it changes. Which is truly bizarre, because the US isn’t even a state built around a nation. It has changed and morphed many times before.

India, also has the truly toxic racism issue going on as well. In many ways they have the same issues we do. However, they are a tick farther down the line, as they have honest-to-stars fascism there in the form of the BJP and the RSS.

And Pakistan is a failed state waiting for the end. Nothing can realistically save Pakistan now. Too many issues, running the gamut of just about everything.

104 dog philosopher  Sun, Oct 20, 2013 6:18:18pm

jonah goldberg

When modern liberals try to explain away the Klan membership of prominent Democrats — most frequently West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd — they cough up a few cliches about how good liberals “evolved” from their southern racial “conservatism.”

the flaw in this “proof” is, obviously, the assumption that democrat always == liberal - therefore, when there were democrats who were conservatives and racists, they were also liberals

then there is the lack of co-ordination between talking points. for example, joe mccarthy is sometimes really really bad, something “conservatives” should object to being associated with

The American right is constantly required to own the darkest chapters in the country’s history: the accommodation of segregationists, McCarthyite excesses

but also good - just a little “excessive” yanno

Despite his flaws and unforgivable excesses, (Joseph McCarthy) accurately called attention to the fact that much of the liberal establishment had been infested with communists and communist sympathizers. For that crime he, too, was dubbed a fascist

similarly, “leftists”, are sometimes in favor of utter uniformity

It takes responsibility for all aspects of life, including our health and well-being, and seeks to impose uniformity of thought and action, whether by force or through regulation and social pressure. Everything, including the economy and religion, must be aligned with its objectives. Any rival identity is part of the “problem” and therefore defined as the enemy. I will argue that contemporary American liberalism embodies all of these aspects of fascism

and at other times in favor of the evil “diversity”

(Liberal) logic seems to be that multiculturalism, the Peace Corps, and such are good things — things that liberals approve of — and good things can’t be fascist by simple virtue of the fact that liberals approve of them

then there are some good old bald faced lies:

For example, one will virtually never hear that the Palmer Raids… were thoroughly progressive phenomena

um because of course they weren’t. and

Before the war, fascism was widely viewed as a progressive social movement with many liberal and left-wing adherents in Europe and the United States

there is much tarnishing of laudable goals by associating them with hitler

The Nazis were among the first to make fighting air pollution, creating nature preserves, and pushing for sustainable forestry central plants in their platform

cough*theodore roosevelt anybody?*cough

and, finally, and assortment of that favorite big lie technique we see everyday from wingnuts, some good old “liberals believe” strawmen

Many progressives seem to think we can transform America into a vast college campus where food, shelter, and recreation are all provided for us and the only crime is to be mean to somebody else, particularly a minority.

They passionately believe the government can love you, that the state can be your God or your church or your tribe or your parent or your village or all of these things at once. Conservatives occasionally make this mistake, libertarians never do, liberals almost always do

i mean, it just fucking goes on and on

but the biggest problem goldberg faces in his sprawling tome is this: he is clearly working overtime to stitch together his frankenstein monster of a case

after all, if “liberalism” really was was the same as “fascism”, it would have been obvious to everybody decades ago, and we wouldn’t need a 300 page brief to make the case

Meanwhile in Greece this case is making headlines:

The charity taking care of a blonde, blue-eyed girl taken by police from a Roma community in Greece has received 8,000 calls from around the world since it issued a call for help in finding her parents.

“At least eight calls have some information that can be used by the police for further investigation,” Smile of the Child spokesman Panagiotis Pardalis said Sunday. “Four of these calls are from the United States.”

The group is working with Greek authorities, Interpol and Europol to solve the mystery of Maria, the name by which the couple posing as her parents called the 4-year-old.

“This Roma family had 14 children in total, and they were registered with fake birth certificates, so now the police are trying to see whether these children also belong to this family or if there is something else behind this,” Pardalis said.

The girl was immediately taken from the couple and entrusted to the care of the Smile of the Child, which will keep her in one of its group homes until her family is found.

“The girl is at peace,” Pardalis said. “She is doing much better.”
.

I hope things turn out well for the little girl, because CNN rightly points out this isn’t likely to end well for the Roma:

The girl’s discovery will probably prompt speculation that she may have been abducted or trafficked, which, if proved, could serve to fuel prejudice against the Roma community within Greece and elsewhere.

Most likely any investigation will suffer from the fact that the Roma in Larissa will probably leave town to avoid the likely arrival of a Golden Dawn led lynch mob.

Zeidan names two Congressmen “behind his abduction”

Money quote:

In a statement read out at a press conference this afternoon, before a calm and apparently confident Zeidan sat down to take questions, he accused Congressmen Mustafa Treiki and Mohamed Al-Kilani, both independents for Zawia but who have strong links with the Justice and Construction party, of being responsible for his 10 October seizure from the Corinthia hotel.

The Justice and Construction Party is the Libyan Hydra-Head of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Also, fuck no, I am not missing Christmas Eve with my family just so we are exactly even, given that it is my family’s year for Christmas itself and the majority of the celebration is on Christmas Eve.

So now we may get to fly to BWI from Raleigh and then take Amtrak up to NJ. Because flying to Newark involves leaving what is probably too early for his parents, and costs about the same in the end.

Reporting on the proposed directive, Newsweek magazine illustrated its story with a bottle of ketchup captioned “now a vegetable”.[13] The proposed directive was criticized by nutritionists and Democratic politicians who staged photo ops where they dined on nutrition-poor meals that conformed to the new lax standards. Compounding this outrage and even though the purchase was privately financed, the same day that the USDA announced the cost-cutting proposal for school lunches, the White House purchased $209,508 worth of new china and place settings with the presidential seal embossed in gold.[14][15]

During her testimony before the Subcommittee on Elementary, Secondary, and Vocational Education on September 17, 1981, Food Research and Action Center Director Nancy Amidei described a “mini meal” that she stated would meet the proposed FNS standards made up of a 1.5-ounce hamburger, half of a roll, nine grapes, six ounces of milk, and six French fries. She described a second meal that included “a lot of relish and ketchup on a tiny hamburger” as also meeting the full quantity of both meat and vegetables as established by the new regulations.[12] The Food Research and Action Center, among other nutritional advocacy groups, were part of an opposition campaign that, according to proponents of the new FNS regulations, lacked faith in local school lunch administrators to plan healthy school lunches that adhered to the new standards.[16]

Multiple articles in the press voiced conflicting statements on the ketchup controversy. A September 1981 Reuters piece stated “ketchup, which has a high sugar content, was defined under new Government rules as a vegetable”,[17] while a December New York Times piece from that same year noted that “ketchup, of course was never mentioned in the proposals, which were designed to give local school officials more flexibility in planning their meals.”[16] Administrator Hoagland elaborated on the media field day that resulted from the ketchup controversy, stating “it’s an insult to me and to school lunchroom officials to say that we would even consider forcing kids to eat ketchup as a vegetable.”[18]

Despite the fact that ketchup was not explicitly referenced as a vegetable substitute in the regulations,[3] the condiment became an easy visual for skeptics to cite when criticizing the Reagan Administration and the proposed regulations. Reporter Benjamin Weinraub called the issue “the Emperor’s new condiments”,[6] and reporter Russell Baker gave President Reagan the tongue-and-cheek “Sore President of the Year Award” writing “it was given to President Reagan on the basis of reports that in spite of the ever-pleasant smile, he is secretly sore on his old botany teacher for telling him that ketchup is a vegetable.”[19]

While ketchup was not mentioned in the original regulations, pickle relish was used as an example of an item that could count as a vegetable.

re: #119 Vicious Babushka

How is the ACA a “failure” if it hasn’t even gone into effect?

The website is *not* ACA.

Also too, how much of the shutdown affected the website rollout? (Web support technicians being “non essential”)

476K completed applications in the first 20 days. Open enrollment lasts for 181 days total this year. So, as of right now the ACA is on track to enroll 4.3 million people.

CBO estimated 7 million.

BUT, this assumes that the bulk of enrollments will be occurring at the beginning instead of the middle or end, a big assumption.

If I had to guess, health insurance is going to be the hot big Holiday season gift this year that better off parents and grandparents give to their uncovered adult children and grandchildren. We’ll probably see a flattening of completed applications and then a sharp increase again towards the end of the year and at the start of 2014, with another lull in February and pickup as the open enrollment period nears it’s expiration date at the end of March.

So 7 million is still absolutely plausible.

In any event the bulk of the website problems were caused by needless traffic, people looking who already have employer provided insurance, old people already on Medicare, etc. And all of this ignores the fact that the federal exchanges are serving a bunch of states who’s governments deliberately refused to cooperate with the law as much as possible. The citizens of those states are lucky that they’re being served at all.

Why? A military coup is a military coup. It makes us look extremely hypocritical when we only pretend to give a shit about democracy. The MB may have made their bed, but so did the Egyptian army.

re: #156 goddamnedfrank

Ah, but here is the rub.

Yes, the MB got elected, but they clearly were not being democratic. They were in the process of consolidating power, quashing dissent, and persecuting minorities.

Yes, the military did a coup, but look at what the MB was doing before hand, such as persecution of the Copts. Al-Azhar University and the Coptic Church approved of the military action for heaven’s sake.

At some point, very tough decisions must be made in these circumstances. Allow for short-term democracy, followed by a fascist state, or go for a relatively short-term military coup in order to save the nation?

And I will compare what the MB was doing to how the Nazi Party dismantled the Weimar Republic. They were going down the same road. Difference here is, the Egyptian Military ended it before horrific damage could be done.

160 goddamnedfrank  Sun, Oct 20, 2013 7:14:58pm

Anther huge obstacle in meeting the original CBO projections for ACA enrollment is the direct result of the Supreme Court decision that let so many red states refuse to expand their Medicaid programs. This can only hurt the citizens of those states, the Medicaid expansion was free money with no lock in. They refused it out of pure spite, and as a result their hospital ER are going to be filling up with the same patients who can’t afford to pay their bills.

All those unpaid healthcare costs are going to drive up the cost of healthcare and thus health insurance in those states. It’s worth remembering at this point that these are the same states with the highest rates of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Yeah, that sucks, but that’s why functioning democracies have courts and elections. All the military did was show that the democracy the Egyptians had built was a sham. Rewarding that kind of behavior with continued aid sets up the worst kind of moral hazard.

Fox News Guest Says Maryville Teen Didn’t Deserve to Be Raped, BUT…

Grab a pillow to punch and a bottle of wine to down before you listen to Fox News’ “expert guest”, Criminal defense attorney Joseph DiBenedetto make a case for why the alleged Maryville rape victim — Daisy Coleman, the 14-year-old girl who was raped by an older high school student in 2012 — was asking to be assaulted. He delivers such gems as “nobody forced her to drink”, “the easy way out here is ‘mom, someone took advantage of me’”, “what did she expect to happen at 1am in the morning after sneaking out? I’m not saying… that she deserved to be raped, but knowing the facts…”

Taylor filed the lawsuit at the beginning of September saying that after that accident he injured his back and had to “endure great pain and suffering, disability, impairment, loss of joy of life.” Taylor also says in the lawsuit that the accident was “debilitating.”

Richmond Times refuses to endorse Cooch

When Virginians consider the choice between hard-right conservative Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and former Clinton staffer Terry McAuliffe, the Richmond Times-Dispatch has decided to go fishing instead. The headline says it all.

“Our choice for governor in 2013: none of the above.”

For context, Virginia’s largest newspaper leans conservative. The Times-Dispatch endorsed George W. Bush, John McCain and Mitt Romney. Its editorial board backed the 2003 invasion of Iraq and a proposal for a flat income tax.

But the paper seems to have drawn a line with Cuccinelli. “The major-party candidates have earned the citizenry’s derision,” the editorial board wrote. “This does not gladden us. Circumstance has brought us to this pass. This marks, we believe, the first time in modern Virginia that The Times-Dispatch has not endorsed a gubernatorial nominee.”

FDR’s opposition was about 1/4 of the house and 30% of the senate; they complained bitterly and flailed in impotence, but had no power to stop him.

LBJ had a lot of arm-twisting leverage available to him; plus a country traumatized by an assassination. The polarization then was northerners/westerners (of both parties) v. southerners (of both parties), and southerners were a less-than-filibusterable minority.

Reagan’s opposition was headed by Tip O’Neill; both of them valued smooth governmental operation over getting their own way.

Exactly, we as a country have gotten used to the idea of presidents being able to rely either upon their party having a commanding position in the legislature or having opposition leaders who were more interested in deal-making and getting stuff done than in opposing everything the president proposes because it sells well to the rubes back home who live in daily fear that “the country they know” is on the verge of disappearing.

Yes! I have had chronic neck pain for years, and it turns out that it is really easy to induce a stomach ulcer simply by taking NSAIDs regularly. Yes, even if you never take more than the package says.

Eat real food, first, before taking an NSAID. If you start to get stomach aches, don’t ignore it.

I now take something called Mobic, which is still an NSAID, but is much easier on my stomach (which of course is now extra sensitive - since I have had an ulcer!) You only take one a day of these, and I try to only take one every other day and use muscle relaxants if necessary to make up the difference.

Are the Swiss having second thoughts about capitalism?

The extraordinary series of political initiatives on pay rates which are being put to Swiss voters is the sign of a rank-and-file “rebellion” against fat-cat salaries for top managers. But the free market is still generally accepted, say two academics in the field.
The shock-waves after the carrying of the popular initiative “against rip-off salaries” in March 2013 have not yet abated, but on November 24 there is to be a nationwide vote on another proposal to put the brakes on the pay of top managers. This is the initiative “1:12 – for fair pay”, which proposes that the highest wage paid by any company be no more than twelve times the lowest wage it pays. Next year, a further initiative could set a minimum legal wage for Switzerland.

Demands for more equitable pay rates have traditionally come from the left, but in the last few years they seem to have won favour with a broad spectrum of voters.

“Citizens have rebelled against a system of pay imported from the English-speaking world in the last twenty years in the wake of globalisation”, Rafael Lalive, who teaches economics at the University of Lausanne, told swissinfo.ch. This system is linked to “development of financial products, such as ‘call options’, which have made it possible for top managers to receive fabulous salaries”, he explains.

Oklahoma City teen finds 3.85-carat diamond at Arkansas state park

Most teenagers who go to a state park with their parents for vacation are lucky to come home with a trophy fish. Tana Clymer brought home a 3.85-carat diamond that is likely worth thousands of dollars.

The God’s Gem diamond, found Saturday at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas by 14-year-old Tana Clymer, of Oklahoma City, sits next to a U.S. quarter. The 3.8-carat canary diamond is gem quality and could be worth thousands of dollars. Photo provided by Crater of Diamonds State Park
Tana, 14, of Oklahoma City, found the diamond Saturday afternoon at the Crater of Diamonds state park in Murfreesboro, Ark. She named the diamond “God’s Jewel.”

[…]

“God’s gem”, and “God’s Jewel” - yes, this is most certainly, definitely, America.

Diamonds have long been found in the area, as the remnants of the old mountains there have worn away and exposed very ancient lamporites or kimberlites:

Do you suppose these practices, a thorn in the side for many and brewing for years, could have something to do with it as well?

Ex-UBS banker wanted in U.S. tax probe arrested in Italy

Switzerland is not the utopia many people think it is.

“According to Credit Suisse, only about 37% of residents own their own homes, one of the lowest rates of home ownership in Europe. Housing and food price levels were 171% and 145% of the EU-25 index in 2007, compared to 113% and 104% in Germany.[87]”

“There are both public and private schools, including many private international schools. The minimum age for primary school is about six years in all cantons, but most cantons provide a free “children’s school” starting at four or five years old.[96] Primary school continues until grade four, five or six, depending on the school. Traditionally, the first foreign language in school was always one of the other national languages, although recently (2000) English was introduced first in a few cantons.[96]

“At the end of primary school (or at the beginning of secondary school), pupils are separated according to their capacities in several (often three) sections. The fastest learners are taught advanced classes to be prepared for further studies and the matura,[96] while students who assimilate a little bit more slowly receive an education more adapted to their needs.”

Health care coverage is similar to ACA—required coverage from a private insurer.

Foreigners make up approx 22% of the population, and xenophobia is showing up in political campaigns.

Source: Nizkor Project statistics derived from Yad Vashem and Fleming, Hitler and the Final Solution.

Out of the more than 6 million killed, only 130,000 were Germans. Another 65,000 were Austrians.

In other words, that’s 130,000 out of 6 million or about 2% of the total of the genocide committed by the Nazis.

Another 90-150,000 Roma (gypsies) were killed across Europe by the Nazis.

And as you (and most everyone else on LGF) knows, the death camps, which include Auschwitz-Birkenau, Chelmo, Sobibor, Treblinka, etc., weren’t on German soil, but inside Poland - which was where the majority of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust lived.

Prudence is an ignorant asshat who has no problem using Holocaust imagery to further a political agenda that has absolutely nothing to do with what she claims. Loon doesn’t cover it. She’s purposefully using and expropriating Nazi imagery to claim that the Obama Administration is doing the same - following that same path, even though there’s no correlation or similarities at all.

235 wheat-dogghazi  Mon, Oct 21, 2013 6:11:44am

re: #233 Vicious Babushka

Those 6 million had no choice but to go to the concentration camps. They didn’t “blindly follow” the Nazis; they were led with pointed guns.

236 lawhawk  Mon, Oct 21, 2013 6:15:25am

re: #235 wheat-dogghazi

They were rounded up at gunpoint, stripped of all possessions, thrown into ghettos, or sent directly to concentration camps. Many were then sent to the extermination camps, where most of those who arrived alive were then directly sent to the gas chambers.

People cannot stand by quietly or idly while people like Prudence use Nazi imagery - a real horror - to claim that some perceived slight is on the same level.

It’s not the same sport. It’s not the same field. It’s not even in the same universe of wrongness. Claiming issues with the ACA is a political one - not one that involved the genocide. But that’s why Prudence and others who tweet this garbage do so. They want people to equate the two.

If there hadn’t been a Holocaust, these people would invent it to show just how bad the ACA is (which it isn’t, but that’s besides the point).

237 wheat-dogghazi  Mon, Oct 21, 2013 6:17:45am

re: #236 lawhawk

They are conflating the victims of the Holocaust with the general population of Germany, few of whom probably realized what was going on in those camps. It goes beyond stupid.

And on real health care news…

Expect the right wing to make hay of the headline that noone has been enrolled in NY, even though 130,000 applications completed.

What isn’t getting as many headlines - the NYS DoH is holding off on sending the applications to insurers to verify the information.

In New York, one of only 16 states that has its own exchange, not one person had succeeded in using the site to enroll in a plan as of Friday.

Donna Frescatore, director of the New York State of Health marketplace, said Friday that 134,000 people had registered and shopped on the state’s online health care site since its Oct. 1 launch, and thousands signed up to enroll in a plan.

But the state has repeatedly delayed electronically transmitting those users’ data to insurers offering health plans.

The department, which held off in order to verify the accuracy of the information users submitted, said it would transfer the first batch of enrollees’ data — which includes thousands of transactions — as early as Friday night.

So did the Polish and French armies, and they were overrun within days and weeks.

The French army was actually armed with better armor than the Nazi invaders, but still were forced to surrender after the Nazis bypassed the Maginot line and invaded via the Low Countries.

Poland gave little resistance.

Heck, the Russians were pushed back to near Moscow, were besieged at Stalingrad and Leningrad (St. Petersburg). Despite hundreds of army divisions and thousands of planes and tanks, and the Nazis still managed to push deep into Russia and held territory for several years before being rolled back by the end of the war.

Just so other Lizards know, I’ll be covering the Czech elections coming up here on October 25-26. Voting lasts two days, with the polls closing at 1400 local time on Saturday the 26th.

This election could well see a shift to the left, politically; the ČSSD (Social Democratic Party) is expected to win a good-sized share of the vote. The conservative party here, ODS, is in disarray and in bad shape. The other center-right party, TOP09, seems to be pulling votes away from ODS.

The wildcard this election is the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia, the KSČM; they’re running second only behind the Social Democrats. They are an unreconstructed communist party, and the latest polls I’ve seen show they may well end up with 20% of the vote.

Traditionally, the parties here have long refused to cooperate with the Communists - however, the Social Democrats have indicated they may seek out KSČM support for a minority government. President Zeman here has endorsed this idea as well.

So, things could get interesting. We shall see.

Hmm, it’s almost as if you should live in a non-New Mexico blue state if you want to live with less risk of gun violence. As for the red states? Well, there are the empty plains states. And Utah.

Hey VB, looks like B&H is moving a bunch of its warehousing operations to Rockland County from Brooklyn’s famed Navy Yard. Bigger space, close to the Hasidic community in Chestnut Ridge.

B&H is moving in part because they couldn’t expand further in the Yard and because Steiner Studios is going to be expanding into the space when their lease expires.

I bet Greenwald publishes a hardhitting exposé any minute now.

I’m also sure the UN will be on it ASAP.

WTFITS

Attempts to identify actual persons tyrannized by court’s decision were unsuccessful.

He’s got a point. For example, St. Louis, Memphis, Little Rock, Atlanta, and Birmingham are among the most violence-plagued cities in the country. Of course, you’ll never hear about that on FOX News because a) they’re in Red States, and we need to keep pretending that life is better for all in those locales, and b) all wingnut talking points about urban dysfunction must center on Detroit and Chicago.

Geez. ‘courts impose sodomy-based marriage’? Tell me how many people found themselves married to someone of the same gender against their will.

Of course he changes the subject and doesn’t acknowledge that the wingnuts are using a fake “Gun Crime statistics” map.

I ask them how to explain the “high gun crime” in upper Minnesota. Canadian drug gangs?

I really wish those gun guys could raise the bar on the complex argument. Edit-And quit lying ffs.

The nation should adopt about* what California has done.
I think the gun guys need to look at the stats like Chicago or DC or NY as the murder capitol as a crime/gang crime issue, not a gun issue.

Nuance-California gun laws help overall but certainly complicate or even obstruct defensive rights in high crime areas/circumstances.

Further, rural rules really need to be different than thick urban area rules.

This weekend, I was looking in on the older boy’s FB fights with Conservatives. I was impressed! Well put-together arguments, well written, with sources.

But as Newt says in ‘Aliens’ - “It won’t make any difference.” These people are really stuck in the bubble. I was surprised to see that there are really people out there who buy into the ‘FEMA Camps’ bullshit.

And of course, the requisite complaining about TYRANNY!!! on an open forum with no worry about being censored or punished for criticizing government. Sheesh.

315 darthstar  Mon, Oct 21, 2013 8:32:17am

This kind of shit concerns me. Could be new volcanic fissure leaking high levels of sulfur where the Oar fish live, or it could be the result of some old deep water chemical dumping that has finally cracked open and is poisoning fish.

re: #234 lawhawk

And if I remember my WWII history correctly, those 6 million(-ish) Jews that got exterminated during the Holocaust actually are less than half of the total of the “Untermensch” the Naz’s disposed of by various means.

I’ve seen a strong tendency from some rightwing sources to gloss over that additional 6 to 7 million(-ish) victims that the Nazis deemed undesireable, such as sexually deviant men and women, disabled, mental patients (I could go on longer, but you get the picture).

And I’ve noted a tendency among some rightwingers to flip their lid when you raise that particular topic, they seem to be in denial that a significant portion of the victims of the Holocaust were gays and lesbians, that institutionalized people were systematically “euthanized” during the Nazis reign.

I don’t know what to make of the denial, whether it is simple stupid following of the pundits, or whether it is an effort to do a repeat. The latter is a prospect that scares me. As Justice Robert Jackson said during his opening address at the Nuremberg trials:

“The wrongs which we seek to condemn and punish have been so calculated, so malignant and so devastating, that civilization cannot tolerate their being ignored because it cannot survive their being repeated”
